Reproduction! is the Conduit for Genetics Willie Altenburg, AVP, Beef Marketing

Getting cows and heifers pregnant with artificial insemination (A.I.) is the conduit to adding good genetics to a cow herd. Without effective synchronization systems and high conception A.I. breeding programs, no real genetic progress can be made. Once these two criteria are met, the progress is expediential. Only then can real strides in cow herd improvement and end product quality enhancement can be made genetically.

Genex has joined forces with the University of Missouri and several industry entities in a new venture called the Quality Beef program. Several herds have been involved with synchronizing and breeding A.I. to proven bulls, therefore, the template for this project is built. The plan is to replicate it and expand it. Below are two examples of what can happen to the value of using proven sires to 1) the Adding value from proven genetics replacement value of females in Show-Me-Select sales and 2) the value of a herd’s end Tier One *NS bred $1549 Baseline product. Both are examples of Tier One A.I. bred $1695 +$146 using A.I. to add real value to a Tier Two *NS bred $1786 +$237 cow herd’s genetic merit. Tier Two A.I. bred $1906 +$357

Impact of Summer Heat and Nutritional Changes on

Reproductive Perf

As we move into this fall, many of you will be performing pregnancy diagnosis on your cow herd. With the heat and drought we have had this summer you may wonder what the impact may be on your reproductive success. In order to understand how heat stress and change in nutrition may impact reproductive success, one must first understand embryo development. Just like the estrous cycle, embryo development begins on day 0, or the day of standing estrus. This

4

is the day the female is receptive to the male. Ovulation occurs on day one or about 30 hours after the first standing mount. If viable sperm is present, fertilization occurs inside the oviduct shortly after ovulation. The first cell division occurs on day two, and by day three the embryo has reached the eight-cell stage. Between days five and six the embryo migrates into the uterine horn and by day seven to eight it forms into a blastocyst. At this stage two distinct parts of the embryo can be seen: 1) the inner cell mass, which will form into the fetus and 2) the trophoblast, which will

form into the placenta. Between days nine and 11 the embryo hatches from the zona pellucida, a protective shell that has surrounded the embryo to this point. Then, on days 15 to 17, the embryo sends a signal to the cow to tell her she is pregnant. This is the first signal that the cow gets to know if she is pregnant. The embryo attaches to the uterus beginning on day 19, and around day 25, placentation, cellular interface between the cow and the calf, begins. By day 42 the embryo has fully attached to the uterus of the cow. The first impact on reproductive success you may have seen is decreased estrus detection rates if you synchronized your cows/ heifers. When the weather is too hot, animals tend not to move around as much and do not show signs of standing estrus. Heat detection is a vital part of getting more animals pregnant. Since fewer animals are seen in heat, fewer animals can be inseminated. In this case, timed artificial insemination (A.I.) would be the best protocol to use, because it eliminates heat detection. Timed A.I. has increased pregnancy rates over animals inseminated 12 hours after estrus detection in conditions of heat stress. This is most likely due to fewer animals showing signs of estrus when under heat stress. During the early stages of development is the time point when the embryo is most susceptible to increased temperatures. Temperature, humidity, radiant heat, and wind all affect heat stress in cows. The rectal temperature of cattle is normally 102.2oF, and an increase in rectal temperature by as little as 2oF can result in decreased embryonic development. When rectal temperatures reach 105.8oF for as little as nine hours on the day of insemination, embryonic development can be compromised. Heat stress has also been shown to change follicular waves, resulting in reduced oocyte quality. Researchers have shown that heat stress 42 days prior to and up to 40 days after breeding can affect pregnancy rates. The lack of rain in many parts of the country could also have an impact on reproductive success. Nutritionally mediated changes to the uterine environment can occur by changing components of uterine secretions or by influencing the circulating concentrations of progesterone that regulate the uterine environment. Heifers fed only 85% of maintenance requirements of energy and protein had reduced embryo development on day three and day eight compared to heifers fed 100% maintenance indicating decreased embryonic growth. Therefore, animals that consume less than maintenance requirements due to drought situation during early embryo development may have decreased embryo survival. In addition, when animals are supplemented to make sure requirements are met, it

