Is it that Simple? Good Bulls+Good People=+17%! By: Willie Altenburg, A.V.P., Beef Marketing, Genex
2009 has the makings of a record beef year for Genex! Through June 2009, U.S. beef sales for Genex are up 17 percent over the previous year. Genex has seen a 5.4 percent increase in the National Association of Animal Breeders domestic marketshare through the first half of the year.
Steps to Increased Beef Sales
We feel the formula is simple. It takes good bulls, the kind the industry desires. Bulls which are chosen with real world cow sense and have a balanced EPD package, avoiding extremes. Bulls that are backed by productive cow families and structure bred to last. Good people provide “chute-side” service to our members and customers. Our sales force has grown with our program over the past year. There are more Genex beef sales representatives in the country than at any other time in history. These representatives provide insemination service, synchronization expertise and genetic advice. We hope you’ll agree. The Genex formula for success is good bulls + good people = a successful and growing beef program.

GeneSTAR MVPs: A new era in DNA-marker technology By: Jim Johnson, National Sales Manager, Pfizer Animal Genetics
MVPs are reported in units of the trait—similar to estimated progeny differences (EPDs)—and account for the simultaneous effect of all markers. When MVP results are reported, each animal will receive a value for each MVP accompanied by a reliability value and a breed ranking. This allows producers to identify top individuals in their herd and rank them among other breed leaders.
More information, selection opportunities
DNA-marker technology continues to evolve at breakneck speed, and the latest advance is a more reliable genetic test for beef producers who are looking to make more-informed management decisions. Earlier this year Pfizer Animal Genetics released GeneSTAR® Molecular Value Predictions (MVPs™), based on an expanded panel of 56 DNA markers. GeneSTAR MVPs identify traits for feed efficiency, marbling and tenderness, and improve the reliability and value of GeneSTAR as a decision-making tool. This new product is a result of Pfizer Animal Genetics’ significant investment in research, development and third-party validation of new genomic technologies in cattle. GeneSTAR MVP technology provides: • A measure of molecular breeding value expressed in units of the trait • Average MVP reliability values for the herd • A state-of-the-art molecular tool which, when combined with traditional genetic principles, can accelerate the rate of genetic improvement
Putting MVPs into practice
More markers and increased reliability make GeneSTAR MVPs powerful tools for all sectors of the beef production chain. To best report the information from the 56-marker panel in a usable manner, the previous GeneSTAR “star system” has been revised. The star system reported results based on the number of favorable alleles present for a particular trait. MVPs incorporate information from many more markers, which may not all have equal effects and can affect multiple traits simultaneously.

