Welcome to our 46th Annual Bull Sale!

On behalf of all of us at Begger’s Diamond V Ranch, we thank you for your interest in our program, we value you as our friends and customers.

The past year certainly renewed our vision of why our Simmental, SimAngus and Angus program is on track with the industry. It has never been more apparent that a programs ability to serve every segment of the industry should be our goal, whether it be cow-calf man, the feeder, or the packer. All must be profitable and share the vision to produce an enjoyable eating experience for the consumer. This past year certainly threw some curve balls at all of us in agriculture, severe drought and grasshoppers, went to severe snow storms, mega winds, and hail. This really opened our eyes at how little control over Mother Nature we have and how quickly our environment can change. Last year at this time we all were preparing for a year of little rain and drought, then the snow storms of mid April hit us and hit us hard twice within 2 weeks. This set us up for a year of excellent production but it also dealt many with a heavy blow as calving season was coming into full swing for many, death loss was heavy. On the bright side, most had a good grass , hay, and crop year. Commodity prices were very good for the grain farmers, the cattle prices are very strong, and seem to be adding value right along. For many the time to rebuild our cow herds is upon us. The genetics we rebuild with or add to our current program will be a very important part of our business decisions, make sure to add the most value that you can afford because the genetics you invest in will affect your bottom line for the next 15 to 20 years. By adding Simmental genetics to your British based cowherds you will produce the best when it comes to building a maternal herd that pays the bills. Your cowherd will last longer, be more fertile and wean calves that the feeder, packer, and consumer will all enjoy. The results will be more pay weight, better feed efficiency, better carcass cutouts, and yields with little or no yield grade 4’s or 5’s while providing the best eating experiences for the consumer. We need to be profit driven and be focused on what really helps pay the bills. So many times I hear I topped the market with my little calves, it don’t matter what they weigh in the two examples I will show you. Did the little calves top the market? I don’t think so, it pays to have all your calves sell in the heavy bunch, unless you like to brag how much per lb they brought.

This past fall and into December, I noticed a lot of light weight 350-500 wt calves in the sale reports. I went a little farther and did some math. I took 2 sets of calves from two different operations that sold in 2 different sale barns the first week in December. Take a look, one set of calves weighed 529 lbs brought $222.50 per hundred netted $1177, the light wt calves off the same ranch weighed 381 lbs brought $263 per hundred and paid $1002 per head, the difference of $175 per head. Even though they brought $40.50 per hundred more they still netted $175 per head less. Another ranch sold 2 sets of the calves, the big steers weighed 657 lbs, sold for $186 per hundred brought $1222.02 per head. The little brothers weighed 389 brought $263.50 per hundred, their value was $1023.07 per head. The difference of $198.95 per head to put it in into perspective, pay weight matters. There was 120 big

steers and 54 small steers, same ranch likely the same feed program. The big steers brought $198.95 per head more too total $146,642.40 the small steers brought $55,245.78. The difference is those 54 small steers brought $198.95 less per head or $10,743.30 less as a group, even though the little steers brought $77.50 more per 100 wt, they still netted $198.95 less per head. This example is real, cows raise only one calf per year. The cows that produced the small calves whether they calved later were poor producers or were the heifer’s calves. They cost their owner $10,743.30. That’s a nice payment lost because of their lack of ability to produce a heavy calf. “Cross breeding is the most value added tool, any cowman has access to. Don’t over look it, it makes sense, dollars and cents, don’t leave it on the table.” The set of bulls we will offer are the value added kind they will calve easy, sire calves that wean heavy and are feed efficient, and add carcass value all the while giving the consumer the best eating experience. Their daughters will be easy keeping effici ent, sensible sized, moderate and deep, their udders will be outstanding, and they will be the kind you can trust when the family helps work cows. They come with the best, no hassle guarantee in the business, plus we will feed them until April 1, semen test, and deliver them free of charge. How can you beat that?

Come early, look them over, we will feed you a good steak sandwich and offer a set of value based bulls you will be proud to own.

Thanks for your interest, we value your friendship and appreciate your support.

