Overall the summer of 2014 has been positive. General moisture across the West and Midwest is yielding a projected record corn crop and abundant grass and hay going into fall and winter. Feed prices are back in control. Cattlemen feel blessed with record calf prices never before seen. Only in the Northwest have fires caused extensive damage to range conditions. In general, optimism is foreseen in the cow/calf industry as the beef herd begins to rebuild.

The key to rebuilding the cow herd is determining how to accomplish the task when rebuilding costs are also at an all-time high. The choices must be carefully considered, and Genex is poised to help in that endeavor. First, it is certainly an honor to be appointed by the Genex board of directors to serve as the Chief Operating Officer for Genex. In this new role, I look forward to meeting with members throughout the United States as Genex continues to offer the outstanding genetics, superior service and innovative programs you have come to expect from your cooperative.

This innovative development would not have been possible without input from members and customers. As a cooperative, our focus and direction stems from delegates. We listen to the needs of farmers and ranchers, who make up the delegate body, and provide us with direction for the future.

The acquisition of MOFA Global earlier this year was another innovative move by your cooperative. MOFA Global has brought an entirely new world of opportunity to Genex and CRI. We believe this addition offers tremendous opportunities for our members and customers around the globe.

A World of Opportunity

During the past six months, efforts have been underway to integrate MOFA Global into CRI and explore the synergies that might exist between the three CRI subsidiaries - Genex, AgSource and MOFA Global. Even prior to the acquisition of MOFA Global, the Genex strategic plan had called for expanding research capabilities; now that endeavor has had a tremendous jump-start. MOFA Global’s International Center for Biotechnology has a staff of 13 scientists who are involved in a wide variety of research projects focused on improved reproductive technologies and associated services. Currently there are more than 50 research projects underway in various stages of development.

We expect several MOFA Global research projects will have direct application to Genex and will directly affect the quality of products and services we offer members and customers. The cooperation between Genex and MOFA Global allows a direct link between International Center for Biotechnology researchers, Genex production staff and CRI research staff to collaborate on projects and exchange information and data that moves projects forward quicker. The scientific research team possesses research capabilities in the following areas and more: • Genetics • Genomics • Bioinformatics • Experimental design • Statistical analyses • Market analytics • Diagnostic testing • Andrology • Embryology

Another advantage in our relationship with MOFA Global is the opportunity to take research that has produced results for one species and apply it to other species. The International Center for Biotechnology conducts research in multiple species (cattle, pigs, horses, sheep and dogs, among others). A great example of this is a new semen extender Genex is testing. It has been used for another species and could provide a great advantage to Genex in the way we process and market semen.

IN THE NEWS Genex Restructures Beef Leadership Willie Altenburg has assumed the role of Associate Vice President, Beef Genetics. He will be instrumental in leading the Genex beef program as it incorporates new technologies into beef sire evaluations and semen processing. Willie has many years of experience in the industry and provides a broad base of knowledge from across the industry.

Lorna Marshall has filled the role of Associate Vice President, Beef Sire Evaluation. Her strong genetic and business background will enable her to lead efforts to analyze and acquire the industry’s best beef genetics. Lorna’s combination of previous experience in bull acquisition and most recently in beef large herd marketing is unmatched in the industry.

Jeff Swenson has been promoted to Associate Vice President, U.S. Beef Marketing and Sales. With this promotion, Jeff leads the U.S. beef marketing and sales team in providing superior service to members and customers. Jeff began his career with Genex as a sales representative in 2009. Most recently Jeff held the position of Regional Marketing Manager in the West.

CRI Holds Latin American Collaborative Beef Conference

Individuals from Colombia, Honduras, Nicaragua, Brazil and the U.S. gathered in Campo Grande, Brazil for the CRI-organized Beef Congress of the Americas.

Through a U.S. Department of Agriculture emerging markets program grant, CRI assessed the beef industry in three developing Latin American countries and then held a collaborative conference to define future improvement opportunities. Over the past year, teams of individuals with diverse expertise in beef markets visited Colombia, Honduras and Nicaragua to assess the beef industry and identify industry stakeholders and influencers. Within the assessment phase, the teams visited slaughter facilities, feedlots, beef retailers and beef ranches. In April, CRI led the Beef Congress of the Americas collaborative conference in Campo Grande, Brazil, to share assessment results. The conference brought together 48 6

people, including individuals from Colombia, Honduras, Nicaragua, Brazil and the U.S. The conference included discussion panels on cattle artificial insemination and genetics programs as well as presentations by the American Angus Association, JBS and the Brazilian Angus Association. Participants also toured Brazilian beef operations. “The final phase of the program,” explains Dean Gilge, CRI Associate Vice President of Global Development, “was to work with the representatives from Colombia, Honduras and Nicaragua in developing action plans for beef genetic improvement programs. Participants found this to be a valuable step in planning for the future of the beef industry within Latin America.”

