The Jones Family Evan Espenscheid HerdsmanLot 1 always has a special place in our sale, and Mardis Gras does not disappoint. Many times division champion this summer, she recently was named the Reserve Champion Heifer at the Wisconsin State Fair. We could go on and on about this heifer, but Ashley Judge Wagner said it best during the grand drive at our state fair, “She is so attractive and angular through her front end, awesome in the angle of her shoulder, robust in the center part of her body, genuine, powerful and stout from behind, so well-balanced in the way she is built from the side and sound structured underneath.” We couldn’t agree more but we would like to add she is red-necked, goggle-eyed and yak-haired too. Like a new pickup with all the options, this one will be fun to drive!
A full sister to lot 1 and part of one of the most consistent flushes in our history, this mating has really clicked! Mockingbird is uber correct, awesome in her balance and design, long-necked with a perfect shoulder. Fresh in her appearance, we think she has all the tools to be an awesome yearling. Out of one of the hottest bulls in the breed and a past lot 1, what’s not to like! You will have a lot of fun next summer with this one!
We have some great partners that are our cooperator herds, and most are local so we can check the calves out at an early age. Passion was one that was a head-turner and a favorite early on. She’s our kind; super long-necked and attractive in her front end while exploding into a huge rib cage. Straight in her lines, you will have a hard time finding one that is prettier. We are pretty high on these Liberty calves and you can see why when you see them in person. Patience has clicked with every bull she has been mated to with thirteen different national show division and reserve division winners produced, and we think Passion has that same potential.

Lots 4A & 4B – Every year we try to bring you some of the freshest genetics, and we were so intrigued by the Jensen and Allan bull Liberty at both KC, where he won the show, and OKC where he was named reserve. Impeccable in his structure and he sure has passed that on to his offspring. These will be some of the first Liberty’s to sell in the nation and you can get in on the ground floor of the next hot bull of the breed. Patience has done it again with these 2 full sisters to lot 3. Both are rugged, sound and solid. One horned and one polled. Take home the one you like!
Lot 5 – Old school cool is the rule with lot 5. Her sire, Justified, is a bull that has intrigued me ever since I saw some of his offspring at Lowderman’s and Grimmel’s. We bought some semen before his untimely passing and finally pulled the trigger on it and we are glad we did. What a looker! Elegant and striking from the side, this horned heifer will look really good in the horned division next year. If you are like us and are looking for some different out-cross genetics, check her out.
Lot 6 – Big Country was a bull we were dying to use after he was named Horned Champion at OKC. He has sired some pretty unique offspring in our herd. We were intrigued to mate him to Patience, who just doesn’t miss with any sire. Some older full sibs sell as lot 20A-C later in the sale as well as being a full sib to our Prodigy bull that we have been campaigning successfully and was recently named reserve champion bull at the WI State Fair as a calf. These April horneds are a little greener as they are younger and were weaned later, but they keep getting better every day! If you liked them dark, long-necked and cool looking, this one is the ticket!
Freak alert! If you are looking for one that is unique and a flat-out smoker, she is worth the drive to Darlington. You could put on a lot of miles trying to find a horned heifer this good. Jack necked, tight jawed, with an explosive massive rib cage. Combine that with a big square hip and the wheels to compete! Parma’s potential is off the charts! Marksman is hot as any bull in the breed with his calves competing and winning at the highest levels and we think this one will get you noticed!
The last couple years we have been trying to add some high-end females to diversify our donor lineup and offering. The dam of lot 8, Lady Luck or “LuLu” as she is known around the farm, has been a grand slam addition to our program. Truly impressive as a show heifer winning divisions at Louisville and OKC, her value went up exponentially after she calved when her udder turned out great, as well as raising a whale of a natural calf out of the calving ease bull Convoy. These two were a dynamic duo this summer in the cow-calf division being named Grand Champion at four state shows, Reserve Overall Female at the Wisconsin State Fair, and a Junior National Class Winner. Lucille 306 has exploded since Junior National with exceptional growth, a massive rib cage and is super functional. We think the maternal is built into this pedigree and the future cow power is awesome. Lucille is entered at the American Royal and we would love to take her and her mom as a pair if the new owner is willing.
Lot 9 – The cow power in this horned female is remarkable. Big, deep bellied, soggy and easy fleshing. Her dam is a super producing About Time daughter we own with Brooke and Glen Davis, who are all about power and performance cattle in the Angus industry. This female traces back to the power cow “Sonnet” who is a past high seller and a donor for Wallin Family Cattle in Iowa. Out of the low birth weight, highly maternal bull Fresh Prince whose semen was selling for $1,000 a unit, the genetics in this female are truly awesome. A steer that was a maternal brother to this female was second in class at the junior national and recently was named Supreme Champion at the Central Wisconsin State Fair for the Aue family. The good cowboys will be checking lot 9 out.
BD Song 301
Lot 10 – Lot 10 is out of another new donor for us who is turning into a whale of a cow. Callen, the dam, looks like she could still hit the showring today and is truly a standout in the pasture. Callen is a daughter of the Hawk donor Mirage, who is the dam of two Junior National Champions. Callen herself had a successful show career being named Reserve Grand Champion at the Louisville Jr Show as well as winning Reserve Division Champion at OKC. We expect some big things from Callen in the future including her ET Calves selling as lot 11&12. Lot 10 is her natural calf, and has really been strutting her stuff around the pasture. Out of Pat Wall’s great calving ease bull Convoy, this female is a unique breeding piece with her moderate BW EPD. Good looking and good numbers.