Sincerely, Bill & Darlene John, Alicia, Charlotte, Maggie, Harrison & Gabe Amanda & Jace Virginia

WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT FROM BEGGER’S DIAMOND V RANCH GENETICS

Our goal is to offer the best when it comes to total profitability. When we select our genetics, we consider all the avenues in the beef business. First of all we look at what will keep you the cow-calf man profitable. Things such as calving ease, fleshing ability, udder quality, disposition, and phenotype, along with mature cow size, and their ability to raise a calf that is worth more at sale time, and is efficient. Producing cattle that the feeders and packers desire. How do we select our genetics? We use EPDs, dollar based Indexes such as API and TI and eye appeal, along with the ability for an animal to be productive, wean a satisfactory calf, breed back on time, and have the ability to use the feed source that our environment provides. We try to run our cows in the same way that most commercial outfits run their cattle and the cows are still in excellent condition. We believe that the API is a valuable tool to

consider, but feel that it is simply a guideline, and like all EPDs and dollar indexes, should be used as a way to split the difference between a choice of 2 animals that appear to be alike. It is just one equation that needs to be considered along with an animal’s performance, eye appeal, and ability to survive in its environment. When you purchase your seedstock, take the time to look at your suppliers’ cow herd, what do they look like, are they functional, what is their udder quality like, what is their frame size, and do they calve easy, stay in shape, and do they produce a high percentage of their body wt. We consider it all and believe we offer a good solution and end point.

Come take a look, we will have the majority of our cows available to observe, so you can see for yourself what you can expect your cowherd to look like if you use Begger’s Diamond V Ranch genetics.

We received this note from Olivia Lee. “We shipped our steers today, this year our steers were the heaviest in ranch history, weighing in at 674 lb, the heifers at 640. For the past 30 years we have been using Begger’s Diamond V Ranch Sim-Angus bulls. We strive to develop a cow that can raise a top quality replacement heifer and feeder steers buyers crave. This year’s calf crop confirm the decades of work we put into building a cowherd with growth, maternal traits, and docility.” - Olivia Lee

THE SPRING BULLS

These bulls have been through a lot, as in April we had 2 severe blizzards that was hard on calves, like most of you know. They survived quite well, although a couple of them got lost and crossed fences so their mothers dried up, they learned how to rob and made the bull pen somehow. Summer was fairly good though, they never ate creep and were weaned October 4th. We did have some feed issues that set them back for about 4 weeks until we figured out what was happening. Once we got them on track they rebounded fairly well. They may be a little greener than usual but not bad. Then here comes November and December, very cold, lots of snow, and tough on cattle. We are very pleased with how they performed and stayed healthy. These bulls are the cream of the crop, they made a tough cut. The offering is very docile and easy going, we went to zero tolerance on disposition and do ability, and we are proud of this set of bulls, they should treat you well.

If

like them clean made, eye catching, and loaded with performance don’t miss this opportunity. We are looking to add a 1/2 blood in our program and this bull was a top consideration. IN MEMORY

This past summer we lost my dad, he lived a good life right to the end. Dad celebrated his 93rd birthday, just 6 days before he passed. Dad and mom spent 72 married years together and lived alone right to the end. Dad only spent 7 days in the hospital. Dad was a hard working religious man, he never believed in being idol. His philosophy on life was, “work for what you have, don’t expect anyone to give you what you don’t have coming.” I heard my dad say many times, “do what you do do well, remember your name, be proud of it, and don’t tarnish it, keep it honest and clean.” Dad came to

the ranch everyday to work until he reached 90 years of age. He ran the swather all season long at age of 89, he was a little disappointed when we told him we had it covered at 90. He kept saying “I can run it.” One day he told a neighbor lady, “Bill fired me, he won’t let me run the swather or drive truck anymore.” She said, “Well Harry you are 90, maybe it is time to slow down.” Dad was very proud of his family and the ranch. It was God, family, and the ranch that kept him on a mission to the end. We miss him and are proud to call him dad and grandpa.

Man is this bull a beast! He is sired by our top selling Angus bulls that got a lot of attention 2 years ago. We used him on both Simmental and Angus cows with excellent success. This bull’s dam is no slouch either, she raised a $24,000 bull in the past. I really like how this bull brings it all together, excellent performance, great indexes, and powerful body shape. The serious cowman will like his kind. He should be a pound maker and his daughters should make great cows.

We watched this Tesla son all summer long, we feel he has what it takes to sire greatness. He is very complete from end to end, very deep, thick, and wide. If you like them complete, easy keeping, and moderate, here is a good one. His dam is one of our finest. We rate him as one of the best all around using bulls. He is very docile and very complete.

