Every two years, thousands of people from across industry, academia, research and government, including the users, developers and manufacturers of ocean technology, gather in London to be inspired and see what’s new, connect with new and existing contacts, learn industry trends and socialise. What can you expect this year? The world-class exhibition features 480 exhibiting companies, partners and stakeholders from 79 countries ranging from primary manufacturers and suppliers of ocean technology, platforms, components and instrumentation to global service providers and contractors. Our three-day technical conference kicks off this morning in South Gallery Rooms 1-10 with multiple tracks covering a variety of end-use and discipline-focused topics, including Oil and Gas, Marine Renewables, Imaging & Metrology, Unmanned Vehicles & Vessels and Ocean Observation & Sensing. Today will also see the launch of the newly formed Ocean Futures Forum, taking place above the Boulevard in the Platinum Lounge; tickets are available from main registration. This forms an integral piece of the Oi18 content programme, bringing together senior strategists and heads of business to discuss long-term energy trends, ocean growth, diversification and sustainability. It includes speakers such as Claire Jolly, head of innovation policies for
space and ocean at OECD, and Prof Ed Hill, executive director of NOC. Once again, we have a full programme of dockside survey and research vessels, subsea equipment demonstrations and the latest in ASV technology, all being displayed live, in and on the waters of the Royal Victoria Dock. And don’t forget we will continue with an array of content throughout the week, including holding the Catch the Next Wave conference on the final day. It will examine the intrinsic relationship between exploration and technology and how each drives the other. Pairs of leading explorers and senior technologists will discuss the role technology has played in man’s ability to explore environments on the seafloor, in the ocean, over the ocean and into space. Join us and be enthralled by the likes of James Cameron, creator and director of Avatar, Dr Michael Gernhardt, NASA astronaut, and Rory Golden, diver and explorer, to name but a few. Today’s Oi18 Conference Programme at a Glance Make the most of this great opportunity to learn, debate and network at the world-class Oi18 conference, which connects delegates with trends and developments in the marine, offshore and subsea sectors. Over the next three days of technical updates and case studies on the latest marine technology and ocean science R&D, applications and best practices, this year’s technical tracks will cover advancements in hydrography & geophysics and unmanned vehicles & vessels, to name but a few. Hydrography, Geophysics & Geotechnics The conference programme gets under way today with a Hydrography, Geophysics & Geotechnics track, chaired by Andy Hill, who is marine geohazard technical authority at BP Exploration, Richard Salisbury, a senior consultant at Fugro and Mick Cook, Director, MCL Consultancy. This session will discuss data collation and examination methods used in mapping offshore seabed and sub-seabed environments, highlighting the benefits such studies confer upon the renewables, oil & gas, marine and coastal construction, telecommunications and seafloor mining industries. Aquaculture Elsewhere at Oi18 today, the Aquaculture track traces the ongoing development of marine aquaculture facilities and the consequent ramifications for the offshore aquaculture industry. This track will be chaired by Lawrie Stove, managing director at AquaMoor, David Kelly, CEO and CTO of
InnovaSea, and Keith Jeffery, aquaculture development officer at Cefas.

Ocean Futures Forum Starting at 9:30 am, this morning’s new, half-day forum on Ocean Futures will bring together senior strategists and heads of business to hear and discuss the emerging requirements for technology across key offshore industries, as well emerging initiatives stimulating technology innovation. Unmanned Vehicles & Vessels The concluding session today will be Part One of the Unmanned Vehicles & Vessels track. Chaired by Steve Hall, CEO of SUT, Dan Hook, managing director of ASV Global, and Prof Russell Wynn, chief scientist of NOC’s Marine Autonomous and Robotic Systems group, this track will examine the potential dividends arising from the current and projected

Pushing the Frontiers of Ocean Exploration At Oceanology International’s Catch the Next Wave, XPRIZE will award US $1 million to be split equally amongst nine finalist teams in the Shell Ocean Discovery XPRIZE. The theme for the day is ‘Frontiers of Exploration’ and is sponsored by The Explorers Club. The focus of Catch the Next Wave aligns with the impacts that this global competition is designed to achieve: to advance and highlight technologies that allows us to explore, whether that be in space or in the ocean.

After a semi-final competition round that saw its fair share of ups and downs, these nine teams have successfully demonstrated their entries to the independent and international seven-member judging panel, and have now qualified to move on to the final round. The initial Round 1 semi-finals test was to take place off Puerto Rico, but following the devastating hurricanes in September 2017 it was clear that the plan had to change. XPRIZE revised Round 1 into a Technology Readiness Test, and XPRIZE staff and judges conducted site visits between November 2017 and February 2018.

