Summer Skin Repair by Lisa Makrides, MD, PC
T
he summer is over and the damage is done. I like to think of the end of the summer season and the beginning of fall as the perfect time to exfoliate. Exfoliation is the key to turning over the damaged and dead skin cells that remain after a summer of outdoor activity with its sun exposure and environmental insults. Chemical peels are just what the doctor ordered. Chemical peels have been around for centuries. The Egyptians used fruit acids and lactic acids from milk to peel the skin some 5,000 years ago. Chemical peels involve the use of agents that wound the skin. The wounds that are created induce a healing process that repairs the skin in a way that looks and feels better. Not only is the look and feel better but there are chemical reactions and significant tissue remolding that happen with chemical peeling. The depth of the chemical peel will dictate how much “wound” is created and what degree of new tissue will be generated. Superficial peels will make surface irregularities less noticeable and clients will generally feel they look better. However, the deeper peels will stimulate the most collagen remodeling and thus do more anti-aging. Who should do a chemical peel? Everyone should do chemical peels. Some clients want to reduce fine lines and wrinkles; others want to control acne and diminish scarring or reduce the sun damaged skin that has abnormal cell growth. And some clients want to reduce pigmentation abnormalities. Peeling benefits all skin types, men and women alike. Essential to the peeling process is choosing the right peel. Not all people or skin types will tolerate or react well to every peel. That is why each client needs a thorough evaluation and each peel should be tailored to each client. Peels include salicylic acid, glycolic acid, lactic acid, resorcinol, and retinoic acid to name a few. Some professionals will mix peels to custom treat a client. Anyone considering a chemical peel needs to seek a provider who has in-depth understanding of the chemicals and their components. Once you have peeled away the old, unattractive skin, the treating physician or aesthetician has a new canvas on which to work their “magic”. After the peeling process it is essential to use at-home products like retinols and antioxidants which reduce the breakdown of collagen and elastin. At home pharmaceutical grade products will keep the skin looking and feeling beautiful and youthful.

Common Myths about
Hearing Loss just have some minor surgery like my I’ll friend did, and then my hearing will be okay. Many people know someone whose hearing improved after medical or surgical treatment. It’s true that some types of hearing loss can be successfully treated. With adults, unfortunately, this only applies to 5-10% of cases.
have one ear that’s down a little, but Ithe other one’s okay.
Nearly all patients who believe that they have one “good” ear actually have two “bad” ears. When one ear is slightly better than the other, we learn to favor that ear for the telephone, group conversations, and so forth. It can give the illusion that “the better ear” is normal when it isn’t. Most types of hearing loss affect both ears fairly equally, and about 90% of patients are in need of hearing aids for both ears.
loss affects only “old people” Hearing and is merely a sign of aging.
Only 35% of people with hearing loss are older than age 64. There are close to six million people in the U.S. between the ages of 18 and 44 with hearing loss, and more than one million are school age.
Your hearing loss cannot be helped.
In the past, many people with hearing loss in one ear, with a high frequency hearing loss, or with nerve damage have all been told they cannot be helped, often by their family practice physician. This might have been true many years ago, but with modern advances in technology, nearly 95% of people with a sensorineural hearing loss can be helped with hearing aids.

