BOARD OF DIRECTORS Paul Greene, President Berlin, N.Y., 518.658.2419 Duane Nelson, 1st Vice President Winthrop, Minn., 507.647.2540

The cow/calf industry is enjoying record prices. Bull sales are at record highs, and it’s common to see sale averages over $5,000. The outstanding genetic bulls are being sought after and are well paid for in today’s market. The seedstock industry is enjoying the rewards for their labor of high genetic inputs and years of artificial insemination (A.I.) to build their herds.

Jimmy Franks, 2nd Vice President Waynesboro, Ga., 706.437.0527 John Ruedinger, Secretary Van Dyne, Wis., 920.922.9899 Jacques Couture Westfield, Vt., 802.744.2733 Jim Crocker Valley City, Ohio, 330.483.3709

Long debated has been the cost of commercial beef A.I. and its advantages over natural service (the bull). In this current time, when bulls are selling for record prices, never before has an A.I. program been so cost effective. Turn to Page 6 to analyze the cost of A.I. vs. The Bull.

Finding the

Right Piece to th Each farm or ranch offers a unique situation – different breed compositions, body types, pedigrees, levels of precipitation and herd genetic goals all have a big influence on which sires are “best” to incorporate via artificial insemination (A.I.). While the most popular A.I. sires become popular by proving they can work work well in a wide range of breeding programs, the best fit for your cows may not be the bull that everyone else is using. The following sires deserve consideration; you may find the perfect fit for your herd’s genetic puzzle. 1AN01183 FRONT RANGE is an ideal mating for daughters of 1AN01064 Traveler 004, 1AN01116 Upward and 1AN01044 Final Answer. His calves’ moderate birth weights and growth to weaning have made him a recent favorite of many cattlemen. Also take advantage of his GenChoice™ sexed semen availability, both maleand female-sorted semen is available at a very reasonable price. 1AN01180 GRASS MASTER progeny are deep-bodied, sound made cattle with a very maternal look. He is an ideal sire for use during the rebuilding phase of the U.S. cowherd to make long-lived, profitable females. Grass Master is a highly consistent sire because of his well designed maternal pedigree.

1AN01164 ARMOR combines two of the breed’s all time most popular sires, In Focus and 1AN01000 New Day. Armor progeny are born easily, have outstanding vigor and perform well. Expect the daughters to be no-nonsense cows that bring in healthy and hefty calves year in and year out. Armor’s EPDs are very solid as he continues to gain accuracy. 1AN01165 SUBSTANCE is the outcross sire the breed has been seeking. Substance is a good mating for 1AN01064 Traveler 004, 1AN01044 Final Answer and 1AN01170 Chisum daughters. He offers moderate birth weights with outstanding growth and carcass balance. This overlooked sire is gaining traction as more and more breeders find his well balanced EPD profile, useful pedigree and very favorable progeny reports.

1AN01145 JACKSON is a big performance sire with high-end marbling genetics that work in the real world. Jackson is an outcross to Objective, Predestined and In Focus that won’t sacrifice marbling. The first Jackson daughters in production have a 105 nursing ratio.

eOneGenetic Puzzle size fits all? No way. Brad Johnson, Beef Programs Administration Manager

1AR00928 HALFMANN R588 is one of the breed’s best CED, low BW sires. Calves have excelled in the Halfmann Red Angus program in Texas. His daughters are hard working, fertile cows and sons are easily saleable as calving ease sires with good muscling.

1HP00831 WORLDWIDE is proving to make light birth weight calves ideal for first calf heifers. He is seeing use in registered Hereford operations as well as commercial herds looking to make highly valuable baldy replacement females. His progeny are often well pigmented and very attractive.

1AR00923 BIG TIME sires docile progeny with good depth of heel and an ideal leg set. He works well on moderate to small cows that need more performance and frame. Big Time is ideal for producers who feed their own cattle and want to retain heifers that will become productive, well mannered cows. 1SM00114 TUITION is proving to be an outstanding combination of Angus marbling, fleshing ability and cow power with Simmental meat yield, visual muscle and fertility. Many producers are looking to SimAngus A.I. sires as an easy way to maintain reasonable levels of heterosis in a planned crossbreeding system. Tuition is the choice of many due to his excellent balance across almost all traits. This homozygous black, homozygous polled sire is in the top five percent of the breed for API and top one percent for TI.

