SIN CITY PRESENTS/NOV. 2014
THE VEGAS NATIVE As a Nevada native the Sesquicentennial anniversary of our statehood is a pretty significant milestone, A time for both celebration and reflection. As I have been reading much about this landmark anniversary I discovered quite a few things I didn’t know about our great State. Here’s one I found pretty interesting. Living in the State of Nevada has long offered many benefits that go beyond the entertainment lifestyle but it has also struggled along the way to its 150th birthday. There have been many times we had to get creative to survive! Here’s one really great example! In the 1930’s and 40’s an advertising campaign designed to encourage wealthy people to move to the “Silver State.” The campaign name was “The One Sound State” and was the first advertising campaign targeting more than 10,000 wealthy individuals boasting “Move Here We Won’t Tax You” and was devised as a means to cope with the “Great Depression.” To this day the State of Nevada remains one of the most desirable states to do business in still offering many of these benefits, second only to Alaska in overall tax burdens. Nevada is called the battle born state because it was admitted to the union during the Civil War in 1864. Waddie Mitchell the Nevada Sesquicentennial Honorary Poet described Nevadan’s like this. (Listen to Waddie read the poem here) “Tough, proud state and people who won’t compromise their values but remain open-minded about the beliefs of others and are “liberal with their love.” I think that pretty much describes me. Battle born and Nevada proud!!

a sad truth. That is my two cents on the issue. More importantly is this: We have the coolest friendships we have built possibly in our lifetimes... I have married the woman that I obviously belonged with. Thanks to the help of those friendships. Especially since she is a girl I ran around the playground with all the way back in Kindergarten at Mt. View Elementary School! We grew up in Vegas! We have seen everything change since 1970. I watched the Apple Dumpling Gang and The Godfather at the only Drive in that still exists when those movies made the silver screen. SIN CITY PRESENTS/NOV. 2014 This month Sin City Presents celebrates the 60th anniversary of the Veterans Day Holiday by honoring our United States Veterans and Active Duty Military Personnel. Entertaining our troops and veterans has a long tradition in this great country and abroad this month we caught up with United States Veteran, Jason Ebs (Jet Velocity, ECOTONIC, Peter Criss on Bad Boys of KISS Tours with Ace Frehley) and had a chance to chat with him about Veterans Day and being a Veteran that serves Veterans. Let’s start with a little history about Veterans Day…. Veterans Day, originally named “Armistice Day” was commemorated for the first time. In 1919, one year after the signing of the armistice between Germany and the Allied nations came into effect at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918. Although the day was initially intended to honor Veterans of WWI in 1954 Congress to change the word "Armistice" to "Veterans" on June 1, 1954, and November 11 became a day to honor all American veterans, where ever and whenever they had served. We’ve had the pleasure of seeing Jason Ebs and the Jet Velocity “All Star” Rock n Roll party band perform on several occasions and there is something I have noticed every time Jason is on stage. There is always an American flag attached to his mic stand. Intrigued by this display I had to ask Jason about it and find out why he is so insistent on that very particular piece of his performance. Can you tell us about the significance of the American flag on your microphone stand?

“Thank God for our troops paying the ultimate sacrifice with their life and/or with their time allowing us to have the freedom to do what we love, playing music and be in the entertainment business, the freedom to express ourselves. It’s my way of paying tribute to the fallen and our men and women who have served and are still serving today. If weren’t for people on the front lines we wouldn’t have the freedom to do what we love." I know you are a Veteran as well, what Branch did you serve in? “Yes, I served in the U.S. Army Reserves!’ Thank you for your service! “I clearly didn’t give as much as some people have given. It’s interesting when I joined it was one of those things where I really fit the mold. They wanted me to go to OCS they wanted me to do all these things and I was going through this time in my life where I was teetering about what I wanted to do and I hadn’t made a clear decision. Ultimately, I decided to move to Southern Californian and pursue rock n roll.” And you know we’re thankful you did that too. Many of the events we have seen you perform at have been charity events. I’m sure you get approached often with requests for support and participation to help raise awareness and funds for their organizations, how do you choose which ones you support? “Well for me is kind of serendipitous, AIf it fits the schedule, if our schedule permits we try and help B- We have a couple of or organizations that we work
FREEDOM TO ROCK
ROCKSTAR EXECUTIVE & UNITED STATES VETERAN JASON EBS still a business. Has supporting charitable organizations become an important piece of your business model? “You know it’s become that even though that was not the intention, but again there’s that serendipity in play. In doing so we end up getting a fair amount of news coverage when the media comes out these events so it’s turned into that and one does feed the other. So yeah, it’s become a part of the business model.” Is there anything charitable organizations can do better to entice other musicians and artists to share their gift and talents to support and participate at their organizations?
