EDITOR’S MESSAGE

H

Erika Kenner, Editor

appy New Year!!!

Hard to believe another year came and went! Hopefully all enjoyed time with family and friends over the holidays! One blessing that came to the cattle industry just in time for Christmas was the rise in the cattle market. It had been hard to be positive when you didn’t know if it was going to stop. Let’s hope it holds it’s own in 2016. We knew this would happen sometime. We all know agriculture commodities and livestock are cyclical and we’ll have good times and bad times. The livestock industry has been blessed with record prices for a few years now and even though this past year went down, it was still high. I found some records in my room at my parent’s house this past Fall from 1998. I was in college and didn’t have many head of cattle at the ranch, but I had sold my 3 steers that averaged 800 pounds for a total of $1,900. We’ve come a long way since then! It’s times like these that we need to make sure we run our operations as efficiently as possible. One way

to do that is by investing in genetics that will make a profit. This may be different for each operation, but in this issue, I am confident, you will find what you need, whether you are a commercial or a seedstock operation. Simmental cattle have been proven to work in crossbreeding systems and the work that Simmental and Red Angus have done with the International Genetic Solutions (IGS) proves they are committed to the commercial cattle industry. The IGS database is the largest in the world with 16,000,000 records and 12 different breed associations. IGS partners know commercial cattle producers are better when they crossbreed and have made it easier to compare themselves across the board. With that much data, one is able to make informed decisions by utilizing the EPDs. This is a whopper of an issue again and I guarantee there is something here for everyone. Enjoy the issue and look forward to what 2016 may bring! Sincerely,

Erika

CHRISTENSEN NAMED 2015 SDSA CATTLEMEN OF THE YEAR By: Cam Fagerhaug, Wessington, SD

T

he South Dakota Simmental membership is a great example of high quality Simmental breeders. They represent progressive genetics and influential producers. This year the SD Board of Directors would like to honor one of those individuals for their efforts and representation of the membership. John Christensen began small and dreamed big. He’s been in the business since Simmentals were yellow and white and rode out several generations of fads - from bad markets to great prices. He inspired several young breeders, among them, his daughters, and is still striving to better our breed. Because he lives his motto, as I’m sure most have

14 | SD SimmenTeller & ND Simmental Scene

heard him say, “Just like a chain is no stronger than it’s weakest link, an animal is no better than it’s weakest trait.” Congratulations to John Christensen for the 2015 SDSA Cattlemen of the Year.

“Don’t sell people problems.” -- John Christensen. (John’s acceptance speech.)

SD Board member Cam Fagerhaug, Wessington, presented John (her father) with the Cattlemen of the Year award.

Christensen Family in attendance: Tyler and Cam Fagerhaug and baby Lawson, John, and daughter, Carly Christensen. Not in attendance: NaLani and Rick Dunsmore and their family.

SDSA NEWS Dr. Barz, founder and owner of Northwest Veterinary Supply, Parkston, SD, and the recipient of the 2015 SD Promoter of the Year Award.

Erik Holum, DVM (left) and Jeff Shoenfelder received the Promoter of the Year Award on behalf of Dr. Barz and NW Vet Supply. SD President Jeremy Lehrman presented the award.

BARZ NAMED 2015 SOUTH DAKOTA PROMOTER OF THE YEAR By: Jeremy Lehrman, Spencer, SD

A

fter graduating from Iowa State’s Veterinary School in the spring of 1974, an energetic, naïve Iowa far boy brought his new bride to practice veterinary medicine in Mitchell, South Dakota. In 1976, they moved to a Tripp, SD farm to raise their children in a rural atmosphere. A clinic was established in Parkston, SD with haul-in facilities and Northwest Veterinary Supply began. Thirty-five years later, Dr. Dave Barz is still enjoying his

practice, the area and his clients. Barz prefers to work with large animals and small animal care while also adding carcass ultrasound services in the past 5 years. They even have a salesman that can deliver vaccine right to the farm with just a phone call. Dr. Barz has been truly instrumental in the support and future of the livestock industry in SD and particularly in the new SDSU Cow Calf Unit. He spent numerous hours of his own time soliciting donors for the auction

held during Dakotafest as well as the “Send a Cow to College” campaign. Dr. Barz has been featured in various livestock publications because of his work to assist producers with the seasonal challenges and trends. Most certainly anyone that attends Dakotafest has stopped by to grab an apple and visit with the crew at the NW Vet tent. Dr. Barz has gone above and beyond to make sure animal agriculture continues to have a positive and long lasting image.

