Parallel to the Commission on Higher Education memorandum order 46, Wesleyan University – Philippines is gearing up for curricular and facilities upgrades at par with the standards of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.

CMO 46, titled “Policy Standard to Enhance Quality Assurance (QA) in Philippine Higher Education through and Outcomes-based and Typologybased QA,” aims to improve the quality of graduates by setting quality assurance standards.

to private and public higher education institutions (HEI’s) is issued to enhance the quality assurance system of Philippine tertiary education through learning competency based standards and an outcomes-based system of quality assurance that is differentiated by type of HEI.

Quality assurance, as defined by the order, is “an ongoing process of evaluating and enhancing the quality of the higher education system, institution, or program to assure stakeholders that acceptable standards of education, scholarships and resources for delivery are being maintained.”

The order requires all HEIs to be under a standard “outcomes-based” and “typology-based” quality assurance scheme, which is entirely different from the individual measures of quality assurance of HEIs at present.

This was the statement of the Vice President for Academic Affairs (VPAA) and Finance Committee Chair Dr. Estrella Buenaventura as she cleared out matters on removing the contingency fund in university financial operations.

According to the memorandum signed by the commission’s Chairperson

In the same occasion, which was part of a Methodist divine service, newly appointed university officials took to the center stage of the auditorium for their consecration.

Aside from the reading of appointments of officials of the university, President Aniag also delivered a message after the symbolic washing of the feet which he himself did to some Wesleyanians who represented the different sectors of the WUP community.

Aniag stated that the university is standing still and it will maintain its autonomous status. ‘Naahon na sa pagdarahop at paghihikahos’ were the words Aniag used to describe the present state of the university.

by John Paul Dizon The Supreme Student Council (SSC) sought the help of the city government to raise awareness on cigarette smoking as part of their campaign at the university main gate last August 22.

Due to the ineffectiveness of the previous strategy – posters containing warnings on smoking advertised around the campus - SSC now came up with the idea of using video presentations reinforcing the campaign.

Video clips played by the officers containing images of people suffering from different diseases like cancer, stroke, heart attack, asthma, blindness and other illnesses smokers may get caught the attention of the students walking around the area.

This was after the Commission on

Higher Education (CHED) issued stricter rules on smoking within the university premises, as pursuit to Republic Act No. 9211, CHED Memorandum Order No. 63, 2007, City Ordinance no. 029-2012 and the University Student handbook.

Under the rules, visitors, students, employees and store owners in and outside the campus are directed not to smoke and not to sell cigarette within 100 meters of the school perimeter.

The memorandum, strictly implemented by the Office of the Students Affairs (OSA), detailed that smoking is absolutely prohibited in public places such as playschools, preparatory schools, elementary schools, high schools, colleges and universities, youth hostels and recreational facilities for persons under eighteen (18) years old.

As to cigarette selling, SSC coordinates

with the local government and City Health Office for assistance to ban vendors around the university from distributing Tobacco products.

Hence, the City hall remains missing in action and has no response regarding on the request filed by university SSC. The council is still looking forward for their next step as for they need additional assistance coming from the authorities. As the College of Engineering Representative Renz Oliver Limuncao said, they still have no update from the city hall.

“Nung nagpass naman kami ng ordinansa sa Barangay hall [Mabini Extension], naramdaman agad namin na parang ‘di sila pabor na ipag-bawal na talaga yung paninigarilyo dahil mismong mga opisyales kabilang na ‘yung barangay captain ay naninigarilyo.” he added.

Buwan ng Wika ‘14 reels off “Alamin ang tunay na niloloob ng ating wika at gamitin ito”.

This was the message of Alexander Angeles, guest speaker, during the opening program last August 20 at the university auditorium of the celebration of this year’s Buwan ng Wika.

In the light of the theme “FILIPINO: Wika ng Pagkakaisa”, Angeles said that Filipinos must use the national language as often as President Benigno Simeon Aquino III’s use it in his annual State of the Nation Addresses.

Santos revealed the SSC’s upcoming projects and plans, highlighting the antivices campaign. She disclosed that the council has already coordinated with the City Health Office and its representatives

are currently on their visits to the stores surrounding the university purposely to warn the vendors of the prohibited goods being sold.

“Nagbabalak kami sa second semester, if possible, ang second ‘BuhayEskwela’.

Ang magiging theme naming doon is anti-vices. Hindi pa namin sure kung sino ‘yung mga target participants namin, kung first year pa rin or higher years na,” she added.

She said that they have sustainable programs, including innovative ideas coming from different college local councils and minor organizations which she did not mention.

Meanwhile, when asked how she would rate their over-all performance from 1% to 100%, she declared only 40%.

“Kasi ‘yung 60%, ang laki-laki pa nung kailangan naming habulin para magkaroon ng accomplishment as student leaders. Kailangan pa ng more effort at collaboration with the students,” she assured. é

by Lexter Clemente Wesleyan University – Philippines Junior Philippine Institute of Accountants (WUP-JPIA) was as declared the 3rd most awarded local chapter in academics during the 18th Regional Mid-Year Convention (RMYC) held at Laoag, Ilocos Norte last September 25-27.

WUP-JPIA ripped a total of 10 awards and took home two championship trophies.

Vhinson Garcia and Catherine Joyce Espineda grabbed the P1 (Practical Accounting 1) Cup and PFRS (Philippine Financial Reporting Standards) Cup championship titles respectively.

Nestor Linsangan, Jr. placed 2nd in the MAS (Management Accounting Services) Cup and Mark Napoleon David owned the 2nd spot in P1 Cup. Espineda and Garcia also won 3rd place in the BLT (Business Law & Taxation) Cup and PFRS Cup respectively.

According to the delegates they wanted to inspire their co-JPIAns who weren’t able to attend the event.

JPIAns also added that they are not just a simple minor organization of CBA but also champions in their chosen field.

The overall results were based on the accumulated points of the winners in every academic competition. é

The Political Science Society made an innovation after their request to have their own uniform was approved by the Office of Student Affairs last July.

Lead by their officers, the Political Science Society, with the support of their adviser Professor Ferman Lazatin, presented a new uniform design for the students taking the course which favored

According to PolSci Society chancellor Rocel Anjanet Cpaistrano, students taking Political Science were planning to have their own uniforms since last school year.

“We weren’t able to push it through so the first thing I did after I was elected as the new chancellor was to act on it.

We started wearing our uniforms last month,” she said The new uniform will be worn from Monday to Wednesday during school days and whenever they have a seminar or any activity in their parliamentary subjects. It will also be their prescribed uniform during their practicum.

They were instructed to wear the official university uniform as prescribed on the student manual during Thursdays.

On their letter, the PolSci Society indicated that they see the innovation as a way for Bachelor of Arts start-ups to notice them and a way to encourage the students to take the PolScie course.

“Uniforms serve as our identity, something that would make us recognizable in a swarm of people,” Capistrano concluded. é

SSC draws flak on 100th day... from P1 Business and Accountancy conveyed her appreciation to the effort exerted by SSC for the betterment of the university.

She pointed out that the existence of the council is beneficial to all the students in the university.

“Nararamdaman ko naman po ‘yung suporta nila sa mga students. Tulad po ng seminar on ‘Cheaters are Losers’, sila po ‘yung may project nun,” Manlutac said.

She added that SSC has just started and maybe the council members are still in the ‘adjustment phase’ of their headship.

But she looks forward to the time when the current management will transcend the performance of the past council.

A student from the College of Arts and Sciences confessed that he did not know any member of SSC. He did not even know that there was a SSC because he was not able to vote during the election.

A College of Nursing and Allied Medical Sciences student said, “Wala

akong kilala sa SSC. Kulang po sila sa pagpapakilala. Ngayon, hindi ako makapag-conclude kung naramdaman ko na ba sila o hindi pa kasi sobrang aga pa.

Marami pang time para i-prove nila ‘yung sarili nila.”

Regarding this, SSC President Vilma Joy Santos admitted that some students may sense their presence, and some may not recognize them and the effort they exerted to execute their jobs.

“Siguro challenge sa amin yung mga estudyanteng hindi nakakaramdam. Ang message ko sa kanila, makiisa rin sila sa mga concerns kasi meron talagang mga students na hindi nakakaramdam kung hindi nila pipiliin na maramdaman,” She concluded.

Increase library, energy fees – Chief Librarian CBA Dean withdraws lifeline for BS Accty

Despite the Php 803.22 paid by college students for library access, chief librarian Carmelita Tiglao claimed that funds are still insufficient and that there should be an increase of the library fee.

When asked regarding the student injunction to recharge power for mobile devices, particularly laptops, Tiglao said that the library fee should include an additional energy fee should students be allowed to access power outlets in the library.

All power outlets in the library are either covered in masking tape to ban students from recharging devices or restricted to supply power for electric fans in the facility. Air conditioning units are activated at exactly 9AM and are shut down at 4PM as per administrative rule.

According to Tiglao, the university library offers orientation, instruction, and readers’ advising service to students of all levels. She also took pride of the software that the library utilizes in accessing books instead of the traditional library card.

Tiglao said that library handbooks are printed and given every year during orientations. According to her, there are about 4000 copies of the library handbook printed despite student complaints that they have not received handbooks.

She also claimed that freshmen and transferees are given but some students secure several copies of library handbooks and more than once.

The university librarian also explained that books are now to be borrowed overnight instead of the maximum thirty day use of books to avoid loss and damage.

According to accession record of the university library, there are 593 new acquisitions out of 53,149 books as of August 12. Tiglao estimated that the high school library has about 15000 acquisitions, the elementary library with 15000, graduate school library packed with 7500 books, while the Center for Child Development with 2200 titles.

Tiglao claimed that new books are in the reserved section and are chosen via deliberation of selected instructors and professors. The titles in all of the libraries in the university have an at least five-year copyright published on and between the years 2009-2014.

However, Tiglao claimed that old books are discarded and that a storage for such is present. Some books also end up for raffle and some are donated to elementary schools around Nueva Ecija as community outreach programs.

Tiglao also said that the university library receives donations from Ateneo de Manila University Library, the National Library, and the Quezon City Library.

Meanwhile, regarding the Multimedia Center also under the University Librarian, Tiglao clarified that professors can use the audiovisual rooms for an unlimited number of hours for respective subjects as long as they have presented an official request. However, ten hours for each instructor are allowed for unrequested sessions. Tiglao claimed that some exceed the recommended unrequested ten-hour quota.

As of press time, the university library accommodates three AVRs for academic sessions of the College of Business and Accountancy. é

Gym undergoes renovation, to be airconditioned soon

by Coleen Sapongco Wesleyan University – Philippines gymnasium is now under a minor renovation, started August 20, including the installation of the air-conditioning units.

This project is the answer of the adminstration to the Wesleyanian’s exclaim about the too much heat inside the University gym especially during programs and to modernize its look since 1980.

According to General Services Department Head Engr. Crizaldo Vicencio, renovation of the gymnasium was in 4-segment.

The first segment is the exterior, roof and windows as preparation for airconditioning.

Second is the comfort and shower rooms to make it more presentable

especially for the visitors. Third is the court or the interior.

“Babawasan yung benches sa likod, one space puputulan. Para lumuwang yung area sa gitna. Para pag may activity mas malaki yung magagamit.” Vicencio explained.

The fourth is to air-condition the gymnasium with three ducted type 30 tunner air-con.

“Yung tulad sa mall, malalaki. Kung yung 2,000 lang ang pupunta jan, e hindi pa maiinitan yun.” He said.

The estimated expenses for the major renovation is about 35-50 million pesos although it won’t reach P15-M for it is just a minor renovation.

The excess budget will be alloted to the volleyball court at the university grounds and the PE rooms to be situated at the motorpool instead. é

MedTech pioneers attain 100% passing rate

At bilang nanay nila dito sa Wesleyan, alam kong sinusunod nila lahat ng payo ko dahil para sa kanila din ‘yun,” Wesleyan UniversityPhilippines Medical Technology Program Head Grace Bacalso proudly stated after the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) announced the September 2014 Medical Technology Licensure Examination results.

As a preparation for the 2014 MTLE, the 27 students of the batch took Mock board exams last February as a basis

of the WU-P program coordinator to determine the students who are capable and ready to take the licensure exam. The mock board exam includes the subjects such as Haematology & Immunology, Serology, Blood Banking, Microbiology & Parasitology, Clinical Microscopy, Clinical Chemistry, Medtech laws and Histopathologic techniques.

“We (the graduates) began to review (at Top One Review Masters) 2 months before the MTLE board exams. We didn’t take the regular review sessions, instead, we enrolled at intensive coaching.” Mark Dave B. Diamat, one of the board passers,

stated.

The other 13 graduates will be taking the MTLE on March 2015.

“Above all, Prayer has been our greatest weapon.” Diamat said.

The MTLE 2014 took place at the University of East and Manuel L. Quezon University last September 13 & 14, 2014.

Registration for the issuance of Professional ID and Certificate of Registration was issued by the PRC last September 29 and 30, 2014 and board passers personally attended to register and to sign in the roster of Registered Professionals. é

‘University gates regulations remain unchanged’ - Tiglao

According to the people in the area especially the students of Wesleyan University-Philippines the dormitories and residences in Magsaysay Sur are now more accessible.

Entrepreneurs located in the area are also happy with the development. This development brought positive results to their operations.

“Nung sinara po ‘yung gate, lumiit ‘yung income namin tapos around September po napansin namin na bukas na siya kung lunch break” Chloes’ canteen owner said.

Dr. Antonio Tiglao, head of security in the university, said that there is no other change in the schedule of the gates.

“Wala namang pinagbago ‘yun pa rin ‘yung schedule ng gates.” Tiglao said. é

As of press time, the College of Business & Accountancy (CBA) proposed the revision of their policy on retentions for BS Accountancy program wherein students may repeat a subject as many times as they prefer providing their grades will not fall under 75 percent.

Prior to the proposal, BSA students follow a retention policy wherein they should not have grades lower than 2.50 or 81 in all professional subjects.

If the student unfortunately acquired a grade of 2.75-3.0, he may retake a subject for a maximum of 3 times in order to get a grade of 2.50 or higher.

This agreement was signed by the students upon their enrolment during their first years.

The retention policy remains unchanged but the students will be allowed to repeat the subject with no maximum number of retakes until they get a grade of 2.5 or higher to stay in the program.

In addition to this, BSA student should not have a failing grade. If they do, they will be obliged to shift into a different course.

