Osteoarthritis Osteoarthritis (OA) is characterized by degeneration of cartilage, the hard but slippery tissue that covers the ends of bones where they meet to form a joint.

Healthy cartilage allows bones to glide over one another and absorbs energy from the shock of physical movement. In OA, the surface layer of cartilage breaks down and wears away, allowing bones under the cartilage to rub together and cause pain, swelling and loss of movement of the joint. The joints most commonly affected are the knees, hips, and those in the hands and spine. The onset of OA is gradual and usually begins after the age of 40. Currently, there is no cure. Treatment to relieve symptoms is available and can include a combination of education, physical therapy, weight control and use of medications.

OA usually presents as joint pain and some movement limitations. In some it progresses quickly; however, in most, joint damage develops gradually over years. OA can be relatively mild and interfere little with day-to-day-life, but it can also cause significant pain and disability. Warning signs of OA include stiffness or swelling of the joint, a crunching sensation or the sound of bone rubbing on bone. Early diagnosis and

appropriate management helps one stay productive and improve function.

Exercise is one of the best treatments for OA. It can improve mood, decrease pain, increase flexibility, strengthen the heart and improve blood flow and maintain weight. Your doctor or physical therapist can help you develop a fitness routine that is right for you and provide guidelines for exercising when a joint is sore, if swelling is present, or if you should use pain-relieving drugs or ice after exercise. The CDC recommends at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity at least three days of the week. With women in mind, a Curves workout is low impact, aerobic, strength training and stretching in 30 minutes, an ideal way to incorporate exercise into your day.

Research suggests that maintaining a healthy weight reduces the risk of developing and decreases progression of OA. Many Americans are using nutritional supplements, such as glucosamine and chondroitin, in hopes of improving joint pain as well. * To date, the Exercise and Sports Nutrition Laboratory at Texas A&M University, led by Dr. Richard Kreider; Ph.D., FACSM, has conducted numerous studies examining the Curves program. hen Time Won't Heal All Wounds

P

eripheral Artery Disease, or PAD, is a common cause of leg pain or poorly healing leg wounds. It is frequently associated with other medical problems, including high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes and heart disease. It occurs in people with a family history of PAD or those who are current or previous cigarette smokers. PAD, also called arteriosclerosis, develops when the lower extremity arteries become narrowed by the accumulation of a fatty, hardened substance called plaque. The leg pain associated with PAD, called claudication, occurs after walking short or moderate distances. The pain may also be present at rest. Some people experience coolness, numbness, fatigue or discoloration in their legs. PAD may also cause non-healing ulcers and, in its more severe form, gangrene of the lower extremities.

Diagnosing PAD is straightforward. Vascular sonograms examine the leg arteries and accurately provide a road map of any narrowing. Many people can then be treated with lifestyle modifications, such as decreasing fatty food intake, cessation of smoking, and getting regular exercise.

Minimally invasive techniques are available to correct the blockages related to PAD. These procedures are performed through a small puncture in the groin, using local anesthesia. They include atherectomy (motorized plaque removal), balloon angioplasty and stent placement.

If you suffer from leg pain or fatigue, coolness, discoloration, or non-healing wounds you may have PAD. You should be evaluated by a vascular surgeon.

You may then be a candidate for a minimally invasive procedure performed right in the office under local anesthesia.

I

magine your life if you never made a New Year’s Resolution to lose weight again because you already live at your ideal weight. Now, don’t imagine. Make 2011 the year you “Live a Thin Life.”

To “Live a Thin Life,” first realize that your ideal weight is not your goal; your ideal weight is your destination. Your goals are what you are willing to do to get to your destination. It’s essential that you focus on the goals and not the destination.

Ten suggested goals…

1. It’s OK to be hungry. Hunger is not the enemy; over-stuffed is. Over-stuffed means over-eating. Get comfortable with feeling hungry; it’s your body telling you to eat. Continue to eat a balanced diet with the right amount of food for your body size.