There is something about this bull and his cow family that is special. His grand dam is smaller in size and is very powerful. Last year she produced Lot 2 in our sale that sold for $9750, this year her 3D son Lot 34, again speaks loudly of her ability to produce the best. Her daughter F39 looks to fit the same mold, very moderate in size with the ability to raise pounds and eye appeal. I feel this cow family represents efficiency at its best. Look at this bull’s personal performance at 786 lbs. 205 adj with a 111 ratio. The best part is he will mature into a sensible mature size. His daughters will have superb udder quality, if you run your cows a little rough,

will want a pasture full of them.

This is a good one, he was born the right size and put the peddle to the metal to excel to 749 lbs at weaning. The cow family and udder quality are the best. They are very easy to look at, big ribbed, thick made, lots of volume, and clean made. I would take a whole cowherd of their kind. With Top Shelf, Range Boss and the X14 cow backing him, you can only expect the best at weaning. You will want to retain the heifers.

SUGGESTED GUIDELINES FOR USING YEARLING BULLS

We are firm believers in the use of yearling bulls and feel it is one of the best years of their lives. It is a time when they are easy to manage and their only concern is breeding cows. We have found that yearling bulls that are managed carefully during the second year of their lives, not only do well, but they will perform better, over time. Below are some suggested guidelines for the care of yearling bulls.

Upon delivery to your ranch, keep yearling bulls separate from older bulls and feed them a maintenance ration of 5-8 pounds per head of grain and free choice hay. Reduce the amount of grain fed gradually, so that bulls are on straight hay or grass 2-4 weeks prior to the breeding season.

Where possible, try to limit the bulls to 45-60 days of pasture service the first year. At this time or as soon as possible, remove the bulls and put them in separate pastures with plenty of good quality grass.

It is best to feed yearling bulls separate from older bulls until after their second breeding season. This allows them to achieve the growth and strength to compete with older bulls for feed and space.

You will see the benefit of a little added cost and care of feeding a yearling bull by probably two or three more years of service from a well managed and healthy bull.

A very nice moderate framed Iconic son out of a nice 2 year old Journey daughter. There is calving ease and sensible mature sized genes in his pedigree. Use him on young cows for calving ease and to sire excellent udder quality. This bull might be a good choice for use on heifers that are observed during calving.

This is a unique combination sired by Tesla the pound maker and out of a Journey dam, the calving ease specialist. This just might be the combination that makes a top genetic package. I believe his daughters will be the productive kind and his steers will be the feeding kind that yields very well.

We admire our Top Shelf calves, they perform with the best. They have a lot of eye appeal, and are received by commercial cattlemen with enthusiasm. This guy is royally bred, Top Shelf, Pay Dirt and the powerful A94 cow, expect this bull to sire a little more frame and length. There is some real performance genetics in this guy. His 2 yr old dam weaned with the best 751 lbs 205 for a 106 index.

Here is a moderate framed Flat Iron son that should sire thickness and volume. He comes from a 2 year old dam that is backed by the excellent C23 granddame that really catches your attention. Very broody, easy keeping, excellent udder quality, and loaded with power. This bull offers a new twist and outcross genetics.

Here is a bull that has done very well on his dam. He weaned heavy at 776 adj, out of a very well made dam that is moderate in frame and sensible sized. Our goal is to produce cattle that grow like a bad weed through weaning and in the feedlot, and still keep our mature cow size in check. This bull and his cow family fit that mold.

This bull had a little bad luck during the 2 blizzards this spring. He drifted through the fence into another pasture, so he got separated from his dam. We never realized it until it was too late, and his dam dried up, so he learned how to rob off other cows from behind, that is how he made his living. It did hurt his 205 performance, but he still came in very respectable at 693 205 adj. He offers a very nice genetic package that will enhance fleshing ability along with maternal and weaning performance.

would classify this bull as one that will add some frame but not a lot. His cow family is a little larger framed yet very roomy and full bodied. His 3 yr old dam is going to be a real nice made and attractive cow at maturity. Hercules, his sire, was the $29,500 sire prospect we purchased out of Double T Ranch. He was possibly the most talked about Sim-Angus of the 2019 sale season.

