The Full Story Behind W/C Wide Track 694Y By Jackie Atkins, ASA and Lindsay Johnson, Genex
This spring, a high-impact Simmental bull, W/C Wide Track 694Y, was erroneously named a carrier of Contractural Arachnodactyly (CA), also known as fawn calf syndrome. After further investigation, it became clear that Wide Track was in fact free of the defect. What happened to lead to such a monumental mistake? Here is the full story from American Simmental Association (ASA), Genex Cooperative, Inc. and the Werning family. As part of an effort to screen the most-used bulls in the ASA registry, the ASA in collaboration with Genex, Accelerated Genetics, Select Sires and Allied Genetic Resources, sent in samples on all SimGenetic bulls available through these companies for extended genetic condition testing. On April 16, 2015, the ASA received results on 249 sires tested for the following conditions:
• • • • • • • • • •
AM = Arthrogryposis Multiplex, a.k.a. Curly calf (Angus) DL = Dilutor (Hereford) IE = Idiopathic Epilepsy (Hereford) NH = Neuropathic Hydrocephalus, a.k.a. water head (Angus) OS = Osteopetrosis, a.k.a. Marble bone disease (Red Angus) PHA = Pulmonary Hypoplasia with Anasarca (Shorthorn and Dexter) TH = Tibial Hemimelia (Shorthorn) HY = Hypotrichosis (Hereford) CA = Contractural Arachnodactyly, a.k.a. Fawn calf (Angus) DD = Developmental Duplication (Angus)
One bull, W/C WIDE TRACK 694Y (ASA # 2588250), was reported a CA carrier. Dr. Jon Beever conducted further testing on the original sample (two additional tests) and concluded the sample was in fact a carrier of CA. Wide Track had an Angus cow, of unknown pedigree, four generations back in his pedigree making it unlikely, but feasible, that he carried the CA gene. As the dam and sire of Wide Track did not have DNA on file, the Wernings sent in samples for parent verification and CA testing to both Dr. Beever and GeneSeek. In the meantime, Genex pulled Wide Track from their lineup. Announcements were sent out from Genex (April 20) and ASA (April 26) to notify their members. “For those Genex members and customers who had purchased Wide Track semen within the past 24 months, Genex issued a credit for any semen that hadn’t been used,” states Willie Altenburg of Genex Beef Genetics.
Sign Up for A.I. School
“We don’t believe in using a carrier bull so didn’t see any value in keeping him around,” states Scott Werning, Werning Cattle Company. “We realized there was the potential for him to sire clean calves; however, we didn’t want to be known for propagating the defect. We knew putting him down was the right thing to do.” On May 6, Dr. Beever notified ASA and Genex that neither of Wide Track’s parents were carriers of CA. This is not possible unless 1) the original CA report was wrong or 2) the parentage was wrong. Dr. Beever isolated a new sample of DNA from Wide Track which tested free of Contractural Arachnodactyly. Dr. Beever then obtained a new straw of semen from Genex and tested that sample. Again, the sample came back CA-free. On May 8, Genex and the ASA announced that Wide Track was indeed CA-free and the original testing was an error. The reported parentage was confirmed with GeneSeek on May 15, 2015. “When we learned Wide Track was CA-free, many customers, who had received credit for Wide Track semen, used that credit to purchase more Wide Track semen,” states Altenburg. “That tells you how well our customers like the bull. Today, a limited amount of Wide Track semen is still available from Genex.” The obvious question is, “Why was the original sample positive?” The simple answer is we still don’t know. All the samples in the same order were retested twice and all came back free so there was not a simple swap. It is unclear how the original sample was contaminated; but, there is no doubt that Wide Track is free of these 10 genetic conditions.

During that same time, the Werning family pulled Wide Track from the herd and made the decision to have him put down.