The A.I. Advanta Long debated has been the cost of commercial beef artificial insemination (A.I.) and its advantages over natural service (the bull). In this current time, when bulls are selling for record prices, never before has an A.I. program been so cost effective. The first step is analyzing the cost of a natural service bull. What is the cost of the average bull today? Sometimes cow/calf producers don’t breakdown the costs of a bull on a per calf basis, however the costs are real. It’s surprising to find it costs $84.06 per calf on a $5,000 bull. Use the calculations to the right as a guide and input your own figures.

$5,000 Bull cost $500 10% Lifetime risk (death, injury, loss of use) -$1800 Salvage value

(2000 pounds x $0.90 per pound)

$3700 Gross cost of bull $150

Pasture cost/year

$300 Winter feed/year $100

Other costs (fencing, corrals)

$150 Veterinary (semen tesing, vaccine, trich testing) $700 Total cost/year 25 - Annual number of cows per bull 23 - Number of pregnancies per year 3 - Average number of years of bull use 69 - Number of calves born per lifetime per bull $3700 Gross cost of bull $2100 Annual cost per year ($700) x 3 years $5800 Total bull cost $5800 ÷ 69 = $84.06 Cost per calf

ge A.I. vs. The Bull

Willie Altenburg, AVP Beef Marketing

A.I. can be a good economic alternative. Understand, you’ll need a sound genetic clean up bull to follow up a good A.I. program. But an A.I. program, combined with a good heat synchronization program can get 60 percent of your heifers and cows pregnant on the first day of the breeding season. Genex offers the industry’s best “chute-side” service, with excellent technician service and the manpower to get the job done, Genex is here to assist with your A.I. project. Let’s analyze the cost of an A.I. project and use the example of A.I. breeding 100 females.

Synchronization System – 7-Day CO-Synch + CIDR® $17.00 ($10 CIDR + $2.50 Prostaglandin + $2.25 x 2 GnRH) $8.00 Insemination fee $17.00 Semen cost $42.00 Total cost 100 females 60% conception rate 60 calves $42.00 ÷ .60 = $70.00 Total cost per A.I. pregnancy The cost per A.I. pregnancy is less than the cost of the average bull today. Other factors to take into consideration are the superior genetics obtained through A.I., the option to use calving ease sires on heifers or to A.I. your cows to outstanding growth or maternal genetics. Keep in mind earlier calving equals extra pounds in the fall. The A.I. Advantage!

Every Daywhen Counts it comes to finding open cows. Know as early as 29 days post breeding with the use of DG29™ blood pregnancy test.

The complete kit includes all required materials from blood tubes to needles and the shipping container. Test one cow or a whole herd and have results emailed within days.

“I would recommend DG29 to producers because of the accuracy, the ability to see if an animal is pregnant and timing which allows you to test as early as 29 days of breeding A.I.” Joe Stephens, Stephens Angus Farm, Kenton, Tenn.

“The DG29 blood pregnancy test is nice because it allows us to pregnancy check on our own time. We can pull blood when it’s convenient for us on as few or as many cows as we want and don’t have to worry about scheduling a veterinarian.” Rick Hubbell, Hubbell Ranch, Quemado, N.M.

High Quality Semen Independent third party data proves that Genex semen is the highest quality in the industry. While these comparisons are based on dairy inseminations, Genex uses the exact same semen processing protocols for both beef and dairy semen. Therefore, the stud comparisons are relevant to beef producers. The numbers in the chart reflect the increase or decrease from average for a sire’s conception rate. For example, in 2011, Genex sires averaged a 1.5% greater conception rate than the industry’s average bull.