Out of a young 3 yr old dam, and the Hercules bull that caught a lot of attention 2 years ago when he brought $29,500. This bull will sire sensible sized, deep sided cattle with eye appeal. His grand dam is still in production as a 12 yr old.

This is a moderate framed easy to look at bull. His dam produced on one of our top bulls last year, his sire was retained back to use in our herd, a Data son out of a Resource dam. Use this bull to sire feeder calves that do well in the feed lot and improve yield.

THE COST OF LIGHT WEIGHT CALVES AT BIRTH

I saw this article in Sydenstricker’s catalog, and thought this article was quite interesting, and spot on to what we observe. Breed Associations still believe a lighter calf at birth is better and calculate that in their EPD’s, and dollar Indexes. We feel many of the real small have problems in the cold and at times with their lungs, and definitely they show up small at weaning time. No, we don’t like the huge born either, but on cows there is more rewards than losses with 90-95 lb calves.

Many of us have a predisposed notion that we want calving ease/low BW herd sires. But, in the Angus breed, do we really have that much problem with big calves? It seems like most of the problems at birth are more linked to abnormal presentations than actual calves that are too big for the cow or even heifer. And, it seemed like maybe those smaller calves just were not as thrifty. We decided to see if we could dig into the data, and see what survivability to weaning really looked like. After all, a small calf at birth doesn’t really help the bottom line if he dies prior to weaning anyway!

We divided up four years of spring calf crops into three groups: (light) 69 lbs. or less; (medium) 70-89 lbs.; and (heavy) 90 lbs. and up. We edited out any abortions and all twins. In a nutshell, the death loss at birth through weaning was twice as high on the light calves as it was on the medium calves. The death loss on the heavy calves was the least of the three groups, and it was the least in every one of the four years. We did not differentiate according to cause of death, or whether it was right at birth or later on pre-weaning.

We’ve all heard someone say the growth rate of a dead calf is distressingly poor, and took that to mean we needed lighter calves at birth so we would get more of them born alive. Every operation is different, but it certainly appears to us that bigger calves at birth are more likely to still be around at weaning. We would never advocate breeding heifers to anything but a true heifer bull, but our cowherds might be much better served by sires that give their calves more of a head start.

A study by the University of Illinois on Sim-Angus cattle reported the same conclusions.

85K Here is a neat genetic blend of Top Shelf and Capitalist. His granddam has proven to be long lasting, finally exiting our program at 12 years of age. We expect this bull to enhance all segments of production. Our program has wrapped its self around the Top Shelf and Connealy Capitalist with excellent results. This bull is very moderate and thick made, he should work on a set of cows that need to be down sized a little.

SPRING SIMMENTAL BULLS

COW-CALF PAIR ON SUMMER PASTURE

Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs): EPDs are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels. In using EPDs, the difference between two sires’ EPDs represents the unit difference expected in the performance of their progeny. For example, if sires A and B have EPDs of +10 and –5, a 15-unit difference would be expected in their progeny (moving from -5 to +10 yields 15 units). Key to using EPDs is knowing what units they are expressed in. For example, if the above case referred to weaning weight EPDs, A would be expected to sire 15-pounds more weaning weight than B. If calving ease were the trait, A would be expected to sire 15-percent more unassisted births in first-calf heifers; in other words, if B sired 30 assists in a group of 100 heifers, we’d expect A to require 15 assists. A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s EPDs rank him relative to other bulls in the breed. For percentile rankings or more detailed information about EPDs and $ indexes visit www.simmental.org.

Listed below are the units ASA EPDs are expressed in:

All-Purpose Index (API): Dollars per cow exposed under an all-purpose-sire scenario. (See below for more details.)

Back Fat (BF): Inches of backfat.

Birth Weight (BW): Pounds of birth weight.

Calving Ease (CE): Percent of unassisted births when used on heifers.

Carcass Weight (CW): Pounds of carcass weight.

Maternal Calving Ease (MCE): Percent of unassisted births in first-calving daughters.

Milk (MLK): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk.

Marbling (MRB): Marbling score.

Maternal Weaning Weight (MWW): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk and growth.

Ribeye Area (REA): Square inches of ribeye.

Warner-Bratzler Shear Force (WBSF): Pounds of force required to shear a steak.

Stayability (STAY): Percent of daughters remaining in the cowherd at 6 years of age.

