Foreword This is the third annual review of the 30% Club Southern Africa (30%CSA) and records the main endeavours and achievements during the past year 2017. It is very pleasing to note what has been achieved in the past twelve months whilst the country has endured a number of challenging moments. Membership continues to grow and more importantly the quality of the conversation is improving. Less and less work is being undertaken by organisations working in silos. I noted in the foreward last year that the most energising new project for me during 2016 was the BoardWalk programme. At the end of the year we were able to conclude an agreement which added the LeaderWalk Challenge to the programme. This contest will add a new dimension to the gender topic, in both a serious and yet fun way. It is something that both the individual and the company can embrace. We reported last year that we were able to add Cape Town as a locale for many of the 30%CSA events. This year we were able to consolidate our work there with an official launch. Our relationship with Minister Susan Shabangu and her dedicated team goes from strength to strength. Hopefully she will retain her position in 2018, but with a lot more budget to work with. The same is true of our various partners. We continue to engage with non-profit sector organizations, both locally and abroad. The SA Canadian Chamber of Commerce joined as members during the year and we look forward to our collaboration with them. Globally, the 30% Club has consolidated its position as the premier campaign for gender mainstreaming in the private sector. Our congratulations go out to Helena Morrisey, the founder of the 30% Club who was been made a Dame in the Queen’s birthday honours list for promoting diversity in the financial services sector. In conclusion, it is yet again a pleasure to recognise the time and effort put in by all the members of the Steering Committee. Many go above and beyond the call of duty. Colleen Larsen F. Inst. D. It is an opportunity to introduce South African business leaders to the work and the aspirations of 30%CSA. The speakers for the event were the Minister of Women in the Presidency, Susan Shabangu and Mardia Niehaus, Senior Vice President Middle East and Africa T-Systems International. The Members’ Dinner is an integral part of the 30%CSA calendar of events and is an important form of communication between 30%CSA, its members and potential members. T-Systems South Africa have confirmed that they will be hosting the forth Members Dinner on 8th March 2018.

The BoardWalk and LeadersWalk Started in September 2015, The BoardWalk / LeadersWalk an essential programme for women aspiring to make it to the executive committees and boards of the private sector in South Africa. The first part of the programme involves business breakfasts. The second part a business challenge. These two parts are augmented by high level networking opportunities linked to the various other activities of the 30%CSA. The breakfasts, which are held at least five times a year in each region in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban, allows aspiring executives and board members to interact with existing, experienced executives and board members in a relaxed environment. Attendees look to the guest speakers and table hosts (the experienced directors) to impart practical advice to those who are wishing to make the step up. Since November 2016 357 individuals have attended 6 events in Johannesburg and in Cape Town 151 individuals have attended at the 4 events held. Two BoardWalks have been held in Durban so far, the same number for the LeadersWalks

LeadersWalk Challenge Adding onto the BoardWalk / LeadersWalk programme the 30%CSA finalised the concept of the LeadersWalk Challenge. This is being run in conjunction with AVG Inc headed up by Enrico Baldassari, current CEO of Revlon / Elizabeth Arden. AVG has developed Jumpshift WorthTM, a training methodology, process and tool (including presentations and case histories), designed to enable the participant to develop integrated business acumen and skills., covering in a compact, but expandable, flexible and practical way all the aspects on how value generation can be achieved in a business organisation. Business Engage has taken this concept and developed it into a business challenge.

Appointments It was very satisfying when Mamokete Ramathe, a regular Board Walk participant was appointed to the Bell Equipment board. Even more so as the appointment was as a direct result of Mamokete’s involvement in the BoardWalk.

Lynn Brewer visit to SA In line with the 30%CSA policy of attracting top quality international speakers on 10th August 2017 30%CSA hosted Lynn Brewer. Lynn was exposed to the goings on at Enron which brought down Arthur Anderson in the USA. Our thanks go to long time 30%CSA supporter Michael Judin for arranging Lynn. 110 members and guest were enthralled with Lynn’s talk. For nearly three years, Lynn Brewer was in a position at Enron to witness numerous instances of illegal and corrupt dealings, including bank fraud, espionage, power price manipulation, and the gross overstatements to the press, public, and financial world. In 2006, as one of the last to meet with former CEO Ken Lay— after his conviction and just two weeks before his untimely death—Brewer and Lay discussed her pursuit of an answer to the question that haunts most investors—why didn’t the CEO see the company’s demise coming? Recognizing like most CEOs, often insulated from critical warning signs, Lynn believed Enron was the beginning of a changing landscape in our capital markets, writing in her 2002 autobiography: Confessions of an Enron Executive: A Whistleblower’s Story: “Look to Enron to foretell the future.” Lynn has tirelessly spent the past 13 years in pursuit of the answers

Gender Mainstreaming E-Zine Launched in December 2015, the Gender E Zine is an e-magazine profiling 30%CSA and non-30%CSA members in their gender activities and initiatives. Many people argue that nothing is been done in corporate South Africa. This is not true, however it is submitted that organisations are not, for various reasons, getting the story out to their stakeholders and the public at large. The Gender E Zine provides a platform to correct this. The E Zine is sent out to all members, contributors and interested parties. Recipients are encouraged to distribute the E Zine, which is free of charge, widely to their employees, clients and other stakeholders. The Gender E Zine was distributed in January, April, August and November.

22

Research The 30% CSA is currently undertaking research on both the gender reporting by JSE listed companies and the prevalence of female appointees to board position in terms of the King Codes non-executive director rotation. For the JSE listing requirements 2016 is being used as a benchmark. All JSE listed companies which publish their reports on or after 1st January 2017 are required to report on their policy. The30%CSA further partnered with Bain and Company for the Gender (Dis)Parity in South Africa research project which was published in 2017. It is expected that this is research which will be updated and expanded on over many years.

23

The Year Ahead 2017 was a good year for growth of the 30%CSA, both in terms of activities and membership. In 2018 we will be looking to consolidate the gains made. Cape Town and Durban will attract special attention to ensure that the momentum built up in those areas in maintained. In roads into East Africa will be made, although this will be approached with caution ensuring that a set up in that region would be sustainable and self-funding. The research will be continued with more subjective information being sourced. The LeadersWalk Challenge will ensure that the BoardWalk / LeadersWalk programme provides the private sector with a unique leadership platform which is essential in this country at the present time. We look forward to assisting organization in their search for outstanding female talent. Following on from Lynn Brewer, early in 2018 we are hosting Francine Katsoudas Senior Vice President and Chief People Officer Cisco San Francisco and Beatrix Dart, Executive Director: Initiative for Women in Business, Rotman School of Management and Chairman of the Steering Committee for 30% Club Canada. 2018 will see the setting up of a regional Steercom in Cape Town in order to attend to local issues and events. We will of course look to continue to focus on our working relationship and partnership with all our stakeholders.