The nine teams of finalists – ranging from university students and professors to groups of professional deep-sea operational experts, and even a (currently) one-man team – are remarkable for their diversity in make-up, approaches and innovations. Above-seasurface components of the entries include an aerial drone and a range of autonomous docking and deployment surface vessels. For the sub-surface components, competing alongside more traditional AUVs are smaller units working in swarms to map the sea floor quickly and cheaply. Teams are also exploring the possibility of mapping the sea floor in

As a consequence of the hurricanes, the initial test for this Bonus Prize was decoupled from the primary competition. The technology being incentivised will give the industry the ability to detect a chemical or biological signal underwater and autonomously trace it to its source.
The audacious challenge the nine finalists face in the second and final round is exponentially greater: a real-world challenge in which they will have to map at least 50% of a 500km2 area at 5m or higher horizontal resolution at 4,000m depth and collect ten images, all within 24 hours. These teams will be doubling their efforts over the next few months as they prepare to compete for the remaining US $5 million grand prize purse focused on mapping and imagery.
The technologies that these teams are developing will provide easier access to remote regions of the ocean. They will be
instrumental in achieving the ultimate Nippon Foundation-GEBCO Seabed 2030 goals: to have a high-resolution map of the entire seafloor by 2030. This vision is shared by XPRIZE. The nine finalist teams, with team members from 25 countries, are now preparing to take another giant step as we continue to push the ‘Frontiers of Exploration’. Dr Jyotika Virmani is senior director for planet & environment at XPRIZE and prize lead for the Shell Ocean Discovery XPRIZE. Dr Virmani has over a decade of professional experience in oceanography. She has a PhD in physical oceanography from the University of South Florida, USA.
Closing Keynote at Oi18 Dr Virmani will give a closing keynote at Catch The Next Wave on Thursday 15 March from 16.00-17.00 to formally recognise the Shell Ocean Discovery XPRIZE finalists and the Milestone Prize winners who will be going on to the final round of the competition.

Fugro’s AUV Images Bring Search for Lost Sub AE1 to Successful Close

Fugro’s role in an expedition to find HMAS AE1 has helped to solve Australia’s oldest naval mystery, 103 years after the First World War Australian submarine vanished off Rabaul, Papua New Guinea. In waters over 300 metres deep, Fugro deployed its autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) from Survey Vessel Fugro Equator. On 19 December 2017 an object of interest was located, and further inspection confirmed that it was AE1. Using specialised survey technology, including a multibeam echosounder mounted on the hull of Fugro Equator and its AUV, Echo Surveyor 5, Fugro scanned the seafloor to collect detailed data. The AUV flew at a constant altitude of 35 metres, through strong undersea currents and the complex terrain of the search area located between two land masses. The resulting 1-metre resolution images provided confidence that positive identification of targets could be made. Following analysis of the data, unusual features were catalogued, assessed and prioritised for additional detailed investigation that included AUV and drop camera operations. The first images captured show the vessel is remarkably well preserved and apparently in one piece.

EMODnet Bathymetry Workshop on a Harmonised Digital Terrain Model for European Sea Oceanology International 2018 features an EMODnet Bathymetry Workshop which will provide an overview and demonstrations of the current portal and interactive services for viewing and downloading the harmonised EMODnet Bathymetry digital terrain model
(DTM) for the European sea regions. The approach and progress of the ongoing development for the improved DTM and additional portal functionalities will be highlighted. In addition there will be an open discussion on extra user requirements and

Vessels As is the tradition, there are several vessels moored at the Royal Victoria Dock for the duration of Oi18. Visitors are welcomed to on board participating exhibitor vessels.
Patriot This vessel is only a few months old and it is built by Javelin International in Urk, The Netherlands. Oceanology International 2018: Surveying the Oceans with Enhanced Vision New Content and Parallel Events The keenly anticipated Oceanology International (Oi) 2018 exhibition and conference opens today here at ExCeL in London and runs until Thursday 15 March. Renowned thoroughout the marine industry as a benchmark for proffering business opportunities and showcasing evolving technologies, the Oi portfolio has expanded over time with the addition of the sister events Oi Americas and Oi China. This year’s Oi London show looks likely to set a new record regarding attendance numbers, with more than 480 exhibitors and 79 countries represented. For 2018, the emphasis is firmly focused on technological developments including autonomous systems, advanced sensors and robotics. The comprehensive event programme represents a unique forum for the exchange of accumulated knowledge, networking, access to the latest technology and new international market opportunities.
Conference In ExCeL’s South Gallery, the Oi18 conference programme has a series of linked, free-toattend Technical Tracks at its core. “The Technical Tracks enable authoritative speakers and informed attendees from interlinked professional backgrounds to trade insights, discuss challenges and brainstorm potential solutions in real detail,” says Ellen Burgess, conference manager. The Technical Tracks schedule gets under way today with the Hydrography, Geophysics & Geotechnics track (South Gallery Rooms 7 & 8, 10.00-17.25). Today’s session will look at the methods of data collection and analysis required to map offshore seabed and sub-seabed environments. The track will
subsequently detail the myriad ways in which the resultant data benefits the seafloor mining, marine and coastal construction, oil & gas, telecommunications and renewables industries. Also today, the Ocean Observation & Sensing track (South Gallery Room 5, 10.00-17.15) will assess advances in the monitoring of ocean physics, chemistry and biology that could have a constructive effect on current weather, ocean and climate models. Two further tracks round out today’s programme: the Offshore Aquaculture track (South Gallery Room 9, 10.00-17.10) and Part One of the Unmanned Multi-Vehicles & Vessels track (South Gallery Rooms 3 and 4, 13.00-16.55).