Terminal Index (TI): Dollars per cow exposed under a terminal-sire scenario. (See below for more details.)

Weaning Weight (WW): Pounds of weaning weight.

Yearling Weight (YW): Pounds of yearling weight.

Yield Grade (YG): Yield grade score.

$ Indexes: Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide a piece of the economic puzzle. That’s where $ indexes come in. Through well-conceived, rigorous mathematical computation, $ indexes blend EPDs and economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on your bottom line. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry and dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the following $ indexes:

All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield.

Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sire for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield. Using API and TI: First, determine which index to use; if you’re keeping replacements use API, if not, TI. Then, just as with EPDs, zero in on the unit difference between bulls. (As described above, index units are in dollars per cow exposed.) The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another. Or, put another way, how much you can pay for one bull compared to another. For example, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring +100 for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a+50 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr. = $6,000). A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s index value ranks him relative to other bulls in the breed. For percentile

Here is an Iconic out of a 2 yr old Banjo dam. I really like his dam, very eye catching, deep and easy fleshing. Again another 2 yr old that went above and beyond, 750 lb 205 wt, with a 106 ratio. These bulls are a real good set. They were born and raised on the range, they were never creep fed and were raised by their mother’s milk and on the same feed as the cows received. This type management is harsh on a set of calves that are raised in the winter with no green grass. You might notice a little less weaning wt on most of them, but don’t be alarmed, they are rock solid, performance oriented bulls that can withstand the extremes. We never ran a gain test on them because we don’t push them ever. They get weaned and go back to grass early spring, they never get supplemented until they come home in late October. Again never pushed, a light 42 mega cal high roughage diet. They are bred and raised to last.

Here is a thick, deep bodied SAV Down Pour, a grandson to Rainfall. Kelly Schaaf says he is Rainfall’s best son. His dam came out of the Vermilion program as one of the lead off cows in their annual 8 year of cow dispersion. She is absolutely gorgeous , very deep, thick and complete. Here is a chance to blend two of the top Angus herds together.

BREEDING PHILOSOPHIES

We found these 3 breeding philosophies quite interesting and felt they were spot on to our own breeding principles. With permission of a 3 nationally known highly respected Angus breeders we thought they were worth sharing.

MATING FOR OPTIMAL OUTCOMES, NOT EXTREMES

Discovering the ideal percentile range for every trait we measure and understanding how those traits correlate with one another guides us to create the phenotypic makeup desired by our customers. We breed cattle toward ‘the middle’ for most all commercially relevant traits that’s the best method to drive genetic progress on all traits. By continually breeding our cowherd to the middle, we feel our matings can be more about matching kind to kind and less about mating one extreme to the other, thus creating more consistency in the ascending generations.

- Ellingson Angus, Chad & Stetson Ellingson, St. Anthony, ND

PARTING THOUGHTS

When I read David’s article it struck a strong note with me the past couple decades, the technical world took over the cattle breeding business. Just like David says AI studs universities, packing houses started dictating how to breed cattle. I am not opposed to using every form of data available, but I am very opposed to trying to breed cattle on paper alone, and shooting for extremes. Many of Americas’ cattleman have lost a lot of ground by doing so. Like David states, bad feet, poor cow efficiency,

lack of fertility, and fleshing ability, cows that can’t have a 90 lb calf, mostly due to too much EPD hype and not enough experienced eye. Folks we find it is a true give and take the best way to create uniformity, balance and cattle that work in the real world is from experience day to day observance and blending the best of both worlds. Like Chad and Stetson Ellingsons’ little article states, it is breeding towards the average and understanding that matching kind and not shooting for extremes every time makes for more consistency and will contribute more uniformity and consistency creating less cowherd fall out. The three articles were written by some of the Nation’s most respected Angus breeders. They see the writing on the wall as many astute cattlemen do. We believe our Simmental and Sim-Angus program will help propel your operation down the right road. They will compliment the Angus, Hereford, and baldy cattle very well. They will enhance fleshing ability, udder quality, and maternal traits. We run our cows rough and tough, we know how genetics work and we have the experience to know the difference. “Yes, we do have to eat them, but we also have to breed them and feed them.” Our genetics are designed to put cow efficiency back in your herd, and they still work very well in the feedlots and packing house, qualifying for carcass premiums, and creating an enjoyable eating experience for the consumer.
