EDITOR’S MESSAGE I
6
t is strange to say this will be my last editor’s message in this magazine. In January, I resigned from the editor/ad sales job for the ND Simmental Scene/ SD SimmenTeller. It was getting too hard to balance everything in my own operation and still do the magazine justice. I have appreciated working with everyone through the past few years and have really enjoyed being a part of this magazine. The ND and SD Simmental Boards will be interviewing applicants for my replacement, so please contact them for more information. See the ad on page 18 in this issue for more information.
20
This is also the last issue until November! So take note of the up-coming events in the states! The ND and SD State Associations have a busy Summer and Fall planned! Make plans to attend the North Central Regional Classic in Huron, SD, in June, where you can witness the hard work all the junior members put in to the educational competitive events and the heifer show. North Dakota has been selected to host the ASA Fall Focus in Bismarck, ND, in September, which includes a full day educational symposium and the opportunity to observe and participate in the Fall ASA Board meetings. If you can’t attend either of those events, but want to help, contact the state association board members to see how you can volunteer or donate money for each of the functions! The ND and SD Associations are also putting together a joint breeder’s directory to hand out at the events. Make sure to showcase your operation to all the out-of-state visitors! See more information on that in this issue as well! Let’s make this a great year! I’ve bragged about the people of the Dakota’s in every issue it seems, so now we have the opportunity to show people from across the country how great we are! I’ve always appreciated how well we all work together here and support each other even though we are competitors in business. Let’s prove that to everyone again!
Erika Kenner, Editor
Thank you for the year’s of support! Sincerely,
Erika 2 | SD SimmenTeller & ND Simmental Scene

SDSA ANNUAL MEETING
SOUTH DAKOTA CATTLEMAN OF THE YEAR
The Dale Werning Family has been raising Simmental cattle for generations at their ranch near Emery, SD, making them no stranger to the industry. Their genetics are found in a multitude of different purebred and commercial operations across the country. The Werning Family has done a tremendous job of promoting Simmental cattle and their value to a producer’s bottom line. Dale and family have exhibited bulls at the NWSS in Denver and the boys have participated in numerous Jr National Simmental Shows, along with promoting their cattle at the SD State Fair. It is truly a family operation as Scott and Jared are both involved in the operation on a daily basis and daughter Jill lives nearby to help when needed. You can see both Jared and Scott at regional and national shows either judging or helping out the juniors; they understand the importance the young people play in growing and sustaining our industry. Dale and the family will host their 36th Annual Production Sale February 14, 2017, at their sale facility at the ranch near Emery, SD. The South Dakota Simmental Association congratulates the Dale Werning Family on such a great honor and a job well done.
SD Simmental Association donates $10,000 to the North Central Regional Simmental Show.
SOUTH DAKOTA PROMOTER OF THE YEAR
Kelly Schmidt is certainly a familiar face when it comes to Simmental cattle and Simmental events in the Midwest. It’s hard to imagine what Kelly’s contact list looks like. He was a field representative for numerous years with the American Simmental Association and most recently is a part of Eberspacher Enterprises. Safe to say, anyone involved in the Simmental breed that has visited with Kelly can certainly see his passion for the breed. He is always willing to assist with any type of event that is promoting the breed or the great youth that are a part of the Simmental breed. Many breeders have stated that he has a great eye for great cattle whether you are looking for a new herd sire, donor cow, or that sought after show heifer; you can trust Kelly Schmidt. Congratulations Kelly and thank you for all you do to promote Simmental Cattle.
SD Cattleman of the Year Award – the Dale Werning Family, Emery, SD. Presented by Jeremy Lehrman, SD Simmental President.
SCHOLARSHIPS
Once again this year, the SD Simmental Association awarded a scholarship to a Senior or Post-Secondary student that has been involved in the Simmental breed. The applicants write an essay about how the Simmental breed has influenced their lives. This year’s Scholarship winner is Cagney Effling, Highmore South Dakota. She is the daughter of Chris and Kristi Effling.
GRANTS AWARDED
The SD Simmental Association awarded five $500 heifer grants again this year to Juniors within the organization. This award is designed to help kids that have a passion for the Simmental breed get established in buying females. They are able to use the grant to purchase a heifer at any of the State Simmental Sales SD Simmental Source Sale, Sioux Empire Farm Show, Black Hills Stock Show, or Watertown Winter Farm Show. This year’s winners are Cash Lehrman, Drew Pederson, Tessa Pederson, Anna Field, and Matthew Field. Be on the lookout for info about the 2017-2018 program this fall. NORTH DAKOTA JUNIOR MEMBERS COMPETE IN STEER PROFITABILITY
T
he American Simmental Association and the American Junior Simmental Association introduced a new program for the youth this year that allows the juniors a hands-on experience of feeding and marketing steers. The program allows up to three steers to be entered and all are fed at Chappell Feedlot in Chappell, NE. All the participants own the cattle all the way through and will receive the data back on their steers. They are also eligible to compete for the highest gains and most profitable and will receive awards in the end. Conner Kaelberer, New Salem, ND, is one of the ND junior Simmental members who is participating in the Junior Steer Profitability Competition this year. Conner is the son of Claye and Michelle Kaelberer of Kaelberer Simmental Ranch and is a junior in high school at New Salem Public School. When visiting with Conner, you can hear the excitement in his voice for the Steer
Profitability program. He stated they are required to attend one webinar per month and write a summary about what they learned from each webinar after they complete them. So far, the webinars have included topics like the Veterinary Feed Directive, the importance of vaccines and medicines and how to use EPDs in cattle selection. Conner said ND State Veterinarian, Dr. Susan Keller has given at least one of the webinars and he thinks all of them were extremely interesting, but especially the one where Dr. Keller taught the importance of vaccines and the use of medicines. She also explained the importance of bangs vaccinating heifers. Conner also said the webinar on EPDs was interesting for kids that weren’t already familiar with them. ASA staff member Emily Lochner has kept the participants informed and even sent photos of their steers to them a few weeks ago.