EX T E N D I N G S E M E N for Optimal Pregnancies
By Michael Kaproth, Vice President-Labs & Production Technology, Genex
Historically Genex and its predecessor organizations have used a homogenized whole milk media as a semen extender. In some of our laboratories milk extender has been used for more than 50 years. Semen extended in milk does present challenges in evaluating the post-thaw viability of sperm cells. However the superior pregnancy results historically achieved with milk-extended semen outweigh the difficulties of post-thaw microscopic examination. “If we wanted our product to look the best under the microscope, we would use a different extender,” Glen Gilbert, Vice President of Production. “But we have chosen to use the extender that provides the most pregnancies.”
Evaluation Challenges for Untrained Eye
Under ideal conditions semen extended in milk is difficult to evaluate. Unlike most egg yolk based extenders, the optical clarity of milk extender is poor because of the fat droplets. Light passing through the sample is reflected and refracted making the observation of individual sperm difficult. The thickness of the sample being evaluated is critical in order to obtain repeatable results. If the sample is too thick, the optical distance from the top of the sample to the bottom (distance from the bottom of the cover slip to the top of the slide) will be too great and sperm will be impossible to visualize. At the same time, a sample that is too small will not have adequate depth, and sperm will appear immobile because they are stuck to the slide or cover slip. Each of these cases would lead the evaluator to conclude the number (percentage) of sperm moving in a straight line is very low.
Genex Quality Check
Each collection of Genex semen is evaluated after freezing to ensure it contains an adequate number of viable sperm cells to result in a high percentage of pregnancies. It goes without saying that semen is a perishable product whose quality can diminish after it is initially frozen and evaluated if it is not kept at temperatures below –130°C.

Field Research Reveals Optimal Choice
Genex research comparing semen extended in egg yolk media to milk shows that evaluators typically rate semen extended in egg yolk media higher than milk. In addition, sperm cells incubated in an egg yolk extension media for extended periods of time after thawing will almost always continue to exhibit motility long after the milk extended sperm have stopped movement. As a result one would expect egg yolk extended semen to achieve greater pregnancy rates. However, Genex field research based on hundreds of thousands of inseminations shows semen extended in milk achieves equal or superior results compared to semen extended in an egg yolk media.
Published Research on Conception Advantage
An article published on extenders points out a unique positive property of milk extender: it gets cows pregnant. The Journal of Theriogenology article, Comparison of two processing systems for bull semen with regards to post-thaw motility and nonreturn rates, authored by E. Kommisrud et al. (Volume 45, no. 8 June 1996: pp1515-1521) compared a skim milk extender with 5% egg yolk to a commercial all egg yolk tris extender for a total of 197 ejaculates from 45 sires and 41,445 inseminations. Although percent motility was not different between these two extenders, fertility did differ significantly. The extender comprising primarily milk with a small amount of egg yolk was superior to the extender with only egg yolk. Milk-extended semen received a 60-day nonreturn rate of 73.1%, while semen processed with the egg yolk tris extender achieved 71.9%. “At Genex, we are proud of the quality of semen we provide,” adds Gilbert. “Using milk media as a semen extender is one more way this cooperative helps members and customers achieve pregnancies on the farm or ranch.”

Angus $Values Updated to Reflect Today’s Market By: Lorna Marshall, AVP-Beef Sire Evaluation, Genex
The Angus $Values such as $Weaning and $Beef have seen increased use by commercial and seedstock producers since their introduction several years ago. Indexes are a valuable tool for producers to make genetic progress for multiple traits at a time. However, as market signals change so must the economic assumptions used to calculate the indexes. The American Angus Association utilizes a three-year rolling average to establish the economic values used in the indexes. For example, in the $Beef index, quality grade premiums are specified for Prime, CAB and Choice carcasses, and discounts are applied for Select and Standard. Yield grade premiums are incorporated for YG 1 and YG 2 (high-yielding carcasses), and discounts are employed for YG 4 and YG 5 (low red meat yields).
n Grid assumptions: Discounts for heavy weight carcasses will begin at 1000 pounds, which is up from the previous 950. It is important to note the EPDs and EPD averages for the breed have not changed. Because the indexes include updated economic values, bulls have re-ranked slightly for respective indexes. In addition, the averages and percentile rank for the indexes have shifted. Below is a percentile chart that illustrates how the $Values now rank. Percentile Breakdown – Current Sires $Values Top Pct $EN $W $B 1% 45.05 85.89 174.14 5% 22.50 73.64 154.64 10% 13.16 67.35 144.07 15% 7.82 63.14 135.95 20% 4.16 59.78 129.63 25% 1.26 57.01 124.36 50% -8.99 46.58 102.52 75% -18.38 35.76 79.80 95% -31.08 17.62 36.37
On July 10, the American Angus Association implemented new economic values moving the $Values significantly. The most significant adjustments to the assumptions were: n Weaned Calf Assumptions: Base Calf Price: $205 per cwt (updated from $180) n Feedlot assumptions: Fed Market Price: $140 per cwt. live (updated from $130)