Lots 11 & 12 –These two are Rockstars! Truly the type of cattle we love to breed and show. Extended necks, beautiful fronts, amazing width and top shape, level and square hipped, with tremendous rib shape. Two of the younger heifers in the sale but truly elite. Their sire, High Roller has been as hot of a showring sire as any bull of the breed, and the udders on his first daughters have been an added bonus. The dam, Callen, was Reserve Female for Lauren at Louisville and is looking like a female we need to work a lot harder in the IVF program. Straight from the Mirage cow family, they have a true championship pedigree with the looks to match.
Cross My Heart
Caitlin Cow Family
– Heifer Calf Lots 13-18, Bred Heifer Lot 32
Caitlin is the next great donor for our program and Scott McDonald in Michigan. Truly a beautiful cow. She has tremendous rib shape, an elegant neck and perfect shoulders, but what sets her apart in the truly elite category is her udder-quality. It is hard to find a Hereford cow with teats so small like a Holstein cow in dairy country. At 8 years old, she still has ideal teat size and shape.
We aren’t the only ones who think she is fantastic! She has been named National Champion cow-calf at Kansas City, Louisville, and the 2021 Junior National. Her show career may have ended, but we think her offspring will carry that torch for her. She had produced a past lot 1 heifer that sold for $29,000 to the Carr Family in Texas and then went on to be named a Reserve Division Champion in Kansas City, two bulls that have been division winners at KC and NAILE, and two heifer calves last year that were named Supreme Champion at the New Jersey State Fair and another that was Reserve Champion at the Iowa State Fair. Showring, udders, transmitting her genetics, we would put her up against any cow in the breed! We haven’t been selling embryos on her, so this is your only opportunity to acquire her genetics. The guesswork is done, buy with confidence!
Lots 13 – Wow! If you want a true head turner, Change My Mind is the ticket. She has been a stunner since birth. Giraffe-necked, yet great in her shoulder and forerib, so long and extended throughout. Redemption has always worked so well for us and we were fortunate to purchase some semen before his untimely death. We have loved him since we saw him win a Division in Denver in 2016. He is out of Whomaker’s full sister and has done so much good for our program including siring a reserve division champ for us at the Madison junior national. To top it off she is out of Caitlin. This one is going to look so good out in the ring and then come home to be your next donor.
A true sale feature and a full sib to a past lot 1, that sold for $29,000 to the Carr family in Texas who went on to having a great show career including winning a reserve division at KC. One of three full sisters in the sale, this polled heifer is a real stunner. She is a true beast in her build, big footed, super powerful throughout with enormous rib design, and yet so good at the ground. This heifer is ready to roll. A Caitlin daughter to boot, she will look mighty good in the donor pen after her show career! Owned with McDonald Farm.