SEND A COW TO COLLEGE Help SDSU build its new Cow-Calf Education and Research Facility How It Works 1. Complete a Deed of Gift form. 2. Notify the sale barn on the day of the sale that you have gifted your cow to the SDSU Foundation.

16 | SD SimmenTeller & ND Simmental Scene

3. Ask the sale barn to issue the payment to the SDSU Foundation and to note that the gift came from you! It is really that simple! Your cull cow will make a big difference in helping us reach our goal and remember, your gift has tax advantages as it will diminish your taxable income! If you have questions, the following is

a list of people who are familiar with the program and can help you out along the way: Cory Eich, Donnie Leddy, Jim Krantz, Fred DeRouchey, Dr. Dave Barz, Ty Eschenbaum, Lewis Bainbridge, Craig Dybedahl, Ryan Eichler or Mike Barber. source: http://www.sdsufoundation.org/cow-calf

Extra Profitability. Because. . . Quality and quantity allows you to access more 1/2 or 3/4 brothers to fill your herd sire needs in one stop. • The cow/calf producer comes first before any other traits are considered. • We know as a commercial producer you sell your cattle based on weight and how they look (quality). How value is determined varies, whether it is in the auction market, in the country, by video or on the rail. Be assured quality and performance has been the basis of our program from the beginning. • Reputation — take away all the numbers, all the EPDs and fads . . . Begger’s Diamond V Ranch has strived to raise only high-quality seedstock for over 40 years. • At Begger’s Diamond V Ranch you are not just buying a bull, you are buying a program. • Our 40 years of AI’ing and embryo transfer gives you access to the top genetics of the Simmental and Angus breeds, which allows you access to the very best genetics. • You will experience fewer time consuming management problems, especially with calving ease and calf vigor, udders, fertility, feet, legs and disposition because we cull our herd for such problems. • You are selecting from the top end, the bottom has already been culled. • Our cattle are raised in an unpampered environment to ensure that they will work for you. • EVERY bull has an efficient, hard-working mother that does her job in eastern Montana’s tough environment.

• Responsibility — We accept the responsibility to provide you with only predictable genetics. They must meet our standards before they meet yours. • Our success depends on yours and we expect your purchases to work for you. We stand behind them 100%. • Bulls are 5.5 to 6.5 frame with extra depth with volume and fleshing ability. • Bred for calving ease, fast growth, efficiency, maternal strength and carcass quality putting more profit in your pocket. • Bulls are developed for ranchers on a high roughage ration with very little starch and plenty of exercise. • Every bull was born, raised and developed on our ranch. • Maternal and direct calving ease is a must. If they are not born easily and alive, nothing else matters. • All bulls sell free of BVD and all genetics defects! Bulls sell with complete performance records, ultrasound data and EPDs. • Daughters of these bulls will make outstanding replacements that are trouble free, easy keeping and profit driven; their calves will be in high demand and top market sales. • We have connected ourselves with market opportunities that should make your calves more valuable helping you receive premiums and top markets. We offer free keep until April 1st, a breeding soundness exam, and free delivery up to 500 miles.