IN THE NEWS Genex Shows Cattle Producers Ease of Use of A.I. and Breeding Barn At the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association convention and trade show in Nashville, Tenn., the National Association of Animal Breeders beef committee and Genex demonstrated artificial insemination (A.I.) techniques, cattle handling and use of the A.I. breeding barn. During the trade show, six demonstrations were performed over three days with more than 300 people in attendance. In addition, Genex representatives shared their knowledge with another 140 cattlemen from across the U.S. who attended the Pfizer-sponsored Cattlemen’s College. Attendees of the Cattlemen’s College were able to participate in the semen handling, EAZI-BREEDTM CIDR® and live cow demonstrations using the A.I. breeding barn.

CRI Annual Meeting Delegates, who were elected by the membership, will gather in Bloomington, Minn. March 20 and 21 for the CRI Annual Meeting. At the Annual Meeting, delegates will attend education sessions, learn about the cooperative’s performance and gather as a region to elect their board member. Beef and dairy producers from all 48 continental U.S. states have the opportunity to become Genex members, delegates and directors. Becoming a member allows you to have a grassroots input in the governance of your cooperative! To become a member, simply: purchase $200 of semen, products and/or services in a 12-month period, complete a membership form and have your social security number or tax identification number on file at Genex.

Consider the Impact of

Estrus Synchro

Economic considerations related to use of estrus synchronization and choice of the various protocols to use in beef heifers and cows was reviewed by Johnson and Jones (2004). Hughes (2005) reported that opportunities to increase profits for cow/ calf operations lie in managing females from the later calving intervals forward toward the first and second 21-day calving intervals. Hughes (2005) reports that added pounds are the economic reward to tightening up the calving interval. The Cow Herd Appraisal Performance Software (CHAPS) benchmark 22

values utilize IRM-SPA guidelines for operating high production herds. These guidelines suggest that 61 percent of the calves within a herd should be born by day 21 of the calving period, 85 percent by day 42, and 94 percent by day 63. Hughes (2005) goes on to say that today’s high market prices are generating big economic rewards to intensified management, but more specifically “management as usual” may be what is amiss for many cow calf producers.

on Calving Distribution

Reprinted with permission from: Proceedings Applied Reproductive Strategies in Beef Cattle. August 31-September 1, 2011. Joplin, MO.

Finally, Figure 11 illustrates the calving profile for cows at the University of Missouri Forage Systems Research Center in Linneus, Mo., over a two year period. This herd maintains a 45-day breeding season, and until the spring of 2004, estrus synchronization and A.I. were not utilized. Figure 11 illustrates the calving profile of cows that calved during the spring of 2004 as a result of natural service during the 2003 breeding season. Figure 11 also illustrates the calving profile for cows that calved during the spring of 2005 as a result of fixed-time A.I. performed during the 2004 breeding season (Schafer, 2005; Patterson et al., 2006). This herd has been intensively managed over the years to breed successfully in a 45-day period with natural service. Notice, however, the increased percentage of cows that calved early in the calving period as a result of fixed-time A.I. performed during the previous year’s breeding season. Estrus synchronization at this location in one year resulted in an increase of seven days postpartum among cows at the start of the breeding period, which translates into an increase in calf age at weaning of seven calf days. These figures (Figures 10, 11) collectively demonstrate that estrus synchronization can be used effectively to influence calving distribution patterns during the subsequent calving period, which in turn impacts the economics of herds at weaning time.

Figure 10. Calving distributions combined for three of the four locations in the study by Schafer, 2005). 8 Cumulative Calf % by: Day 15 = 64% Day 21 = 70% Day 30 = 77% Day 42 = 91%

The figure illustrates the calving profiles of cows that calved during the spring of 2004 as a result of natural service during the 2003 breeding season, and calving profiles for cows that calved during the spring of 2005 as a result of fixed time A.I. performed during the 2004 breeding season (Schafer, 2005). 120 100

% of Calves Born

Figure 10 illustrates the combined calving data for three of four locations in the study reported by Schafer (2005). Data from the fourth location was not included in the summary since cows that failed to conceive to artificial insemination (A.I.) were sold prior to the calving period. It is interesting to note that in comparison to the recommendation by Hughes (2005), 64 percent of the cows in this study had calved by day 15, 70 percent by day 21, 77 percent by day 30, and 91 percent by day 42. The economic reward for improvements in calf weaning weight that result from an increase in calf age at weaning, in many cases may offset the cost of implementing estrus synchronization in beef herds.