According to CBA Dean Dr. Maria Victoria C. Mones, students may be able to retake the subject right after the semester of non-compliance to the policy but a minimum of 30 students is required for the subject to be offered.

If the number of students doesn’t meet the requirement, students shall wait for the regular course offering.

“Buti na lang ginawa yang policy na ‘yan para magkaroon pa rin kami ng chance para maipagpatuloy ay Accountancy. Kasi kahit ilang beses ko pa ‘yun ulitin, gagawin ko kasi gusto ko talagang maging CPA balang araw pero ang hirap pa rin kasi dahil papano yung paulo-ulit na hindi ka pa rin makapasa,” 2nd year BSA student said.

Meanwhile, BS Accoutning Technology [BSAcT] graduates last school year [2013-2014] are reacting upon the changes saying that their course will be rare in the accounting industry since they are only offering the BSAcT program for extended BSA students.

“Hindi naman magiging rare ‘yung course nila. We are giving opportunities for them to pursue the BSA program since ang goal pa rin naman ay maging CPA someday” Mones said in an interview.

The new policy will be effective this 2nd semester this school year. é

4 new CPAs spark 44.4% passing rate

Wesleyan University-Philippines produced four new Certified Public Accountants in the July 2014 Licensure Examination earning a passing rate of 44.44% exceeding the national passing rate of 19.98%.

According to the Professional Regulations Commission (PRC), only 1,107 out of 5,540 passed the CPA Licensure Examination.

Out of the 4 WU-P passers, one is a fresh graduate while others are conditional examinees from pervious examinations. é

With its aim to maintain ihe current status, Wesleyan University-Philippines still holds autonomy as a university.

This was announced by the university president Pacifico B. Aniag in the academic council meeting on September 22 after WU-P surpassed the test for Institutional Accreditation status conducted by Philippine Association

of Christian Schools, Colleges and Universities (PACSCU-AAI) kindling high hopes in maintaining university status.

Meanwhile, Dr. Apolinar Alfonso, Director of Quality Assurance Office, said that the university is still waiting for the result of its application for vertical typology and horizontal typology to the Commission on Higher Education.

its best to ensure that the university would comply with national and international standards and national legislations in basic and higher education.

CHED’s vertical typology classifies institutions as autonomous, deregulated and regulated. Wesleyan UniversityPhilippines is applying for autonomy.

Lucas also added that the insatallation of the faster university-wide Local Area Network is to assure the faster and much easier transmission of data from the CCTV cameras to the main server.

Dubbed “Sandiwa: Literatura, Sining at Kultura—3rd Kathang Metapora”, the event was attended by high school and college campus journalists in Nueva Ecija.

Lectures on Short Story/Fiction, Poetry, Essay, News, Photojournalism, and Literary Graphics were delivered

by Eros Atalia, Mark Angeles, Julie Ann Luna, Ramon Valmonte, and Ronald Castillo, respectively.

Atalia—writer of contemporary Filipino books—and Angeles—a Filipino poet—are both Don Carlos Palanca Memorial Awardees for Literature. Luna is a Gawad Emman Lacaba Awardee for Essay Writing. Valmonte received the Outstanding Novo Ecijano award for journalism from President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo last 2005. Castillo is a Licensed Financial Advisor and owns an art business.

The 3rd Kathang Metapora was divided into high school and college divisions and were composed of four categories: essay writing, poetry writing short story writing, and photojournalism. Speakers for the same categories were the judges of the competition.

The event was held in partnership with the College Editors Guild of the Philippines-Nueva Ecija Chapter. é

In a survey conducted by Genre, six out of 10 students said no to the CMO No. 20, s. of 2013.

The five WU-P students of Team Apollo won against UP- Manila’s “Sandigan” which focuses on medical missions, and UP- Diliman’s “Gordian” who aims to teach the constituents how to make toys.

Team Apollo’s project is to sell the “Apollo Flipcase”, an equipment which can charge smart-phones by the use of solar energy by putting the phone above the flipcase.

The winning team’s project will be done to the constituent barangay, “Sitio Bakal” and because Team Apollo won, they will do their project, the funding of the building of solar panels on Sitio Bakal from a percentage of their earnings from selling the Apollo Flipcase. ”Team Apollo” were named after their project the “Apollo Flipcase”. The six fifth year Electronics and Communications Engineering students were Jayson Paul V. Vicencio, Regine S. Tamayo, Aecil M. Trinidad, Chrislean Emmanuel S. Galang, Richard P. Avila and their team leader Karlo D. Martin.

They were supervised by their coaches, Engr. Harry Bert G. Rolle and Engr. Leo M. Ramos The team scored 100 points against the champion Collegio de Dagupan (CDD) who got 105 points along with the second placer SLU who made 90 points.

Paradigm Shift a

CHED strongly advocates shift from teaching- or instruction-centered

paradigm in higher education to one that is learner- or student-centered.

A learner or student centered paradigm in higher education entails a shift from a more input-oriented curricular design on the description of course content, to outcomes-based education. In this case, students are made aware of what they ought to know, understand and be able to do after completing a unit of study.

Teaching and assessment are subsequently geared towards the acquisition of appropriate knowledge and skills and the building of student competencies. Teachers remain crucial to the learning process as facilitators while laboratories and other facilities for specific disciplines are likewise important as they create the environment and shape the learning experience of the students.

However, the focus of attention shifts to students and the process that will enable the development and assessment of their learning competencies as defined by disciplinal and multi-disciplinal communities of scholars and professional practitioners.

National Situation

It may be recalled that CHED granted WU-P an extension of autonomy until December 31, 2014. CHED bestowed autonomy to the university on March 11, 2009 supposedly effective until March 30, 2014.

Last September 22, University President announced that WU-P surpassed institutional assessment conducted by the Philippine Association of Christian Schools, Colleges and Universities (PACSCU-AAI) assuring the security of the university status. é

Nakabaon ngayon sa hukay ang kalahating paa ng lahing Pilipino at ang kinabukasan ng libu-libong mamamayan ng bansa sa panukalang Komisyon sa Mas Mataas na Edukasyon (CHED) ukol sa pagtatanggal ng asignaturang Filipino sa bagong kurikulum ng kolehiyo – isang hakbang na lilipol sa ilaw at lakas ng Pilipinas tungo sa tuwid na landas.

Hindi katanggap-tanggap ang sistemang hatid ng CHED Memorandum Order (CMO) No. 20, series of 2013 para sa edukasyon ng mga Pilipino. Ang naturang talaan ng kautusan ay naglalaman ng ilang pagbabago sa General Education Curriculum (GEC) sa ngalan ng College Readiness Standards ng komisyon para sa implementasyon ng K+12. Kalakip nito ay ang pagbabago sa general education na binubuo na lamang ngayon ng 36 yunits mula sa 63 at 51 yunits para sa ibang majors – bagay na magtatanggal sa asignaturang Filipino sa kolehiyo.

Dahil maraming magiging biktima ang eksperimentong ito ng CHED, inuulan ito ngayon ng mga batikos ng mga propesyonal mula sa sektor ng edukasyon.

Kasabay ng kanilang panawagan na ibasura ang panutong ito, iginigiit nila ang kahalagahan ng Filipino sa mas mabisang pag-aaral ng mga estudyante, sa mga gurong nagtatrabaho at sa bansa mismo. Reklamo nila, malimit na nga lang magamit ang Filipino sa pagtuturo ay nais pang bakbakin sa kurikulum.

Subalit pinabulaanan ito ng komisyon sa pagdedepensa ng hindi lamang ang mga kurso sa Filipino ang matatapyas mula sa 27/51 na mababawas sa GEC. Kasama rin dito umano ang English, Literature, Math, Humanities, Natural Sciences at Social Sciences na pawang ituturo sa bagong kurikulum ng K+12. Wala rin umanong dapat ipangamba ang higit-kumulang 10,000 permanenteng guro na maaaring mawalan ng trabaho dahil kasalukuyan umano nilang inaayos ang mga kalalagyan nito.

Nguni’t sa kabila ng nakikitang solusyon ng CHED, tunay na hindi pa rin ito dahilan upang tuluyang baklasin ang asigntaurang Filipino sa kolehiyo. Kung ang pagsasaayos ng mababang kalidad ng edukasyon ang itinuturong sanhi, hindi pa rin ito ang wasto at pinakamagandang magagawa ng komsiyon para mapagbuti ang sistema.

Kalidad ang may diperensya at hindi ang sistema. Kaya kung ipagpapatuloy ng CHED ang kanilang gusto, lalo lamang lalala ang sakit ng edukasyon sa bansa.

Hindi ang pagtanggal sa asignaturang Filipino alinsunod sa alituntunin ng K+12 ang solusyon, bagkus ang pagpapabuti mismo ng kalidad ng edukasyon para sa kapakinabanagan ng lahat ng mga mag-aaral.

Marahil tama ang hangarin ng komisyon na bawasan ang paghihirap ng mga estudyante pagdating ng kolehiyo subalit mas maraming suliranin lamang ang idudulot nito. Sa halip na makatulong, malaki ang posibildad na maging pasan ng krus lang din ito.

Kung tuluyang maipatutupad ang kautusan ng CHED, tuluyan na ring mamamatay ang naghihingalong estado ng wikang Filipino bilang wikang pambansa. Kaakibat nito, tuluyan na ring mapupundi ang tanglaw patungo sa ipinangako ni P-Noy na tuwid na landas at ang kabuuang lakas ng mga Pilipino bilang isang lahi.

Ang wikang Filipino ay ang salamin at ang tunay na sandata ng Pilipinas. Ito ang nagbubuklod sa lahat ng mga Pilipino upang magkaisa at magkaintindihan sa iisang hangarin. Kung hahayaan lamang na tuluyang maihatid ito sa huling hantungan, guguho ang moog na nagpapatibay sa soberanya ng bansa.

Base sa isang pagsusuri na ginawa sa Wesleyan University-Philippines (WU-P), anim kada 10 mag-aaral ang sumasalungat na tanggalin ang asignaturang Filipino.

Ito ay nangangahulugan na kahit hindi nila ito lubos na kailangan sa kanilang propesyon, mahalaga pa rin sa kanila ang nasabing asignatura at ang pambansang wika.

Samakatuwid, nangangahulugan rin na kailangang manatiling buhay sa kolehiyo ang asignaturang Filipino dahil kailangan ito ng mga estudyante. At dahil kailangan nila ito, kailangan ring pag-ibayuhin ang laban para dito.

Isang malaking kamangmangan para sa lahi kung mamatay nang walang kalaban-laban ang pagtuturo ng asignaturang Filipino sa kolehiyo. Ito ay katulad lamang ng paralisadong sundalo na hindi nagawang ipagtanggol ang kanyang bayan.

Subalit kung mismong ang pamahalaan ang magiging balakid upang tuluyang mamatay ang pag-asa na maipagpatuloy ang pagtuturo ng Filipino sa kolehiyo, walang kapakinabangang matatamo ang samabayanang Pilipino. Ito ay patunay lamang na hinahayaan ng CHED at ni P-Noy na lamunin ng globalisasyon ang Pilipinas kasabay ng unti-unting pag-iral ng kolonyal na edukasyon sa bansa.

Ibig sabihin, ang komisyon at ang administrasyon ng pangulo ay ang tunay na nangangamoy na malansang isda.

Sa halip na magsayang ng oras at pagod sa reporma sa sistemang eduaksyon, bakit hindi na lamang pagtuunan ng pansin ang pagkukumpuni sa nasisirang kalidad nito?

Dito sa WU-P, ito ang nakikitang solusyon ng maraming estudyanteng naninindigan para sa patuloy na pagtuturo ng asigntaurang Filipino sa kolehiyo.

Makabuluhan kung magiging konkretong aksyon ang panukala nilang gawing mas interesado ang paraan ng pagtuturo hindi lamang sa Filipino, kundi maging sa lahat ng asignatura.

Ang pagpapabuti ng anumang makalumang gawi ng edukasyon ay mas mainam kaysa sa hindi makatarungang pagtatanggal sa pag-aaral sa wikang pambansa.

Ang pagtanggal sa asignaturang Filipino sa bagong GEC alinsunod sa kautusan ng CHED ay isang malaking isyu ng moralidad – isang pagtataksil sa kinukunsinting pagkamatay ng dignidad ng lahing Pilipino sa ngalan ng pwersang pagpapaganda ng kolonyal na edukasyon.

Kung babasahin o binabasa man ninyo ang mga nauna kong naisulat, marahil alam niyo na ang aking istilong pagsulat.

Hulaan niyo na lang kung tungkol saan at kung bakit ko isinasaad ang mga sumusunod.

Alam na natin lahat ang proseso ng halalan sa ating bansa, nais ko lamang na muling ipaalam sa inyo ang mga hakbang na ito. Ang hakbang sa unti-unting paglukob sa atin ng mga magagaling at walang kakupas-kupas na mga pulitiko.

Sa pagkumpirma ng pagka-kandidato.

Ipapakita ko sa inyong lahat ang suma total ng lahat ng aking magagandang ginagawa upang payagan akong tumakbo sadarating na eleksyon at itatago ko lahat ng baho kong hindi dapat na mangamoy.

Kamag-anak system? O pati na rin ang kasaysayan ng mga lalaban (kung mayroon mang maganda). Ang hirap kasi sa karamihan sa atin, nagpapabulag tayo sa nagniningning na ngiti ng mga kandidato. Walang kadala-dala. Patuloy tayong nangangarap na sa bawat ngiti nila ay unti-unting matutupad ang ating mga pangarap. Yan tayo eh. Pinoy.

Hindi ko naman nilalahat. Hindi talaga. Promise. ‘Wag kang assuming masasaktan kang sobra.

Sa katunayan nga, minsan ginagawa nating obligasyon ang pag-boto at hindi man lang natin inisip na ito ay isang responsibilidad. Mayroon tayong karapatang bumoto o hindi bumoto.

Huwag tayong magpaka-bulag dahil gusto lang nating maranasan ang Automated Elections.

Nganga. Lahat ng naging tagasuporta ng lahat ng mga kandidato ay ngayo’y nagsisilbing pinaka-marahas na kritiko ng mga ito. Patuloy nating sinisisi sagobyerno ang lahat ng paghihirap ng ating mga kababayan. Patuloy na dumarami ang nag-aaklas o ‘di kaya’y nawawalan ng pag-asa sa ating bansa.

Sino nga ba ang dapat sisihin?