2. Respect, praise and love your body at any weight, even today’s weight. You’ll take better care of your body when it is appreciated and not belittled.

3. When you find yourself asking, “What should I eat,” change it to, “Why do I want to eat?” If you are hungry, eat. By asking a different question, the answer changes, leading you to a new, more productive response.

4. You are neither on or off a diet, nor are you good or bad at eating. Make everything you eat a deliberate choice; every choice you make has either a benefit or consequence. Be willing to accept your choice, along with its result.

5. Exercise and drink water always. Both are crucial to weight loss, and vital to the aging process.

6. Forget motivation and willpower. They have very little to do with sustained weight loss or weight management.

Instead, empower yourself with the knowledge to make the necessary changes that strengthen and enable you to continue on.

7. Stop making sparks with your knife and fork.

Eat slowly while listening carefully to your breathing. When you begin to sigh or breathe heavier, your stomach is full but you don’t know it yet.

8. Begin to master both perseverance and patience.

A quick, rushed weight loss is equally unhealthy and short lived. Forget the gimmicks, fads and one-sizefits-all diets. When you effectively take the time to practice the skills needed to “Live a Thin Life,” you’ll be thin, and will never again have to diet to lose weight.

9. Stop telling others, “I would eat that, but I’m trying to lose weight.” Others may test you to see how serious you are and, knowingly or unknowingly, begin to sabotage you. Show them, don’t tell them. But always have someone special supporting you.

10. No more excuses. You either make excuses or you make it happen, but you can’t do both.

Reaching your ideal weight (your personal destination), followed by living there, is more complex than the “diet” itself. There is no end; it’s a constant daily process. Accept it. The only day that matters in your weight loss process is today, not yesterday or tomorrow, next Monday, next week, next year or next lifetime. It’s now!

No type or quantity of food is worth jeopardizing your health, well being and happiness. I’m in this process with you and loving it! We are worth the effort.

Earrings Your # 1 Accessory

f a woman could own just ONE jewelry item, it should be a pair of earrings. Earrings add vibrancy to your complexion and sparkle to your eyes! Earrings frame your face; without them you simply do not look “finished”.

While for the most part, ANY earrings will enhance a woman’s appearance, there are general guidelines as to the “perfect” earrings for each face shape, but if you fall in love with a specific pair of earrings and it doesn’t quite fit “the mold”, so what? If you feel pretty wearing them, then that gleam in your eye will override the general guideline any day!!

What should i know about the shape of my face and how to play up my features?

There are six basic face shapes: round, heart, oval, square, oblong and diamond.

You don’t want to over emphasize your facial shape, you want to complement it.

Diamond-shaped face – Narrow at the forehead and chin. Drop earrings with discs or clusters at the end of the drop will balance the face’s V-shape and draw the eye outward at the chin. Choose rounded designs in lieu of angular styles.

Heart-shaped face - Wide forehead, tiny chin. – Look for earrings that are wider on the bottom. Large studs, discs or circular earrings are a great choice because they draw the eye outward to emphasize your unique face shape. Chandelier and teardrops work well to broaden the chin and narrow the forehead.

Oblong face – Jawline, cheekbones and forehead are same width. Fan-shaped, square or triangular with point up, no lower than the chin, work well. Choose showy studs, or go for button or round style earrings to draw the eye up and add sparkle to your eyes.

Oval face - Width at cheekbones with chin slightly slimmer than forehead. Pretty much anything looks great on this face shape. Chandelier earrings are especially flattering since they will draw attention to the entire length of your face.

Round face – As wide as it is long. To elongate your features and draw the eye downward, choose drop or dangly earrings instead of round styles. Try long narrow earrings with a bit of a curve. Square, oblong or rectangles are also a good option.

Square face - Forehead and jaw are close to same width. Hoop earrings are a great choice. The round lines are flattering and soften your look. Disc shapes also work!

