FROM THE PRESIDENT The 2008-09 fiscal year was one of great challenge and great blessing for the Geneva College community. This annual report lists the facts and figures of the past year, but I would like to take a moment to share a few of the joys and challenges we have experienced as a campus community. When the undergraduate class of 2009 first arrived as freshmen, many of them had to cross the S-Bend of State Route 18 to get to class. But I promised these students that they would graduate from a campus transformed. Now, through God’s grace and your faithful generosity, both the fundraising and construction for Beyond the Bend have been completed. We began campaigning with a target of $7.5 million in 2005 and have raised more than the $8.6 million finally needed to complete the project. We now have a unified campus, a newly renovated football field, an attractive pedestrian plaza, and a stone-and-steel archway that provides a clear main entrance to the college.

In the fall of 2008, the college welcomed more than 450 new students to campus, a 10 percent increase in new student enrollment over fall 2007 and 20 percent over fall 2006. We rejoiced in this success, but we were also aware that the downward economy could take a toll on enrollment numbers for the following year. As we feared, we finished the fiscal year knowing that we would not hit our target enrollment of 450 new students for the fall of 2009. However, we have redoubled our efforts to reach out to students and increase opportunities for financial aid, and we look forward to a strong recovery for the 2010-11 academic year. The college and our students will feel the effects of the recession for some time to come, but we move forward with confidence knowing that God “is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us” (Ephesians 3:20). Financial Position


Support Geneva’s Mission All over the country, people and institutions are feeling the effects of the economic recession, and Geneva College is no exception. Many students and families are facing changes in their financial situation and must re-evaluate their future at Geneva College. The college itself is making budget cuts, but remains committed to making a high-quality Christ-centered education attainable for students. The college distributes over $9,000,000 in institutional grants and scholarships annually, and has allocated an additional $1,000,000 to financial aid this year. Christian education at Geneva College isn’t just career-shaping, it’s life-changing. But we can’t maintain our campus, our programs or student aid packages without your help. THE JOHN BLACK JOHNSTON SOCIETY The John Black Johnston Society honors those who have invested at least $500,000 in the promise of Geneva College. With extraordinary vision and faith, John Black Johnston, a Reformed Presbyterian pastor, founded Geneva College as Geneva Hall on April 20, 1848 in Northwood, Ohio. Geneva opened with two faculty and 42 students, with Johnston serving as the first President. To those named here, who have given of their time, talent and treasure at such bold levels, in the spirit that inspired John Black Johnston, we dedicate this tribute with gratitude as an example to all generations of Genevans to come.