is important that their diet is balanced for both energy and protein. Excess protein intake can directly influence the uterine environment. Excess intake of protein (25% excess of undegradable intake protein or degradable intake protein) had no effect on uterine environment on the day of estrus but altered the environment of the uterus on day seven and has been reported to decrease conception rates. This is around the same time as embryonic blastocyst formation. Therefore, excess or under nutrition can have a tremendous impact on embryo survival and the ability to conceive or maintain pregnancy during a defined breeding season. Getting cows/heifers pregnant during the breeding season, especially early in the breeding season, can have a tremendous impact on the profitability of a cow/calf operation. Tremendous amounts of time, effort, and costs are required to have a successful breeding season (natural service or A.I.), and both heat stress and changes in nutritional level during critical time points of embryo development can have a tremendous negative impact on pregnancy rates.

Applied Reproductive Strategies in Beef Cattle The 2012 Applied Reproductive Strategies in Beef Cattle conference will be held in Sioux Falls, S.D. Dec. 3-4, 2012. This year’s conference will focus on how we utilize advancing technologies to improve reproductive efficiencies, profitability and the product that we all enjoy so well - beef! This is a tremendous opportunity to hear 27 speakers from across the U.S. and Canada as they address how to profit from implementing technology, and the latest research in the fields of reproduction, nutrition and genetics. This conference is geared to veterinarians and producers, so all presentations will be applicable on your cattle operations. Developing Strate to Facilitate Use of Gender-Selected Semen in Conjunction with

Heifer study. A recent research study conducted by the University of Missouri in collaboration with Genex was designed to test the hypothesis that pregnancy rates resulting from fixedtime artificial insemination (A.I.) using sex-sorted semen and after synchronization of estrus following administration of the 14-day CIDR®-PG protocol would be improved by extending the interval from prostaglandin (PG) to A.I. by six hours. Because fertility with sex-sorted sperm is lower than with conventional (unsexed) semen, especially with appointment breeding, profitable use requires careful consideration. Although appointment breeding without heat detection is not recommended with sex-sorted semen, if this is done, the previously recommended appointment time for use in heifers has been to perform inseminations six hours later than that for conventional semen.

Development of an effective strategy to synchronize estrus prior to fixed-time A.I. with sex-sorted semen would open the door to expanded use of this technology. Beef heifers in this study (n=540) were assigned to one of three treatments. Heifers were assigned to treatment according to age, reproductive tract score and weight. All heifers received an EAZI-BREED™ CIDR® insert for 14 days and PG was administered 16 days after CIDR removal. ESTROTECT™ heat detection patches were used to determine estrus response prior to fixed-time A.I. Heifers were inseminated at predetermined assigned times by a single technician according to treatment after PG with GnRH administered at A.I. The three treatments included: • Insemination 66 hours after PG with conventional semen • Insemination 66 hours after PG with sex-sorted semen • Insemination 72 hours after PG with sex-sorted semen Results from the field trial confirmed previous recommendations regarding use of sex-sorted semen. Pregnancy rates were higher among heifers that were inseminated with conventional versus sex-sorted semen. Furthermore, heifers that exhibited estrus prior

to fixed-time A.I. had higher pregnancy rates than heifers that failed to exhibit estrus. When pregnancy rates were compared on the basis of those heifers that were inseminated using sex-sorted semen, there was an advantage for those heifers that were inseminated at 72 versus 66 hours after PG. Pregnancy rates for heifers inseminated at 72 hours with sex-sorted semen averaged 39% (see Table 1), however 45% of the heifers in this group that exhibited estrus became pregnant. These results confirm previous studies which recommend a sensible approach to follow when fixed-time A.I. is preferred. When using fixedtime A.I., use sex-sorted semen for those heifers that exhibited estrus based on activated ESTROTECT patches, and that less expensive conventional semen be used at the time fixed-time A.I. is performed for heifers that failed to exhibit estrus. Cow study. A second experiment was conducted using cows to test the hypothesis that pregnancy rates resulting from fixedtime A.I. using sex-sorted semen and after synchronization of estrus following administration of the 7-day CO-Synch + CIDR protocol with fixed-time A.I. at 66 hours would be improved by extending the interval from PG to A.I. by eight hours.

Fixed-Time A.I. Breeding Programs in Beef Heifers and Cows JM Nash, SL Lock, DA Mallory, NT Martin, JM Thomas, SE Poock, and DJ Patterson University of Missouri and Genex Cooperative, Inc.