MVPs provide producers with the opportunity to know more about each animal in their herd for more-informed decision-making. A key advantage of using genomic technology is the ability to obtain genetic information on young animals for traits that are difficult or costly to measure, or that can only be collected much later in life.
More information to select elite donor females and herd sires translates to faster genetic progress and additional herd benefits from multiple avenues. From highly sought-after genetics in the sale ring to efficient animals in the feedlot to a more tender, consistent product on the consumer’s table, GeneSTAR MVPs provide the information herd owners need to meet their respective goals. The economic impact for each herd will be unique based on varying goals and market segments. Pfizer Animal Genetics is committed to helping producers make sense of and fully implement GeneSTAR MVP results derived through marker-assisted technologies. The opportunities available to producers through MVP information will allow them to make decisions regarding the grouping of animals and the selection of genetically superior animals to serve as parents for the next generation. Animals can be tested for MVPs by submitting DNA samples, which can come from hair with the root bulb intact, blood or semen. To learn more about testing your herd with GeneSTAR MVPs, proper sampling methods or to obtain a test kit, contact your Genex sales representative or visit www.pfizeranimalgenetics.com. n Genex has reached an agreement with Pfizer Animal Genetics to market the MVP testing. Contact your Genex sales representative for details.
Utilizing It has been a life-long dream for beef producers to predetermine the sex of a calf. At Genex, this dream has become a reality. The GenChoice™ sexed semen product line is currently available in GenChoice 90™, with the options of male or female-sorted semen. GenChoice 90 will achieve 90 percent of the desired sex ratio, which means approximately 90 percent of calves produced from GenChoice 90 will be the desired gender. Purebred and seedstock producers now have the ability to breed their best heifers using GenChoice 90 female-sorted semen. The ability to produce more heifers allows producers to apply more selection intensity on the female side of the pedigree. That translates to a higher percent of replacement animals coming from top-end, high genetic heifers. With genetic advancement coming from both the dam and the A.I. sire, GenChoice can make a significant impact on your bottom line. In addition, there is an added calving ease benefit to breeding your replacement heifers using GenChoice 90 female-sorted semen. Kenny Stauffer, of Hoot Owl Ranch, Harrisburg, Neb., wanted to use Final Answer on his commercial heifers in 2008 to produce replacement females. Not knowing much about the GenChoice product, he relied on the advice of his Genex Area Beef Representative, Royce McConnell. Stauffer used 50 straws of GenChoice female-sorted semen resulting in 34 heifer calves and two bull calves - a 72 percent conception rate.
“The results exceeded our expectations,” stated Stauffer. “During the spring 2009 breeding season we used GenChoice female semen on our virgin heifers with 10 of 18 pregnant to Final Answer. We also bred our cows to Objective 3J15.” Since GenChoice is available in male or female, producers will now have more bull prospects without expanding their herds or adding cooperator herds. In addition, producers have the option to choose sires which are specifically suited to produce more terminal qualities. The extra pounds and carcass yield will pay added benefits, offsetting the higher cost of GenChoice semen. Galen Fink of Fink Beef Genetics, Manhattan, Kan., is committed to building on predictability, quality, efficiency and added value to increase cattlemen’s profit and consumer beef demand. “We have a larger bull market than we do a female market. It is logical for us to utilize GenChoice male semen to try to produce more bulls for our commercial bull buyers. We are excited about using this product,” stated Fink. Genex realizes a one-size-fits-all approach won’t work for every herd. With your unique goals and objectives in mind, Genex offers you choices - male or female. In 2010 Genex will introduce another choice to beef producers, GenChoice 75™, a product that offers 75 percent of the desired sex ratio.
GenChoice “Best Use”
For best results, follow these guidelines when using GenChoice semen.
Ask your Genex representative how GenChoice can give you more choices.
• For single use artificial insemination (A.I.) on heifers with well-identified standing heats. • Do not use with timed A.I. synchronization or when flushing for embryo transfer. • GenChoice must be thawed using the warm water method. Thaw straws in a 95ºF water bath for a minimum of 45 seconds. • GenChoice should only be handled by experienced A.I. technicians. • GenChoice requires excellent semen handling techniques.
Proper Gun Loading Procedures are Important when Using ¼ cc Semen Straws By: Sarah Thorson, Training Programs Manager, CRI
If you have used semen from any of the Genex Scottish Angus bulls or GenChoice™ sexed semen, you have noticed it is packaged different than traditional Genex semen. This semen has been packaged in ¼ cc straws, versus the traditional ½ cc straw. The smaller straw size allows for this semen to be packaged 10 semen straws in the bottom goblet, with an empty top goblet, compared to the five straw in the top goblet, five straws in the bottom goblet that most of us are used to.
½ cc straws: cut the straw at a slight angle.
It is important to recognize gun loading procedures for ¼ cc straws are different and should be followed to achieve optimum performance from the ¼ cc straw package size. We have developed a set of protocols that should be used when loading the ¼ cc straw into either a universal artificial insemination (A.I.) gun or ¼ cc A.I. gun. The nice thing about using a universal A.I. gun versus ¼ cc straw gun, is adaptability for both ½ cc and ¼ cc straws. That way, even if you may have some semen ¼ cc straws: cut straight across the straw. packaged in ½ cc straws and some in ¼ cc straws you still only need one gun. Secure the cut end of the straw into the insert of the sheath. When removing the ¼ cc straw from the semen tank it a. For the All-2-Mate™ O-ring gun use the split sheath is important to always use tweezers. Tweezers designed with the green insert. specifically for ½ cc straws may not work effectively with b. For the All-2-Mate™ spiral gun and KombiColor use the ¼ cc straws; ask your local Genex representative about non-split sheath with blue insert. tweezers for ¼ cc straws.
5.
To Properly Load Universal or ¼ cc Guns:
1. 2.
3. 4.
Pull the plunger of the gun back six to seven inches. Place the straw directly into the barrel of the gun with the plugged end in the gun and the crimped end sticking out. Give the straw a quarter turn to ensure it is properly seated in the gun.
Use a clean scissors to cut through the air space below the crimped end of the straw. Keep in mind ½ cc and ¼ cc straws are cut differently. For ½ cc straws, cut at a slight angle. For ¼ cc straws, cut straight across.