Manghingi na lamang kayo ng rubber boats. Baka sakaling palutangin kayo ng mga ito sa pagkalunod sa minsang kinasadlakan na pagiging mang-mang.

Ano? May napansin ka bang kakaiba?

Tandaan mo. Nasa iyong mga kamay ngayon ang pagbabagong nais mo sa bansa. Hindi porket responsibilidad mo ang bumoto ay gagawin mo na itong obligasyon. ang bentilador ng mga pampublikong paaralan. Marahil ay kulang daw kasi sa budget. Marahil ay dahil daw sa ganito at ganyan. Kung sa bagay, mas maganda raw kasi talaga ang ating mga pasilidad kung ikukumpara sa ibang paaralan.

Ikalawa, may iilan rin akong naririnig na hinaing ng estudyante tungkol sa ‘fees’ na hindi nila nasusulit o ang masaklap, hindi nagagamit nang maayos. Paminsanminsan, naiisip ko na kasalanan kasi ng estudyante na hindi gamitin ang kanyang binayaran. Hindi kasi nila alam kung ano ang saklaw na kanilang binabayaran.

Karamihan sa mga estudyante ngayon ay wala naman talagang pakialam sa mga ganoong bagay.

Sa kabilang banda, paano naman yung mga mag-aaral na pupunta sa library pero hindi makahiram ng aklat?

Dahil ba iyon sa iisa lang ang kopya ng libro na iyon o may oras ng paglalabas ng libro? Paano yung mga first year na umaga ang klase? Kailangan pa ba nilang

magpaabot ng alas-singko ng hapon para lamang magamit ang serbisyo na kanilang binayaran? Kung sa bagay, ang sasabihin rin naman ng karamihan sa atin ay mas mabuti pang mag-internet na lang kaysa magbuklat pa ng libro. Sayang naman.

Ikatlo, pag-usapin natin ang patuloy na pagkakasakit hindi lamang ng mga estudyante ngunit ng iilan rin sa ating mga empleyado. Nariyan pa rin ang mga guro na laging huli sa klase at hindi pa rin nawawala ang mga professors na tamad magturo. May iilan namang staff na nawawala dahil diumano sa gawaing pansimbahan o kaya ay hindi pangkaraniwang sakit, ang sakit ng pagkawala sa opisina sa oras ng trabaho.

Bilang bahagi ng isang Kristiyanong institusyon, hindi ba’t kasama rin sa mga katangian na dapat nating ipakita ay ang pagiging responsableng manggagawa?

Dahil hindi lamang sa simbahan nakatuon ang ugaling Kristiyano, nakikita ito sa lahat ng aspeto, maging sa trabaho.

Kung iisa-isahin pa natin ang sakit sa lipunan ng ating paaralan, malamang ay hindi sasapat ang mga pahina ng pahayagang ito sa dami ng dapat ilagay.

Kung sa bagay, hindi na dapat pang ungkatin kung ano man ang sakit bagkus ay magtuon na lamang tayo sa kung ano ang gamot dito. Ngunit, ano nga ba ang gamot? Nabibili ba ito sa suking tindahan?

Hindi, dahil nasa atin ang lunas. Ang gamot ay itama ang mali. Una, ayusin ang pasilidad sapagkat nagbabayad tayo para sa ikauunlad ng pamantasan. Kailangan nating bigyang kahalagahan ang bagay na ito sapagkat ito ang lunas nang sa gayon kapag tinanong na natin kung nasaan na si Wesley, papalapit na siya sa finish line.

Hindi rin lahat ng kasalanan o pagkukulang ay nasa unibersidad di ba?! Wag kang OA, tingnan mo muna kung nagagampanan mo ang tungkulin bilang isang estudyante at hindi lang ang simpleng mag-aral.

Siguro nga matanda na ako kaya marami na akong napapansin sa ating unibersidad. Well, hindi naman puro pangit na bagay ang napapansin ko.

Saludo rin ako sa mga matatandang professor na nagpa-part time sa Wesleyan na daig pa ang mga regular na professor sa pagsisilbi sa unibersidad.

Isang pagpupugay sa mga maituturing na bayani at tumayong haligi ng unibersidad na ito! Sa ama ng Mass Communication program dito sa Wesleyan, sa mga GenEd professors na nagtityaga sa mga katulad naming estudyante, salamat sa inyo! Sana ay maulanan kayo at dumami pa ang mga katulad nyo. Siguro nga ay isa kami sa maituturing na kritiko ng unibersidad na ito pero sa kabilang banda, nakikita rin namin kayo. Ako, bilang kabahagi ng publikasyon na ito ay nagpapasalamat sa inyo.

Maging sa mga hindi ordinaryong estudyanteng nagsisilbi sa paglalaan ng kanilang oras at talento, “guys, your labor is not in vain”. Kapit lang tayo, sa mga pagsisilbi natin, meron at mayroon ding nakakapansin ng ating ginagawa.

Maaaring sabihin ng Wesleyan na may mga bagay pa silang pinagtutuunan ng pansin na mas mahalaga kaysa rito na para rin naman sa kapakanan ng mga estudyante pero hindi ba mas maganda kung matugunan muna yung mga simpleng bagay na ganito bago tumungo sa mga mas malalaking problema.

Sa tanda ng institusyong ito bakit hindi man lang naayos yung mga simpleng bagay?

Handa kaming mga estudyanteng makipagtulungan para sa ikauunlad ng institusyong ito dahil itinuring na naming itong ikalawang tahanan. Mas mainam nang punahin ang pagkakamali kaysa hayaang na lang itong lumala.

Huwag naman sanang masamain ito pero siguro kailangang tapusin ang nakaugaliang sistema. Sa huli ang mamimili at tindera rin naman ang tutulong para lumago ang ekonomiya ng palengke.

Wesleyanians! are you ready for the second wave of the Wesleyan Most Wanted? The long wait is over as we give you the list of your most favorite Movies, Books and Albums for the months August & September.

#TheMazeRunner This reminds me of no less than the very popular app, Temple Run. It’s like watching a film version of the app.

Yeah, seriously. Only, though, the film has of course a story. And, the film is an adaptation of James Dashner’s novel of the same name.

Basically it’s about a group of youths who were dumped at some place—a maze—finding their ways out. They have no memories of their previous life whatsoever. Thomas (Dylan O’brien), arrives in a glade at the center of a giant labyrinth. He becomes a part of the group, and eventually acquired the Runner status—those who patrol the maze finding a possible

escape route. Together with Teresa (Kaya Scodelario), the only female, Thomas tries to convince his group that he, actually, knows a way out.

Having not read the book, I was hoping for a more satisfying payoff than the one I got. Then again, maybe the filmmakers are saving the answers for the sequel. And besides, I’m not much into sci-fi... although such movies do make a point. However, The Maze Runner is just like a slightly different version of Hunger Games; both stories have one main purpose: survival. Nevertheless, visually wise, the film was so-so. The actors need improvement. But it’s fine, generally. The kids will love it.

#MariaLeonoraTeresa Ever heard of Guy and Pip’s doll? Some of you might have, some might have not. But no, this is not a film that stars Tirso Cruz III and Nora Aunor.

The movie was just named after the love team’s doll, Maria Leonora Teresa.

This is a Wenn DeRamas horror-suspense-drama film, starring the surprisingly hit trio of Zanjoe Marudo, Iza Calzado, and Jodi Sta. Maria. After a tragic field trip incident, three parents Faith (Calzado). Julio (Marudo), and Stella (Sta. Maria)

mourned hard over the deaths of their daughters— Maria, Leonora, Teresa—respectively. To help them move on and cope with their loss, Dr. Manolo Apacible (played by Cris Villanueva), a psychiatrist, gave them life-sized dolls for them to look after.

The situation only worsens, though, when the dolls start moving as though they were alive. Yeah, those creepy dumidilat and umiiyak stuff.

Wanna get chills? Goosebumps, maybe? Go watch. No one’s stopping you.

Furious, she comes onto one of the guys to fight just like a palaban friend would do, not knowing that the guy, TOP (Reid), was indeed—a gang leader. But the thing is—her friends do not actually know the guys.

They were The Crazy Trios, so yes, they were just having fun. Making fun, rather.

Eventually Samantha and TOP fell in love with each other, so on and so forth with the gang fights and such, but then there’s always got to be a conflict in every story, so yes—Samantha was engaged to Red (Marco), TOP’s best friend. (Whut?)

I’d be straightforward here, and no—I would not recommend you to watch the film. Unless you’re a JaDine fan, of course.

You know what it is. Basically, the book encompasses a woman with an internal crisis, satisfying her whim, peppered with some porn, and Paulo Coelho’s preaching.

As a Coelho die-hard fan, I was disappointed. Not because the book is that bad, but because the book is just…flat. Maybe because I’m still hung up on The Alchemist’s breathtaking allure, and Veronika Decides to Die’s beautifully written storyline. Nevertheless, read it. Won’t hurt to try.

Wesleyan Corner Vamonos! It’s a Dora-like adventure. Let’s go!

You might be on your first year as a college student or you might be on your last year as a student here in Wesleyan. But before anything happens or before you leave the university rather, here are some facts that you may not know about edifices around the university grounds.

Administration building Two years passed until this building was finally established in the year 1992 on the administration of Dr. Gloria Lacson. The administration building serves as the home of main offices of the university.

On the opening of College of Criminal Justice Education, the building was reconstructed by establishing its roof top to be the home of the college.

At present, this four-storey structure has been the ‘most wanted’ building of students who seek service from the university. It is the home of ART Offices which stands for Accounting, Registrar and Treasury.

Mañacop Building/Academic Building It is not CBA building as CBA students usually say nor it is the CAS building.

Being the home of CAS and College of Business and Accountancy, this four-storey edifice is dedicated to the first executive dean and second president of the erstwhile Philippine Wesleyan College, Rev. Carlos Mañacop, Sr. The building has also been the dwelling point of Mass Communication Laboratory, DWUP FM Extension Studio, CAS History Room, powder room and Office of Civil Welfare Training Service (CWTS).

Computer studies building Being the largest building in the university, computer studies served as the home of various colleges and offices. Dedicated on November 30, 1996, the first floor of the building is called as Dionisio Alejandro Hall.

The building originally consists of 4 levels, but due to an increase in the number of students, the rooftop was extended to be the fifth floor of the structure.

At present, the building serves not only as the home of CCS but also it became the extension classroom for College of Business and Accountancy, College of Engineering and College of Nursing and Allied Medical Sciences. It is also the home of university clinic, WUPFSA office, Office of Student Affairs, Office of Central Student Media, Supreme Student Council and Sports, Athletics and Fitness Department, Fitness Gym and main studio of DWUP FM. Your rooftop experience in this building will give you not only a pleasant view in the campus but also scenery of the city proper.

University Gymnasium/ sports & Cultural center This structure located beside the administration building is called the Sports and Cultural Center.

This gymnasium is intended to accommodate various university events and to serve as a classroom for Physical Education (PE) subjects.

Currently, the building is undergoing renovation where air conditioners will be added to give students a pleasant atmosphere during their stay in this facility.

Millenium Building On the start on the new millennium, the administration of the university inaugurated this three-storey building on December 6, 2000 upon the management of Dr. Zenaida Lumba.

The building is intended to be the venue of university food court, College of Hotel, Restaurant and Institution Management and Graduate School. It is composed of Dr. Avelina Soto Hall in its second floor and Dr. Roxy Lefforge Hall in its third floor. The name was coined as a dedication to the former administrators of the university.

Due to the continuous growing population of CHRIM, the food court was relocated in tree houses before it was permanently moved on its new site adjacent to the building.

Aside from being an academic edifice, university amphitheater is also found in this building where it can serve about 150 persons in different activities.

University food court Lying in front of its former location, the structure was created to give students a pleasurable service while they are taking their lunch or eating something else.

This building was inaugurated by Prof. Manuel Palomo last November 2010. The 6 stalls and different food carts will give you varieties of foods you can eat anytime.

Upon its establishment, some issues had raised students’ concern regarding the cost of the project which was allegedly declared P20 million pesos.

Aside from being the food capital of the university, it is also the house of commissary (the university grocery) and executive lounge which can be a venue for different school activities. The building also became the temporary site of Guidance and Placement Office.

EZE Building This three-storey structure stands adjacent to the university chapel and beside the Mañacop Building. It was named after Evangelische Zentralstell for Entwicklunshulfe also known as the Central Agency for Development of Federal Republic of Germany.

The building was erected by donation at the time of former university president Dr. Gloria D. Lacson in 1986.

At present, EZE serves as the house of College of Education on first and second floors. The speech laboratory and science laboratories are also found in this structure which is under the control of College of Arts and Sciences (CAS). The building gives you a sheltered ambiance as leaves of acacia trees block the sunrays.

Agriculture building Before it was closed in the year 2005, the building served as the College of Agriculture, one of the oldest buildings at Cushman Campus.

The structure is located just very few steps away from the university food court. The WUP Concert Chorus houses at the building. At present, it also works as the extension classrooms for CHRIM, CBA and CONAMS.

It is not bad to know how to take a trip in an academic institution. The most educational way of making an educational tour is to be familiar in the place that you have been spending so much time every day. Being a Wesleyanian, this is our pride. Have fun! Be cool. aaaring marahil ay unti-unti nang nabubura ang alaala ng kanilang kabayanihan dahil tayo ay lunod na sa kalayaang atin nang tinatamasa, napabayaan na rin ang mga bagay at lugar na nagkaroon ng parte sa ating kasaysayan at hindi maglalaon, sa susunod na henerasyon, ay tuluyan na itong maglaho.

Maraming lugar sa Pilipinas ang nagsilbing alaala sa mga pakikibaka ng mga martir at bayani, at isa na rito ang lalawigan ng Nueva Ecija na siyang isa sa mga naging unang bayan na nag-aklas laban sa mapang-aping kamay ng mga dayuhan mananakop.

“Unang sigaw ng Nueva Ecija” – kung tatanungin ang mga kabataan, marahil Holiday na lamang ang nakakatatak sa kanilang isip. Kung bibigyan natin ng kahalagahan at sasamahan ng pagbibigay atensyon sa nakaraan, ano nga ba ang naimbag ng ating lugar upang ipagdiwang ito taun-taon? Mula sa pinagsama-samang dokumentaryo, sulatin at mga libro, ating gunitain at sariwain ang mga naging ambag ng ating bayan sa makasaysayang pahina ng ating kasaysayan.

