Down by the Liffeyside: Traditional Music in Dublin raditional Music has always been alive and cherished in Dublin. Each talk will include audio, video and live performances to illustrate an aspect of traditional music and the audience is encouraged to join in the singing – song-sheets will be provided.

Liam O’Connor Fiddle Music in Dublin Tuesday 4 October 2016 1.10-1.50 p.m.

iam is a highly regarded fiddle player from a celebrated Dublin musical family and has a MA in Folklore. He will draw on material in the National Folklore Collections including the earliest known recordings of people like Mrs Kenny. Liam’s talk will be followed by Fergus Russell singing ‘Rags upon the Poddle’ – please join in. Fergus is a singer, collector and songwriter, and a Committee member of An Góilín Traditional Singers’ Club and the Howth Singing Circle. His CD, Landless & Free, was launched in 2015 to critical acclaim.

Terry Moylan Dublin's Piping Tradition Tuesday 11 October 2016 1.10-1.50 p.m.

erry is Archivist to Na Piobairi Uileann and has published widely on songs, piping and musicology. Terry is a Dubliner, and a lover of every aspect of Ireland's traditional music. He is a piper, a dancer and a singer, and has published works on Irish music, dance and song, most recently The Indignant Muse: Poetry and Songs of the Irish Revolution 1887-1926, (Lilliput, Dublin, 2016). Terry’s talk will be followed by Anne Buckley singing ‘The Night Before Larry was stretched.’,Anne, who works in Dublin City Libraries, was reared in a rural area, surrounded by ‘singing and battering the stone floor with the hobnailed boots’. A regular at An Góilín Traditional Singers’ Club, she met Frank Harte and got ‘The Night Before Larry Was Stretched’ from him’.

Sean Corcoran The Tradition Club, 1967-1989 Tuesday 18 October 2016 1.10-1.50 p.m.

ean Corcoran is known internationally as one of the leading singers in the Hiberno-English and Gaelic traditions and also as a researcher and teacher. He is a founder-member of Cran which are a unique group in the Irish folkmusic world with their highly-individualistic approach and a bewildering array of styles and repertoire. His talk will be followed by ‘Dark Horse on the Wind’ sung by Aoife Dermody. Aoife is a traditional singer and fiddler hailing from Dublin via East Galway. She has been a featured singer in the South Roscommon Singers Circle, Dublin’s Grand Folk Club, Granby Park Music Festival, the Steeple Sessions and at St. Patricks Festival, Bucharest.

Francy Devine ‘We’re glad you passed this way, Luke Kelly’ Tuesday 25 October 2016 1.10-1.50 p.m.

rancy Devine, former Trade Union Official with the ITGWU/SIPTU and labour historian, has published two collections of poetry and, in 2014 with Steve Byrne & Friends, issued the CD My Father Told Me. Among many published works, he was also editor of the best-selling A Capital in Conflict: Dublin and the 1913 Lock-Out. Francy’s talk will be followed by Dave O’Connor singing ‘Hannah Healy: the Pride of Howth’. Councillor Dave O’Connor is a former Mayor of Fingal and is a noted traditional singer, particularly of songs from North County Dublin, and is a member of the Fingal Mummers.