Long and dangling are good as long as they are not too thick. Marquise or oval shapes emphasize length instead of width.

Does my hair color matter when i choose earrings?

Yes it does….here are some guidelines.

Blonde: The blonde looks best in dark stones because they provide a more striking contrast than pastels. Black, marcasite, emeralds and sapphires are a good choice.

Redhead: Bright colors are great for the redhead.

Greens and blues are the most flattering. She can also wear amethysts but should avoid rubies, rust colors, brown, yellow, salmon or pink. The subtle pink hue of pearls is quite flattering.

Dark brunette: Looks best in greens, reds, pastels and golden colors. These shades provide enough contrast where deep blues and blacks do not. To wear dark stones you should surround them with lighter stones like crystals or diamonds.

Grey, silver or white: Forget all the rules about contrast. Dark stones such as rubies, sapphires or emeralds are terrific, but diamonds or clear crystals are impossible to beat. Black is also stunning for the woman with silver hair.

ome Staging is the process of preparing a house to sell. Staging enhances the finest qualities and selling features of a house thereby increasing its marketability. fter graduating Magna Cum Laude from Dowling College and receiving a Master’s Degree from Stony Brook University, Gail King taught for 35 years and presented her cooperative learning techniques in Albany, where she was inducted into the Academy of Teaching and Learning. She was awarded a SCOPE All Star Teacher Award for her teaching techniques which are currently used in high schools. As Ms. New York Senior America, Ms. King went on to win the national title of Ms. Senior America 2009-10.

She made over 400 appearances traveling across the country as a motivational speaker for breast cancer awareness and as a baby boomer celebrating the positive aspects of ageism. For her work locally, statewide and nationally, she has received 17 government proclamations. As a model and actress, she has appeared on many hit TV shows and movies. A 37 year breast cancer survivor, she has spoken at doctors’ symposiums across the country where she has led support groups at Stony Brook Medical Center, Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee and the Susan G. Koman for the Cure. Her belief that “Baby Boomers are the foundation of America and our most valuable asset” has inspired the younger generation in building a better society.

What is your definition of reinvention?

Reinvention to me is the peeling away of my outermost layers to reveal who I really am. It’s about discovery and becoming the best I can be for myself and for others. It’s achieving what we want by feeling passionately about our choices.

At what point did you find it necessary to reinvent yourself?

After retiring from a happy and fulfilling career teaching high school English, I soon found myself asking “Now What?” A consummate multitasker, I volunteered in two emergency hospital rooms while thinking about the next stage of my life. I came across an advertisement for a pageant for women 60 and over. My life, unknown to me, was about to change!

How did you do it?

When I called the director, I had no idea that 30% of the title was based on talent. I apologetically explained that I was a ballet dancer when I was 14. “Fine,” she exclaimed, “you are a dancer and I will see you at the preliminaries.”

After two uncomfortable, sleepless nights, I decided that an adventure was just what I needed. I left my comfort zone, registered with a dance studio and found myself in a dance class with six fifteen year olds who rolled their eyes when I came in. I rose to the occasion. Bring it on, I thought. I practiced about two hours a day. By stepping outside the box and taking a chance, I had so much fun and even redefined my body. My lyrical ballet is now being used as an inspirational program for abused women in Florida.

When I was crowned the winner of the New York title, I didn’t even hear my name because I was too busy socializing on stage making new friends. With a new found confidence I went on to make hundreds of appearances across the country. Six months later, I went on to win the national title of Ms. Senior America at Harrah’s Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey. We were judged not only by our talent but also in interviews, modeling and our philosophy of life during a two day period. I refused to let fear of the unknown stop me and even used visualization techniques to see myself as the winner. Staying positive and also expressing my gratitude helped.

What did you learn about yourself and how has it benefitted you?

I learned that there is nothing I can’t do as long as I believe in myself. A few years ago I was grading high school compositions and after retirement, I stood next to Angelina Jolie in the movie Salt, sat behind Alec Baldwin in Tao’s on the TV program 30 Rock and came down a stairway walking past Henry Winkler on the TV series Royal Pains. And, I was paid for this!