Ang isang maliit na bayan dito na hinango sa pangalan ng isang patron at tinawag na “San Isidro” ng mga espanyol ay nagkaroon ng malaking bahagi sa kasaysayan ng Pilipinas. Ang San Isidro ay matatagpuan sa dulong timog ng Nueva Ecija, ito ay naging punong kabisera o provincial capitol ng lalawigan noong 1850 hanggang 1917. Nagmartsa ang mga rebolusyonaryo na nanggaling sa Cabiao patungo sa San isidro upang bigyan ng kalayaan ang mga Pilipinong nabihag sa sarili nilang bayan. Ang lugar na ito ay isa sa mga unang nag aklas laban sa mga espanyol kung kaya’t ang Nueva Ecija ay napabilang sa walong sinag ng araw sa ating pambansang watawat.

Tinawag ang San Isidro na factoria dahil sa malaking ampawan ng Tabako dito. Hindi naging patas para sa mga manggagawa ang naging kalakaran dahil ang dinideposito nilang mga ani sa factoria ay hindi sapat sa kanilang pang araw-araw na pangangailangan at kapag ang kanilang ani ay hindi nakaabot sa kota, sila ay pagbabayarin pa ng multa.

Nagsilbi rin itong kulungan ng mga

Pilipinong lumalaban at tumataliwas sa mga pag-uutos ng mga kastila. Dito pa lamang ay makikinita na kung gaano ang naging hirap ng mga Pilipino sa kamay ng mga mananakop noon.

Nang dumating sa Nueva Ecija ang impormasyon tungkol sa kilusan, madaling naganap ang lihim na pag-anib ng mga miyembro dito dahil na rin sa namuong galit dahil sa pagpapahirap partikular na sa sistemang pinaiiral sa pagkontrol mga manggagawa at mamamayan na siyang nag-aambag ng mga produktong tabako. Ilan sa mga Nobo Esihanong unang umanib sa kilusan ay sina Mariano Llanera, Pantaleon Valmonte, Mamerto Natividad, Epifanio Ramos, Marcos Ventus, Domingo Cecilio at marami pang iba.

Nagmarka ang petsang ikalawa ng Setyembre, taong 1896 kung saan naganap ang paglusob ng mga Pilipino sa pakturya.

Pinangunahan ito nina Pantaleon Valmonte, si Mariano Llanera at anak nitong si Eduardo, Mamerto Natividad, Alipio Tecson at Manuel Tinio. Mula sa batingting ng kampana na nagbabadya ng sigaw ng katarungan, nagtipon-tipon sa simbahan sa Cabiao upang humihingi ng pagpapala, at dito na nagsimula ang pagma-martsa kasabay ang pagtugtog ng banda. Ito ay pinamunuan ni Mariano Llanera. Pinamunuan ni Pantaleon Valmonte ang tropang mula naman sa Gapan. Nagsanib ang dalawang grupo sa Sitio Pulu, limang kilometro ang layo sa San Isidro at nagsimulang lumakad upang lusubin ang garrison ng mga kastila. Inakalang ang pagmartsa na ito ay

pagdiriwang dahil sa masayang tugtugin mula sa banda, hanggang sa makarating sa paktorya, ito ay nagsaliw ng malungkot na tugtugin at nagsimula na ang labanan laban sa dayuhan at mga Pilipino nang magpaputok ng baril si Manolo Ventur bilang hudyat. Ang mga Pilipino ay kulang at nahuhuli sa armas, ngunit sila ay nagtagumpay na pasukin ang pakturya at palayain ang mga tinig at damdaming sumisigaw ng hustisya at kalayaan.

Saganang dugo ang dumanak mula sa labanan sa pagitan ng kapangyarihan at kasarinlan, ngunit hindi naging madali ang mga sumunod pang mga nangyari, tumagal ang labanan ng ilang araw at ang awtoridad ng kastila ay nagpadala pa ng maraming sundalo at dito ay kinitil ang buhay ng maraming Pilipino na siyang nag iwan ng sugat sa puso ng ating bayan.

Maraming sakanila ang nagapi, hinuli at pinagbabaril sa plaza ng walang kalaban laban habang ang huling pag-iisip at damdamin ay nasa ating inang bayan.

Bagama’t hindi naging maganda ang kasaysayan sa ating bayan dahil sa mga buhay na nawala at inialay, hindi sana maglaon ito’y tuluyan nang mabaon sa hukay na tanging mga nakatatanda na lamang ang may alam. Hindi man natin naranasan ang mapasakamay ng mga walang pusong dayuhan, sa paglipas ng panahon ay marahil tayo na rin mismo ang yayakap sa kanila, nakalulungkot mang isipin na ang ipinaglaban ng mga magigiting ay baka manatiling kasaysayan at parte na lamang ng kahapon, at ang bawat patak ng dugo sa pakturya ay magsilbing mantsa na lamang para sa iba.

Sa ating lalawigan kung saan sumibol ang munting pag-asa, nawa’y manatili ang sinag ng araw na gagabay sa atin patungo sa bayan na may pagmamahalan, kasarinlan, may sariling pagkakakilanlan ang pinaiiral.

Pag-alala sa alagad ng panitikan

H

igit sa isang payak na mukha ng tahanan, mas maiguguhit ang antigong bahay ni Lazaro Francisco bilang isang larawan ng marangyang alaala sa mundo ng sining. Mula sa makalumang istruktura ng moog nito hanggang sa mga kagamitang naging sandigan niya sa kanyang buhay, mababakas ang bawat kabanata ng istorya ng kanyang tagumpay.

Tarangkahan ng Pangarap Mula nang lisanin ng pamilya ni Lazaro Francisco o ‘Saro’ ang kanilang unang tahanan na kanyang sinilangan sa munisipalidad ng Orani sa Bataan, ganap silang namuhay sa probinsya ng Nueva Ecija. At dito, opisyal siyang nakatungtong at nakapasok sa tarangkahan ng munting dampa na pinaglakihan niya at ng kanyang pangarap at layunin sa buhay.

Gaya ng nakararaming kahanay na bahay sa Barangay Bonifacio sa lungsod ng Kabanatuan, ordinaryo lang din ang naging pamumuhay ng kanyang pamilya.

Kalakip ng kanyang karamdaman, hindi rin sila pinagpala sa panandaliang yaman ng mundo kung kaya’t hindi siya nagkamit ng diploma sa kolehiyo para sa nais sanang pagtagumpayang kursong Farm Management sa Central Luzon Agricultural School, na ngayon ay Central Luzon State University na. Subalit dahil may mithiin, pinilit niyang itaguyod ang kanyang pag-aaral hanggang sa matapos ang kursong bookkeeping sa International Correspondence School. Naglingkod siya bilang kawani ng pamahalaan sa loob ng maraming taon sa katauhan ng isang kintador publiko. Mula rito, tumaas ang kanyang katungkulan hanggang maging ganap na ingat-yaman ng probinsya ng Nueva Ecija.

Sa panimula ng pagkakalimbag sa kanyang kakayahan, mula nga sa ikot ng gulong ng kanyang palad, naging saksi ang kanilang munting dampa. Dito nanukal ang kanyang inpirasyon—ang kanyang pamilya, at ang pinaghugutan niya ng kanyang determinasyon—ang bagsik ng kahirapan. At tila isang agimat para sa kanya ang bahay na ito sapagkat dito rin nagsimulang mamukadkad ang kanyang karera bilang isang artista.

Silid ng Katanyagan Wala mang kaugnayan dito ang

kanyang tinapos sa kolehiyo, ang pagsulat naman ang naging dakila niyang propesyon. Hulog ng langit na maituturing para sa larangan ng panitikan si Saro. Ang hindi mabilang na parangal na kanyang natanggap na bunga ng kanyang pagsisikap, dedikasyon at pagmamahal sa literatura mula sa iba’t ibang prestihiyosong patimpalak ay hindi pa rin kayang bayaran ang higante at gintong kontribusyon niya para rito.

At patunay dito ang labing dalawang nobela niyang naisulat na halos lahat ay umani ng papuri at naging bahagi ng mga kasalukuyang kurikulum pangedukasyon.

Sangkap sa unti-unti niyang pag-angat at pagkatanyag ay ang mga luma na subalit buhay pang mga kagamitan niya upang makalikha ng kahanga-hangang obra maestra. Sa silid sa kanyang tahanan na ngayon ay opisyal nang museo, matatagpuan ang ilan sa mga ito gaya ng kanyang makinilya at paboritong mesa at silya. At sa mga ito niya sinisimulan ang proseso ng kanyang magandang kapalaran sa batawan ng panitikan. Dito niya minamakinilya ang lahat ng kanyang akdang-guro bago mailimbag at maihain sa uhaw sa nasyonalismong publiko.

Nakatanghal din sa museo ni Saro ang mga muwestra ng kanyang mga obra maestro kabilang na ang mga nobelang ‘Binhi at Bunga’, ‘Cesar’, ‘Ama’, ‘Bayang Nagpatiwakal’, ‘Sa Paanan ng Krus’, ‘Ang Pamana ng Pulubi’, ‘Bago Lumubog ang Araw’, ‘Maganda Pa Ang Daigdig’ at ‘Daluyong’. Kasama ang iba pa niyang pambihirang sulatin, ang mga ito ay nakahanay sa isang babasaging eskaparate sa salas ng bahay. At sa moog naman nito ay nakaladlad ang mga litratong bumubuhay sa ala-ala ng dahilan ng kanyang matamis na tagumpay. Unang una na rito ay ang larawan ng kanyang buong pamilya kasama ang kanyang mga

magulang na sina Eulogio Francisco at Clara Angeles.

Tahanan ng Tagumpay Dahil tahanan ng isang matagumpay na alagad ng sining, naging asilo rin ng karangalan ang tirahang ito ni Saro.

Naging miron ang nasabing bahay sa mga parangal na inuuwi niya gaya ng pagkilala sa kanyang mga akda noong mga taong 1925 para sa ‘Binhi at Bunga’ at 1926 para sa ‘Cesar’ ng magasing Liwayway.

Sinundan pa ito ng parangal na nobelang ginto mula sa Samahang Ilaw at Panitik para sa kanyang obrang ‘Sa Paanan ng Krus’. Ang kanyang likha naman na ‘Singsing na Pangkasal’ ay nasungkit ang pinakamataas na gantimpala sa kauna-unahang timpalak panitik ng Pamahalaang Commonwealth noong 1940, na kung saan, ang dating pangulo pa na si Manuel L. Quezon ang nag-abot sa kanya ng parangal.

Ang kalimitang tema ni Saro, bilang isang reyalistikong manunulat, sa kanyang mga akda ay nakaayon sa nasasaksihan niyang realidad sa mundo, partikular na sa bansang kanyang kinabibilangan.

Namumutawi sa lahat ng kanyang mga naisulat ang paksang nasyonalismo na karaniwang tumutuligsa sa mga sakit ng lipunan sa kanyang panahon, na maaari pa ring mailapat sa kasalukuyan.

At dahil sa kanyang kakaibang husay sa pagtalakay sa mga nasabing komposisyon gamit ang wikang Filipino, kinilala siya bilang ama ng Kapatiran ng mga Alagad ng Wikang Pilipino o KAWIKA na siya mismo ang nagtatag. Ang nasabing organisasyon ay may layuning pagibayuhin at palakasin ang paggamit ng Tagalog bilang pangunahing wika sa bansa. At sa dingding ng bakod ng kanyang tahanan, makikita ang isang nililok na palatandaan na sa nasabing lugar itinatag ni Saro ang samahan – isang

kapilas na nagpapakita na kahit matagal nang hindi umiiral ang kapisanan ay mananatili itong buhay sa ala-ala ng minamahal nating wika.

Museo ng Panitikan Noong taong 2009, opisyal na ipinroklama sa publiko ang pagkakapili kay Saro bilang isa sa apat na bagong pambansang artista ng bansa sa larangan ng panitikan. Ito ay naganap sa gitna ng mainit na usapin hinggil sa pagkakatanggal sa apat na personal na pinili ni Dating Pangulong Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. Mula sa nasabing pangyayari, muling naging matunog ang pangalan ni Saro at sa pagkakataong ito, sa modernong panahon.

Ang pagkakapili sa kanya bilang isang pambansang alagad ng sining ay ang nagbukas rin sa pinto, hindi lang para makilala siya ng bagong henerasyon, kundi upang mabigyan din ng pagpapahalaga ang minsan niyang pinanahanan sa mundong ibabaw nang siya ay nabubuhay pa – ang kanyang munting dampa na ngayon ay isa nang museo.

Sa ngayon, nasa ilalim ito ng pangangalaga ng kanyang anak na si Dr. John David Francisco. Hindi gaanong malaking atraksyon ang nadadala ng nasabing museo sa lungsod ng Kabanatuan. Subalit marami ang naniniwala na kung pagtutuunan ng pansin ng lokal na pamahalaan ng siyudad, malaki ang maaaring magbago sa kasiglahan ng nasabing pook.

Nguni’t anu’t ano mang maganap sa darating na bukas, dayuhin man ng mga turista o manatiling payak ang mukha ng museo, maiiwan parati sa loob nito ang isang pusong may tunay at wagas na pagmamahal sa sining at mabubuhay habang nakatindig ang panitikan sa lupang kanyang tinubuan.

a pamukadkad pa lamang ng bukang araw, nanunukal na ang isang ordinary tinaguriang Parke ng Kalayaan o Freedo ng pagbilog ng buwan, inaasahan na ng mga kahulugan ng pagdidilim ng nasabing liwasan Walang pinipiling oras ang pagiging abala ng Parke ng Kalayaan na matatagpuan sa pagitan ng Burgos Street at Del Pilar Street sa lungsod ng Kabanatuan. Araw man o gabi, ang tatlong malalaking parisukat na espasyong bumubuo dito ay tigib ng mga iba’t iba subalit ordinaryo nang kaganapan, na sa panahon ngayon ay nagbigay dito ng pagkakakilanlan. Dahit dito, ito ay naikukumpara sa hindi natutulog na kalsada ng Kamaynilaan, na anumang oras ay mayroong huminto, nagdadaan at gumagawa ng pagkakaabalahan.