6.
To secure the straw into the sheath, place the sheath over the gun and straw. Pinch lightly above the insert and apply pressure until you feel the straw lock into place inside the guide cup. Seating the straw into the insert assures the semen cannot run back into the sheath during deposition.
7.
Finally, secure the sheath onto the gun. a. To secure the sheath onto the spiral gun, pull the sheath down over the barrel of the gun until the end of the sheath touches the spirals on the gun and the insert is near the end of the sheath (Figure 1). Screw the sheath onto the spirals at the base of the gun until you meet resistance (Figure 2). The end of the insert should now be into the tip of the sheath (Figure 3).

b. To secure the sheath onto the O-ring gun, slide the sheath down the barrel of the gun and push the O-ring up (Figure 4). Slide the sheath beneath it and slide the O-ring down the barrel until it is held firmly in place over the top of the sheath (Figure 5). Then give the O-ring a slight twist to lock into place.
Figure 4

c. To secure the sheath on the KombiColor gun, simply slide the sheath down the barrel of the gun until the guide cup comes to the end of the sheath. There is a lip on the base of the KombiColor gun (shown in Figure 6) that holds the sheath in place (Figure 7).

Cooperative Resources International (CRI) hosted a beef tour for 50 international sales representatives and beef producers from Brazil and Argentina. The 12 day, five state tour gave the visitors the opportunity to better understand the United States beef industry. Michael Sleeper, CRI Associate Vice President of International Marketing, commented on the overall purpose of the beef tour. “It gave them a whole new outlook on the beef cattle genetics available from CRI and using bulls from outside of their own countries,” stated Sleeper. “We really set a strong basis for a sales relationship with these countries.” The tour included ranch and business visits as well as educational sessions regarding beef genetics and the services offered by CRI. Specific points of interest on the tour included numerous beef ranches, the American Angus Hall of Fame, the Dickinson Research Extension Center and two of the cooperative’s custom collection facilities - Genex Dakota Sire Service and Genex Hawkeye West - to see bulls currently in stud. The tours allowed the visitors to view progeny of CRI bulls and learn more about the different ways ranches operate.

Maximize Profitability By: Jena Swanson, TEAM Marketing and Administration Manager , Central Livestock
TEAM (the electronic auction market) continues to grow throughout the United States. TEAM is an interactive marketplace that brings cattle buyers and sellers together through the power of the Internet. With multiple sales weekly, TEAM allows producers to sell potload groups (42,000-50,000 pound live weight loads) of finished cattle, feeders, market cows and bulls, and bred females. TEAM is now marketing cattle in 17 states. Although TEAM is designed for large producers, TEAM has proved successful in all facets of the beef industry, including cow/calf, backgrounders and feedlots. Cow/calf producers can maximize the profitability of their feeder cattle and market cows. Bob Skinner, beef producer from Jordan Valley, Ore., states, “I am very happy selling my market cows on TEAM. I like the format and the way it is handled. I sold a potload of market cows the week prior to marketing on TEAM, which I delivered myself, and received $44/cwt live. The next week, the market prices were slipping downward and I sold a potload of market cows on TEAM. I received $48/cwt live and the buyer paid all of the transportation costs. I received several dollars more per head selling on TEAM. I am very pleased and will continue to market cattle with TEAM.” TEAM has also proved to be a great fit for small to midsize farmer feeders and backgrounders, especially in the Midwest. Several small feedlots (less than 200 head) have used TEAM to market finished cattle, and have found it to be a great alternative to traditional marketing methods. Jeff Lyons, who operates a feedlot near Lisbon, N.D., says, “TEAM is a great way to market cattle to buyers you never had access to before.”