Conner highly recommends other kids to sign up for this opportunity this next year. “It gives kids an opportunity to learn about the industry through the webinars. 99% of the information is useful information that we can apply in every day life in our operations. Emily has done a great job keeping everyone informed and the trucking went very smoothly to get the steers to the feedlot.” Conner is excited to see how his steers do in the end and says the anticipation of waiting for those results keeps everyone engaged. So far he feels they’ve gained pretty well and they had a good start before they went. The other North Dakota Junior Simmental participant is Natalie Bergquist from Turtle Lake, ND. For more information on how to participate for 2017, contact Emily Lochner at American Simmental Association at elochner@simmgene. com or log on to www.simmental.org. ASA NEWS - BOLT
IGS MULTI-BREED STAYABILITY: FIRST EPDS USING BOLT Written by: Drs. Jackie Atkins, Lauren Hyde and Wade Shafer
B
ozeman, MT - It’s here! The Spring 2017 evaluation includes a multi-breed Stay EPD using the much-anticipated new genetic evaluation software, dubbed BOLT (Biometric Open Language Tools). The Stay EPD uses a random regression approach to predict stayability developed by Dr. Janusz Jamrozik and colleagues from the University of Guelph and the Canadian Simmental Association. Dr. Scott Speidel at Colorado State University, Dr. Bruce Golden (Theta Solutions), and the genetics team at International Genetic Solutions (IGS) (Lauren Hyde, Wade Shafer, Mahdi Saatchi, and Steve McGuire) worked together to incorporate the new methodology into the IGS evaluation. The new stayability evaluation includes data on animals of varying breed composition, directly incorporates genomic data, produces true accuracy values and provides Stay EPDs to all IGS partners on a common base. Features of the Multi-breed stayability with BOLT: 1) Multi-breed stayability. As mentioned, the new Stay EPD is calculated for all cattle in the database (not just for purebred and fullblood Simmental, as it was in past evaluations). The calculation of EPDs in this fashion required the new evaluation to account for heterosis, which can be sizable for a trait like stayability. Because stayability has a major impact on profit, having Stay EPDs on all cattle will substantially improve the ability of the All Purpose Index to predict differences in profit on hybrid and cattle of other breeds. 26 | SD SimmenTeller & ND Simmental Scene
2) Direct incorporation of genomic data. This evaluation represents the first time “Single Step” methodology has been used in the beef industry on a large database. The innovative approach refers to DNA marker results being incorporated directly into the genetic evaluation, rather than being incorporated post evaluation or as a correlated trait. Single Step is widely accepted as the most powerful means of leveraging DNA for genetic prediction. The use of a Single Step approach on a large database (the largest in the beef industry) was made possible through the use of BOLT, ASA’s revolutionary new software developed by researchers Dorian Garrick and Bruce Golden through Operation Quantum Leap. 3) More “accurate” prediction of accuracy. Prior to BOLT, the calculation of EPD accuracy was relegated to using indirect methods that were very imprecise, which commonly resulted in calculated accuracies being a poor estimate of the EPD’s true accuracy, i.e., an EPD assigned a high accuracy may have truly been a low accuracy EPD and vice versa. Until the development of BOLT, the direct calculation of accuracy was thought to be impossible on a large database due to computational limitations. By leveraging statistical methodology unique to genetic evaluation and cutting-edge computer programming, BOLT calculates accuracy directly, thereby making it a much more “accurate” estimate of true accuracy. Because the indirect methods used prior to BOLT tended to overestimate accuracy, you will notice that the accuracies associated
with our new Stay EPDs will tend to be lower than the accuracies calculated in the prior evaluation of stayability. This does not mean that we are predicting stayability less accurately than in our previous evaluationin fact, due to BOLT’s ability to leverage phenotypes and genotypes more effectively we are actually predicting stayability with considerably more accuracy-it does mean that the published accuracy is a better gauge of how much confidence you should have in an EPD. This fact will help seedstock and commercial producers manage selection risk. 4) Change in base. Breeders will see significant movement in Stay EPDs from previous evaluations, not only because of improvements in methodology, but also because of a change in base. However, changing the base does not affect the ranking of cattle; it simply shifts all EPDs up or down by the same increment. For a point of reference, in the prior evaluation 21 was the average Stay EPD on purebred animals born over the last 2 years, where the average on the same animals is 11 under our new system. Founded in 1968, the American Simmental Association is headquartered in Bozeman, MT. ASA is committed to leveraging technology, education and collaboration to accelerate genetic profitability for the beef industry. In keeping with its commitment, ASA, along with its partners, formed International Genetic Solutions - the world’s largest genetic evaluation of beef cattle.