Oral Health: A window to your overall health H
ealthy oral health and a healthy body go hand in hand. Good oral hygiene and oral health can improve your overall health and reduce the risk of serious disease. There is increased scientific evidence of this connection between oral health and overall health. Your mouth may harbor the first signs of disease, and diseases of the mouth, such as gum disease, can cause problems in other parts of the body. Your mouth is loaded with bacteria which can be kept under control with brushing, flossing and regular dental visits. Saliva also defends against bacteria because it contains enzymes that destroy bacteria. But if the bacteria are not kept in control, a gum infection, or periodontitis, can result. Gum disease may provide bacteria with a means to enter your bloodstream. Dental treatment might also be a means whereby bacteria can enter the bloodstream. • Research has shown that heart disease, stroke and clogged arteries may be linked to periodontal, or gum, disease. • Gum disease has also been linked to premature births. • Diabetes increases your risk of gum disease and oral infections. And poor oral health can make your
by Terry S. Shapiro D.M.D.
diabetes more difficult to control. Oral infections can cause your blood sugar to rise, requiring more insulin for its control. • People who have HIV/AIDS often exhibit oral manifestations, including ulcers, dry mouth and painful fungal, viral or bacterial lesions. One of the first signs of AIDS may be severe gum infection. • The first stages of osteoporosis, or bone loss, may manifest in loss of supporting bone of the teeth, resulting in loose teeth. • Other conditions that may first exhibit in your mouth include Sjogren’s syndrome, some cancers, eating disorders, sexually transmitted diseases and substance abuse. The relationship between your oral health and your overall health provides another good reason to take care of your teeth and gums. An investment in your oral health is an investment in your overall health! Terry S. Shapiro, D.M.D. is located at 20 Old Post Rd. in E. Setauket. Restorative & Cosmetic Dentistry By Dr. Terry S. Shapiro - Serving Long Island for over 20 years
T
Two prospective patients came into the office recently with the same complaint. Both had lost all of their
teeth and were wearing worn-out and ill-fitting dentures. Their dentures were loose; they had trouble eating foods they would have liked; their faces had that sunken-in look and they were in pain. Their previous dentists recommended implants to stabilize the dentures. The problem was that as they were both retired and on fixed incomes they could not afford implants. What to do? Yes, implants are a wonderful service and have revolutionized what we can do to improve lives. I love implants! But due to the laboratory and materials costs involved, they are expensive. My approach is different from
other dentists. I make new, customfitted dentures for my patients and explain to them that if the new dentures don't fit and function well, we can then add implants. My experience is that the denture patient does very well with the new dentures and often decides not to add the implants. Implants are always an option but they don’t have to be the first option. I believe that patients like these can be well served with well-fitting dentures.

calories
How many have you burned today?
B
eing active is an important part of any weight-loss or weightmaintenance program. When you're active, your body uses more energy (calories). And when you burn more calories than you consume, you lose weight. Because 3,500 calories equals about 1 pound (0.45 kilogram) of fat, you need to burn 3,500 calories more than you take in to lose 1 pound. So if you cut 500 calories from your diet each day, you'd lose about 1 pound a week (500 calories x 7 days = 3,500 calories). Exercise along with cutting calories helps boost your weight loss. Exercise is also important for maintaining your weight and not regaining weight lost. As a general goal, include at least 30 minutes of physical activity in your daily routine. If you want to lose weight, maintain weight loss or meet specific fitness goals, you may need to increase your activity even more. This chart shows the estimated number of calories burned while doing various exercises for 30 minutes. Specific calorie expenditures vary depending upon the exercise, intensity level and your individual situation.