NDSA NEWS

NDSA PROMOTER OF THE YEAR AWARDED TO MEMBER FROM SOUTH DAKOTA By: Mike Traxinger, Houghton, SD

K

ipp Julson, Garretson, SD was surprised with the honor of the ND Simmental Association Promoter of the Year award at the ND Simmental Annual banquet on December 11 in Bismarck. Kipp has spent a lifetime in the cattle industry promoting the Simmental breed and cattle in general. As a toddler, he would be found sleeping with the calves in the barn, or the family dog, or even the Shetland pony. At the age of 3, he could detect a lame or sick animal in the herd and had already learned what it meant to artificially inseminate. Again at the age of 3, he was caught with the A.I. tank open, wearing a sleeve with a pipet in hand, ready to AI the Blue Heeler. After that incident his father had to place a padlock on the AI tank. The next skills he developed were sales and marketing. You could often find him selling chickens, rabbits, goats at horse sales with both grandfathers. Not sure that many go to a horse sale and expect to buy a rabbit, but apparently Kipp “got er done.” When Kipp was a sophomore in high school, his father was injured in an accident, requiring that he step up and take the reins over the operation. Even at such a young age, he had the patience, persistence and passion for the cattle industry and the Simmental breed. Kipp is the 3rd generation of leadership on the farm, with a

Simmental Cattle operation that was established in 1974, and they will host their 42nd annual bull sale this upcoming January. Under his leadership, the operation has exhibited and sold cattle at the North Dakota Simmental Classic, the Sioux Empire Fair, the South Dakota State Fair, Dakota Fest, Sioux Empire Farm Show, Black Hills Stock Show, Watertown Winter Farm Show, Denver Stock Show, and the South Dakota Simmental Source Sale. He has had the honor of having a Supreme Champion Bull at the Sioux Empire Farm Show, along with many other recognitions. Today, Double J Farms runs 175 head of Registered Simmental, SimAngus and a few Angus with the majority being purebreds, both blacks and reds under the ASA’s Performance Records Program. Double J Farms is unique in having more pasture and rangeland than tillable acres. They raise grass and alfalfa hay, oats, corn, and cover crops being the latest venture to be added. His father, Bob Julson was an ABS Technician for many years, and Kipp has followed in his fathers’ footsteps, holding the same ABS position held by his father. Supposedly, the numbers are worn off his cell phone and everyone who knows him, knows he supports cattle people, both young and old for the betterment of themselves and their cattle throughout the Dakotas and

beyond. He has shared his learned knowledge, given monetary contributions to the youth programs and volunteered endless hours of time and effort serving as a friend, neighbor, active member of the association, director, manager, and president of the South Dakota Simmental Association and Beef Breeds Council. It is fitting that he receives the award this year, as 2015 has been an amazing year for him. He married his amazing wife Jana with two kids, Tessa (13) and Drew (11). Grandpa Julson is excited to have the family back in 4-H again and is taking bets on how many show animals these kids will end up with this next summer. 2015 also resulted in the completion of a new shop and sale facility located at the farm near Garretson, S.D. We are all grateful for the leadership and dedication, and unselfishness that Kipp has given to the Association.

Hammer

Barstow Cash

We are excited about what the future holds with Profit, he combines class and balance with a great producing cow that we raised and impressive EPDs and data. To top it off he had an 18 inch ribeye and ratioed 105 for IMF.

Hammer is another Upgrade son that we used heavily, they are born light and grow like weeds. The Hammer’s were the high weaning rationing calves of the 2015 calf crop.

Vision is an Upgrade son that we love the calves. Medium framed and have the same figures as his industry leading sire. His sons are going to be a highlight at the ranch.

Barstow Cash is a household name for calving ease and growth. We bred every heifer on the place to him. We have 10 of his sons available this spring.

TOPP NAMED NDSA PIONEER AWARD RECIPIENT By: NDSA Board Member, Tim Clark, Turtle Lake, ND

Above: Wayne Topp received the award from ND Board member Tim Clark. At Right: Original ND Simmental Board of Directors. Left to right: Lloyd Weckerly, Bob Otto, Dean Olson, Dallas Hystad, Jim Grantier, Arnold Woodbury, Bill Stegner, Lamour Jennings, Jake Larson, Gary Meyer, George Adams, Wayne Topp and Bob Dydwad.