Lots 15A & 15B – Horned full sibs to lot 14 and past full sibs to Wildcat Clarity who sold for $29,000 to the Carr family, and is now a donor for them. These full sisters are both really good. 15A reminds me the most of the Carr heifer, a little greener, but so good in her build, stylish and silky smooth with a long extended front end, we think she will really be a stunner in the ring next summer. 15B is full of cow power, heavy structured, soggy bellied and sound. With the udder quality of Caitlin behind them, we think they could be special. Owned with McDonald Farm.
Lot 16 – A horned full sister to lot 13. Really complete, flat shouldered and good structured. These late March calves are a little greener right now and I think this one could be a real sale sleeper. Seems like they get better every day and I can’t wait to see this one closer to the sale. Be sure to check out her videos which we will do towards the end of September.

Lot 17 – Fresh Prince was a bull that took OKC by storm in 2021 selling for over $100K in the national sale. We loved his look, design and cow family and we think these full sister selling as lots 18A-B, and a bred heifer 32, have so much potential. Chad Murnin, who bred Fresh Prince has a program based around functionality and udders, and this mating to Caitlin might take the udder quality to the next level. They will be fun to calve out. Lot 17 in her own right is super good looking, mahogany red, pigmented, great structure in her feet and legs with plenty of rib shape to boot. She will show and look great in your pasture every morning after that.

Lots 18A & 18B – Two more Fresh Prince x Caitlins. Lot 18A is complete, moderate and she looks so much like Caitlin in her body shape and design. 18B is good shouldered, flat muscled and looks so maternal. For those that like EPD’s they are in the top 10 percent for four EPD’s including CHB$ and teat size. The genetic power in these two as cows is unmatched and they are true breeding pieces. Fresh Prince semen was trading for $1,000 and the Caitlin frozen genetics aren’t offered for sale. Hard to find genetics where the guesswork is done to make some beautiful front pasture cows.
Lots 19A, 19B & 19C – Full sibs to lot 7 who is so impressive as well as bred heifer lot 24. Marksman daughters tend to be a little greener now and then do all the winning next summer. Swigart tells us not to sell so many heifers, but when the quality is this good, we don’t want to hold them back. 19A is horned and is built for the long run with an ideal shoulder set. 19B is still green, but is a long necked beauty with tons of potential. 19C strikes us as being so graceful in her appearance. We think these are heifers you can feed and reap the benefits next summer. Loaded with potential and out of the hottest bull of the breed, don’t miss them.
Lots 20A, 20B & 20C – We loved the power and mass in Big Country when we saw him named Horned Champion at OKC. An outcross for us, we found him so intriguing and he has not disappointed. Lots 20 A-C are full sibs to lot 6 as well as our Prodigy bull that was recently named reserve champion bull at the WI State Fair as a calf. If you like big powerful cattle, these are for you! Lot 20A is the horned version, long necked, stout standing on a huge foot. Lot 20B is huge bellied with great neck extension and looks so good when you get her parked. Lot 20C is a little greener, square, and has the same great neck extension. If you like your cattle big, and rugged with a little look, check out these girls.
Lot 22 – This Liberty Mystery mating is money! Get on the ground floor now! These last 3 open heifers are last in the catalog but are certainly not last in quality! Lot 22, 23A, & 23B are all flushmates to lot 1 and lot 2, and as a group, are our most favorite heifers in the sale. Mystery is seven years old and still so sound. These daughters all remind me of her as a calf when she sold to Lauren May as a past lot 1! They all are so sound, eye appealing and good looking that not much separates them. Lot 22 is a heifer that has an outstanding design, blending a long neck into a great shoulder, with good running gear to match. A true eye catcher.
Lot 21 – This is the only Big Country Mystery in the sale but is she a whale of a cow prospect! She is super solid from end to end. If you like them big bellied, sound, and cherry red she is for you. She also has some great tear drop markings on both sides of her muzzle which adds to her uniqueness.