Why Utilize TEAM?
Cattle marketed through TEAM go directly from seller to buyer. This method of marketing cattle ensures cattle are exposed to as little stress, sickness and shrinkage as possible. Most cattle marketed through TEAM are sold FOB (Freight on Buyer) the seller’s location, meaning no transportation costs for the seller – a prime example of how TEAM can lower marketing costs and increase the seller’s bottom line. Commissions are only taken when the cattle sell; there is no consignment fee and a flat commission is taken on finished, feeders and market cows and bulls. Because TEAM sales take place over the Internet, anyone with Internet access can participate in TEAM auctions. This brings maximum exposure to a seller’s cattle. Frequently cattle are pictured, described and sold the same week. Utilizing digital photographs gives TEAM a huge advantage over using videos. Videos can be blurred or make it difficult to see the condition of the cattle. Photographs allow viewers to see the quality and condition of the cattle with no interruption, and the pictures can be maximized for key attention to details. TEAM can post up to six digital photographs of the cattle. Multiple auctions weekly gives TEAM a huge competitive advantage. The seller and buyer can react to the ever-changing market conditions, making decisions in a manner timely to these fluctuations. For more information on marketing cattle through TEAM, visit www.centrallivestock.com and click on the TEAM link. Local TEAM agent contact information can be found on the Web site, or call 800.733.1844. n

Testing Available through Genex
By: Mary Raether, Beef Support Coordinator
Genex currently offers testing for Arthrogryposis Multiplex (AM) and Neuropathic Hydrocephalus (NH). Here are some Frequently Asked Questions regarding this testing:
Q. What is the procedure for AM/NH testing?
A. Contact your Genex representative or Genex Customer Service (888.333.1783) to request a testing kit that includes hair or blood cards, sample collection instructions, test submission form and a pre-printed Genex return envelope. Once you receive the kit, collect the samples as instructed, complete the forms and return these items with your payment in the envelope.
Q. How much do the tests cost? Can I charge them to my Genex account?
A. Each test is $26.00 per test per sample. Because NH and AM testing runs on different platforms, there is no savings realized by testing a sample for both. Payment in the form of a check, credit card or Farm Plan™ will be accepted. Payment must be received with your order.
Q. If I previously had AM testing done through Genex, can the same samples be used for NH?
A. Yes, as long as enough DNA matter is available on the original sample. Contact us at 800-927-2855 so we can verify with the lab that your sample will work.
Q. If I want only archived samples tested, is there a way to process my order more quickly?
A. Yes, we can save mail time. You can either request a form be emailed to you or the form can be printed from the Genex Web site. Go to www.crinet.com. Click on Genex Cooperative, Inc., and then on Beef to find the form. Once the form is completed, email it to mraether@crinet.com, or fax to Attn: Beef DNA Testing at 715.526.3219. Payment will be needed at the time of ordering, so credit card or Farm Plan will work with this method. The lab will still require approximately 10 business days to process the test, but time will be saved mailing forms.
Q. How long will it take to receive my results and how will I receive them? Do you notify the breed association of the results?
A. Once the lab has received the samples, it will take approximately 10 business days for them to complete the testing. Results can be emailed, faxed or mailed to you. The lab forwards your results to the appropriate breed association. In the near future, Genex will offer the Osteopetrosis (OS) test along with coat color, parent verification and GeneSTAR® Molecular Value Predictions™ (MVPs) through Pfizer Animal Genetics. Watch the Web site for updates. n