Accessorizing with Jewelry 101 D
on’t you just love a compliment? Doesn’t it just make your day? When you hear, “Wow, you look great,” don’t you find yourself standing a little bit straighter, walking a little bit taller? When you are confident in your look, it shows in everything you do. Jewelry can change the way people see you, and better yet, it can change the way you see yourself. The jewelry you select speaks for you; it can convey confidence, femininity, elegance, even whimsy. A woman empowers herself by deciding how she wants the rest of the world to see her. Today, we have the benefit of the “affordable luxury”, designer-inspired fashion jewelry. Designer-inspired pieces deliver the same upscale, prestigious designer look, but at a fraction of the price. Designer-inspired jewelry bridges the divide between the real thing and fashion jewelry. Again, is it real or pretend? Who would ever know? Consider your wardrobe and then have fun experimenting. You will see just how jewelry can add sparkle, style and sophistication to your total look with a few new ideas…. Ever wonder when to wear gold and when to wear silver? As a rule of thumb, you wear silver with colors that come from the sky (blue, grey, white and pastel colors), and gold with colors that come from the earth (brown, red, green, etc). V-neck tops are universally flattering, and leave room for that daring necklace. Amazing things happen when some big, bold, statement pieces are added. Wearing solid black, or any dark solid color from head to toe, has a slimming effect. Adding long chains and necklaces maximizes the impact. Mix different length chains in a variety of metals and colors, and for a fresh flair, try wearing multiples of longer chains knotted low creating a “Y”. Want to positively glow? Pearls and pinks bring out the color in your cheeks. Pearls look classic and chic when worn either long and layered, or twirled into a short choker. Are you a full figured gal? You want to wear medium to large-size jewelry rather than pieces which are very small and delicate. Avoid necklaces which rest on the breast line. How about you seniors? Seniors looks best in longer necklaces and chains which do not draw attention to the neck area. Blondes look best in dark stones because they provide a more striking contrast than pastels. Black, pearls, emeralds and sapphires are a good choice. Bright stones are wonderful for the redhead. Greens and blues are the most flattering. You can wear amethysts well, and the subtle pink hue of pearls is quite flattering. Brunettes look best in greens, reds, pastels and golden 14 | Summer ‘10 | generations
colors. Pearls are also lovely with dark hair. Grey, silver or white haired women can forget all the rules about contrast. Dark stones such as rubies, sapphires or emeralds are terrific, but diamonds or clear crystals are impossible to beat. Black is also stunning for the woman with silver hair. If you wear only one piece of jewelry – make it a pair of earrings. Earrings add vibrancy to your complexion and sparkle to your eyes. These little baubles make all the difference in the world; they give you that “finished” look. Wearing jewelry completes your outfit and gives you a well-put-together look. So go ahead – have some fun and discover the great power of jewelry. hatever your age, there are standard essentials every woman should have as part of her makeup kit. I suggest making your kit seasonal, meaning put away colors you are not using. Resist the impulse to buy trendy makeup; buy only what suits you. The fewer items you have in your kit, the less time you will spend in front of the mirror, and remember, less is more.
The Essentials: F Moisturizer with SPF : Not only for protecting your skin, but it's also the key to flawless makeup. Soft, supple skin is the perfect pallet to begin your make-up application. F Light weight foundation or a tinted moisturizer: Evening out your skin tone will give a more flawless appearance. Suggestion: Apply with a sponge or foundation brush, not your fingers. Powder sparingly, if necessary; a heavily powdered face will age you. F Concealer: Find one that matches your skin tone. If it’s too light it will bring out any puffiness you may have. Concealers with built-in brighteners will help minimize any darkness.. F Eyelid primer: Evens out the eyelids and holds the eye color in place. Primer can act as eye shadow or you can apply eye shadow on top. Suggestion: Go with a light color to brighten up the lid which will give it a lift. F Eyeliner: Defines the eye. Cake liner lasts longer and does not smudge; use a brush for application. If you decide a pencil is best for you, find one that's smudge 18 | Summer ‘10 | generations
proof. Suggestion: Navy looks good on just about any eye color and it brightens the whites of the eyes. F Eyebrow pencil: As we age the brow may become sparse from years of over-tweezing. Filling in your brows will give you a more youthful look. F Mascara: Everyday essential, opens your eyes. Replace your mascara every three months or so. Suggestion: Stick with black, especially if your eyelashes are sparse. F Blush: Gives a youthful glow to the cheeks. Suggestion: Choose neutral tones as opposed to bright/dark colors. F Lip pencil: Filling in your whole lip will give you a fuller lip appearance. Also will help fill in the lines and prevent lipstick from feathering off. Suggestion: Do not use a color darker than your lipstick. F Lip Color: Whether it be lipstick or gloss, for a more natural appearance, use color with a sheerer consistency. F Line Filler is one last item I keep in my makeup kit. Smooth out any lines for a youthful, flawless finish. Carrying along a few items for touch up will keep you looking fresh. I would include your lip color, translucent powder with travel brush, and some hydrating mist.