with regularly, Toys 4 Tot’s with the Marines during the Christmas season and Veterans Village, in fact we have a show there on November 11th, (eleven eleven which is a pretty cool number) and others if they come up such as the one we did for Memorial Day with Rockin’ for the Warriors- Rockin’ for the Country, so yes so anytime we can we will.” Do you have a personal passion for the ones you choose? “Absolutely!” One of the things we try to focus on in Sin City Presents Magazine is the business side of the music. You do this because it’s what you love and are passionate, but at the end of the day it is
“Yeah, you know for the most part these type of events are well organized sometimes they are last minute and they do a good job overall, but every once in a while things slip through. There have been a couple of times where they have forgotten to mention the band when the press was there. But that’s not why we do this and I would never make a big deal out of it. So remember to mention the band’s name and maybe throw the website in there that might encourage others to get involved however, I wouldn’t want to see people getting involved for the wrong reasons either, so it’s kind of a double edge sword.“ Continue reading.....
SIN CITY PRESENTS/OCT. 2014 Going back to you being a Veteran and your military experience for a minute do you find yourself applying the skills and disciplines you obtained in your service to your day to day business? “Sure! The Military is very really good for certain things especially getting a routine. I fluctuate all of the time between working out and not working out, running and not running, smoking and not smoking, but that’s the Libra thing in me so that always happens but I am meticulous with my scheduling, I have been buying and using the same planner for ten years and write everything down because Mercury goes in to retrograde and hard drives crash. (laughing). I try to do my best and exercise, eat right and stay healthy and the organizational thing. My Father also served in the military so I grew up in a very strict upbringing with a very schedule oriented household. In today’s do it yourself business, whether it’s music, photography or whatever it is if there is no one pushing you and you’re not a self starter if you don’t have that discipline and structure.” The USO has been entertaining our troops for decades. Bob Hope hosted the first show. Held at March Air Field, now March Air Force Base in 1941. Why do you think they have been so successful and what kind of an impact do these type of tribute events have on the attendees and their families? “Well I think with events like those and people like Bob Hope the celebrity status help bring a lot of awareness and adds credibility to it. My Mother in Law who is 89 was a USO entertainer; she was with a group called “The Cruz Sisters” so yeah they’ve been around a long time. It apparently runs in the family
(warm smile on Jason’s face) she did the same type of things we are doing. I just think it all has a really good feeling. You know Gene Simmons and KISS do a lot of tribute type shows and I think it just gives them an reward a thank you for all that they do.” And the families how do you think they feel when they know one of their loved ones got to attend a show like that? “I think the families feel appreciative that their loved ones hard work and sacrifice is recognized and appreciated. I know I would if I had someone serving that I wasn’t able to see. Music is the universal language and a lot of the songs being pertained to that. We have a song on our first ECOTONIC album “Electrified” called “All AMERICAN” and it says democratic, independent or republican, it doesn’t matter who we are we’re all Americans. So we’re all unified by that anyway and music is the thing that brings the world together so it’s not only like its national recognition it’s worldwide recognition. What‘s your most memorable moment performing for a charity event?
“Well there are a couple of them, there was a Veteran at the first event we played for Veterans Village that came up to us at the stage and had so much love for our country that he nearly had us all in tears. It was so heartfelt and you could see how happy he was to be there enjoying the day and then I guess the Rockin’ For The Warriors event. Everything just sort of felt right at that event the stage the sound the atmosphere. I think that’s where I felt we had the most impact” Do you think as a Veteran your service ever really stops? “That’s a good question, not as far as for me spreading the ideals.” I see you still serving our country through your music.
“Well you know yeah hence the American Flag on the mic stand. I think I am constantly bringing awareness to it” How does performing at this type of event affect you on a personal level? “It feels really good on a non selfish level. Just because the people that they are appreciated. And depending on the line up we have, Derrick Pontier from
event in December. With ECOTONIC we’re recording some new music right now. Slade (Chris Slade (AC/CD)) had to go back to England for a little bit but he’ll be back in January and we’ll be performing at the NAMM show in L.A. and then we’ll back in the studio." When can we expect a new CD release then from ECOTONIC? “I would say probably summer of 2015 for our next release. We’re about three songs in now and we’ll probably pound out another five while Slade is here.” What about ROCKGODZ?
