Seize the Opportunities Producers around the world have the opportunity to utilize many tools, including several new ones, to improve their herds and reproductive programs. In the August 2008 Horizons, we introduced ¼ cc straws with a 1.5 percent conception rate advantage. Now, this total fertility package is widely used and accepted by our customers. Back in August, the USDA AIPL released Sire Conception Rate (SCR), a new sire fertility evaluation. Regardless of the new name and formula enhancements, CRI still leads the industry in regards to sire fertility. Our dedication to giving you profitable, high fertility sires for improved conception rates is second to none.

Maximizing on Your Investment in CRI GenChoice™ By Ross Leix, Training Program Manager, CRI Many dairies are beginning to experience the advantages of sexed semen. Whether using sexed semen to expand their herd from within, create a market for heifers or expand the influence of their best heifers and young cows more quickly, producers are realizing the benefits and taking action. Today’s dairies having the most success using CRI GenChoice are those that pay extra attention to all of the little details. Sexed semen goes through a strenuous production process. The process of sorting the male and female sperm results in semen that is less fertile than conventional semen. However, it also provides a 90 percent chance of producing a heifer calf. It is the 90 percent chance of producing a heifer calf that makes CRI GenChoice so valuable. For best results, it is important to utilize CRI GenChoice on the most fertile animals, virgin heifers and young healthy cows in standing heat. Using CRI GenChoice on heifers and first service cows in good standing heat will ensure the most return on your investment. There are also a few other steps you can take to maximize your investment in CRI GenChoice. Before starting to use CRI GenChoice, take time to monitor the status of your current reproductive program. Do you feel you are achieving average to above average conception results? If not, sexed semen is not the product you want to use to get your reproductive program back on track. Take time to analyze your current program and identify changes that can help increase overall conception rates.