Mula sa payak na pook-pasyalan noon, unti-unti na nang nagbago ang anyo ng Freedom Park kasabay ng pagtanda ng panahon. Buhat nang sumailalim ito sa renobasyon na isa sa mga proyekto ng dating Gobernador Eduardo Joson, nagbukas ito ng pinto para sa ilang katangi-tanging pagbabago nito. At ngayon, higit sa isang atraksyon bilang pahingahan at pasyalan, ito ay isa na nga sa sentro ng atensyon – atensyon para sa kalusugan, para sa gawaing pampaaralan at pampamayanan, at higit sa lahat, atensyon para sa kakaiba at abot-kayang aliwan.

Ang Selebrasyon sa Bukang Liwayway Bago pa man tuluyang yakapin ng karimlan ang kaliwanagan mula sa ikaapat ng umaga, mabenta na ang Freedom Park para sa mga Kabanatueñong labis ang pagmamahal sa kanilang kalusugan.

Minsan, kahit di pa man pumapatak ang nasabing oras, masasaksihan na ang mga pa-ilan-ilang mga taong tumatakbo sa mga kalsadang nakapalibot sa parke.

Bata man o matanda, lahat ay ganadong nagpapapawis para sa kani-kanyang layunin.

Ayon sa 23 anyos na si Moses Dalacat, isa sa mga nagjo-jogging, naging isa sa mga nakatakda na niyang gawain ang pagtakbo dito tuwing umaga. Kwento niya, halos tatlong taon na niya itong ginagawa dahil bukod sa mabuting naidudulot nito sa kanyang katawan, nagbibigay rin ito ng ibang kasiyahan sa kanya lalo na pag nakakakilala siya ng mga ilang kaibigan dito na kasabay niya ring tumatakbo.

At sa pagsapit naman ng alas singko, naging kultura na rin, partikular na ang mga may edad, ang pagsasayaw sa

mga nakiindak na tugtugin. Babae man o lalaki, buong loob ang pakikiisa sa tinatawag na aerobics. Noong una ay hindi ganoong tinatangkilik ang nasabing ehersisyo dahil marami sa mga patron nito ay nahihiya. Subalit pagdaan ng ilang buwan nang masimulan ito, untiunti ring dumagsa ang mga mananayaw dito. At ngayon, mayroon nang tatlong grupo ng mga mananayaw ng aerobics na nakapwesto sa iba’t ibang bahagi ng parke.

Ang Selebrasyon sa Araw Dahil katapat ng Freedom Park ang Nueva Ecija High School o NEHS at ang dating bahay-pamahalaan ng lalawigan, sa halos araw-araw ay nagiging tahanan ito ng di mabilang na tao, partikular na ng mga estudyante mula sa nasabing paaralan. Karamihan sa kanila, ginagawang lugar para sa kanilang pageensayo ng iba’t ibang presenatsyon sa klase ang parke tulad ng pagsasayaw at pagdudula-dulaan.

Ayon kay Jarem Andres, mag-aaral ng NEHS, madalas sila rito ng kanilang mga kaklase partikular na pag Sabado at Linggo. Dito sila nagsasanay ng mga aktibidad na kanilang itinatanghal sa paaralan. Subalit bukod sa pag eensayo, isiniwalat din niya na nagiging tambayan rin ito ng maraming estudyante, hindi lamang ng mga taga NEHS, gayundin ang taga-iba ring paaralan, na nagsisipagbulakbol.

“Nakakalibang kasi rito. Maraming tao.

May mga mabibilan din. May palaruan pa. Maraming nakikita kasi dito eh, kaya nakaka-engganyo na tumambay dito.

Siguro ‘yun din ‘yung nakikita no’ng mga nagbubulakbol dito,” wika ni Andres.

Ang Selebrasyon sa Gabi Matapos ang pamumukadkad ng bukang-liwayway at makalipas ang pagtirik ni Haring araw, nakahanda na upang maghasik ng kakaibang lagim sa Freedom Park ang bitbit na dilim ng gabi.

Pagpatak ng alas siyete ng gabi, oras na upang umpisahan ang selebrasyon sa trabaho ng walang kabanal-banal na propesyon. Pa-isa-isa, padalawa-dalawa, patatlo-talo at minsan isang kumpol na nagsisipaglitawan at nagsisipaglisawan sa liwasan ang mga kapansin-pansing manggagawa rito. Gamit ang kakaibang anyo sa gabi, sa tulong ng mga

nagkakapalang palamuti sa mukha at ng mga nagsisipagluwaang maseselang bahagi ng katawan, isinisilang ang kanilang hanap-buhay na kanila na ring kinahuhumalingan.

Sa kabilang banda, dumarami na rin ang populasyon ng mga lalaking kumakapit sa patalim. At marami sa mga ito, di tulad ng mga nasabing dilag na daig ang lalaban sa isang patimpalak sa dami ng borloloy at palamuti sa katawan, ay simple lamang kung titingnan at tila walang pakay anuman. Subalit tulad ni Magdalena, may kakaiba rin siyang transaksyon sa ilalim ng puno ng Akasya sa naturang parke.

Sa Piling ni Karla “Chicks ba?”

Ito ang laging unang katanungan ng mga babaeng trabahador sa Freedom Park sa tuwing may dadaan, hihinto at nagmamasid na mga kalalakihang naglalakad o nakasasakyan. Mula sa tanong na iyon, naghuhudyat ang simula ng negosasyon para sa bagsak-presyong pagbebenta ng laman. At matapos magkasundo sa iisang presyo, matatapos din ang sandali ng may kakaibang ngiti.

Si Karla (hindi tunay na pangalan), 19 na anyos, ay isa sa mga trabahadora dito.

Inamin niya na 17 anyos pa lamang siya ay namulat na siya sa gawaing ito. At sa murang edad na iyon, napasabak na rin siya sa prostitusyon.

Mayroong dalawang paraan ng paglalarawan si Karla sa kanyang pinapasok na hanapbuhay. Para sa kanya, una, nasisiyahan na siya sa nararamdaman niya sa tuwing ginagawa niya ito.

Pangalawa, tila isang nakahahawang sakit umano ang pakikipagtalik kapalit ng salapi dahil ito ang kinalakihan niya at nasilayan niya sa kanyang pamilya. Ayon sa kanya, dating nagtatrabaho sa isang beer house ang kanyang ina, samantalang kasalukuyang namamayagpag ang karera ng kanyang tiyahin sa Freedom Park.

Dahil sa hirap ng buhay, napilitang silang pasukin ang prostitusyon.

“Noong una, di ko rin maintindihan kung bakit kailangang gano’n. Pero no’ng 16 ako, nabuntis na ko. Walang tatay ‘yung anak ko. ‘Eh di naman ako nakapag-aral kaya wala ako makukuhang trabaho para mapakain ‘yung panganay ko no’n kaya nag-ganito rin ako,” wika ni Karla.

g-liwayway, hanggang sa pagtirik ni haringyong larawan ng pang-araw-araw na buhay sa om Park. At sa pagningning ng bituin kasabay a Kabanatueño ang literal at mas malalim na n.

Ayon sa kanya, noong una ay hindi rin niya masikmura ‘yung ginagawa niya lalo na nang una siyang mapasabak dito.

Ninais niyang talikdan ang kaniyang hanapbuhay subalit naiisip niya lagi na wala rin naman siyang mapagkukunan ng pangtustos sa kanyang anak. Iyon ang itinatak niya sa kanyang isipan kaya’t nagtagal siya rito hanggang ngayon.

“Madali lang kasi kumita dito. Instant money, eka nga nila. Saglit lang naman ‘yun. Oo, saglit nga lang, pero gano’n talaga eh,” paliwanag niya.

Kwento pa niya, mababa lang ang presyuhan sa kanila. Sa halagang 500 at pababa, may kalapating handa nang lumipad.

“Minsan, 200. Okay na ‘yun minsan kaysa naman wala. Abono pa sa sabon at damit. Nakakapagod din kayang maghintay at tumayo ng tumayo do’n.

Kaya kaysa umuwi ako ng wala, papatusin ko na ‘yun. Sayang din ‘yun,” dagdag niya.

Diin ni Karla, tila hindi na siya nahihiya dahil marahil naubos na umano ang lahat ng hiya niya buhat nang masikmura niya ang ginagawa niya. Lantad na rin daw kasi ang kanyang trabaho sa kanilang lugar. At kahit hindi na niya iniinda, alam na rin ito ng kinakasama niyang lalaki ang kanyang ginagawa.

“Wala eh. Alam naman sa Aduas [barangay], diba? Alam na samin dati pa.

Di ba, kesa wala, mas mabuti na ‘yung meron. Wala naman ako pagkukunan [pera] para makakain ako at yung tatlo kong anak. ‘Yun lang talaga.”

Sa Piling ni Karlo “Ano trip mo?”

Kung mayroong markadong kataga si Karla, iyan naman ang kay Karlo.

Ayon kay Paula, hindi tunay na pangalan ng isang bading na madalas sa Freedom Park, lagi sa kanyang sumasalubong ang katanungang iyon. Aminado siya na kadalasan, pag pumupunta siya sa Freedom, ay naghahanap rin siya ng aliw mula sa mga kalalakihan na maaari niyang upahan. At nakikita niya ang mga ito sa sulok-sulok na halos hindi naaabot ng ilaw.

“Di naman sila katulad no’ng mga pokpok na kahit saan na lang doon. Sila, sa dilim naman sila. Syempre, siguro nahihiya bilang lalaki sila,” paliwanag ni

Paula.

Katulad nga ng hanapbuhay ng mga babaeng trabahador, may kabayaran rin ang pagbebenta ng laman ng mga kalalakihan. At halos hindi nagkakalayo ang presyo ng binabayad ni Paula sa kanyang inuupahan sa binabayad ng mga umuupa naman kay Karla.

“Mura lang naman.

Minsan, nakakakuha ko dito, 200 o 300 tapos ako na rin bahala sa iba pa,” dagdag ni Paula.

Ayon pa sa kanya, mayroon ding iilan na hindi nagpapabayad sa mga naroroon sa parke. Ang iba umano ay tamang naghahanap lamang din ng aliw sa kanilang kapwa at dahil tanyag na nga ang Freedom Park sa ganoong kalakaran, doon nagsisipagpuntahan ang mga ito.

Ang Selebrasyon ng Prostitusyon Hindi maitatangging laganap na hindi lamang sa bansa, kundi sa buong mundo ang prostitusyon. At ang mga trabahador sa gabi sa Freedom Park ay bahagi lamang ng lumalaking populasyon nito.

Sa kasalukuyan, kasabay ng pagdami ng pumapasok sa pangakong trabaho ng prostitusyon, patuloy rin dumadami ang anyo nito. Ngayon, maikakategora na ang mga uri ng prostitusyong pinapasok ng mga sangkot mula sa tinatawag na brothels, bars, akyat-barko, massage parlors, escort services, sex tourism, cybersex, local and international sex trafficking at ang street prostitutions kung saan nga nabibilang ang mga trabahador sa Freedom Park.

Base sa pag-aaral na isinagawa ng International Labor Organization noong 1998, mayroong 400,000 – 500,000 na mga prostitutes ¬sa bansa at pinaniniwalaang nasa 60,000 – 100,000 sa mga ito ay mga menor de edad.

Noong 2004, lumobo sa 600,000 ang bilang ng mga nasira ang kinabukasan sa prostitusyon at umakyat pa ito sa 800,000 noong 2005. Sa laki ng populasyong ito, napagtanto na ang kalahati sa mga ito ay kabataan. Samakatuwid, taun-taon ay may 3,266 na mga bata ang nadadagdag sa bilang ng sumusuong sa prostitusyon.

Dahil dito, base sa nilabas na pagsisiyasat ng United Nations Children’s Fund o UNICEF, nasa pang-apat ang Pilipinas sa pinakamaraming menor de edad na nagtatrabaho bilang prostitutes.

Ayon pa sa mga karagdagang pag-aaral, taong 1982 pa lamang ay binansagan na ang Pilipinas bilang kuta ng mga babaeng bayaran sa Asya. Ito ay dahil dekada 70 pa lamang ay umabot na sa 50,000 ang noon ay tinatawag pang registered hospitality girls na biglaang lumobo noong 1987 at binansagang bar girls. Ang lahat ng ito ay naging bunga nang dumating ang mga sundalong Amerikano sa bansa noong kasagsagan ng Pangalawang Pandaigdigang Digmaan.

Sa panahong iyong nag-umpisang naglitawan ang mga ‘go-go’ o ‘girlie bars’ sa mga base military, partikular na sa Clark, Pampanga at Subic Bay. Ang Aksyon Laban sa Selebrasyon Base sa ilang pagsisiyasat, patuloy ang pagkinang ng prostitusyon dahil sa hindi pantay na pagtingin sa karapatang pantao ng mga kababaihan. Kabilang na sa isyung iyon ay ang pagtrato sa kanila bilang mga materyales na pangtalik lamang.

ave you ever wondered about the different cultures and norms among the colleges inside our university? A subculture stratification – that “expresses itself in the specifically stylized way of life to which all aspiring members [of the relevant group] are expected to adhere (Max Webber).” In a sense, they develop a quality which eventually becomes a trademark of their college. We gathered random ideas and opinions from students of their own respective departments as to why their college stands among the rest and what makes them unique.

At a glance, most of the students are unaware of this phenomenon unless otherwise discussed.

“Innovative thinkers” as CCS students define themselves. They like to do work easier. They love their flash drives more than their pens, notebooks and papers. In other words they shun recording matters manually. We can also see that most of them do not use the Apple Gadget because they might not be satisfied with its features. CCS students are fond of online games and applications. They are web developers and anime-fanatics. We may consider them as logically critical thinkers since their field of specialization requires them to be such.

Generally, CAS students are those who look at themselves as happy persons. They are not the stressed individuals working out in their chosen field.

Some, if not most, of them wear overly-fashioned dresses and has the (false) freedom of not wearing the proper uniform. Also, they hold on to the belief of expressing their side about every issue within the university. In other words, CAS students are fearless in giving their interpretations on what is right and wrong. They are too close catching up with friends in the college because of their very thin population. They also categorize themselves as talented individuals.

As their course requires, the COED&SW students are outgoing and approachable – they need to maintain an upbeat personality to be at their best.

Looking at them like this, most people still consider them as introverts owing to the fact that they have to be as quiet and contemplative as they learn to observe people for they will be doing the same when they become teachers. You may think that COED loves to attend social gatherings, but you’re wrong! They are already sick of dealing with the predicaments of the people they deal with, every day.