I performed a solo ballet before thousands at Harrah’s Casino in Atlantic City after not having danced in 45 years and received 17 proclamations this year trying to help make my community a better place even though my weakest class in college was Government 101. I learned to do this by not waiting for an opportunity but by creating the opportunity which came from my previous experiences. I took all the skills I used before retirement and honed them with classes, experience and research. I taught speech in a local high school and am now a professional speaker. I taught creative writing on the high school and college level and have now become a published author. What started as volunteer modeling has now become a new income for me. Who knows what’s next?

What is your philosophy and how does it inspire others?

By sharing my philosophy across the country as Ms. Senior America 2009-10, I have tried to inspire others. My philosophy, like most things in my life, is simple: never give up, no matter what. Keep a positive attitude; maintain a balance spiritually, physically and emotionally and there is nothing you can’t do. As a motivational speaker on national television, radio and at cancer support groups across America, I have inspired others, helping them to gain control over their lives during and after treatment. This process helps one to rediscover a sense of self and to reevaluate what is really important. Remember: there is no room for complacency when you are reinventing yourself.

Where do you see yourself next?

I see myself in the years to come writing a book about literacy in the classroom and developing a program with seniors and students in my community, or will I be hosting my own television show? Perhaps I will.

What advice would you give other boomers who have recently retired for reinvention?

My advice to other baby boomers is to value yourself.

Don’t underestimate the skills you had before you retired.

You know more than you think which can be developed into a new career if you want it. Keep going; don’t stop. You never know where it will lead. Stay flexible and don’t be afraid to start something new. You have nothing to lose and at the very least, you can have something to share with your friends. Involve your friends so you can move forward together with endless possibilities. Most people do better when involved with others. Set realistic goals and above all else, enjoy the challenge of living your dreams. That’s what life is all about. If not now, then when?

Sometimes things happen to keep you from sticking to a regular walking program. Don’t be too hard on yourself when this happens. You don’t have to let a few days off sabotage your plan to reach a higher level of fitness and improved health. Follow these tips to get back in the game: V Think positively. Don’t let negative self-talk, such as “I’m a failure,” get in the way of starting again. Shrug it off as a temporary break in your walking program.

V Re-evaluate your goals. If your goal is to walk two hours a day 365 days a year, you might be setting yourself up to fail. Set realistic goals for yourself, such as 30 minutes five days a week.

V Get going. Build walking into your schedule today.

Just do it. Walk for 10 minutes on your lunch break.

V Continually plan. If you’re taking a trip or working overtime, think of strategies for incorporating short walks into your day to keep your plan on track.

You’ll be glad you started Even though the first steps of any journey can be the most difficult, it helps to keep your goals foremost in your mind.

So remember, once you take that first step, you’re on the way to an important destination — better health.

odern medicine has done wonderful things to improve the quality of our lives, yet horrible suffering results, when defective products or medications cause unintended consequences.

Reglan (metoclopramide) - is a prescription drug that came on the market in generic form in 1982 and is also sold in the U.S. under generic names such as, Pylomid, Primperan, Gastrosil, Maxeran, Metlazel, Dibertil, Maxolon, Metoclopramide, Primperan, Plasil and other names. Doctors prescribe the drug to treat a variety of gastro-intestinal maladies.

Despite studies showing that Reglan was associated with a neurological disorder, tardive dyskinesia, the drug's manufacturers did not warn of it on the label until 2004 and did not add the Black Box warning until February 2009.

Tardive dyskinesia causes uncontrollable, repetitive movements of the body. The symptoms are rarely reversible and there is no known treatment.

Infants, children, and the elderly, face significant risk of developing tardive dyskinesia. The risk is especially associated with those who have been on the drug for a long time, sometimes after a few dosages and even after the patient stopped taking the drug.