Looking ahead to tomorrow, Wednesday 14 March, delegates can attend Part Two of the Unmanned Multi-Vehicles & Vessels track (South Gallery Rooms 3 and 4, 10.00-15.55) or the Oil & Gas track (South Gallery Rooms 7 and 8, 10.00-17.00). Tomorrow’s schedule also includes two completely new Technical Tracks – Ocean Information & Communications Technology (South Gallery Room 9, 10.00-14.30) and Underwater Imaging & Metrology (South Gallery Room 5, 10.00-17.00). The latter, divided into three sessions, will be co-chaired by Simon Waterfield, Head of Survey Support Group at Sonardyne, and Blair Cunningham, President of Technology & Divisional CEO of Coda Octopus Products. This technological showcase will focus upon the practical and economic benefits of real-time imaging in offshore and construction activities. The Technical Tracks schedule concludes on Thursday 15 March with the Navigation & Positioning track (South Gallery Rooms 3 and 4, 10.00-15.25) and another new track, Marine Renewables (South Gallery Rooms 7 and 8, 10.00-16.25). The Oi18 conference programme is additionally bolstered by parallel showcases, beginning with today’s half-day Ocean Futures Forum (Platinum Suite, 9.30-13.30), assessing long-term energy trends, ocean growth and diversification and sustainability. The event includes a networking lunch. A groundswell of interest and the everincreasing necessity for communications, marine and ocean IT, satellite and data solutions has brought about the Ocean ICT Expo, drawing upon the collective expertise of hundreds of IT and data professionals. And
for providers of new technologies who might be seeking potential sources of partner funding, the Entrepreneurs’ Advisory Workshop in the Investment, Trade & Innovation Theatre offers industry-specific advice and guidance. Furthermore over the next three days, the co-located Interspill conference and exhibition (also running until 15 March) will serve as a networking forum for oil spill industry professionals, academics and government representatives. Exhibition Many of the 500-plus exhibitors are familiar faces at Oceanology International, attracted time after time by the quality of visitors to the event. “We have an unrivalled track record of almost 40 years with offshore CPT technology and lead the market with new developments. Oi18 provides us the arena to display our experience and, as Oi18 attracts visitors that match our global presence, we just feel we need to be there,” comments Mark Woollard, commercial director of A.P van den Berg, a Dutch firm providing equipment for core penetration testing (CPT). “We think personal contact in our specialised market is very important,” he adds. Krista Brunette, marketing coordinator for the Canadian oceanographic instrument manufacturing company RBR Ltd (Stand G551), agrees. “Exhibiting at Oi18 allows us to connect with many of our customers, our agents and other industry professionals. It also allows RBR to be ‘discovered’ by attendees, perhaps considering our instruments for future projects and deployments.”
Many exhibitors will be hosting demonstrations of their products, either on the stand or on the water, as ExCeL London is advantageously situated next to the Royal Victoria Dock. “We will feature examples of realised custom projects at our stand,” says Francesca Faverio, marketing and business development manager of the Italian bespoke cable design and manufacturing firm Novacavi (Stand N200). “Our team will be pleased to answer any questions about our activity.” Meanwhile, Steven Pasco from the Sales and Marketing department of RTSYS (Stand J551) in France, which specialises in underwater acoustics and sonars, reveals that the company “will be giving a presentation of the MSFD [the EU’s Marine Strategy Framework Directive], its stakes and why our recorders are qualified for this directive. We will also present our latest innovations regarding data storage, data acquisition, processing and display. The third demo will be on underwater acoustics communications and its applications in our products.” Elsewhere in the exhibition, the Chinese firm CHC Navigation (Stand A109), which manufactures GPS and GNSS receivers and provides complete positioning systems for surveying, construction, GIS and marine applications in more than 100 countries, will be bringing the most popular products from its appearance at Oi China 2017 to London. And, celebrating its 40th anniversary, Denmark’s EIVA a/s (Stand D500) will be presenting a new deep learning software solution. It will also hold demonstrations of its NaviSuite software products for subsea and above-water engineering and surveying tasks.