If your current conception rates are good and you are ready to start using CRI GenChoice, there are a few things to pay special attention to. The first is to spend more time heat detecting. Remember, the best CRI GenChoice results come from virgin heifers and healthy, young lactating cows that are bred after being observed in standing heat. Improving your heat detection is a great way to make sure you are getting the largest return for your investment when using CRI GenChoice. Let’s look at a few things you can do to help make sure your heat detection is more accurate.
Know the signs of heat!
Most cows and heifers will show behavioral changes beginning in the early stages of estrus and continuing throughout the entire period of heat. The primary sign of heat is when the animal stands and allows herself to be mounted by herdmates. However, there are many other indicators, called secondary signs of heat, which may help identify animals that should be observed closely. Some secondary signs of heat include: riding other cows, bellowing or bawling, displaying signs of nervousness, sniffing the vulva or urine of other animals, having a pink and swollen vulva with a clear mucous discharge, having a rough tailhead, chin rubbing, or they seem to be searching for something.
Take the time to accurately detect heat and only detect heat! The majority of mounts last six to eight seconds. This makes it difficult for casual observers, or observers doing other chores such as feeding, scraping alleys and moving cows, to observe
all mounts. Also, these casual observers are often not in a location to correctly identify the cow in heat. Misidentifying the cow in heat is just as bad as not seeing the heat in the first place. The individuals who are in charge of heat detection need to make the task their only priority when it comes time for heat detection. They should position themselves in “hot spots” in the pen. “Hot spots” are places where there is good footing so cows will gather to show mounting activity. The observer should be positioned in a place where the cow’s eartag or identification marker is easy to read. Heat detection should occur two to three times per day for at least 20 minutes.
Heat detect at the right time!
Research indicates more than 70 percent of the mounting activity takes place between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. Factors such as high temperature, humidity, wind and rain tend to inhibit the expression of heat during midday hours. The moral of the story is that out of the two to three times you heat detect each day, one should be in the late evening hours and one in the early morning hours. This will ensure heat detection is taking place at the times when cows are most likely to show signs of heat. While nothing replaces actually seeing and identifying the cow in heat there are a number of different heat detection aids that help with identifying heats. Ask your CRI distributor about the different heat detection aids and which one will work best for your situation. Another easy way to ensure the best results when using CRI
H ER D M A N A G E M E N T GenChoice is to review your semen handling techniques because sexed semen is fragile and requires extreme care when handling. Review the semen handling checklist included below to make sure you are doing everything you can to protect the straw and its contents.
4 Keep accurate inventory records so semen can be pulled quickly from the proper canister.
A few other tips to improve your success with CRI GenChoice include:
4 Remember to periodically check that the thermometer in your water bath is correct.
4 Keep the tank close to where you will be breeding to reduce time from the tank to the cow or heifer.
Heat detection and semen handling are a couple simple areas you can improve on in order to increase your conception rates with sexed and conventional semen. Take some time to review your technique to make certain you are maximizing on your investment in CRI GenChoice.
4 Make sure you keep straws stored in the bottom goblet of the cane. This ensures the straws remain submerged in the liquid nitrogen at a constant temperature.
4 Load insemination guns and work with the semen in a protective warm area to minimize cold shock and sun exposure.
Semen Handling Checklist 1. Store the Liquid Nitrogen (LN2) tank in a location that allows you to see clearly into the neck tube and is dust-free and dry.
11. Prepare removal of sheath through the resealable end of the sheath package. 12. Warm the gun prior to placing the insemination straw inside. (Fig. 2)
2. Measure LN2 weekly; level should not drop below 8 cm.
13. After the insemination straw is loaded into the insemination gun, make a clean, straight cut at a right angle to 3. Maintain an accurate semen inventory – and just below – the crimp. to lessen the risk of semen exposure. 4. Raise the canister just high enough to grasp the top of the cane with a tweezers – 12.5 cm from top of tank. (Fig. 1) 5. To maintain semen quality, do not allow the canister or cane to remain in the raised portion in the neck tube for more than 10 seconds. 6. Place the straw immediately in a warm water bath, at a temperature of 35° Celsius for a minimum of 45 seconds.
14. Wipe the cutting edge of the scissors with a paper towel, to prevent future straw contamination. 15. Place the sheath over the insemination gun, seat the straw in the sheath tip and secure it into place. (Fig. 3) 16. Prime the insemination gun by pushing the plunger until semen is moved to the end of the sheath. (Fig. 4)
9. To protect the thawed semen, place the insemination straw into a folded paper towel. 10. Dry the straw and check for proper sire identification before loading the gun. Note: Load only one gun at a time.
Fig. 2: Place the gun inside clothing or a paper towel to warm it before inserting the thawed semen straw.
17. Place the loaded insemination gun in a clean plastic glove and then inside your clothing to transport to the cow.
7. Semen should be placed into the cow as quickly as possible (within 15 minutes after it is removed from the tank). 8. The straw should be handled by the tweezers, not the fingers.

CRI GenChoice™ Producer Panel Producers around the United States, Canada and throughout the world are sharing their CRI GenChoice success stories. Each producer has their own reasons for choosing gender enhanced semen and wanting more heifer calves. Many have discovered how to effectively and economically include this value-added product into their reproductive programs. Find out more in the CRI GenChoice producer panel.
Greenwood Dairy Farm LLC
Canton, New York
Jon and Linda Greenwood began dairying in 1978 with 70 cows and no replacements. Today, the herd consists of 1,200 cows and 1,135 heifers. One of the earliest decisions made by the Greenwoods was to utilize artificial insemination (A.I.) 100 percent.
What protocols are followed and what are the results? Only virgin heifers are bred with CRI GenChoice. In the beginning, CRI GenChoice was used on heifers for the first service only, and then changed to include second services also. By the end of second services, 80 percent of all heifers are pregnant.
The top 10 percent of CRI sires were used. “Our future was in dairying” said Jon. “We wanted cows that milked well and were trouble free.”
Herdsman Steven McDonald does an excellent job of heat detection. Only heifers seen in standing heat are bred. The a.m./p.m. rule is followed. If heifers are standing in the morning, they are bred in the afternoon. If standing in the afternoon, they are bred the next morning.
Through internal growth, the herd outgrew the existing parlor, and in 1997 a new facility was built. Expansion required purchasing bred heifers. Linda reports, “We immediately saw a huge difference in production from our heifers than the ones purchased. There is just no comparison; breeding to proven sires is the way to go.”
Why do you use CRI GenChoice? The best genetics are in the heifers. Getting more heifer calves from our heifers ensures these genetics are passed on. The additional heifer calves CRI GenChoice provides will allow the potential for possible future expansion or allow us to market heifers. Who makes sire decisions? Sire Calving Ease is the first thing considered. Nothing above a 7% is used; a 5% or 6% is preferred. A list of top sires is organized and our local CRI representative makes the individual decisions.
CRI representatives Erik Locy and Eric Reed follow set protocols for semen handling. Heifers are locked up and marked before semen is drawn. Once semen is thawed, it is transported with a gun warmer and the heifer is inseminated as quickly as possible.
What are the results? Prior to using CRI GenChoice, heifer conception averaged 66 percent. After implementing CRI GenChoice, we saw a six to seven percent conception rate decline. These results made using CRI GenChoice profitable for the dairy. Currently our heifer calf ratio on heifers is 69 percent without using CRI GenChoice aggressively for the entire year. We have also seen a decline in the number of dead on arrivals (DOAs). Prior to CRI GenChoice, we averaged around 12 percent DOAs on heifers and are now at nine percent.
“The best genetics are in the heifers. Getting more heifer calves from our heifers ensures these genetics are passed on.”