Saskatchewan Helps Producers ADOPT Fixed-Time Artificial Insemination By: Travis Peardon, Regional Livestock Specialist, Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture
Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture Livestock Specialists Colby Elford and Travis Peardon, along with Dr. Colin Palmer of the Western College of Veterinary Medicine, have been working hard to demonstrate the benefits of fixed-time artificial insemination (FTAI). This has been possible through funding provided by the Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture under the Agriculture Demonstration of Practices and Technologies (ADOPT) program. The ADOPT program accelerates the transfer of knowledge to Saskatchewan producers through the use of demonstration projects, thereby allowing producers the opportunity to evaluate new practices and technologies under local conditions. Through funding provided by ADOPT, FTAI projects have been completed on twelve ranches involving almost 900 animals over three years. Completed projects have compared natural breeding to FTAI in both heifers and cows as well as evaluated the merits of using FTAI with double insemination in heifers. All projects have used progesterone implant protocols. The projects have been successful for the most part. Conception rates have varied from 40 percent to 81 percent, with an average of 60 percent. These projects have identified production practices that must be followed to achieve success. Elford, Peardon and Palmer believe agree a successful FTAI program starts the winter before breeding. Furthermore, animals must be grown to proper size, with good nutrition, to be successful in FTAI programs. Demonstration herds with subpar nutrition usually had corresponding subpar conception rates. In contrast, producers who provided balanced rations and had solid mineral programs were almost always successful with FTAI. In addition to good nutrition, attention to detail is very important. This includes written protocols outlining dates, time and injections needed. Any mix up in drugs or times are certain to result in poor conception. Handling facilities are also an areas requiring forwardthinking. With many producers calving later, several of the FTAI programs completed over the three years involved breeding animals in pasture. Adequate facilities, whether in the main yard or pasture, are important as they not only reduce stress on animals but also on those handling the animals. It was noted during the projects that animals were easier to manage handle the more times they went through handling facilities. Producers commented heifers were quieter than normal during calving; this was attributed to being handled several times during the FTAI protocols. Several of the producers who have taken part in the demonstration projects have continued on with the technology.

Ivan Carpenter of Hanley, Saskatchewan, was a co-operator in the first year of the program. He has since carried on with FTAI stating, “The genetics available are amazing. The biggest calves we wean every year are from A.I. It also cuts down on the number of walking bulls we need. This is important because good bulls aren’t cheap anymore.” J.P and Marlene Monvoisin of Gravelbourg, Saskatchewan, also continued using FTAI after being involved in the third year of the program. J.P commented, “From a financial perspective it’s a must. The calves out of our heifers are unbelievable.” Marlene added, “The first calf heifers wean calves on par with our mature cows. This is something we rarely saw before using A.I.” Not all producers initially carried on with FTAI after being involved with ADOPT. Russ Anderson of Rosetown, Saskatchewan, calved his first set of A.I. bred heifers this spring. Russ is a mixed farmer with no problem finding tasks to fill his days. He initially wasn’t convinced the time needed to complete a FTAI protocol was worth it but has since changed his opinion after watching the calves grow over the summer: “The A.I. sired calves are quite impressive. This is something I will have to make time for next year, especially when calves are worth so much.” FTAI is something new to most commercial producers in Saskatchewan. With more demonstration projects currently being planned, the hope is this practice will become common place. While it does create extra work during an already busy time of year, the benefits far outweigh the costs. For more information contact Colby Elford at 306-694-8953, Travis Peardon at 306-867 5504 or Dr. Colin Palmer at 306-966-7150. ©2015 CRI