W

ayne Topp, New Rockford, ND, received the 2015 NDSA Pioneer Award at the ND Simmental banquet in Bismarck on December 11, 2015. His ASA number is 236, issued March 12, 1969. Most of us have three more digits if not two added to our membership number. He was the 5th ND member to receive an ASA membership and he was a member of the original ND Simmental board. His first animal registered was a Bismarck daughter out of a Hereford cow, born March 23, 1970, Miss Bismarck XXVIII, registration number 0004900. Wayne Topp is a true Pioneer of the ND Simmental Association and

American Simmental Association. Wayne began AI’ing with Simmental semen as soon as he could in the spring of 1969. The first year he obviously used Parisian and Bismarck - ASA numbers 1 and 2. Wayne worked for ABS along with ranching. He was looking for a breed to add pay weight and performance to his Hereford cows. From what he saw with the Charolais breed, there was more birth weight then he liked. Wayne decided to look to Simmental genetics to add his performance and pay weight. Wayne participated in the early State Sales, which began in the early 70’s selling halfblood bulls and females. Wayne sold bulls

private treaty off the ranch until the early 80’s when they began their first sale at the Carrington sale barn and continued to have an annual bull sale until 1995. Wayne continues to run a small herd of cows and uses Simmental genetics. Wayne’s last bull purchase was from Bruce Kjelgaard, McHenry, in one of his last sales. Along with Wayne on the original board, other members were Lloyd Weckerly, Dallas Hystad, Bob Otto, Gary Meyer, Dean Olson, George Adams, Arnold Woodbury, Jake Larson, Bob Dydwad.

T

he North Dakota Simmental Association awarded Norm Baakegard, Kindred, ND, with the 2015 Pioneer Award at the Annual Banquet in Bismarck on December 11. Following graduation from NDSU in 1962 with an Animal Science Degree, Norm joined NDSU Extension Service serving Benson County in Minnewaukan. He then moved to Jamestown in 1964 employed as a nutritionist/ sales rep for Gold Label Feeds, which was the beginning of a long professional career traveling throughout the upper Midwest assisting livestock producers. The progression of ownership from Gold Label Feeds to Zip Feeds then to FeedRite Feeds and eventually to Hubbard Feeds occurred while Norm established and operated his Simmental herd. Norm first used Simmental semen in 1969 breeding some leased cows to obtain his first half-blood calves. He arranged an agreement with Charlie Frey who operated a commercial cow-calf operation east of Jamestown to

feed and house the bred cows. Following weaning the fall of 1970, Norm retained the heifer calves and eventually upgraded the herd to purebred status. Gold Label Feeds transferred Norm to their eastern North Dakota territory in 1974, at which time he purchased a farm near Kindred and moved his herd from Jamestown. His demanding travel schedule for work often required the involvement of his three young daughters and his wife Sharon to feed and manage the herd in his absence. Like many cattle operators that have full-time off farm employment, Norm spent many early mornings, late nights and weekends working with his cattle. Norm became an ASA member in 1970 and was a charter member of the North Dakota Simmental Association. He participated in the early ND State Simmental sales and merchandised his cattle by private treaty. In addition to the ND Simmental Association, he was involved in numerous livestock organizations and committees

throughout his career. Norm and his family participated in the ND Winter Show promoting their cattle and the Simmental breed through the show ring and the Performance Steer Classic Show. Norm credits the strong maternal characteristics of Simmental females and the calm disposition of the breed as traits that attracted him to start his herd. These same traits sustained his herd and the Simmental breed during the “long, tall and lean” era of the 1970’s and 1980’s. The value of measurable performance and functional productivity allowed the Bakkegard herd and the Simmental breed to succeed. A series of serious health problems forced Norm to disperse his herd in 1999 after his 2nd open heart surgery. Norm tributes his involvement with Simmental cattle for the current success of his children and grandchildren through their real life experiences involved in the care, nurturing and responsibility that created respect for the cattle that made up the Bakkegard Simmental Herd. NDSA 2015 COMMERCIAL PRODUCER OF THE YEAR By: Kevin Hansen, Ryder, ND Faye & Richard Hoffart receive their Commercial Producer plaque from Kevin Hansen, Ryder, ND.