Heikes Named Genex COO

This summer, CRI hosted beef tours for international customers, sales representatives and veterinarians from Argentina and Brazil.

“With the growth of CRI and the recent addition of the MOFA Global subsidiary, the Genex and CRI boards of directors voted to separate the Genex COO and CRI CEO responsibilities. Doug Wilson, who was Genex COO for 21 years and held the joint position for the past 12 years, will continue as CRI CEO. Keith Heikes will serve as the new Genex COO,” states Paul Greene, Genex President and dairy producer from Berlin, N.Y.

Traveling more than 2,200 miles, the 26 Argentina visitors viewed sires in the CRI beef lineup and many of their respective progeny, dams and siblings. The tour included educational presentations about CRI and the industry, along with visits to ranches.

“Year after year these groups are impressed with the quality of cattle they see and hospitality received at each stop,” stated Michael Sleeper, AVP International Marketing. “For many participants this is their first visit to the U.S., so we are happy to provide such an experience and valuable genetics that will be useful in their herds.” In addition to viewing CRI genetics and visiting U.S. ranches, the 39 Brazil participants visited the CRI World Headquarters where they listened to educational sessions on CRI and Angus genetics. “Providing the Brazilians the opportunity to visit the CRI World Headquarters and interact with Doug Wilson, Chief Executive Officer, was a crucial addition to the tour this year,” stated Sara Romenesko, International Business Specialist. “It was an optimal way for visitors to gain a better perspective of CRI and its mission.” These tours are key educational experiences for participants to gain a better scope of the entire beef industry. “CRI has the opportunity to leave a lasting impact and demonstrate the power U.S. genetics have in the global beef market,” concluded Brad Johnson, Beef Product Development Manager.

“Keith has extensive experience within the artificial insemination (A.I.) industry and within this cooperative. His experience, knowledge and dedication to the membership will assure the relevance, growth and influence of Genex in the future.” Keith has devoted 33 years to the bovine A.I. industry. After graduating from Kansas State University, he joined KABSU (Kansas Artificial Breeding Service Unit) where he held responsibilities in dairy sire acquisition, marketing and A.I. training. He then moved to Noba, Inc., in Tiffin, Ohio, where he served as General Manager and led the initiative for Noba to become a part of CRI. In 1996, Keith was named the CRI Vice President of International Programs and went on to create substantial international growth for the cooperative and develop valuable global relationships. In 2010, he became Genex Vice President of Dairy Genetics & Global Alliance Development before being named Genex Senior Vice President of Product Development and Marketing in 2013. Keith currently serves as chairman of the National Association of Animal Breeders board of directors and is a member of the Council on Dairy Cattle Breeding and the USDA Emerging Markets Program advisory committee. ©2014 CRI

IN THE NEWS Dates Set for Delegate Meetings

2015 CRI Annual Meeting to Be Held January 27-28

Genex producer members elected as delegates and alternates for 2014 are encouraged and expected to attend the Genex fall meetings. Input gained from these meetings is important and highly valued by the board of directors and staff. Each meeting will begin at 10 a.m. and conclude by 2:30 p.m. More information will be mailed at a later date. The dates and locations for the meetings are: • October 14 – Harrisburg, Pennsylvania • October 15 – Syracuse, New York • October 16 – Albany, New York • October 21 – Las Vegas, Nevada • October 22 – Kansas City, Missouri • November 4 – Alexandria, Minnesota • November 5 – Rochester, Minnesota • November 10 – Appleton, Wisconsin • November 11 – Atlanta, Georgia

Member Definition to Change After reviewing delegate and alternate input received at fall delegate meetings in 2011, the Genex board and CRI governance committee supported changing the Genex member definition for 2015. Their recommendation increases the amount of annual allocatable expenditures required to be a Genex member from $200 to $500 annually. All semen, products and services, with the exception of liquid nitrogen, count towards allocatable expenditures. The CRI board voted to change the Genex member definition as recommended. It goes into effect January 1, 2015. The Genex board also agreed on a member exception clause. If a member spends a minimum of $200 but does not meet the $500 minimum, they can remain a member by annually completing a member exception form. Once the form is completed and submitted to the cooperative, they have all member rights except they cannot serve on the board of directors. The member exception form is on the CRI website at www.crinet.com.