They claim to be the “most stressed out” students on matters of academics, most especially their Cisco subject. CoEn students say that if something negative is going in life, you just have to be patient riding it out because the positive is just around the corner. Although they are not the smallest college (in terms of population), they feel as if they are for some weird reasons. The ratio of male to female in CoEn department is probably 3:1, and most of them are “heartthrob” gamers that love playing Dota 2.

According to the students we talked to, HRIM students are considered as “rich kids” who are really into fancy gadgets of the latest technology.

Also, HRIM students are obsessed with anything that is related to food (gastronomy). They love taking pictures of themselves and posting them on social media networking sites. HRIM students are extremely into fashion, even labeling themselves as certified fashionistas. Most of them are shoe fanatics; they love em Nikes and J’s. However, what stands out the most for HRIM students is the unique, tight, and unbreakable bond they develop for one another.

As future leaders that will apply the basic fundamentals of law – it is looking quite grim for the CCJE department as they consider pride in themselves as notorious cheaters. It is in their common interest to conquer any hurdles that stand in their way no matter what it takes. They are extremely disciplined in physical fitness which allows them to excel in non-academic activities such as sports.

Lesbians are prominent in the college.

“Home of Excellence” is what the CBA describes their college. They are very attentive and competitive when it comes to university-wide events mainly the intramurals. Some of them are bookish and addictive to analytical problem-solving. They are best friends with their calculators. They are business-minded and good at allowance-budgeting. CBA students try to adopt a corporate culture in terms of team building or camaraderie among co-members in their college organizations. Being competitive, though, they do not oppress others. Moreover, they respect others by showing sportsmanship in their race to reach the top [to glitter among the rest].

CONAMS students enjoy malling and hanging out in milk tea cafes. They are very strict with their personal hygiene. And if calculators are CBA students’ best friends, rubbing alcohol is the CONAMS students’. CONAMS have mastered the art of memorization using different techniques such as creating pseudonyms and patterns. CONAMS students are very active in sports. As for their personalities, they unfortunately engage in arguments on social media. On the other hand, they take their studies seriously.

No matter what differences in culture or orientation separate us, whether these differences were sought unconsciously or through valiant efforts, they surely help us stand out from the rest. These contrasting features only highlight the importance we willingly give to our departments where we feel a sense of belongingness we find nowhere else. We, the Wesleyanians are living in the same institution, Wesleyan University-Philippines, our alma mater. “Building people and making a difference” as we often say. The distinctions we make among ourselves are what make us unique, and even if it stratifies us we should always bear our main core in mind and that is to nurture a Christian Character.

At tiyak na hindi nila makakalimutan ang araw na iyon kung saan sila ay niloko ng maling akala. Mapanlinlang ang pagaakala.

Sports Editorial The Calm Before The Storm, Not 26

Palarong Wesleyan 2014 was indeed a success. At some point, yes.

We all know that the five-day event was scheduled on the dates September 15 to 19. But due to the tropical storm Luis, wherein it caused a cancellation of classes last September 18 in Nueva Ecija to ensure the safety of all students, Wesleyan University-Philippine (WU-P) complied.

All the events on that day were cancelled and the schedule of the intramurals was extended until September 20 to finish all the sports events.

September 19, the storm warnings were still on a high note which made the province to decide that classes in all levels must still be suspended since Typhoon Luis has not left the area.

What happened was even graver than the typhoon itself. Students were advised to stay at home but because of the ongoing events, the administration must be telling the students otherwise.

The organizers of the intramurals were eager to finish the events. Yes, amid the storm warnings, they still continued the events for that day inside the university gymnasium. Some students left the university premises but some students decided to stay to cheer for their colleges.

What was happening here?

We have already been passed once by Typhoon Santi last year and we were putting the safety of the students at risk just to get this over with.

We know that they took into consideration that if the games were cancelled, they would be forced to extend the intrams until Monday, September 22, which would disrupt classes.

But the thing is, we are gambling on the lives of our students. Typhoon Santi was never really expected to be that strong but it was. But what if Luis changed its path at the time the intramurals was being held? How could the administration ensure that students who attended the event were safe? While other students in the province are kept in their homes.

The university administration is now strict on implementing its rules, and we applaud them for that. But what happened during the Palarong Wesleyan was obviously violating the advice of the province and the safety of the students athletes and non-athletes.

Even if WU-P is a private institution and has the authority over its policies, it should follow orders from the government especially when the safety of its prime stockholders is at risk.

WU-P should in turn be following orders as it implements its policies strictly.

No one got hurt and the classes were not disrupted. So are you satisfied now? As if all the professors are attending their classes on a regular basis. But that is on a different issue.

We commend all the athletes, the students who cheered for them and the student leaders who participated. But the organizers? The administration? Guess what, we are not happy for that wrong move. And besides, where are they at the time when they ordered it to happen? Safe.

at saka pumaimbabaw. Isang bagay lang ang tiyak, mangangapa na naman ang ating mga atleta sa pag-opensa at pag-depensa.

Samakatuwid maliit ang tsansang maagaw nila ang tronong ilang taon ng inuupuan at inaalagaan ng NEUST Phoenix.

Bilog ang bola. Hindi lang ito iikot para sa atin. Hindi ito parang sarili nating mga gamit na laging nasa atin ang karapatan at posesyon. Isang segundo at posibleng hindi na tayo ang may hawak nito. Isang iglap, tumataginting na tres o dos ang siyang maging katapat. Buong pwersa natin itong tanganan gaya ng buong loob na ibibigay sa laban.

Kailan mapagtatanto ng ating mga manlalaro na ang pag-opensa o pagdepensa ay tila pagkakabit ng sinturon?

Kailangan mahigpit.

Sa kabilang dako, malaki naman kasi talaga ang kaibahan ng mga manlalaro

ng NEUST sa atin, base sa obserbasyon na nagmula mismo sa mga mata at bibig ng nakakakita. Puspos at masusi nilang inaaral ang lahat ng posibilidad na itakbo ng laro. Mula sa higpit ng depensa at panggagwardiya hanggang sa opensa at pagpapasa-pasa. Taliwas sa lohika at prinsipyo na pinapagana ng maraming basketbolista sa atin.

Marahil tatanungin ninyo kami, kung bakit hindi na lang kami ang naglaro. Bakit ang dami naming sinasabi gayong hindi naman kami ang nagpapakahirap? Bakit hindi na lang kami ang lumaban at walang pakundangang humataw sa loob ng court?

Wala samin ang oportunidad upang pumasok sa larangan kung saan kayo nabibilang. May rason kung bakit kayo naririyan. May dahilan kung bakit dapat kayo ang magkatas-pawis upang maitayo ang pribilehiyo ng ating unibersidad.

Pero kailan nga ba talaga? Kailan nga ba namin matitikman ang inaasamasam na lamig mula sa aircon na matagal ng ipinangangalandakan na ilalagay sa Gymnasium ng ating Unibersidad.

Sa nakalipas na Palarong Wesleyan 2014, pare-pareho nating nasaksihan ang pagtayo sa entablado ng ating Ginoong Presidente Pacifico B. Aniag para sa kanyang pambungad na pananalita at narinig din natin ang lahat ng kanyang sinabi, ngunit higit na nakapukaw pansin ay ang pangako niyang malalagyan ng aircon ang gym ng paaralan. Marami ang natuwa, humiyaw sa galak, at napangiti dahil sa sinabing ito n gating mahal na presidente, nabanggit rin niya na nakaplano na ito kasunod ng pagpapaayos ng gym upang mas maging maganda at maayos ang daloy ng hangin habang ang mga estudyante ay nagkaklase dito. Bago

dumating ang araw ng Palarong Wesleyan mayroon ng planong ipakabit ang aircon sa loob ng gym subalit sa kadahilanang naabutan na ng pagdiriwang ng palaro ay hindi na naihabol ang paglalagay ng nasabing bagay. Ngunit lumipas na ang ilang buwan at natapos na ang isang semestre ay wala pa din nakikita kahit isang anino ng pinapangakong aircon na ikakabit sa gym n gating Unibersidad.

Iba’t-ibang reklamo, mga himutok, pagbatikos ang maririnig sa mga estudyanteng umasa at patuloy na umaasa.

Gaano ba ka totoo ang lahat ng salita na nanggagaling sa bibig n gating presidente?

Pero may katotohanan nga ba talaga o wala ang kanyang mga pangako?

Maganda ang bawat plano na nagmumula sa bibig ng ating pamunuan, masarap pakinggan at mas lalong masarap kung ito’y mararamdaman, subalit anong nangyayari sa mga binabalak nilang gawin, bakit wala man lang makitang bakas ng katuparan sa proyektong ninanais. Bawat estudyante naniniwala at umaasa sa sinasabi ng pamunuan katulad

nitong aircon na matagal na nila dapat tinupad, hindi ba sapat ang matrikulang binabayad o ang karagdagang singil ng Unibersidad na binabayaran ng mga estudyante?

Nais lang naman namin ay masuklian ng magandang serbisyo at maayos na pasilidad ang perang ibinabayad namin sa tuwing araw ng enrolan. Sa haba ng panahon na lumipas pagkatapos ganapin ang Palarong Wesleyan, hindi pa ba sapat ang mga nagdaang araw at oras upang matagumpay na maikabit ang aircon na dapat sana’y bago pa man magkaroon ng Palaro ay naikabit na. Hindi ba dapat gumagawa na ng aksyon ang pamunuan ng Wesleyan University-Philippines upang maisakatuparan ang paglalagay nito sa gym upang mas maginhawahan ang mga estudyanteng nagkaklase rito araw-araw.

Kulang pa ba ang panahong nakalaan ?

Mahal ba masyado ang gastos na kailangan para sa nasabing bagay na dapat bilhin at ikabit? Ano pa ba ang mga bagay na nakakasagabal para maging dahilan sa pagkakaudlot na paglalagay ng aircon?

O baka naman wala talagang isang salita

Students’ speak: Finally! Air-conditioned gymnasium? ang pamunuan ng Unibersidad at tanging kalokohan lang ang mga bagay na kanyang sinabi noong araw ng Palarong Wesleyan.

Estudyante ang siyang buhay ng isang eskwelahan, dahil kung walang magaaral wala din maitatatag na paaralan, reklamo ng karamihan sana matikman naman ang lamig bago man lang umalis sa paaralang pinapasukan sapagkat ilan taon na itong hinihiling at ilang semestre na ang dumating, natapos at muling dumating pero ang minimithing aircon sa gym hanggang ngayon wala pa din.

Mahalaga ang pagtupad sa tungkulin isang responsibilidad na bawat isa nararapat gampanan, kung makakabuti naman para sa karamihan bakit hindi pa umpisahan? Hihintayin pa bang mawalan na ng tiwala ang mga estudyante sa pamunuan ng sariling paaralan at hindi na maniwala sa kahit na ano pang sasabihin at ipapangakong gagawin. Ilan taon pa kaya ang aabutin bago maramdaman ang pagkilos ng pamunuan sa pagkakabit ng aircon sa gym na mismong mga estudyante sabik na sabik makita at maranasan ang lamig.

It was a milestone in the history of Wesleyan University-Philippines to hold its intramurals in the newly-renovated gymnasium and freshly-constructed court.

After some president’s speeches of promises to make the venue airconditioned, at least for the press time, there are tracks that the promise is nearly fulfilled. It is expected that gymnasium will be fully-refurbished before the end of this academic year. Indeed, it is a good news for us after so many years

of complaining about the roasting temperature of gymnasium. The literallyheating atmosphere of every game is about to end.

Aside from this, the event has been a commendable one by making students enjoy this week-long activity. The intramurals serve as the playground for all students who want to escape or at least rest from the stressful academic life of students.

Palarong Wesleyan is also an opportunity for some student spectators to watch their favorite players or a chance to search for their crush. The opening program is also put on a great

improvement where seat assignments among colleges are organized as compared to what happened last year where students from small-numbered colleges grumbled on huge-numbered colleges for occupying their seats.

On the other hand, just like everything around us, intramurals is not a perfect activity. It has flaws in its angle.

First on the list is the program and on how it is executed. Aside from not following the given time, there are some changes in schedule that students are not well informed. Some students did not know whether they should go or not in

a particular place to watch a game with a doubt in its schedule. Maybe for the next time, students should be notified on the timetable of every event.

We can also consider some things that happen about rivalry among colleges.

Intramurals is made to uphold one’s sense of sportsmanship and not to put any personal matters or quarrels among opponents. The fight is merely on the court and not in every individual. The large number of persons we have in our college does not necessary mean that we have the right to humiliate those who are in little-numbered departments. We

don’t always need to brag our numbers to dominate others. A little bit humility is also required sometimes.

The essence of this activity is not about winning but maybe competitiveness to win or learning in defeat.

The next time that we will hold such activity, we hope that greater improvements will be accomplished.

Students are expecting air-conditioned gymnasium, more decent sports facilities, but above these things, we are expecting a friendly battle among colleges.

This is just a sports activity. Don’t take it personally.

Kung matatandaan, nuong nakaraang opening ng intrams 2014, winika ni President Pacifico Aniag na mas bibigyan nya ng pansin ang pang akademikong pangangailangan ng mga estudyante ng Wesleyan. Nangangahulugan na ba ito na babawasan na ng kanyang administrasyon ang suporta sa mga manlalaro ng Wesleyan?

Kung aware ka, hindi lahat ng nagqualified sa National Private Schools Athletic Association (NPRISAA) eh nakapunta at nakapag compete nitong nakaraang Mayo.

Sa tingin mo, anong nangyari?

Kung kukumpyutin mo ang binabayad ng bawat estudyante, tingin mo, nauubos kaya para sa mga manlalaro talaga?

Hindi maiwasang maikumpara ang naunang administrasyon sa kasalukuyan.

Sa nakalipas na Palarong Wesleyan, nakatutuwa at nakakatawa ang isang laro na ginanap sa isang sulok ng Plaza Acacia.

Hulaan kung ano ito… hubad-paang nagtatakbuhan, nagluluhuran at nagpapa gulong-gulong ang mga manlalaro sa ( A. durog na egg shells B. dinurog na ngipin, C. mapagpanggap na white sand) habang hinahabol-habol at pinagpapasa-pasahan ang isang bola. Ito ay ang volleyball.

tumubo ang court na ito mula sa kawalan bago mamayagpag ang ingay ng Palaro.

