Outpatient Center
Spring 2021 | Professor Mabel Loh & Andrew Stone
Academic | Geneva Sinkula & Mason Brown
This studio’s ethos was grounded in thoughtfully designing spaces for populations that rely on others. Our partnership researched chemotherapy outpatient centers, interviewing caretakers, patients, doctors, and nurses. We focused not only on existing site history and landscape, but also rethinking doctor consultation rooms and treatment spaces. Ultimately, this project wrestled with the framework of time in relation to a building and a user’s life.

Reclaiming Ruins
Spring 2022 | Professor Daniel Scott
Academic | Design Excellence Nomination | Christina Houseman, Gregory Muggli, Geneva SinkulaThe urban fabric of Austin is an aggregation of countless separate ideal urban visions built over a couple centuries. This evolution – a constant procedure of cutting, hybridizing and rebuilding –defines and re-contextualizes a city’s character.
This project infills 907, 909, and 911 Congress Avenue, located one block from the Texas State Capitol in Austin. Left for demolition by disrepair, Reclaiming Ruins rises out of these two-story commercial buildings. Two of three parcels are landmarked, while all are apart of the Congress Avenue Historical District.
This mixed use project contains live/work studio environment with bridging connecting different creative fields between the two towers. The original structures serve as exhibition/gallery, bar and commercial corridor that connect the street level to the towers above.

Sound Lab
Spring 2021 | Professor Ryan Hier
Academic | Geneva Sinkula & Mason Brown
Sound Lab is a skill share music hall located in Benson, Nebraska. Divided into three distinct programs, the space defines merchandise, talent, and skill as potential by-products of a musician. There is a focus on balancing public and private spaces, while negotiating views of Benson’s commercial corridor. Several hinged and sliding elements expand spaces into the surrounding urban landscape.

Manual of Suburban Subversion
2019-2020 | Advisor Zac Porter
Research | Geneva Sinkula
The negative environmental impact of suburban sprawl has become a major research topic across several disciplines over the past two decades. Rather than echoing these arguments against future suburban development, our research focuses on the existing suburban landscape and its future adaptation. Our design proposals for big box stores offer a new perspective on sustainability as it relates to the suburban context. This project abstracts ten various paintings into big box stores. Spacial capabilities were revealed after altering the column grid and facade elements of each case study.
This project was done in partnership with architecture professor Zac Porter as an undergraduate research grant.

Valentine Housing
Fall 2020 | Professors Steven Hardy & Nate Bicak
Project Team: Patrick Pineda, Dom Paquet, Maggie Coolidge, Ari Osten and Sarah Janda.
Academic | Geneva Sinkula
Studio Next House/NU House partnered with the Mayor of Valentine, Nebraska, Kyle Arganbright, and developer, Jake Hoppe. We were challenged to develop a range of design approaches for Valentine’s housing shortage. This project evolved into creating an adaptable row home that can be used as a module for vacant sites within the city.

Half Lot House
Spring 2020 | Professor Marc Maxey
Academic | Geneva Sinkula
Exploiting the design standards and zoning requirements, this project situates itself on a half lot located in the Boston Edison Historic District within Detroit, Michigan.
After understanding the historic context of the neighborhood, I took to understanding the zoning and district codes for setbacks and design standards. The first image on the right demonstrates this through the use of balconies, porches, bay windows, and even roofs and chimneys that all can break setbacks. The second photo reveals how window style and placement were effected by the design guidelines as well. The last picture displays the final iteration of the project, including a sunken level that offers an additional apartment, a carriage house that can be for a car or work space, and finally the main house which is 9’ by 34’ in size due to the half-lot.

Exploration of Section
Spring 2019 | Professor Zac Porter
Academic | Geneva Sinkula
This is the first project where I began with a handmodeling charette. All pieces from the model were recycled laser cuts from the College of Architecture. After assembly, digital drawings were used to explore sectional qualities. Ultimately, this project can serve as a lesson to use not only models but also section drawings as space and experience generators.

Cosmetology School
Spring 2019 | Professor Zac Porter
Academic | Geneva Sinkula
Tasked to pick a trade school, this project encompasses a semester long study of plan and its implications. We began with iterations of plan abtractions. This was followed by several interviews, questionnaires and site visits to determine all that one would need to study in order to become a barber or hairstylist. Notable programs include a salon, exhibition space, cafeteria, dorms, lecture hall, science labs varying from chemistry to anatomy, and an extensive product supply room. I was challenged to understand the role of the teacher, student and visitor within the varying spaces, negotiating public and private conditions.