Members elected as delegates and alternates later this year have the opportunity to attend the annual meeting for Genex, AgSource and CRI in Bloomington, Minnesota, on January 27-28, 2015. The event includes breakout sessions on current industry issues as well as the business meetings and banquet. Delegate and alternate expenses to and from the meeting are paid by the cooperative.

Committee Conducts Membership Redistricting The Genex redistricting committee met July 9 at CRI Headquarters in Shawano, Wisconsin. Scott Erthum, of membership Region 12, was elected chairman. Doug Tate, Region 8, was elected secretary and presented the committee results to the Genex board of directors on July 30. The redistricting results will be on the agenda at the fall input meetings.

IN THE NEWS Pope Earns Genex Mission Award

Since he began his career in 2007, Ronny Pope, Territory Sales Manager, has been dedicated to the success of beef and dairy producers in eastern Nebraska. Each day, he steps onto members and customers’ operations where he has not only developed their cow herd, but friendships as well. “It’s rewarding to watch a member’s cow herd grow and develop into the direction you and the member had in mind,” Ronny commented. “Two or three years later, it’s exciting to see how the herd has blossomed based on the decisions we made together.”

Genex Alabama Custom Collection Update

Ronny works with a team of independent contractors to provide superior service to members and customers. This team represents familiarity on multiple breeds and have viewed progeny from many Genex sires. It’s this knowledge base which allows them to answer members’ questions more effectively and efficiently and as a result, maximize the genetic potential of each member’s cow herd. “I’m accepting this award on behalf of the independent contractors and 800 members in eastern Nebraska,” Ronny stated. “It is the independent contractors’ dedication to the members, and the members’ success that has earned this award.”

As part of the on-going evaluation of our business, management has spent time reviewing business units to ensure adequate margin is being generated and the business units fit into the cooperative’s long-term strategic plan. After extensive evaluation and review by the board, a decision was reached to cease our custom collection operation at Fort Payne, Alabama. As of May 31, we stopped semen production at the Fort Payne facility. Some equipment was moved to other production facilities, and Genex sires were relocated. The facility has been sold to John and Randa Stares with Tennessee River Music. They will operate the service of collecting, freezing, storing and shipping semen as Lookout Mountain Genetics. To best serve cattlemen of the region, Genex is working with John and Randa to make a smooth transition.

THE TEST OF TIME (AND PROGENY)

Genex members and customers worldwide continue to demand highly proven, breed-leading genetics, and we’ve stepped up to the plate to deliver. Since 2011, Genex has made a concerted effort to realign Quest, our beef progeny test program, to meet this demand. We continue to add more Quest progeny test herds and breed more cows, compiling fertility, performance and carcass data from calves sired by Genex young sires. Sires are used in multiple herds, both registered and commercial, throughout the U.S., in different environments, and under varying management. It is this scientifically sound, yet cowboy approved information that becomes the basis for our young bulls’ first EPD data. Furthermore, Genex sales representatives often tour these herds to get firsthand exposure to progeny of Genex young sires. Faced with a 10-year drought and a weak local market, Shane and Beth Temple needed a program that integrated with the hard work and dedication of their current operation. That’s when Shane read about Genex and Superior Livestock working together in the 2013 Beef Genetic Management Guide. He knew right away that was the marketing route they needed to take. Shane and Beth started T-Heart Ranch in 1995 with 30 head of commercial cows. They were looking for a way to evolve their herd towards seedstock production without risking a large investment and began employing artificial insemination (A.I.) the very next year. “We looked at it this way,” said Shane. “We could either risk buying one $50,000-$60,000 bull and not have him pass a PAP test, or we could spend half that much on labor

and breeding expenses and breed to an unlimited amount of proven sires.” In recent years they have expanded to include the L-Cross Ranch and today they run approximately 1400 pairs. T-Heart Ranch is located in south central Colorado, in the San Luis Valley, and they develop their bulls at 7,800 feet elevation. For them, not only is sound structure, good feet and a functional udder important, cattle cannot be susceptive to high mountain disease. Since December 2000, Shane and Beth have held their own production sales. They started with Balancer influenced bulls and heifers, and later moved towards Simmental. Like much of the country, their area was hit hard by drought. They knew selling bred heifers in a stagnant southern Colorado market wasn’t going to work. While scanning