Fosamax is used to treat and prevent osteoporosis in post-menopausal women, steroid-induced osteoporosis in men and other bone diseases.

Investigation into Fosamax-related femur fractures determined that women and men who took the drug face significant risk of a spontaneous femur fracture injury. These atypical hip/thigh fractures occur in minor or "low impact" falls from a standing height or less, as opposed to a traumatic accident or injury.

Research studies indicate that femur fracture patients reported severe pain of the joints, muscles and/or bones for periods of weeks to months before a complete fracture occurred.

However, for those who qualify, there is an affordable option – the Assisted Living Program (ALP). It serves people who are eligible for nursing home placement in a setting that is less medically intensive and more cost effective. Typically, ALP candidates struggle at home with activities of daily living (ambulating, eating, bathing, dressing, transferring, maintaining hygiene, etc.). While these individuals would clearly benefit from help, they would be considered high functioning in a medicalmodel skilled care facility. By utilizing community based Medicaid and monthly Social Security or S.S.I. entitlements, participants are provided with: personal care, room, board, housekeeping, supervision, home health aides, various types of therapy, case management and other vital services. It should be noted that some medical issues exceed levels that the ALP can address such as a need for continual nursing care. Additionally, ALP residents cannot be chronically bedfast, chairfast, or impaired to the degree that they endanger the safety of other residents.

To determine eligibility requirements, medically and financially, contact the Department of Social Services.

Also, request a list of approved assisted living facilities offering the Medicaid funded ALP. Currently, there are four on Long Island – two in Nassau County and two in Suffolk. Medicaid recipients must have their ALP services approved in advance by the local Department of Social Services. It is also possible to private pay for the ALP and transition onto Medicaid after meeting the necessary criteria. Information is available from the Department of Health website: www.health.state.ny.us. (Search Consumer Guide to Long Term Care). Empire State Association of Assisted Living (www.esaal.org) is another excellent resource for guidance.

Veterans and their spouses may also find it worthwhile to explore eligibility requirements for Aid and Attendance benefits. This higher level of pension payout can add significant monthly income if there is a demonstrated need for ongoing caregiver assistance. I

ndividuals with Diabetes Mellitus are at increased risk of Cardiovascular events in their lifetimes and 50% will incur a heart attack (MI) or a stroke (CVA).

They should therefore not only work diligently with their endocrinologist to improve glycemic control to a Hemoglobin A1C less than 6.5%, but should be evaluated regularly by their cardiologist.

As physicians, we were taught that patients present typically early morning with: crushing pain in the chest area, pain down the arm or in the jaw, nausea, shortness of breath, diffuse sweating and pallor. Diabetic patients often have complications of autonomic neuropathy whereby the typical intensity and pain of an MI is not appreciably felt by the diabetic patient. Female patients may not present with any of these typical symptoms. To illustrate this, I will paraphrase a nurse’s experience of her own heart attack.

The nurse was at home. She had experienced no undue stress or exertion. She felt as though she had indigestion. She then felt a tingling around her spine area, up into her neck area and then under her jaw.

As the pain grew in this area, she realized she may be having a heart attack. She quickly called 911, unlocked her door, lay down by the door. She doesn’t remember the paramedics coming in to take her to the hospital. Had she not been aware that women’s symptoms may present differently from men, the outcome may have been fatal.

If you feel something is not right, act on it. The only person who can rule out a heart attack is a doctor. This year, make resolutions to eat right, get exercise, and keep your appointments with your doctors....your life depends on it.

n today's complicated world it can be frustrating to figure out what is best regarding your image for a business meeting. You want to make a confident lasting first impression, not just a good impression. But how do you start to figure out what is appropriate for your market? I have listed a few simple rules to follow. Remember, competition is strong; you need to stand out from others and you want your style to match your ambitions.

Always remember to turn off your cell phone. This will show you respect your prospects/client's time.

