3

FOREWORD This is the fourth annual review of the 30% Club Southern Africa (30%CSA) and records the main endeavours and achievements for the past year 2018. When I look at how far we have come in four short years it makes me realise that, notwithstanding our many challenges both individually and collectively, we should be very grateful for what we have achieved, and what we are able to achieve in the future. Yes, we have corruption to deal with, poverty and education desperately have to be addressed; and land and other property concerns are often at the forefront of our thinking. We know that the matter of gender in the workplace will be debated for a long time to come. We also know that when we see the steps that we are taking, not working in silos, we are moving forward. Seeing what other 30% Club chapters are experiencing and getting themselves involved in, I am proud to say that the 30% Club Southern Africa ranks very highly and all the members can be very proud of their efforts. I know I am. We have always said that we want to be known as an organisation that produces results. Having events is all well and good but if you are not changing the landscape, what are you really doing and why are you doing? Quality over quantity has a lot going for it. 4

When we started the BoardWalk and LeadersWalk programmes it was with the stated aim that we would assist in placing new talent in the boardroom. In Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban since we started the Boardwalk we have had a total of 24 events and LeadersWalk 10. Altogether, since the inception of the BoardWalk / LeadersWalk up until 31st December 2018 1,098 people have attended the BoardWalks and 752 the LeadersWalks. This excludes LeadersWalks that have been company or organization specific. It also excludes Nairobi which is covered below. Due to the success of 30%CSA in 2018 Business Engage launched the 30% Club in East Africa. We had to fight hard for the campaign management to see the value in launching in the region. It also took us a while to ensure that we were ready to launch. We started off at the end of 2018 with a LeadersWalk and we look forward to making a success in that region. We are fortunate that many of our members in South Africa are also well represented in East Africa. I am not going to dwell on our existing activities, they are here for you to read. I do however want to briefly mention two new initiatives for 2018. Firstly, the JSE Listed Companies Research which has been occasioned by new listing requirements effective January 2017. The 30% Club has, without publishing, been tracking the opportunities at board level afforded to women by the rotation of non-executive directors as recommended by the King Codes. The new listing requirements however provided a clear opportunity for a campaign such as the 30% Club to track, over a sustained period of time, what the JSE listed companies are doing in terms of gender at board level. Secondly, our on-line mentoring platform which will be launched early 2019. Whilst we have always recognized the need for mentoring in all formats we have stayed away from it until such time as we could manage the process to the standards that we strive to uphold. I should note in this regard that the platform when it is launched is not the total experience that we are looking for. We estimate it will take us about two years to get to that position. Finally, any organiation is only as good as the people who drive it. Many individuals have made great efforts to support the 30% Club in so many ways during the year and as always such efforts are greatly appreciated. Colleen Larsen F. Inst. D. President 30% Club Southern Africa

Members’ Dinner The fourth Members’ Dinner was held on 8th March 2018. 160 invitees enjoyed good food, wine and great company. The Members Dinner is an opportunity to introduce South African business leaders to the work of 30%CSA. The guest speaker was well known scenario strategist Chantell Ilbury, co-author with Clem Sunter of Mind of the Fox. In her talk Chantell encouraged the audience to envisage what will South Africa look like in 2025, and what it should look like? Given the changing world of work set in the context of a country with currently low economic growth, high levels of unemployment, and an education system facing obsolescence, will South Africa’s competitiveness in a global world be sustainable in 2025? What are the essential conversations we need to have as businesses? And, more critically, is South Africa producing the skills and people who can think the future, who can drive it.

Cape Town and Kwa-Zulu Natal Regions The Cape Town region which was launched in November 2017. Since then a number of BoardWalk / LeadersWalk events have taken place and the region is growing stronger. The KZN region likewise, has hosted a number of BoardWalk / LeadersWalk events and whilst having started after Cape Town, and has yet to have an “official” launch, has grown in a very pleasing manner.

Research As reported in the previous yearly review, in 2017 the 30% CSA undertook research on both the gender reporting by JSE listed companies and the prevalence of female appointees to board position in terms of the King Codes non-executive director rotation. This research was never published. During 2018 we focused on the research into the JSE companies and specifically the listing requirements in terms of gender which states; “the board of directors or the nomination committee, as the case may be, must have a policy on the promotion of gender diversity at board level. The issuer must confirm this by reporting to shareholders in its annual report on how the board of directors or the nomination committee, as the case may be, have considered and applied the policy of gender diversity in the nomination and appointment of directors. If applicable, the board of directors or the nomination committee must further report progress in respect thereof on agreed voluntary targets; The key finding of the research, which covered the period 1 January to 31 December 2017, was that this requirement is having a positive impact on women’s opportunities in the boardroom and that, based on the information currently available, opportunity for 84 women to be appointed to 62 boards exists in the near future. The full report is available on the Business Engage website. WDB Investment Holdings, the Institute of Directors Southern Africa and Korn Ferry partnered with 30%CSA in this research.

The Connected Workplace The Connected Workplace was held on 21 June at Citi Group, Sandton. There were 105 attendees who were treated to presentations from Absa CIB, Coface and Liberty Holdings. 20

Mentoring Platform Towards the end of the year Business Engage entered into an agreement with a UK based company for the development of an on-line mentoring platform for 30% Club and Business Engage members. Development of the platform started towards the end of 2018 and will be launched in the first quarter of 2019.

Launch of the 30% Club East Africa On 24 October Business Engage launched the 30% Club East Africa in Nairobi. The launch event was a LeadersWalk held at the Villa Rosa Kempinski Hotel and sponsored by Standard Chartered Bank. The Speaker was 30%CSA member Sneha Shah, MD Thomson Reuters (now renamed Refinotiv). 80 people attended the event.

General During 2018 30%CSA became a “preferred partner of Maserati South Africa.

21

The Year Ahead 2019 will be a watershed year for 30% CSA / CEA. In South Africa we are preparing for accelerated and sustainable growth. More and more blue-chip companies are seeing the benefit of joining the campaign. The word is getting out and we now have more organisations phoning up out of the blue requesting more information. As more JSE listed companies take cognisance of the gender listing requirements we are looking forward to interacting with those companies that are not already members. For the first time, attendance at the Gender Mainstreaming Awards will top 1,000 and we have moved from Vodadom to the Blue Wing TicketPro Dome to the main arena at the TicketPro Dome in successive years. Those of you who have been with us for a while will remember that when we started the Gender Mainstreaming Awards in 2013 attendance was 320. In 2019 we will look to strengthen the South African regions and consolidate our initial drive into East Africa. We will of course look to continue to focus on our working relationship and partnership with all our stakeholders and look forward to adding meaningfully to those partnerships.
