Project 1: Self-expression through object
THE ARCHITECTURAL MASK: From Suface to Form
The objective of this project was to create a “mask” that is an interpretation of ourselves. I went with a floral pattern design idea, since flowers are sweet, and I’d like to think of myself as a sweet person. I used paper, because it is soft and resembles flower petals. Through, cutting, rolling, folding and slotting, I was able to create the mask as shown on the right. Below shows sketches of how my design evolved.
Project 2: Self-expression in an Architectural Space
THE ARCHITECTURAL SPACE: From Form to Space
“A Space to Hide & Peep” In our group of 3, we were to design a space for one to “hide and peep” at a site on our campus. we came up with 5 iterations of our design in the sketch models below.
Translation to 1:1
Combining into bigger groups of 12, selected designs were to be translated to the full 1:1 scale. Reconsiderations to the deisgn had to be made, including slightly simplifying it, and integrating the structure to the skin. Construction-wise, we had to figure out how to connect the wooden beams (through metal-plate joints, we decided) and how to make the cloth flat (through clear rubber wires). In the end, the structure maintained the trie triagular patern of it’s original design, as well as the interesting shadows intially intended.
Project 3: Space for the Self
The objective of this project was to design a private space for a specific imaginary or real-life client through modification or adding on to an existing wall. In groups of 12, we were asked to select a suitable site within the streets of Malacca town to which our individuals designs would be grafted upon.

BUILDING ANALYSIS
PROJECT 1A: MY HOME/MY ROOM
The task for this project was to study, identify and describe as many materials as possible in a chosen space in our home. This included materials used in the walls, flooring, windows and built-in furniturre. In this way, we found out the basics of materials used in the construction industry. The image on the left shows the outsome of the project: an A3 presentation board.
PROJECT 1B: EXPLORING AND EXPERIENCING LEARNING THROUGH DOCUMENTATION AND ANALYSIS OF MATERIALS IN EXISTING SPACES/BUILDINGS.
This project was similar to the previous, but a more in-depth study. This time, the study was for a bigger, public space. We had to list the properties of materials used, as well as identify the construction methods. We were further exposed to the materials commonly used in the local construction industry and to standard construction names and terminologies for materials. Through this study, we were made to understand the reasoning behind choices made by the designer when selecting or proposing a building material. It was a group project, with the final outcome in the form of a report. The images on the right show our chosen space for this project.
PROJECT 2: MATERIAL SPECIFICATION DEMONSTRATION OF KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING OF BUILDING MATERIALS APPLICATION AND PROPERTIES THROUGH MATERIALS SPECIFICATION OR PROPOSAL FOR FINAL STUDIO PROJECT
The aim of this project was to introduce the process materials selection/proposal process by designers during designing stages. We were made to understand how the buiding material selection can affect the aesthetic and structural values of our design. The image on the right show the A3 presentation board as the final outsome of this project.