Put your best foot forward. You do this by being confident and strong with your presentation skills and appearance.

Research the business before your presentation.

Their web site will tell you what is important to their existence and their mission statement. If possible visit the office building before hand, find out how their staff presents themselves and gain more power for your presentation.

Your attire should be sharp, clean, pressed and within your market guidelines. Nothing too crazy or bold. If you are in a casual arena, DO NOT wear jeans! However, if you are meeting with the CEO who usually wears a suit, you should also wear a suit.

If you are meeting with a prospective client outside of the office for a breakfast or lunch appointment, make sure your table manners are present. I cannot tell you how important table manners are for the Lasting Impression.

BBQ Pork for Sandwiches

Easy Slow Cooker Pot Roast

Prep Time: 15 Min

Prep Time: 20 Min

Cook Time: 4 Hrs 30 Min Recipe Yield 12 servings

Cook Time: 9 Hrs Recipe Yield 6 to 8 servings

Ingredients • 1 (14 ounce) can beef broth • 3 pounds boneless pork ribs • 1 (18 ounce) bottle barbeque sauce

Ingredients • 4 pounds chuck roast • salt and pepper to taste • 1 packet dry onion soup mix • 1 cup water • 3 carrots, chopped • 1 onion, chopped • 3 potatoes, peeled and cubed • 1 stalk celery, chopped

Directions • Pour can of beef broth into slow cooker, and add boneless pork ribs. Cook on High heat for 4 hours, or until meat shreds easily. Remove meat, and shred with two forks. It will seem that it’s not working right away, but it will.

• Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).

Transfer the shredded pork to a Dutch oven or iron skillet, and stir in barbeque sauce.

• Bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes, or until heated through.

Directions • Take the chuck roast and season with salt and pepper to taste. Brown on all sides in a large skillet over high heat.

• Place in the slow cooker and add the soup mix, water, carrots, onion, potatoes and celery.

• Cover and cook on low setting for 8 to 10 hours.

Slow Cooker Chicken Parisienne Prep Time: 10 Min Cook Time: 8 Hrs Recipe Yield 4 to 6 servings Ingredients • 6 skinless, boneless chicken breast halves • salt and pepper to taste • paprika to taste • 1/2 cup dry white wine • 1 (10.75 ounce) can condensed cream of mushroom soup • 1 (4.5 ounce) can sliced mushrooms, drained • 1 cup sour cream • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour 32 | Winter ‘11 | generations

Directions • Sprinkle chicken breasts lightly with salt, pepper, and paprika to taste. Place in slow cooker.

• In a mixing bowl, combine the wine, condensed soup, and mushrooms. In another bowl, mix together sour cream and flour. Stir sour cream mixture into the mushrooms and wine. Pour over chicken in slow cooker.

Sprinkle with additional paprika, if desired.

• Cover, and cook on Low for 6 to 8 hours.

What should I do Maureen? Should I give my boyfriend one more chance to see if he will “step up to the plate?” Should I just continue to talk with my ex and see if things get even better?

Should I go on one date to see how things go and then decide what to do? I really don’t want to cheat, but I think I deserve more.”

Dear Patty, Wow, this sure is a problem. It sounds like if you didn’t have your ex in the picture, you would be happy with your current boyfriend and cut him more slack than you are doing now. It also sounds like if your current boyfriend was more attentive, you wouldn’t even care about all the attention you are getting from your ex. Is that correct?

My advice is always and always will be not to cheat.

In this case, you have issues with your relationship that you think your ex will be able to fix for you. That might work for a short time, but it is not the answer. I suggest you talk to your boyfriend and tell him exactly what you told me. Especially if your friends are noticing that he isn’t the greatest boyfriend to you, you are probably right

Before you look for someone else or think about going backwards by dating your ex, I suggest you sit your boyfriend down and tell him the facts as you told me.