Micro Beef PVP Testing By: Jena Swanson, TEAM Marketing and Administration Manager, Central Livestock
Central Livestock and Genex are proud to offer you a service to increase your profitability. Representatives in Idaho, Minnesota, Nevada, North Dakota, Oregon, Wisconsin and Washington are now certified as Micro PVP agents. Used by thousands of cattlemen, MICRO PVP offers a simple and cost-effective way to qualify cattle for age and source verification at all stages of the beef supply chain. The MICRO PVP is a USDA-approved Process Verified Program. The program may be used by ranchers, feedyards or other producers to qualify cattle for export programs. The MICRO PVP Ranch Program allows ranches to age-verify and enroll their cattle in a USDA-approved program prior to shipping cattle from the ranch. Audits are conducted via phone or on-site and ranches maintain full control over their cattle marketing options.
To enroll cattle for age verification, the rancher must follow these steps: 1. Record age information in calving books, calendars or other formats. Premise I.D. is optional. 2. Tag the cattle with EID tags and record information on supplied worksheets. 3. Complete an Audit Request Form and send to Micro Beef. 4. Audit completed via phone or on-site, verifying the calving dates. 5. Micro Beef reviews the audit and, if passed, generates an official Approval Letter. Cattle are then officially verified and enrolled in a USDA-approved program. To learn more about enrolling your cattle for age and source verification, contact Central Livestock at 800-733-1844 or Genex at 888-333-1783. n

Genex Cooperative, Inc. will once again be marketing ESTROTECT™ Heat Detection patches to beef producers in the United States and Canada. ESTROTECT is an economical self-adhesive heat detection patch featuring a “scratch-off” technology. After the animal is mounted, the fluorescent layer underneath is shown for easy observation and reading. Additional mountings result in increased color exposure. Genex currently has three colors available – orange/red, green and pink.
Application Procedures
Warm ESTROTECT to human-body temperature before application. Remove dirt, sand, dust, shedding and loose hair from the tailhead. Press ESTROTECT onto the hair across the backbone of the cow and between the hip and tail head, spaced perpendicular to the spine. Rub onto the hair with your bare fingers. Do not apply in rainy weather.

Profit Maker Bulls and Genex Team Up on
Profit Enhancement Project Over the past 25 years, Profit Maker Bulls has developed, performance tested and marketed more than 15,000 bulls. In the fall of 2008, the decision was made to take genetic evaluation one step further and install a GrowSafe Individual Feed Consumption Measurement System. Dave Bittner, General Manager of Profit Maker Bulls, believes in these days of tight profit margins, in all segments of the cattle industry, the opportunity to use genetic selection to reduce feed costs by 10 - 15 percent could not be overlooked. “Feed costs represent the largest expense item for all segments of the industry including cow calf producers, backgrounders and cattle feeders,” stated Bittner. “The only practical way to reduce feed costs is to select and propagate the genetics of cattle that can gain rapidly and maintain themselves with less feed.” The GrowSafe system uses an electronic identity tag to record the animal that is eating and weighs the feed unit several times each second to determine how much feed that animal has eaten. At the end of the test, the quantity of feed that each animal should have eaten for his weight and gain is calculated and compared to the quantity actually eaten. If the animal ate less than expected, he is efficient. If he ate more than expected, he is inefficient. Enhancing the profitability of their customers is the goal of both Profit Maker Bulls and Genex Cooperative, Inc. With reliable selection for feed efficiency through DNA markers somewhere off into the future, the GrowSafe System presented an immediate opportunity to compare individual cattle and hence sire groups for feed efficiency.
Grow Safe System - Feed Units on Weigh Bars
The mutual objective of quantifying the genetic differences and making superior genetics available to their customers made the joint evaluation project of Profit Maker Bulls and Genex a logical one. The Profit Maker Bulls Genetic Alliance members are breeding their cows to Genex sires. They are using proven sires to provide a reference point and promising young sires to quantify their potential. The first calves from this project hit the ground in mid August. Following weaning next spring, the bull calves and many of the heifer calves will be tested for feed efficiency at Profit Maker Bulls with their GrowSafe System. We’ll keep you posted on the results. n