through the Genex lineup, Shane read about the young relationship between Genex and Superior Livestock. “My only concern was if our current customers would accept our decision,” noted Shane. “With it being the first sale we wanted to make sure we covered all of our bases.” Later in June, while they were filming calves for the upcoming Superior Livestock sale, Shane and their area Superior Livestock representative, Justin Warren, went over the details. Justin explained how Genex wanted to give their customers a marketing route and Superior Livestock was looking for progressive genetics to offer on their sales. When asked how the Temple’s fit into this collaboration, Justin explained “Shane and Beth are aggressive when it comes to genetic improvement. They are building

females for the commercial operation and that’s who we are marketing to.” Last fall, Justin had calls about Temple’s consignments from producers in over seven states. The consignment consisted of nine pot-loads bred to 1AN01260 MA FINAL CHOICE 8036. “Choosing a sire to use was an easy decision for us. Genex does a good job of focusing on traits that are important to us,” stated Shane. “We bred to a sire we felt would work for us as a low PAP sire and would still satisfy our customers’ needs.” They sorted and sold potloads based on fetal sex and expected calving dates to fit customer needs. “Usually you see the lots carrying bull calves sell for a premium, but historically we’ve had more of a demand for heifer pregnancies,”

commented Shane. “We wanted to offer our customers a chance to buy half sister calves, so they can have uniform replacements.” In recent years, Temples have sold calves through Superior Livestock. Their calves have been contracted to backgrounders and stocker operations in six states. “The calves grow well and stay healthy. Buyers experience little to no health problems and come back year after year,” commented Justin. “It’s no surprise there is a demand for their heifers.” With the success the Temple’s have had selling both steer calves and bred heifers on Superior Livestock, they plan on breeding over 1800 head next spring. “We want to be able to offer more half siblings to buyers,” reported Shane.

“Consistency, quality and uniformity are what this industry is about.” Beth has been the ranch’s A.I. technician for the past 13 years. With the plans to expand, the Temples will utilize the Genex chute-side service next spring. Look for Temple’s consignments from T-Heart Ranch and L-Cross Ranch on the November 20 Genex Influenced Bred Heifer sale on Superior Livestock. This will consist of 500 Simmental‑influenced females A.I. bred to FINAL CHOICE for mid‑February calving. These heifers were cleaned up with sons and grandsons of Sinclair Mountain Pass. The consignment will be sorted into lots of fetal sex, calving dates and weights.

GENEX COMBINES COW SENSE AND SCIENCE Gina Byrd, Genex Summer Intern

The Genex Cow Sense and Science internship was aptly named – that is exactly what kind of experience I had this summer. From learning the science behind synchronizing estrous in cattle, to the cow sense needed to efficiently gather and sort a herd of pairs, I learned many valuable skills that are useful in the beef industry. My internship started in mid-May with a breeding project near Torrington, Wyoming. After some late nights, early mornings and inclement weather, I quickly learned helping on a breeding project is not for the faint of heart! I also spent a week in South Dakota with Darcy Warren, Genex Territory Sales Manager, and her parents, Duke and Marjean, and had the opportunity to help on several breeding projects. Throughout my internship, I assisted on projects varying in size from one cow to 1500 head. During the projects, I learned to load guns, heat detect, as well as breed a lot of heifers and fine-tune my artificial insemination skills. It really broadened my perspective to work with so many different people, and to see many different operations and methods of managing cattle.

The second half of my internship was spent on Double M Ranch in Oregon. Working under Clint Sexson, who helps manage the ranch, I had the opportunity to enhance my “cow sense” by gathering and moving cattle, sorting calves for weaning, riding through pairs to check calves, doctoring sick cattle and helping process feedlot cattle. After growing up on a ranch, it was really interesting to see the similarities and differences in management strategies that work for different people’s operations. The skills I learned in this internship will be valuable to me in whatever sector of the beef industry I decide to choose. I have gained knowledge in breeding and genetics, general management and grazing, identifying sick cattle and helping keep feedlot cattle healthy. I have learned to be more detailoriented and adaptable to different situations and events that come my way. The Cow Sense and Science internship was a fantastic experience; I would recommend an internship with Genex to anyone interested in beef genetics and learning general cattle management skills.