O siguro nga hindi ko lang talaga napapansin… kasi una, wala namang gumagamit, wala tuloy akong ideya na may ganoong lugar pala dito. Ngunit ayon sa isa kong kakilala, ang court na ito ay unang ginamit noong 2013, kung saan dito sa ating unibersidad idinaos ang PRISAA meet. At ‘yun na nga ang nangyari… isinama na sa listahan ang sport ito para sa Palaro.

Mainam makita na bagamat hindi sanay ang ilan sa beach volleyball, ay mabilis naman na nai-set ang mood ng mga manlalaro na kunwari’y nasa tabing dagat nga sila. Damang-dama ito ng mga manlalaro kung saan ang ilan ay nakasuot pa ng shades sa gitna ng mainit na laban.

Naalala ko pa habang pinapanood ko ang mga babaeng players na sugat-

pangarap nung naunang administrasyon ay makalaro sa UAAP pang mga basketbolista natin, ngunit kung babalikan mo ang sinabi ng kasalukuyang administrasyon, mas pagtuunan daw natin ng pansin ang akademya.

Napakalayo kung iyong iisipin di ba?

Para sa akin, may laman ang sinabi ng ating president. Bakit? Ilang varsity player nga ba natin ang masipag lamang pumasok tuwing malapit na ang intrams at kapag regular na klase ay di mo matagpuan? Iilan ilan lamang sa kanila ang nakaka-graduate on time dahil na rin nagkakaproblema sa kanilang mga subjects dahil bihira ngang magpapasok, mabuti pa sa mga praktis nila at palaging present. ‘Yung crush ko nga, 6 years na dito sa Wesleyan mauunahan ko pa atang grumaduate! Hahaha. GO--- CBA! Saka CAS. LOL para-paraan.

Pero seryosong usapan, ano nga ba ang napapala ng mga athlete natin? Maliban sa scholarsip at ilang dagdag points sa klase, ano pa nga ba?

Minsang nanuod ako ng isang game, dalawang malalaking colleges ang naglalaban, sabi ng coach ng team, “kapag nanalo kayo, exempted na kayo sa exams nyo!” Wow! Sosyal sila koya mo ‘noh. Ang ganda ng offer kumpara sa mga katulad namin na cheerer lang ng palaro. Wala din ba kaming dagdag points?  Isang kataas taasan naman ang nagsabi sa isang team na kahit hindi sila lumaro sa palaro eh panalo pa din naman ang kanilang grupo. It hurts no, imagine, nagpakahirap ka na kapa-praktis tapos sasabihan ka ng ganun, NAKAKAENCOURAGE PO, SOBRA. Minsan naisip ko, para saan nga ba ang intrams kung nag aaway away lang

Agaw buhay talaga ang pagsali sa mga ganyan, sa ipinaglalaban mong plus 2 sa grades, karangalan ng iyong college at isang mangkok ng lugaw, may sukli kang mga pilay at galos.

Instant din na nagbagong-anyo ito nang biglang bumuhos ang malakas na ulan, umusbong naman ang isang higanteng kumunoy matapos lumabas ang tunay nitong kulay at napatunayan na sadyang nagpapanggap lang, mabuti nalang at hanggang sa kasalukuyan ay wala namang naiulat na nawawala, dahil

nilamon ng lupa.

Sa isang banda ay nakakatuwa naman, bagamat malayo tayo sa mga baybaying may pinong buhanginan, nag-effort ang kung sino man ang nag-effort upang ilapit ito sa atin. At kahit sabihing alternatibo lamang at malayo sa katotohanan, ok na rin kesa sa wala. Pero mas ok sana kung mas pino pa ng konti. Kung mas maayos pa ng konti.

Hindi kagaya ng ibang court sa campus na nagagamit sa loob ng buong taon, ang sa Beach volleyball ay hindi ko nanaman nararamdaman ang saysay dahil wala namang gumagamit. Marahil, kagaya nga ng sinabi ko kanina… hindi naman kasi tayo sanay. Pero kung maiimprove pa siguro ‘yon ng bahagya, konting hakot pa ng white sand, baka sakaling mapakinabangan kahit hindi intrams.

Siguro nakikita na din sa atin mismo, sa pakikitungo natin sa bawat isa. Siguro kapag nayos na ang lahat, maging ang ating mga pasilidad ay mas palalakasin na ulit ng unibersidad at ang kanyang kapit para sa pagpapalakas. Siguro kapag nangyari na lahat ‘yun, malamang, sana at malay mo sa susunod… AIRCON NA ANG GYM NATIN.

t’s been 36 years, after all, since the Philippines Basketball team made it to the world championships and 40 years sin]ce they won a game in World Cup. It did not matter that they failed to advance to the 16-team knockout phase of the tournament, admittedly their stab-in-dark goal going into the competitions.

While Gilas failed to advance to the round of 16 in the Federation Internationale de Basketball (FIBA) World Cup, it’s well-fought matches with some of the sport’s top team.

“This game against the Philippines was the most uncomfortable game I’ve ever coached in my career,” Argentina Coach Julio Lamas said through an interpreter just after the Filipinos almost upset the world No.3 Argentineans before going down 85-81 in their third game in the Group B preliminaries. Prior to this heartbreaking loss to Argentina, the Filipinos went through another wringer of a heartbreaker right in their first game

At the end of the match, 82-70 was the official result, victory over the Filipinos.

Volleyball is a new drift..

A cut shot, a dump or a kill may be the right attack to win the game, but for these women, teamwork is their key for success.

Mika Aereen Reyes is a 20 year old volleyball athlete and presently the middle hitter/blocker of De La Salle University Lady Spikers. Mika is go-hard intense player that always give her 100% to the game. While Alyssa Caymo Valdez; a 21 year old multi-awarded athlete and considered to be one of the best collegiate volleyball players in the Philippines and currently the outside hitter of Ateneo de Manila University Net Spikers. She is fantastic and the darling of smiles. Also the known as the Mayor Spiker of all spikers, she is simple but the best.

Valdez and Reyes are the finest examples of women to look up to; they strike people’s heart by using their strong palm and charm. They also excel in academics and other extracurricular activities; in fact Valdez is a current member of their

university student council.

What a total package.

Despite of their fame and excellence as an athlete at the UAAP’s women volleyball tournament, they can still manage to keep their feet on the ground and that is the reason why many aspiring players tend to admire them. Their powerful spikes can simply take your breath away. In addition, their athleticism and passion is just radiating every time they gets hold of the ball.

I had a chance to ask one of the varsity players of volleyball in our university, I asked her if she admire Mika and Alyssa for their talent in playing volleyball and she answered, “oo kasi ang galling nila maglaro at the same time hindi sila mayabang specially Valdez. At kahit nakakapoints sila hindi sila nagmamayabang. Hindi nila sinasarili yung fame. Sineshare nila yung spotlight sa mga team mates nila.” - Lucille Sanchez said.

They say, being a good leader to your

team mates and being a good player makes you to be one of the best players. Winning or losing, Valdez and Reyes always keep on smiling for them to cheer their team mates up and convince them not to lose grip and keep on fighting no matter what happen.

It is just a game after all; you shake hands, play and have fun. They say love is playing every game as if it is your last. Play as if it is your last serve, last receive, last set, last spike or last point. It is not important how you start the game, but it is on how you will make a mark at the end of the game.

You also have to give your very best or your 100% in every game so you don’t have anything to regret in the end for not trying.

Valdez and Reyes proved that women can also go further in sports.

“We played as a team, always,” Valdez said humbly on an interview.

And that is the right attitude of a player, because Volleyball is not a one man team.

ave you ever been in a sport field and see something circular above? Wondering what is it. Yeah! What is it, though? Flying saucer, Captain America’s shield, a ceramic plate thrown by an angry wife, a pan cake?

It’s a Frisbee. A disc.

Ultimate... played with a disc called Frisbee.

There is always a misconception about this. Frisbee is not the game.

It is the disc itself though it used colloquially referring to the sport. So it is technically wrong when one call the sport as Frisbee, because the sport is actually should call as “Ultimate.”

By the name itself, it is ultimately exciting non-contact team field sport played by thousands of people over the world. What’s most exciting ‘bout this?

It combines the best feature of sports such as American football, basketball, netball and soccer in just one simple fascinating game!

Here are the main recipes for the game. A rectangular field with end zones at each end, a regulation field is 64m by 37m, with 18m deep end zones.

The players, there will be 2-team on a

game. Each team should have 7-players.

And the disc, Frisbee is generally plastic and roughly 20 to 25 centimetres in diameter with a lip.

To start the game. Two teams begin lining up on the front of their respective end zone lines. The defence team pulls (long throws) the disc as a kick-off.

Pull often initiate by a member of the defending team raising one arm with the disc to show that they are ready to begin the play.

On the game. The disc may be advance in any direction and completing a pass to a teammate. The player, who has the disc, called thrower, should not run or even take a step. And he has only 10 seconds to throw the disc. The defender guarding the thrower, called marker, count the stall count.

To score. Every time the offense completes a pass on the defence end zone, (catches the disc at the dense end zone) the offense team scores a point.

But when the pass doesn’t complete, the defence will take the possession of the disc and become the offense.

Foullllls!!! When a player commits a contact to his opponent a foul occurs.

The game resumes even the foul disrupt possession, and the possession retained.

This is a “No referee game”?! Yes it is. Players are responsible about their own fouls and line calls. They resolve their own disputes. This one of the reason of what they called Spirit of the Game, where the said sport stresses sportsmanship and fair play. The game encourages competitive, but never at the expenses of respect between players, following to the rules and simply enjoying the play.

Now you’ll never wonder whether there’s a UFO above the sky when you’re on a sport field. It’s just those Ultimate players who throw a UFO. Ultimate Frisbee Object.

Held during the latter part of every first semester, Palarong Wesleyan is one of the annual events every Wesleyanian looks forward to. Hot opening, hot athletes, hot teams, hot games. Need I say more?

But before the games even start, we looked into every college’s efforts for training; every passion for winning, every desire to bring home the bacon. What does every team have in store to be able to show a satisfying game for supporters and fans alike?

The College of Business and Accountancy (CBA) is all set for its defense of the championship title they have been holding for __ years now. Not only they are planning to once again dominate the score cards; they are craving to retain their championship title. CBA has been consistent in almost all of the events in

the intramurals for the past years, and so this year, we can anticipate unswerving performances from CBA athletes.

‘Bring back the glory’ is probably still the motto of the College of Nursing and Allied Medical Sciences (CONAMS) this year. Years before the CBA Dragons took over, the CONAMS Lions were the previous possessors of the intramurals championship title. Surely, we can look forward to more eager and hungry CONAMS athletes eyeing the championship title like a lion to its prey.

Our ‘Tech’ guys wouldn’t waver, though.

According to an earlier interview with one of their local council officers, the College of Engineering athletes are pushing every muscle possible to improve their performances this year, after placing third in the tally last year. Who says engineering

students only engage themselves in math, engines and machines? They engage in sports, too!

We’ve got the eyes of the Tigers, as the College of Computer Studies joins in the quest for championship. They might have placed fourth at last year’s intramurals, but this year, they assure us: we’re gonna hear them roar.

Our future educators had their lesson plans kept for a while, as they prepare their game plans for the upcoming Palarong Wesleyan. Not only did they list down ‘grab the championship title’ as their number one objective, they also prepared countless ‘energizers’ for all of us to see. Be prepared to witness an actual demonstration of playing strategies, as the College of Education studies its way to win that freaking title.

Atten—tion! Square your shoulders, prepare to salute: make way for the men (and women) who would soon be serving and protecting the motherland. These future men in uniforms are being trained how to chase a criminal someday. And they’d apply it this year. The College of Criminology students would be chasing that championship title as if it was a burglar running from someone’s abode after stealing a cookie from the cookie jar.

Kidding!

Speaking of cookies, our next contenders are those people who know the way through a person’s stomach. And it’s probably how they’d snatch the title.

Prepare your appetites, as the College of Hotel, Restaurant, and Institution Management steam, bake, and sauté their way to victory. They’re probably gathering

Who says the game is over? Nuhuh. Watch out for the mighty Eagles: they might be out to get you with their hidden flairs and knacks. National bird, remember? Strong, brawny, sturdy. That means they might just fly from somewhere and grab that victory using their mighty claws. Never underestimate the power of ‘twist of fate’: brought to you by the College of Arts and Sciences.

So, everything and everyone’s almost set for the intramurals. Every college have started training as early as July. Burning passion, fiery enthusiasm: to come, to see, to conquer.

Palarong Wesleyan is on its way. Soon we’ll hear, and soon we’ll see: LET THE GAMES BEGIN.

For the third time in three seasons, Wesleyan fails to compete

Coach speaks up over NECSL cheerleading rule out

by Kevin Frany The Green Knights cheerleading team coach broke his silence regarding the team’s non-participation in the annual cheerdance competition for this season of the Nueva Ecija Collegiate Sports League.

This is the third time in a row that the Green Knights did not compete in the aforementioned event.

However, Green Knights coach Pastor Alejo said that there were several reasons that brought the decision.

“Hindi nanagdalangcheerdance [sa NECSL] kasisobranggastos, tapos may accidents, at yung academics na din nungmgabata.”

Alejo also said that members of the Green Knights were having “difficulties”

in working out their grades considering the fact that most of them have several subjects marked as incomplete.

Regarding finances, Alejo claimed, “support langang [university]”.

However, according to Jim Aldrin San Jose, Green Knights cheerleader, a lot of Weselyanians and even people outside the university are anticipating and are constantly asking when will the Green Knights come back and compete again.

“Ang alam ko kasi gusto rin ni Sir Alejo na bumuo ng bagong team and magpatrain ang kaso ayaw yata ng admin. Siguro ‘di pa handang gastusan kami. Parang sayang naman kasi ‘di na naman nakasali ang WU-P lalo na ngayon sobrang lumalago na ang dance community sa school,” San Jose said via facebook chat.

After three seasons, Wesleyan Riders (then Wesleyan Green Knights) cheerleading squad once again failed to participate in this year’s NECSL. It can be recalled that during the Nueva Ecija Collegiate Basketball League, the Green Knights cheerleading team was able to bag multitudes of awards. Riders Volleybelle bags 2nd place in NECSL pageant

by Camille Dofredo with reports from Brenda Aguilar Wesleyan Riders lady spiker Sharla Santillan won 1st runner up in the beauty pageant portion of Nueva Ecija Collegiate Sports League (NECSL) last August 22 at the Araullo University-Phinma gymnasium.

Muses from 13 different colleges and universities in Nueva Ecija ramped

together with their school’s varsity teams.