River Valley
Foliage Rendezvous by Diana Erbio
M
other Nature’s palette is loaded up with burnt oranges, fiery reds, brilliant plums and golden hues and her brush is busy painting lively landscapes. These vibrant visions are fleeting so make plans to view the vivid vistas before they vanish. Only an hour and a half drive from New York City, the rolling hills of the Hudson River Valley are awash in autumn color anxiously awaiting spectators. The show begins around mid September with the higher elevations being colored first and continues through the end of October as color spreads to the lower levels. U.S. Highway 9, on the east side of the Hudson River, connects to a number of corridors to explore. This side of the Hudson River is dotted with quaint towns, historic mansions and spectacular views of the cliffs across the river. One such vantage point is from the Vanderbilt Mansion National Historic Site on Route 9, in Hyde Park. From here leaf peepers can see the Hudson River and get a fantastic view of the Catskill Mountains adorned in autumn attire. On the west side of the Hudson River is Route 9W (the Palisades Interstate Parkway) which also connects to many scenic routes that follow the fall foliage display. Those seeking colorful panoramas should venture into Bear 20 | Summer ‘10 | generations
Mountain State Park, where from the top lookout of Perkins Memorial Drive there are wondrous views of Bear Mountain and Harriman State Parks. For those who relish a leisurely pace why not take a route that includes both sides of the Hudson River and spend a night or two in the heart of fall fantasy? First take U.S. Highway 9 up to the Vanderbilt Mansion in Dutchess County. Then stop to stretch the legs and wander the gardens of the estate and take in the scenery. Afterwards head back down U.S. 9 and take US 44/55 West to the MidHudson Bridge, continuing on to Route 9W North through Highland. At the intersection of Route 299 make a left to New Paltz. The Mohonk Mountain House in New Paltz would be a magnificent place to spend the night and continue exploring the surrounding area the next day. For more information visit www.mohonk.com or call 845-2551000. Once refreshed, pick up the leaf peeping the following day in the areas surrounding New Paltz. Nearby Mohonk Preserve and Minnewaska State Park on Route 44/55 in New Paltz, offer spectacular views of the Shawangunk Mountains and Hudson Valley. The Hurds Family Farm, four miles outside of New Paltz on route 32, offers scenic hayrides through their apple orchards that lead to a corn maze. Each year the maze is

different. Susan Hurd says this year’s maze resembles an old-fashioned Pennsylvania Dutch style sampler, sporting an old apple tree with craggy branches and birds perched on them to add interest. There are plenty of outdoor activities to delight kids of all ages and guests can even sample apple varieties before picking. According to Hurd, the views from their harvestyour-own raspberry and heritage tomato plantations are fabulous! Visit www.hurdsfamilyfarm.com or call 845-8837825. Another river where fall foliage seekers can find seasonal scenic delight is along the Connecticut River. Long Islanders may drive through New York City and on into Connecticut, or take the Port Jefferson/Bridgeport ferry into Connecticut. The ferry ride offers fall color views surrounding the Long Island Sound. Visit www.bpjferry.com or call 631- 473-0286. In Connecticut, travel I-95 to exit 69 and merge onto Route 9. Then head north along the Connecticut River enjoying Mother Nature’s handiwork. A wonderful place to stop is Gillette Castle State Park, located on a perch above the Connecticut River. The castle modeled after medieval castles of the Rhineland by William Gillette, who had portrayed Sherlock Holmes on stage for more than 30 years, even has a sitting room designed to look like Sherlock Holmes’s fictional residence at 221B Baker Street in London. Surrounding the castle is 200 acres of gardens and forested paths to wander. To get there, take Exit 7, Route 82 East and follow it through Goodspeed Landing, watching for signs directing you to the park. Gillette Castle
State Park is open from 8 a.m. until sunset year-round. Selfguided castle tours are offered continuously from 10 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. daily from Memorial Day weekend until Columbus Day. Extend the fall foliage trek by spending the night in Connecticut. Unfortunately there is no lodging at Gillette Castle, but there are plenty of area lodging opportunities. The Saybrook Pointe Inn, with turn of the century luxurious rooms and water views of the Long Island Sound and Connecticut River, is about a twenty minute drive away from Gillette Castle in Old Saybrook. Visit www.saybrookpointinn.com or call 800-243-0212.

any individuals work hard to maintain their health; they watch their diets, take care of their skin and make exercise a routine part of their lives. They also work hard to maintain their hair – it’s vital to their appearance. Women invest in the best products to maintain their hair color and shine, and now there is something new for long or short hair that will produce silkier, shinier, healthier looking hair! This new treatment is called the Brazilian Blowout and it’s revolutionizing the hair care industry. This cutting edge product does not contain harsh chemicals and it is the only professional smoothing treatment that actually improves the health of the hair. Through a nutrient rich complex and proprietary polymer system, the treatment creates a protective protein layer around the hair shaft to eliminate frizz and smooth the cuticle. The result is smooth, healthy, conditioned hair with shine for up to 12 weeks. When treatment is complimented by aftercare products you will ensure longer lasting results. If you are seeking ways to improve your appearance and look younger, consider this treatment. There are no harsh chemicals, and the curliest, frizziest hair can be washed and dried with a lot less effort. It is also one of the few products on the market that allows you to swim without worry. About the author… Kathy Savage is the owner of Christopher Street Salon, a full service hair and skin care salon in Commack. She has extensive experience in hair care and has been trained at Vidal Sassoon. For further information about Brazilian Blowouts and to learn if you are a candidate for this treatment, contact Christopher Street Salon at 631-499-1990.