Beef cows (n=300) were assigned to one of three treatments according to age, calving date and body condition score. All cows were administered GnRH (100 µg Cystorelin) at CIDR insertion, and CIDRs remained inserted for a period of seven days. All cows were administered PG (25 mg Lutalyse) at CIDR removal. The three treatments included: • Insemination 66 hours after PG with conventional semen. • Insemination 66 hours after PG with sex-sorted semen. • Insemination 74 hours after PG with sex-sorted semen. ESTROTECT heat detection patches were used to determine estrus response prior to fixed-time A.I. Cows were inseminated at the predetermined assigned times by a single technician according to treatment after PG with GnRH administered at A.I. Results from the field trial confirmed previous observations regarding use of sex-sorted semen. Pregnancy rates were higher among cows that were inseminated with conventional versus sex-sorted semen. Furthermore, cows that exhibited estrus prior to fixed-time A.I. had higher pregnancy rates than cows that failed to exhibit estrus. When pregnancy rates among treatments were compared on the basis of those cows that were inseminated using sex-sorted semen and that exhibited estrus, an improvement in pregnancy rates was seen among cows that were inseminated at 66 versus 74 hours after PG. Pregnancy rates for these cows averaged 59% (see Table 2). Interestingly, in this study involving cows, there was no advantage to postponing insemination to a later time as was seen in the heifer

study. As with heifers however, these results support previous studies which recommend a sensible approach to follow when fixed-time A.I. is preferred. When using fixed-time A.I. use sex-sorted semen for those cows that exhibited estrus based on activated ESTROTECT patches, and that less expensive conventional semen be used at the time fixed-time A.I. is performed for cows that failed to exhibit estrus. This study took place at Ratcliff Ranch, Okla. where they run 5000 cows. Each year they sell 300-400 herd bulls and 1500 bred females to commercial cattlemen. “What really got the whole discussion started was when I was talking to Stan Lock of Genex about the 14-day CIDR protocol,” explains Heath Kohler, ranch manager at Ratcliff Ranch, Vinita, Okla. “Stan mentioned that Genex and the University of Missouri wanted to do a study on sorted semen. I was game for being a part of the study; with the drought I truly believe that females are going to be at a premium and the more of them we can get on the ground the better.” Learn more about Ratcliff Ranch and how Genex provides them with the industry’s best chute-side service by scanning the QR code or visit: http://youtu.be/KffbHTugpGc

Multi-Breed EPD Base

Simplifies Selection The fall 2012 genetic evaluations of the American Simmental Association (ASA) and Red Angus Association of America (RAAA) marks the first time major breeds have expressed their EPDs on a common base. Beef producers will now be able to directly compare EPDs across breeds. This means, for the first time in history, producers will be able to directly compare Red Angus, Simmental and registered hybrid/composite seedstock. For decades, each breed association has presented their EPDs in their own language (the base). The base is a reference point for any trait against which subsequent generations of animals are compared. Some breeds pick a given year (several generations of cattle ago) as their base year, while others set the base as the average EPDs of a specific group of high accuracy sires. This assures that the base population, which future calf crops are to be measured against, remains stable.

1AR00907 BIG SKY

1SM00094 IN DEW TIME

It will take time for producers to become accustom to forming a common base. However, the boards of the ASA and RAAA unanimously agreed this was a positive step for the beef industry. It will take some time to adjust to looking at EPDs on the new base. Table 1 shows 1AR00907 BIG SKY on the old RAAA base compared to his EPDs on the new multi-breed base. Notice that his EPD changed, however his rank within the breed remained relatively the same. Table 2 provides a purebred Simmental example. Again, you will notice that the EPDs for 1SM00094 IN DEW TIME changed but his rank within the breed remained relatively the same. Red Angus Percentiles Tables Top % CED 1%

Percentile ranks are an easy, useful tool to determine where an animal ranks within a given population. It’s important to realize the multi-breed base allows for direct comparison of Red Angus and Simmental EPDs, while the percentile ranks only rank or compare the genetics of a given breed. Thus, a Simmental animal’s percentile rank will be determined on a Simmental table, while a Red Angus animal’s ranking will be determined on a Red Angus percentile table.