T

he North Dakota Simmental Association Commercial Cattlemen of the Year Award goes to a 4th generation cattleman from the Rugby area. Richard and Faye Hoffart have dedicated many years of work to the commercial cattle industry. The ranch had its beginnings as a Homestead back in 1904. In 1978, they purchased a group of 20 cows from the Breaks in Montana and that was the beginning of the progressive herd. The prices for that first set of steers hit an astonishing $.21/lb and the heifers came in at $.19/lb. They decided in the 1980’s that a change needed to be made so they began to AI the cow herd, using bulls that would produce heavier calves. They tried different breeds of cattle always trying to

produce cattle that had growth, milk, maternal ability, fertility, and disposition. The different breeds they used lacked some of the traits they were seeking until they landed on Simmental crossed with Red Angus. Using the combination of the Chaps program and AI, they made rapid improvement in the resulting calf crop, culling off the bottom end cattle accelerated the improvement. In 1992, Richard attended an AI school in Rubgy where he met Wade Staigle, who was the instructor. They currently synchronize 70-90 head of cattle annually using some of the top sires of the breed along with purchasing powerful herd sires that are also used in the AI program through custom farm collection. They use the services of

Dave Dockter who is instrumental in the synchronization program to accomplish the goals they have set for themselves. The Hoffart’s also produce a variety of small grains including wheat, oats, soybeans, black turtle beans, grain corn, silage corn, and alfalfa hay, along with one of the top group of calves to be marketed in the region. The steer calves sold in early December in Rugby hit 945 pounds while the heifer calves are marketed to progressive cattlemen in the area directly off the ranch. The NDSA congratulates Richard and Faye Hoffart and thanks them for their years of dedication to the commercial cattle industry using Simmental genetics.

SCHUMACHER & HEILMAN RECEIVE OUTSTANDING JUNIOR AWARDS By: Darcy Klain and Kim Myers – ND Junior Advisors

T

he 2015 Outstanding Junior in the Senior Division is Patrick Schumacher, Linton, ND. Patrick has loved helping on the farm since he was very young and started showing cattle at the age of 11. He has been a huge help on his family’s operation and is always there to lend a hand especially during picture day, sale time, and calving. Patrick’s love for Simmental cattle started when he showed his first bred heifer at the age of 12 that was purchased in ND State Simmental Sale as a heifer calf. He enjoys sorting through replacement heifers and bulls and is always on the lookout for his next show heifer! Patrick has also become a mentor to many younger than him, especially his brother Daniel, who has started showing cattle and enjoys spending time with his big brother! He has made many life-

long friends at junior shows and fairs. Patrick currently owns a small herd of Simmental cows and hopes to expand when he is finished with college. He is currently a Junior at NDSU studying Animal Science. The 2015 Outstanding Junior in the Junior Division is Heath Heilman, Voltaire, ND. Heath is the son of Leo and Angie Heilman. He is in 5th grade at Velva Public School. His hobbies include basketball, baseball, football and was a member of the crop judging team this last year. His hopes are to join the livestock judging team this next January. He has been active in his local 4-H Club and also the Jr. North Dakota Simmental Association and ND Junior Points Association showing Simmental and SimAngus heifers that his family

Junior Advisor Darcy Klain presented the Outstanding Junior Award to Heath Heilman. 54 | SD SimmenTeller & ND Simmental Scene

raises on their purebred and commercial Simmental Ranch. Heath also received the Grand Champion Beef Showman this summer at the McHenry County Livestock Show. Heath has started building his own herd of Simmental and SimAngus cows and purchased some females from the ND Simmental State sale and also from local breeders. This past year he rented his own pasture from his grandpa and started making his own decisions on his genetics through AI’ing his cows, which he greatly enjoys. He is always trying to learn something new about bloodlines or feed rations and staying active on the ranch. Heath has made many new friends and enjoys learning about the cattle industry by being involved in the North Dakota Jr. Simmental Association.

Junior Advisor Darcy Klain presented the Outstanding Junior Award to Patrick Schumacher.
