MEXICO DESTINATION:

SAN LUIS POTOSÍ

Cave of the Swallows

Fascinating history, stunning natural beauty, and a diverse cultural mix make the State of San Luis Potosí, in the high plains of central Mexico, one of the country’s most exciting –though somewhat undiscovered– destinations. Escape the tourist crowds and embark on a journey through this captivating region. Colonial Charm

Cathedral

With its grand plazas, stately palaces, and beautifully manicured gardens, the capital city of San Luis Potosí is one of Mexico’s most charming colonial cities. Stroll through the central historic district to admire the city’s fine baroque and neo-classical architecture. Take in a concert, play, or dance performance at the historic La Paz Theater. Or visit some of the city’s many museums such as the Federico Silva Museum of Contemporary Sculpture, which displays the magnificent works of this acclaimed Mexican sculptor.

The Days of Xantolo

If you happen to visit by late October to early November, you can’t miss the celebration of the Day of the Dead through the Route of Xantolo, a festivity that takes place in almost every town of the state, each of them with their own rituals. Among those towns, if you need to pick one place, you should probably go to Axtla de Terrazas, in the Aguacatitla and Chalco community, where the whole town takes part of the camposanto hand-over to a new watchman. Xantolo allows you to witness very closely the respect everybody pays to the dead, with families making a stop along the way to honor their ancestors and meet those that passed away with altars, beautiful cempasúchitl flowers, colorful candles and pictures, and offerings made of sweets, fruits and beverages. The key dates are November 1 -All Saints Days- and November 2 -All Souls Day-, but if you happen to stop by before or after, you still will be able to share the preparations and celebrations around every town.

Awe-Inspiring Nature

Admirers of nature shouldn’t miss a visit to the Cave of the Swallows. This skyscraper-size pit cave plunges straight down more than 1,400 feet, making it one of the largest cave shafts on the planet. Despite its name, this natural refuge is home to thousands of white-collared swifts (not swallows). Come in the early evening to watch as the birds return home, flying in spirals above the cave before breaking off in groups of about 50 to free-fall into the cave, extending their wings and pulling out of the dive only when they reach the height of their nests.

Pueblos Mágicos

One of San Luis Potosí’s top experiences is the discovery of two towns that earned a place in Mexico’s “Pueblos Mágicos” Program. First, stop by the old mining town of Real de Catorce. Accessible only via the raw and startlingly narrow Ogarrio Tunnel, which measures more than a mile in length, this ghost town is legendary for its unique atmosphere and adventure activities. Join a horseback excursion to the abandoned mines; embark on a photography safari; or hike to El Quemado, a sacred Huichol site with marvelous views of the surrounding mountains. And then, escape to an enchanted world of lush tropical gardens, dramatic waterfalls, and magnificent surrealist-inspired sculptures at Las Posas, Xilitla, an extraordinary Sculptural Garden created by Sir Edward James, an eccentric British poet and artist. Artists, writers, and photographers from around the world come here to contemplate James’ “Surrealist Xanadu.” While you’re here, take time to visit the nearby former convent of Saint Augustine. Erected in 1557, it is the oldest Hispanic construction in the state.

The Fun of a Daytrip

And there is more magic beyond the “Pueblos Mágicos”. A daytrip visit would take you to some very picturesque towns and villages across the state. Wander the narrow cobblestone streets of Armadillo de los Infante and see its historic mansions and graceful churches. Visit Santa Maria del Rio to shop for exquisite hand woven silk rebozos (shawls). Or stop by Villa de Reyes to enjoy the town’s colonial architecture, delightful thermal waters, and old haciendas.