PLAN REVIEWS. Rules of the Road Back to Basics
Jonathan P Bostwick
Over the years at Edward Jones, we’ve met more than a few investors looking for the secret to investment success. The simplest response we can give is this: If there is such a secret, it’s been very well kept. In truth, there are two keys to successful investing, and neither is much of a secret. They are patience and discipline.

A Common-Sense Guide to Investing Most individual investors make their money over time, not overnight. While their strategies may differ based on their personal needs, the successful investors we’ve known seem to follow the same set of guidelines. At Edward Jones, we call these guidelines “The Rules of the Road.” As is often true in life, the rules are simple, but not always easy to follow. We hope they will be helpful to you as you consider your own investment decisions. Rule #1
Develop a Strategy
Rule #2
Stick with Quality
Rule #3
Diversify
Rule #4
Invest for the Long Term
Rule #5
Address Mistakes Quickly
Rule #6
Understand Risk, and Take Steps to Help Reduce It
Rule #7
It’s Not Just What You Make, It’s What You Keep
Rule #8
Quality Stocks Have Historically Outperformed Quality Bonds
Rule #9
Focus on What You Can Control
Rule #10
Review Your Strategy Annually
When you’re traveling, false starts and wrong turns can cost you precious time. When you’re investing, they’ll cost you a great deal more than that. This article was provided by Edward Jones. Hearing Loss Prevention NIHL
(Noise-Induced Hearing Loss) can be caused by a one-time exposure to loud sound as well as by repeated exposure to sounds at various loudness levels over an extended period of time. Since prevention is so critical, make sure that your family (especially children), friends, and colleagues are aware of the hazards of noise. Remember: one-third of hearing loss is preventable with proper hearing protection.
What You Can Do to Protect Your Hearing
If you work in an at-risk occupation, check with your
employer to make sure you have adequately protected your hearing according to OSHA regulations.
Limit exposure time to noisy activities. At home, turn down the volume on the television, radio,
stereos and walkmans.
Reduce the number of noisy appliances running at the same time in your personal environment.
Avoid medications that can be dangerous to your hearing. Be sure to ask your physician about possible effects on your hearing.
Know which noises can cause damage and wear ear plugs when you are involved in a loud activity.