HIGH ROLLER X PERSEVERANCE
We had a small family feud putting this heifer in the sale. If you are looking for a future donor with a proven pedigree & her own show record, here she is! It all starts at the ground and she has an awesome foot size and shape, with ideal leg set. She is a moderate-framed powerhouse being so thick from end to end with tremendous rib shape. She has the banners in her pocket to back up our talk being named several times champion including Illinois Preview B&O Champion as well as being named Reserve Division at Kansas City. Her full sib last year was a sale highlight selling for $30K to Kinnick Paulson where she was named 4th overall at the Iowa Beef Expo. The few High Roller cows I have seen calved in have been great cows. To top it off, Vibrant is pregnant to the Reserve Grand Champion Bull from Iowa State Fair, Convoy, who is from Pat Wall & the Valley Creek Ranch program. Convoy intrigues us an outcross bull with great numbers and look! It won’t take you long to get a heifer calf out of this female.
Full sib to lots 7 and 19A-C. She was a little green last year and didn’t make the sale but when you see what a big beautiful bred this mating makes, you can see why this Marksman x Patience mating is so special. Long necked, long body and elegant. We just love this heifer. To top it off she has a heifer pregnancy to the popular calving-ease bull, Blueprint.
If you had purchased a lottery ticket to win the donation heifer at the state sale last spring, and didn’t win, now is your opportunity to purchase her full sister. The sire is the maternal giant Advance 8923, otherwise know as “Sancho”. Sancho was named champion bull at the 2019 American Royal and his pedigree reads like a who’s who of the Hereford breed. Lot 26 is large framed, stout, sound, cowy and full of performance, she is the cowman’s kind.

Lots 27A & 27B – These two heifers are full sibs to Wildcat Purity, who had a stellar show career, including being named Reserve Junior Calf Champion at Louisville. Purity was a sale highlight last year and is now a donor for MS Cattle in Texas. Championship pedigrees and carrying Blueprint female pregnancies. Check them out if you are looking for bred heifers to add to your herd.
Lot 29 – Lot 29 is a full sister to the second high selling bull we sold at the Iowa Beef Expo this Spring who had a lot of fans. She combines the power of United with the moderate BW and cow power of Callen. Carrying a Convoy heifer pregnancy.
Lot 28 – Lot 28 is out of our young donor Callen who has been a fantastic cow. Her sire was the high selling bull at the 2021 State Sale and is now working for H-Town Cattle in Indiana. She is a moderate framed, cherry red, fresh, sound female who combines two of our best cow families. An added bonus is her Blueprint heifer calf pregnancy.

Lot 30 – This heifer is a full sister to the heifer that was Grand Champion Horned heifer at the 2021 Illinois Preview Show, Wildcat Amelia 015 ET that had so many fans. Another full sister was Reserve Grand Champion at our state Jackpot Show in 2021. Lot 30 reminds us of these two females a great deal. But I love the dam of this heifer, Adora 339C, who is possibly one of the great breed matriarchs of our time, having produced two junior national reserve champion females and several division winners. Great pedigree, phenotype and full sibs. She is a true herd builder!
Lot 31 – Contender was a bull that we thought would really click with Mystery’s power and we weren’t disappointed. Lot 31 is Mystery’s natural calf and was raised as a twin. Soft, sound and deep-bellied. You can see the maternal traits oozing from this female. We can see her being an outstanding cow.

We can’t wait to see this bred heifer in production. Full sisters selling as lots 17 and 18A-B. Chad Murnin, who bred Fresh Prince, has a program based around functionality and udders, and this mating to Caitlin might take the udder quality to the next level. Dark cherry red, sound and moderate framed and backed by some great udders. She is the front pasture kind. BJ remembers her up and nursing about 10 min after birth. Please note she still has a lot of this vigor and is not for someone without proper handling facilities.
Lot 33 – A little older but proven genetics here. The dam is a proven donor with over 100 registered offspring who was the 2006 Denver National Champion Female for the famous Ned and Jan Ward program. Right Track is a popular bull from Perks Ranch and this heifer is the result of an embryo purchase from them. A solid sound female with a Hall of Fame pedigree, she checks a lot of boxes. She is bred back to our Crackerjack son, who was Champion Bull at the Iowa State Fair, and has worked well on heifers for us. She is the only bred heifer with a bull pregnancy in the sale.
Lot 34 – A great way to close the catalog! Many of our heifers are bred back to Blueprint, and when you see this female you can understand why. Moderate in stature yet such a beautiful low birth weight female that is structurally correct and so well balanced. She was our pick of Lamb Brothers open heifers last year. Carrying a heifer pregnancy to the calving ease Convoy bull, whose calves are looking so great. A Convoy son was recently named Reserve Grand Champion Bull for the Don Putz family. Ask them how they like him when you see them at the sale!
