ARC 1125 - Architectural Design Studio 2
Project 2: Tea For Two In groups of 2, we were to design a structure for two to enjoy a cup of tea, our site being the Boh Tea Plantation in Cameron Highlands. We searched for inspiration from photos we took of the site and came up with a few concept models from the ideas we abstracted from the photos.

We also took the idea of broken fragments from our designated Indian tea culture of shattering the clay cup after drinking. The final design is that of branches pulling the clay fragments back into the ground, where the material originally came from.

Project 3: Tea Retreat Expanding from our previous project with the site being the same, our final individual project was to design a retreat for a tea enthusiast. It was important for us to design the retreat according to its context in order to make it unique to its landscape and activity. In order to do that, the class carried out a site analysis as a group.

ARC 1723 - Computer Applications 1
Project 1: Geometry and Shadow Puppetry Art In this first project, we were introduced to AutoCAD by having to reconstruct a rose window pattern and a shadow puppetry art pattern of our choice with AutoCAD. We learnt to recognize, execute and implement basic AutoCAD commands. By the end of this project, we were able to recognize and recall all the basic AutoCAD commands and conventions.

Project 2: Roof Plan, Floor Plan, Elevation Plan and Cross section This second project is an integrated project, where we have to convert our Design Studio 1 final project to CAD drawings. We were required to produce the basic orthographic drawing, i.e. a roof plan, floor plan, elevation and cross section for that project in AutoCAD. We learnt to recognize, execute and implement even more AutoCAD commands. Through this project, we acquired the basic and necessary skills in the application of AutoCAD in our the design process. By the end of this project, we were able to execute AutoCAD commands in solving 2D drafting & design problems.

Project 3: Isometric Drawing and Detail Drawing
In this third project, we were required to produce an isometric drawing and a detail drawing for one of four bungalows selected by our lecturer, using AutoCAD. Working in isometric mode, our AutoCAD skills were futher enhanced through this project. We were later required to “touch up our isometric drawing with Adobe Photoshop.

Project 1: Architecture Heritage Study
Individually, we were asked to select and study a historical building in a city with Western architectural influences, which is exemplified by Kuala Lumpur. From observations on site, we were able to identify architectural components that have been adapted in response to local contextual conditions. We showed our findings in a set of annotated sketches. We also came up with a report on a brief explanation of the building name, location, architecture style, architect, function, construction and material.
Project 2: Building Typology Study
For this project, we had to conduct a comparative study on architectural development of the East and West based on a specific building typology over a period of 200 years i.e. from the year 1800 to 2000. Our group of 11 chose Supreme Court buildings, with the Middlesex Guildhall in the UK as the main Western building to compare with the Supreme Court Building in Georgetown, Penang. We did an analysis highlighting the differences and similarities in terms of original ideas, style development and the contextual situation upon which the building was built. By the end of this project, we were able to differentiate the way in which many varied factors contribute to the development of form and ccompare how architects have used architectural language in various historical periods and places. We were also able to analyze the broad issues which inform the development of architecture between Industrial Revolution and post-World War 2.
ARC 1523 - Building Construction 1
Project 1: Documentation and Analysis For this project, we visited a few construction sites to document and analyse the construction processes common in the Kuala Lumpur region. In this way, we were exposed and introduced to various construction elements. Our understanding of principles of construction, sequence of construction activities, importance of basic detailing, construction joints and material application were also enhanced. We also had the opportunity to study the relationship between site and construction method. Upon completion of this project, we were able to define the application of building components in real life examples, infer the relationship between buildings and sites, explain complete constructional procedures of the various components of building with suitable design, an compare structural elements according to the materials used.

Project 2: Integrated Construction Solution This project involves construction detailing solution for our final Design Studio project. We were able to demonstrate our knowledge and understanding of construction, application from prior project through the manual construction of drawing and detail. By the end of this project, we were able to select suitable structural elements for our design project and design and apply a structural element for our design project.

ARC 1412 - Environmental Sustainable Design
Project 1: Environmental awareness In groups of 6, we were to pick an environmental issue an investigate the issue within the context of Malaysia. Our findings were expressed through a research poster as on the right. By the end of this project, we were able to recognize the effect of growth on the environment, and identify local climatic and environmental concerns; utilizing strategies which will encourage effective local sustainable design principles and building practices.

ARC 1412 - Environmental Sustainable Design
Project 2: Sustainable Architecture/Development –Demonstrating Understanding For this project, we were to explore some of the multitude of interpretations of 'sustainability'. In groups of 6, we were to select and visit a “green” building (one that has ben certified by a green label) and identify the green features of that building. We chose the 11 Mont Kiara Condominium in Kuala Lumpur, which has been certified by Singapore’s Greenmark and identified several green features as listed in the boards below. In this way, we were able to comprehend how different themes or institutions are using the terminology to support their particular needs or environmental aspirations.
By the end of this project, we were able to describe principles of energy conscious design, exemplify environmental strategies already adopted in the vernacular architectural language of Malaysia, exemplify and explain the concept of sustainability including environmental and ecological sustainability, and explain energy requirements in buildings and building materials