Cyrille Luciano from the College of the Immaculate Concepcion Kings won the title as Ms. NECSL 2014 while Janet Andres from La Fortuna College Spartans and Jale Munar from ABE International Business College-Cabanatuan Blue Vipers were hailed as second and third runnersup, respectively.

All the other college teams, except the College of Criminal Justice Education Stallions, were able to participate in the team dance competition.

The other participating teams were the College of Business and Accountancy Dragons, College of Computer Studies Tigers, College of Education Jaguars, and the College of Engineering Sharks.

Last year, the CHRIM Phoenix and several other teams modified the university jogging pants which was the required preconcerted official competition attire which led to their disqualification.

Garnering 21 gold medals, 14 silvers, and a bronze, the Dragons trumped the other contenders and emerged as the highest pointer.

The powerful College of Criminal Justice Education Stallions came in second with seven gold medals, 18 silvers, and two bronzes.

Not far behind, the College of Education Jaguars gained seven golds, three silvers, and three bronzes which gave it the third spot.

Meanwhile, the College of Hotel, Restaurant, and Institution Management Phoenix claimed the fourth spot with four gold medals, a silver medal, and 17 bronzes.

The College of Nursing and Allied Medical Sciences Lions attained two silver medals and seven bronzes and claimed the fifth spot.

With a silver and three bronzes, the College of Computer Studies Tigers ended up sixth while the College of Engineering Sharks, with three bronzes, finished seventh.

The College of Arts and Sciences Eagles dwelled at the bottom with a single bronze medal.

Phoenix ace team dance comeback with a blast Imagine Palarong Wesleyan without the a Phoenix dance group.

After a gruesome loss last year, the College of Hotel, Restaurant, and Institution Management Phoenix managed to reclaim the team dance title against all the opposing teams in the opening ceremony of the Palaro.

The voracious-for-victory Phoenix clinched the title with their pumpedup performance that screamed Phoenix spirit with a glorious musical piece to hype-up a grandiose comeback.

The Phoenix team dance were composed of Francis Mark factor, Mark Anthony Santarina, Wynner Joshua Ramirez, Ramaya Ubando, Trixie Hervilla, Marvin Manapol, Erjan Orencia, Aizelyn Pedrosa, Celica Exteban, Melissa Cocneption, Danna Masilang, Jairell Nery.

Meanwhile, the College of Arts and Sciences Eagles came in second with jazzfunk-hiphop inspired number.

A powerful performance was delivered by the College of Nursing and Allied Medical Sciences Lions with a Pinoy hiphop ensemble.

The university gymnasium was heated up with cheers from the student of the college blaring to boost their team.

Garnering a total of 37 points, CBA Dragons landed on the championship spot as they proved their martial arts prowess in the dojang.

Meanwhile, the College of Nursing

and Allied Medical Sciences Lions roared by landing on the second place with 24 points.

The Sharks of College of Engineering made its way to be the third place by earning 12 points.

“Masaya, kasi nakita naming yung ilang linggo naming pinaghirapan. Sobrang thankful kami kay God dahil siya yung nagpanalo sa amin,” said Mia Obispo, one of the gold medalist players of CBA. Obispo said that the combined trainings and prayers made their way to lead among other colleges.

by Jan Adrian delos Santos After the heat-enduring championship game of lawn tennis on the third day of Palarong Wesleyan, Lions of the College of Nursing and Allied Medical Sciences and Dragons of the College of Business and Accountancy crashed their opponents to web the sports title.

Because of the agility shown by women Lions in the game, CONAMS ranked first swaying the performance of CBA and

Eagles of the College of Arts and Science, who secured the second and third spots.

But the defense of Dragons escalated in men’s division as they protected the first place, ruling before Lions and Sharks of the College of Engineering.

The final rankings were derived from the results of the elimination rounds of the game, wherein the winners in men and women’s division from singles and doubles units were compiled as one.

On singles rivalry, men Lions defeated CoEn but Dragons overpowered the capability of the players of CONAMS, while in women’s division, Dragons overthrew Lions who took over first them in the game before the finals.

Meanwhile, men Dragons controlled as well the game on doubles against Lions who smashed CoEn, but women Lions took revenge on Dragons after CoEn’s winning game over Eagles.

by Arjan Joe Coma Leading with eight points, the College of Criminal Justice Education (CCJE) Stallions seized the gold medal in Basketball – Men’s Division against the College of Hotel, Restaurant and Institution Management (CHRIM) Phoenix with the final score of 66-58.

CCJE broke the 27-27 tie in second quarter through wedging the score from third (44-36) and last quarter (66-58) of the game.

It was a back-to-back win for CCJE

after the fight last year against COEN White Sharks.

Herbert Cruz drove his two consecutive three-point-shot as a turning key to make an advantage contrary to the opponent.

CHRIM Phoenix pressed for their teamwork and focus to win the battle but up to no avail.

presence of mind shown by the team.

Lady Sharks emerge victors in table tennis

by Kevin Frany The College of Engineering White Sharks and College of Business and Accountancy Dragons bested out all the other teams and emerged as champions in respectively men’s and women’s table tennis.

The Sharks dragged the other men’s teams in the depths of defeat as they conquered the games with zero defeat in the elimination round while the lady Dragons burned their opponents in both the singles and doubles competition.

The College of Criminal Justice Education headed up against the Sharks in the semi-finals hoping for victory only to find out it was of no avail, proving the Sharks right to go head-to-head versus the College of Arts and Sciences Eagles for the championship.

In the distaff division, the lady Dragons edged out the opposition against the Stallions in the semi-finals giving them a spot to head out again against the Eagles

in the championship match.

The College of Arts and Sciences Eagles gave impressive nail-to-nail matches in the championship against the Sharks and Dragons for the respective divisions but ended up at second place for both divisions.

However, the Dragons claimed the third spot for the men’s division while the College of Education Jaguars ended up third in the women’s division.

The table tennis matches were done in two sets of single round-robin tournaments, also called all-play-all tournament, wherein each team meets all other teams in turn. Each set has four college teams competing against each other.

The winners of each set were determined with the number of victories in the round-robin tournaments and the two highest earners headed out against the winners of the other set for the semifinals.

The College of Nursing and Allied Medical Sciences Lions came in second with 239 points and the College of Engineering (COE) Sharks rose as third with 221 points.

The College of Criminal Justice and Education Stallions (CCJE) was able to rise in the fourth place with 209.5 points The CCJE Stallions were able to step up this year showing a great improvement in the games, with only a couple of points short from the COE Sharks.

Meanwhile, the College of Hotel Restaurant and Institution Management Phoenix were able to secure themselves in fifth place with 169 points.

The College of Education Jaguars were in the sixth place with 158 points and the College of Computer Studies Tiger fell in the seventh position with 119 points.

Meanwhile the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) Eagles once again found themselves at the bottom of the final tally with a total of 96 points, falling flat on the eight spot despite the high rankings in the first three competitions of the opening program.

In an interview with Stallions chess team captain Laking, he confessed that they were upset after only coming second place in last year’s intramurals, so they started practicing early so they would be

Meanwhile Lady Jaguars Cherissa Pascual, Christina Abesamis, Dianalyn Gabutin, and Mary Let Allaire were able to dethrone the defending champions, the CBA Lady Dragons, who came second this year.

Tigers takraw spikers hatch second championship title

by Anne Klein Roque College of Computer Studies managed to rose their triumph in two-day long Sepak Takraw Championship held last September 19-20 in front of High School Building of the university.

Reaping 2 sets for Tigers against a set for Dragons from the third regu made them victorious.

The Tigers claimed the first regu and due to the bad weather, the game was postponed and continued the next day.

But the second regu went to the Dragons.

The tension was high between the two teams for the third regu as the Dragons scored 16 and Tigers scored 14 in the first set of the 3rd regu.

The Tigers coped up at second set scoring 9 for the Dragons and 15 for Tigers.

Set 3 was even more intense as the

Dragons were ahead but when they changed court, Tigers managed to catch up and a mistake from the Dragons broke the tie to 13-15 making the Tigers as champion.

Despite the tension of their edgy opponent, the College of Business and Accountancy with a two-point verge, the Tigers gave their best shots to grab the championship title, proving their agility succeeding behind the Dragons.

The team event went out with the players of 3 per team. The game consisted of 3 regu having two sets and a third to break a tie. The team winning two regus would be declared as champion.

The game requires the players to use their head, knee, foot or even chest but not their hands when passing the ball.

Not more than three touches are allowed before it can be passed to the opponent.

Eagles dance sport pair achieves grand slam

by Brenda Lynne Aguilar The College of Arts and Sciences Eagles proved that it is a ballroom dancing royalty as it claimed the dance sport title for the third time on the first day of this year’s Palaro.

Jim Aldrin San Jose and Jenica Canicosa, both Psychology majors, performed a sultry rhumba number for their final performance which caught the judges’ eyes paving the way for the Eagles’ victory.

The College of Business and Accountancy Dragons danced cha-cha for their final performance and won second place with Kathleen Eugenio and Darius Dy.

Meanwhile, Jessica Andaya and John Joseph Rosaros from the College of Nursing and Allied Medical Sciences Lions placed third.

The other pairs came from the College of Education Jaguars and the College of Engineering Sharks.

The dance sport category was done in two sets of performances. The first set had the pairs simultaneously performing jive, rhumba, and cha-cha.

The second set took the pairs in center stage as each pair owned the dance floor with their designated performance.

“Lahat ng napanalunan namin ay para sa CAS at higit sa lahat, para sa Maykapal”, San Jose said in an interview.

Wesleyan tankers unfazed despite storm warning

by Krizel Cunanan The odds may not have been in their favor, but the contenders of the swimming events braved out an imminent threat just to push the event through come hell or high water.

Despite the bad weather caused by tropical storm Mario, the swimming competition was still on last September 19, fourth day of this year’s Palarong Wesleyan.

Classes were suspended by the provincial and city government unit early

in the morning of September 19 when information came that tropical storm Mario would pass through Cabanatuan.

Regardless of the announcements of both the provincial and city government, the swimming competition still proceeded and was held at the Provincial Sports Complex in Palayan City.

In an interview with Professor Paulo Alejo, the in-charge in the swimming competition, he said that there were no orders from the administration that they should suspend the competition.

According to Alejo, the organizers wanted to continue the swimming competition despite the bad weather because the coaches wanted to go on with the swimming event. Alejo claimed that he asked the coaches for the decision.

“Habang walang order dito sa Wesleyan na hindi tuloy, tinuloy pa rin namin.” he added.

He also said that when they heard about the news of the tropical storm, majority of the contenders were already in the venue and they did not really feel the gravity of

the weather until later on.

“Ang swimming competition naman, okay naman nung time na yun dahil maganda naman ang panahon noon sa Palayan kaya okay naman sila at walang nangyaring ‘di maganda,” Alejo ended.

Meanwhile, the College of Business and Accountancy dominated the swimming competition gathering a total of 107 point.

The College of Engineering White Sharks won the baseball championship for the fourth consecutive year after opposing the College of Criminal Justice Education Stallions with a score of 2-1 in Palayan City last September 18, fourth day Palarong Wesleyan 2014.

The game was a round-robin format, each competitor plays in turn against every other. As the first match start, the College of Computer Studies Tigers seized against Hotel and Restaurant Institution Management Phoenix, Final score is 8-7.

Though, the CCJE Stallions pulverized the College of Business and Administration Dragons with the lead of 4 as Dragons produced nothing.

Meanwhile, the CoEn White Sharks defeated the Tigers, 10-0 was the result on that match. The next game was HRIM Phoenix and CBA Dragons faceoff. The score is 9-10, success over Phoenix.

As White Sharks advanced to the final game between Stallions, It was became a very close game. But Stallions could not generate any offense in the winner-takeall matched as White Sharks copped the trophy with 2-1 as the final score.

by Jhon Mark Paynor After two days of catching and throwing the disc, the College of Business and Accountancy (CBA) men team and the College of Engineering (CoE) women team won the first Frisbee title.

championship was held first starting with the battle between the CoE and CCJE. But in the middle of the game, the rain began to fall, but still, the game still continued making it hard for the players to run.

The rain stopped as the timer also hit zero which signified that the game was already over.

The CoE claimed the first ever title in Frisbee Women. Meanwhile, the CCJE and CBA women came as second and third respectively.

Following the women’s Frisbee championship is the Men’s Frisbee championship, where a very close fight between the CBA and CoE men’s Frisbee

team happened. With just 10 seconds left , the score placed as 8-9 favouring CBA team. But with a long throw from CoE, one of them tumbled into the water just to catch the disc. And luckily, the Dragon made it, forcing five minutes over time.

Over Time Period

After the five-minute overtime period, the CBA Dragons men’s Frisbee team clutched the first ever title for men’ Frisbee team followed by CoE and CCJE who ranked second and third respectively.

According to some spectators, they are looking forward for the future of the game in the University, since it was the first time to be part of the Palarong Wesleyan.

Despite of the support given by his administration for sports activities, University President Pacifico B. Aniag still emphasized the importance of studies on his inspirational speech during the opening program of intramurals last September 16.

The president said that although the administration backs the development of such university commotions, they will not let the academic activities of the students suffer.

“We are in academic environment. May mas mahalaga kesa sa sports. Wag nyong kalimutan ang inyong pag-aaral,” he said.

Aniag also added that he will not tolerate that the academic activities will be compromised because of the students’ love for sports.

“Dapat maging maliwanag sa ating lahat, dito sa ating university, ang unang bibigyan natin ng pansin at importansya ay ang inyong pag-aaral,” he stressed out.

Meanwhile, the president also highlighted the on-going renovation of the university gymnasium. He said that the place will be centralized by the following week, as the installation of air conditions will take place.

“Tulad ng sinabi ko last year, ipapaaircon ko ‘yung gym. Pinaaayos ‘yan ngayon kaya di gaanong mainit. Hindi lang umabot ngayong intrams. Pero next week, may aircon na ‘to,” he stated.

Aniag opened that the expenses for the renovation is big, so he settled in an arrangement wherein all the school officials and students would feel comfortable for the intramurals.

He also revealed that the range of the gymnasium stage will be reduced to achieve the standard area of a basketball court.

On the other hand, the president and the Office of the Student Affairs Director Elgin Paguirigan led the recognition ceremony for all the teaching staff incharged in the university intramurals and athletes who competed in the National Private Schools Athletic Association last April.