Great White he plays with us when he can and he’s a vet too. We’re Rock n Roll Vets!” Is there anything we missed in regards to your military service or your giving back through your music? "Well, First God Bless America! No matter what peoples say or who they criticize for being in charge to the best of my knowledge this is still the best country to live in. We’re still the Country that everyone wants to get to. I think we should have an awareness of being self serving without being selfish. I think we should have an awareness of being good to each other as opposed to being so cut throat less greed and more community”
“YEAH! ROCKGODZ Hall of Fame Awards is coming up on February 11th at Vamp’d Vegas. We also have a new ROCKGODZ television show coming out. It’s going to have a SNL meets MTV news twist to it. So we’re going to have a rock report, special guests, live performances it’s going to be really cool. We’re working with a local station and the show will be available on cable. We are looking at a March 1st target for the first airing. We’re really excited about that!” One last question and it’s one we’ve been asking of everyone. There’s this resurgence of rock n roll in Las Vegas, can the economy here continue to support the number of musicians that now call Las Vegas their home?
“You know I hope so! We were Californians and were always going to be Californians at heart We know you have a show coming to a certain extent but a lot of up on November 11th with Jet California is closing. The Whiskey Velocity at Veterans Village are going down, The House of Blues, there any other items on the The Cat Club, Coconut Teaser, The calendar you would like to share Cat n The Fiddle, The Key Club, with our readers? The Rainbow – it’s sad, it’s really sad to watch that happening "I believe we’ll be at the Westgate because these were so many again for the Marines Toys for Tots places that really spawned so
many great bands. The good thing about Las Vegas from what I have seen so far is that there are policies in place as far as playing at or on casinos even if you are playing in the parking lot you are getting paid. So that part of it is good. What I have been hearing is that it looks like pay to play is coming to a couple of clubs here in Las Vegas. Which means you have to pre sell tickets to guarantee the club x number of dollars. So bands have to scramble and sell tickets for whatever they can so they don’t lose their money on gig night. That’s kind of the model that killed L.A. There are a lot of bands breaking out of Vegas right now and that’s good because there hasn’t really been a concentrated area that bands break out of. There’s a buzz here” Any advice for up and coming artists? “I think education is important. I was going to Penn State I left Penn State to do music but in this do it yourself world you can’t rely on anything happening, you have to do it yourself. I live on the concept that the cream rises to the top, OH GOD I HOPE THAT’S TRUE! Slso, if you're lucky enough to find a loving partner, hold onto them because not everyone can deal with the rock & roll lifestyle, Janea's my rock:) Don’t take the safe and sound route as there is none. FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS!”

SIN CITY PRESENTS/NOV. 2014 NAMM is mainly geared towards company’s being able to show off their latest and greatest gear to industry buyers and sellers. Companies like Guitar Center, Sweetwater, and Sam Ash send their company buyers to NAMM to work out purchasing deals for equipment. NAMM is not meant for musicians to walk in and hunt for endorsements. This is a common misconception So how can NAMM benefit you as a musician?
Founded in 1901, NAMM stands for the National Association of Music Merchants, although since its inception NAMM has evolved from a national retail association into an international association whose members now include commercial companies, distributors, affiliates and manufacturers.
First and foremost it’s a great place to network and meet new people. Industry professionals from all over the world come to NAMM every year. There are seminars demos and events held by many of the major equipment, software, and instrument manufacturers these are the best opportunity to meet others, make contacts, and find new gear, software, instruments you can use. NAMM also holds after parties when the convention floor closes. These parties are usually held at one of the local hotels. These include concerts featuring world class artists showcasing the latest equipment.
As a musician who has been attending NAMM nearly 15 years on and off. I have had the pleasure of making an amazing number of contacts in the business. As a musician NAMM offers you the opportunity to meet other musicians, and people who work in the business to make contacts, check out the latest new gear, and even new bands and music. First thing all musicians should know is that NAMM is an invite only event. Only on Sundays is the NAMM show open to a limited number of guests that have not been invited.
AMP UP YOU R BRAND 16
NETWORKING AT NAMM How can you attend NAMM? In order to attend NAMM you need to be invited by one of the manufacturers, buyers, or media outlets who cover the event. Another way to attend is to register yourself with the NAMM foundation and get a badge. Badges are very limited so dont expect just joining NAMM will get you one. Winter Namm takes place January 22-25 at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim California. The event is held twice a year. Once in Anaheim and once in Nashville. For more information about NAMM or to register as a NAMM member you can visit http://www.NAMM.org -Jason Constantine
