POLYNOMIALS REVIEW Classifying through Multiplication

Do you remember how to classify polynomials?

How would you classify 3x2 – 2x?

Take a look at this example of adding polynomials. (3x2 – x + 5) + (4x2 + 5x – 2) (3x2 + 4x2) + (-x + 5x) + (5 – 2) 7x + 4x + 3 2

Put like terms together.

Combine like terms.

Now look at this example of subtracting polynomials.

2

2

(6x + 11x – 3) – (3x + 5x + 9) 2

2

(6x + 11x – 3) + (-3x - 5x - 9) 2

Use the definition of subtraction.

2

(6x – 3x ) + (11x – 5x) + (-3 – 9) 2

Put like terms together.

3x + 6x – 12 Combine like terms.

Can you add: (2x2 – x + 1) + (3x – 6)? Can you subtract: (5x2 – 3x – 1)-(x2 – x – 6)?

Now let’s review multiplication! Look at the three examples below!

Now it’s your turn! Multiply: 3x2(x2 – 3x + 2) (2x + 1)(x – 4) (x + 1)(3x + 2)