If he is not capable of giving you more, then you are probably more mature than he is and he isn’t the right guy for you. If you both decide that to be the truth, then, and only then, would I suggest giving your ex a date, and only because the reason why you broke up with him is different now and he has more time for a relationship.

People do not change, but it sounds like the situation that led to your break up has. In that case, it is okay to go backwards. Only under very rare circumstances do I ever advise going backwards. Best of luck to you with whatever decision you make. By the way, many women would love to have a problem like this; two men liking you and you have to pick which one you like better. I’m sure you’ll make the right decision.

Over twenty years ago, in alliance with a supportive community, Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk pulled together its scarce resources to build a home for a single mother in Riverhead. It did not end there.

First working out of a garage in Rocky Point before moving into a church office, the Habitat Suffolk founders began developing relationships with municipalities, corporations, churches, schools, private groups, and individuals to form the organization as it is known today. Over 140 houses have been constructed thanks to Long Islanders who contribute their time, talent, prayers, and resources to make it all happen. Over 530 people now live in safe and affordable homes that didn’t exist in 1988. Of those 530, 338 are children who now know the comfort and security of their very own bed in their very own house.

The homeowners’ monthly mortgage payments go into a revolving Fund for Humanity that is used to build more houses. Habitat is not a giveaway program. In addition to monthly mortgage payments, homeowners invest 300 hours of their own labor – sweat equity - into building their house and other Habitat homes, as their down payment on the house.

Each individual contribution, small or large, comes together to create a life changing event for some of our less fortunate neighbors. Become a partner today in building houses, hope, and community.

Habitat Suffolk’s goal is to build an average of 1215 houses annually, building for as long as needed to make sure every family in Suffolk County has a simple, decent and affordable place to live and call home.

Heart healthy tips for women

W

omen today are busier than ever. What with a constant whirl of errands and family obligations, not to mention holding down a job, it’s easy for women to forget about their health and perhaps miss even obvious signs that their heart might be at risk. Cardiovascular disease is the No. 1 killer of women in the United States, and with our increasingly sedentary lifestyles and poor eating habits, it’s more important than ever that women take note of the following tips for heart health.

Quit smoking. Even one or two cigarettes a day can dramatically increase the risk of heart attack, stroke or other serious conditions.

Control cholesterol. Total cholesterol should be less than 200 mg/dL. Triglycerides should be less than l50 mg/dL, LDL cholesterol (the “bad” cholesterol) should be under 130 mg/dL for most women. LDL should be less than 100 mg/dL for those with a high risk of cardiovascular disease.

Monitor your blood pressure. High blood pressure, which is defined as greater than 135/85 mm/Hg, increases the risk of heart attack, heart failure and stroke. If you have been diagnosed with high blood pressure, the goal is to lower your blood pressure to less Dr. Jason Freeman, than 135/85mm/Hg. Exercise. Just 30 minutes of brisk walking on most days of the week reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease and has been shown to reduce the risk of breast cancer too.

Watch your weight. Normal body mass index (BMI) ranges from 18.5 to 24.9 kgn/m2. A BMI higher than 27 is considered overweight, while a BMI higher than 30 indicates obesity.

Manage diabetes. People with diabetes – especially women – have a higher risk of cardiovascular disease because diabetes increases other risk factors, such as elevated cholesterol and blood pressure levels. Keeping diabetes under control is essential in reducing your risk.

Reduce stress. Some scientists have noted a relationship between coronary heart disease risk and stress in a person’s life that may affect the risk factors for heart disease and stroke. For example, people under stress may overeat, start smoking or smoke more than they otherwise would. Research has even shown that stress reaction in young adults predicts middleage blood pressure risk.

Know the symptoms of a heart attack. Seek immediate attention if you experience the following symptoms for longer than five minutes and they are not relieved by rest or medications: pain or discomfort in the center of the chest or other areas of the upper body, including the arms, back, neck, jaw or stomach. Other symptoms can include shortness of breath, breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea or light-headedness. Do not delay seeking treatment … call 911 immediately.