CRI GENCHOICE
S. & M. Dairy Harbor Beach, Michigan
Steve Schulte farmed with his father while growing up. In 1972, he graduated from Harbor Beach Community High School, and married Marlene Lamke two years later. On December 17, 1974, Steve and his father lost their herd of cows to a contaminated feed problem. In 1976, his father purchased cows again. Seven years later, Steve and Marlene purchased the farming operation from Steve’s father, along with 40 cows. Today, Steve and Marlene have five children and eight grandchildren, several of whom are involved in the family operation. Their son, Bryan, is a partner in S. & M. Dairy and owns his own custom farming business. Their son, Paul, will be graduating college and joining the business in May 2009. And their daughter, Laura, is the bookkeeper. Together, they manage a herd of 1,000 cows.
Why do you use CRI GenChoice? We started using CRI GenChoice in May 2007 because we wanted to maintain and expand our herd from within. Through CRI GenChoice, we can continue to expand at a slow rate. Having the extra heifers allows us to do that. We also have a good herd and want to further improve it with good, proven sires. In addition, having more females allows us to cull our lower milk producers and problem cows to keep raising production levels. What protocols do you follow for breeding with CRI GenChoice? We use sexed semen on heifers for the first two services. The heifers have to be in a good standing heat. If they are not, we use conventional semen.
We use CRI GenChoice on cows too. The cows must be first lactation cows at least 60 days in milk. They should not have had calving difficulties, be free from post calving infections, possess good feet and legs, well shaped udders and good milk production. Our herdsman, Doug Koglin, and our CRI representative, Marvin Kramer, identify the cows that are in the best of health and meet all other criteria. They are really doing a fine job. We use CRI GenChoice for the first service only on first lactation cows. We try to breed them a few hours after standing heat.
Who chooses the sires? Our CRI representative, Marvin Kramer, chooses the sires for us. He looks for bulls that have good feet and legs along with positive udder traits and high milk production. What are the results? We try to breed all heifers with sexed semen and some of our first lactation cows. In the last six months, 56 percent of our heifers were confirmed pregnant with sexed semen. We just started breeding some of our cows five months ago, and so far have a 42 percent conception rate with CRI GenChoice. In all, we have 110 heifers on the ground from CRI GenChoice out of 115 pregnancies (96 percent heifer calves).
Describe the additional benefits of CRI GenChoice. We like the calving ease of heifer calves; we previously lost some of our springing heifers at calving due to bull calves being naturally larger than heifer calves. Our heifer mortality rate is now lower since we started using CRI GenChoice.
“we have 110 heifers on the ground from CRI GenChoice out of 115 pregnancies.”

Second Crop Daughters
Dias & Dias Toystory 160
Receiving Rave Reviews! “TOYSTORY is one of the best bulls I’ve ever used! I have 60 fresh TOYSTORY heifers and there isn’t a bad one. When you walk through my pen of two-year olds, you can see how great his consistency is. I’ve used many of the popular sires over the past 30 years and I haven’t seen any sire with such a consistent group of daughters. He’s as good as they get. You get a combination of both style and milk with TOYSTORY. He’s the full package!”