Alzheimer’s Disease Darlene Jyringi, M.P.S. Mark Sedler, M.D.
A
lzheimer's disease is a degenerative disease of the brain which typically begins in later life. It causes a common form of dementia which results in problems with thought, memory, and judgment; changes in personality and behavior; and loss of function. Alzheimerʼs Disease is an insidious disease that is imperceptible at first. As problems with short term memory become more severe, however, others begin to notice, although the person with Alzheimerʼs may or may not speak about it. As the disease progresses, it interferes more and more with the personʼs ability to perform the tasks of everyday life. Invariably, the symptoms of Alzheimer’s Disease affect the lives of others. Often, a spouse is the first to notice the subtle changes, and the first to compensate for them. A wife, noticing that her husband becomes confused when paying the bills, begins to pay them herself. A husband starts to do the shopping when his wife no longer seems interested. The adult children of parents with Alzheimer’s Disease typically find themselves drawn in as well. Their involve-ment grows as the disease progresses, especially when more serious lapses of memory expose a parent to increasing dangers. Adult children are often 30 | Summer ‘10 | generations
required to deal with the thorny issues of control of finances or taking away the car keys. In many cases, a crisis requires the next generation to take complete responsibility for the care of a parent with Alzheimer’s. A serious illness or death of the parent without Alzheimer’s often leaves the care of the parent with Alzheimer’s in the hands of adult sons or daughters who are busy with their own lives. Alzheimer’s Disease affects approx-imately 52,000 Long Islanders - 13% of people 65 and older. Most people with Alzheimer’s Disease begin to display symptoms after age 65, but it can affect younger people as well. More women than men have Alzheimer’s Disease, but this is because women tend to live longer. African-Americans are twice as likely and Hispanics about one and a half times more likely to develop Alzheimer's than whites. Despite the progress that has been made in our understanding of the brain, the causes of Alzheimer’s Disease are not yet fully understood. And while medications and other forms of therapy can moderate the toll the disease takes on the lives of its victims, Alzheimer’s Disease is currently incurable and is often terminal. It is the seventh-leading cause of death in the United States.
It is important that Alzheimer’s Disease be identified and treated as early as possible. Starting treatment in the early stages of the illness can help preserve the ability to function for months or years, even though the underlying disease process cannot be stopped. Early diagnosis also provides more time to plan for long-term needs, resolve legal and financial issues, and establish networks of support. Dr. Mark Sedler is Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry at Stony Brook University Medical Center and Medical Director of the Alzheimer's Disease Assistance Center of Long Island; Darlene Jyringi is Program Director of the Alzheimer's Disease Assistance Center of Long Island.
The Ten Warning Signs of Alzheimer’s Disease Memory loss that disrupts the activities of daily life Memory loss is the most common sign of Alzheimer's, especially if it involves information that was recently acquired. Signs of memory loss include forgetting important dates, asking for the same information over and over, and an increasing reliance on memory aids. Problems with planning and problem solving Changes in the ability to follow a plan or solve a puzzle may be warning signs of Alzheimer’s Disease. People with Alzheimer’s Disease often have difficulty concentrating. Difficulty completing familiar tasks People with Alzheimer's may find it difficult to perform daily tasks. They may have trouble driving to a familiar location, following a recipe, or managing a budget. Confusion about time or place People with Alzheimer's may become disoriented, forgetting where they are or how they got there. Trouble understanding visual images and spacial
Help with Alzheimer’s Disease There are many resources on Long Island for people with Alzheimer’s Disease and their families. One is the Alzheimer’s Disease Assistance Center of Long Island, a program of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science at Stony Brook University. The Center provides expert assistance to the families of people with Alzheimer’s Disease and assists primary care physicians with the diagnosis and care of patients. The Center helps bring the latest research findings and the most effective treatments to Long Island. The Center’s weekly support groups for families, held concurrently with a separate group for people with Alzheimer’s Disease, provide opportunities to share experiences, information and advice. Other resources include the Long Island Alzheimer’s Foundation at www.liaf.org and the The Long Island Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association at alz.org/longisland. relationships Problems with visual perception, not associated with changes in eyesight, may be a sign of Alzheimer's. People with Alzheimer’s Disease may develop problems reading or judging distances.
New problems with words People with Alzheimer's may develop problems with words. They may stop in the middle of a conversation or repeat themselves. They may have a hard time finding the right word or call things by the wrong name. Misplacing things and losing the ability to retrace steps People with Alzheimer's disease may develop a tendency to lose things and have difficulty going back over their steps to find them again. Decreased or poor judgment Problems with judgment or decision-making may be a warning sign. People with Alzheimer’s Disease may mismanage their money or pay less attention to personal hygiene.
Withdrawal from work or social activities Withdrawing from hobbies, work projects, and social activities is a common warning sign of Alzheimer’s Disease.
Changes in mood or personality Changes in mood and personality, including confusion, suspicion, depression and anxiety may be an indication of Alzheimer’s Disease. Many of these signs can be easily confused with changes that occur in normal aging. Only a qualified professional can diagnose Alzheimer’s Disease after a thorough history and examination. www.generationsmagazine.com | 31

Fall Decorating Tips
S
eptember is back to school, back to work, back to routines, changing of the seasons and the perfect time to plan your decorating project. Save these tips for getting you started at any time, but know that fall is the most productive time to begin both long and short term projects. If you are considering renovations such as kitchen, bath or any construction, and you have not begun, don’t expect to be finished for this holiday season. Get started, but aim for spring completion so you can prepare appropriately. Whether you’re planning to “do it yourself” or hire professionals, make a realistic schedule for your project, and then add for contingencies. Make sure all contracted sources put in writing the expected time frame for completion or delivery. Start with a floor plan. Lay out the space and get professional help for this phase, if you need it. It could make all the difference in the end and save you money in costly mistakes. Establish realistic budget parameters and if it’s a big project, explore avenues for financing. Remember how much new kitchens and baths appreciate the value of your home as well as improve your lifestyle. If you clean up the clutter, throw out stuff and organize your space before you begin, you will have less to do when the project is completed. 34 | Summer ‘10 | generations
by Natalie Weinstein, Allied ASID
When decorating the living room, dining room, den and foyer, start with area rugs to help you define space, pattern, color and create a new look, even if you’re keeping “oldies but goodies.” When decorating bedrooms, start with the bedding (often sold with coordinating draperies) to establish wall and carpet color. Try to stay monochromatic on walls and floors should you decide to change from winter velvet to summer patchwork. When decorating rooms for kids, remember they grow and their room should grow with them. Make major purchases carefully and with an eye to tomorrow. Leave money for extras, upgrades and accessories. If you budget too close to your top limit, you may later regret not taking a worthwhile option. Don’t be an impulse shopper. Choose carefully since what’s “in” today may be “out” tomorrow. If you want to be a little funky, do it with accessories that can be easily changed if you grow tired of them. Enjoy the process of decorating. It can be fun, enriching and satisfying. You’ll be less stressed with a plan and you have the years ahead to recap the rewards of your efforts.

