The Bradley Farm Partnership exemplifies how the combination of Sexcel® Sexed Genetics and Genus ABS beef semen can increase on-farm profitability and efficiency. Implementing a Sexcel and beef breeding strategy produces heifer replacements using the best possible genetics, whilst the sale of beef x dairy calves offers an additional source of income. The Bradley family from Camelford, Cornwall, have 900 Holsteins, with 750 currently milking through a 60-point rotary parlour. The herd currently averages 9,500 litres at 4.2% butterfat and 3.5% protein. On farm, they adhere to strict breeding criteria. All heifers are served with three straws of dairy Sexcel and then beef. They use Reproductive Management Systems (RMS) on all heifers to optimise their reproductive performance. 30 cows of the highest genetic merit are selected per month to receive Sexcel, the rest are served to beef. They are currently achieving the same conception rate for both Sexcel and beef product. Beef sires are selected for below-breed average calving ease, a short gestation length and fertility. Calf quality is important as beef x dairy calves are sold privately off the farm at 10-12 weeks old. Nine months ago, the Bradley’s joined the Genus ABS Beef Cornerstone Breeding Club and are currently allocated 20 straws of British Blue semen per month.

How we test our beef sires on dairy cows: Beef Cornerstone™ facilitates the testing of Genus ABS Beef sires through our Beef Calving Survey which has been in place for over 40 years. We test over 20 young beef sires annually with over 800 customers actively involved. We collect real world data on our beef bulls to test their performance on dairy cows and ensure we are supplying reliable beef sires to our dairy customers. We pride ourselves on having the worlds best Beef on Dairy testing programme, achieving this by selecting only the best beef sires and rejecting the bulls not reaching our high standards.

What is NuEra Profit Index ? Introducing NuEraTM Profit, Genus ABS’ unique index to evaluate beef progeny performance through finishing to slaughter in a beef cross dairy system. This new index is designed to show beef finishers and processors the most profitable genetics within a breed to show the additional profitability that high index sires will deliver*.
How does it work? NuEra Profit index utilises real world data collected from multiple external sources, including industry stakeholders we are working with and current economic values to identify the most profitable and efficient beef genetics.