Plant Your
Design Planning
othing signals the beginning of spring like the first appearance of color popping out of a barren landscape. Spring flowering bulbs offer a reliable colorful display just when you need it most and they require very little effort. A little planning and planting this fall will reward you with a vibrant spring garden for years to come.
Place shorter bulbs in the front of beds and borders. Layer bulbs for a spectacular show. Put large bulbs like daffodils and tulips on the bottom of the hole, add soil, then put in a smaller bulb like crocus or grape hyacinth, add more soil, careful to keep each bulb at its proper depth. Plant bulbs in groups of 3 or 5 for maximum impact. Using a triangle as your guide, plant a bulb at each tip of the “triangle”. This will give you the illusion of more flowers once they begin to bloom. For a natural look, you can simply toss the bulbs around the area and plant them where they land.
Planting
Spring care
Plant in early autumn for best root development and best results. Choose a planting location that has good drainage and full sun. If drainage is poor, add compost. Dig holes the appropriate depth for your bulb type. A depth of two to three times the width of the bulb is a good rule of thumb. Place large bulbs 3 to 6 inches apart and leave 1 to 2 inches between small bulbs. Determine the pointed end of the bulb (the stem) and position it in the hole facing up. Backfill holes with soil. Water thoroughly.
When your bulbs have finished flowering, cut back the flower stalks but let the foliage dieback naturally. Resist the temptation to cut it back while still green. The bulb needs this time to photosynthesize and make food reserves to produce next year’s flowers. The safest time to divide or move your bulbs is when they enter their dormant period. This is usually just after the foliage completely dies back. Dormancy is brief, so don’t put this task off.

C
an you make a mental picture of a truly healthy senior living in a home that enhances his health? Is it possible to transform anyone’s home into a Wellness Center? In addition to clean air, healthy water, and peaceful rest... picture a spare bedroom converted to an exercise center. The right equipment, the right exercise advisor, the right goals. Why is this so important to a healthy lifestyle that adds to length and quality of life? Johns Hopkins Medical Letter: “Health Over 50” reports that regular exercise can raise HDL cholesterol, control weight, reduce blood pressure and relieve stress. For many seniors with chronic conditions, staying independent begins with decreasing their risk of falling. Studies confirm that the risk can be reduced up to 60% by adding the following activities into your lifestyle.
Decrease your risk of Falling: Movement – the more we move the better we are able to move. Increase your steps per day – invest in a pedometer and add 100 steps per day. Give yourself a goal and work towards it. 10,000 steps a day may seem impossible but adding 100 steps at a time will get you there. Flexibility –we all need to allow our bodies to stretch. Remember to breathe throughout the stretches – the deeper you exhale the more you will relax your body into the stretch. Strength Training – placing a demand on the muscle. Strength training can be performed with resistance bands, hand weights, soup cans…anything that will add demand and challenge the muscle. Balance and coordination can be improved by strength training and by practice. There are many ways to add this into your lifestyle – try to lift one foot slightly while brushing your teeth-change feet, increase your time and progress to another activity on one foot. Feeling unsteady? Stand close to the wall for practice. Agility – ability to change direction; combination of balance, speed, strength and coordination. Movement, Flexibility, Strength, Balance, Agility....when taken together, can go a long way in improving our health. STRENGTH FOR LIFE is an exercise program for persons with cancer to enhance their recovery process.
