Oi18 – The Home of Innovation After just one day of Oi18, it’s clear to see that innovation in marine and subsea technology is in no danger of slowing down. From new marine robots and sophisticated sensors to digital platforms and communication solutions, Oi18 has already proven itself as a milestone event for companies and organisations wanting to get ahead of the curve in what is happening in the incredibly broad ocean industry. From the very moment that the doors opened yesterday, hundreds (and by lunchtime, thousands!) of visitors spilled out onto the show floor, where nearly 500 exhibitors had prepared a hugely diverse display of stands featuring their latest developments. It’s fantastic to see people’s enthusiasm for being here in London – from the exhibitors and visitors to the huge line-up of conference speakers and, of course, the organiser’s team. The conference itself has proven to be exceptional so far, with all speakers providing in-depth insights and knowledge about their specialist areas. While it’s impossible to single out highlights due to the tremendous quality of the programme overall, it was pleasing to see that all of the technical tracks were well attended. It goes to show that whatever part of the marine technology world you work in, learning about innovation and applications from peers and colleagues is still high on the agenda. While the diverse technical tracks are enabling Oi18 delegates to drill down to very specific areas of interest, including cores disciplines such as ocean observation and sensing, unmanned vehicles and hydrography, geophysics and geotechnics, it was good to see several more ‘emerging’ topics also getting some much deserved focus on the first day. In addition to an expanded aquaculture technical track, yesterday marked the Oi debut for a brand-new topic: Ocean ICT. Taking the form of an open theatre space, Ocean ICT gave exhibitors the chance to present their latest technologies and services related to marine and ocean IT, communications, satellite and data systems. Ocean ICT is the response to a shift in the industry where the ability to access data immediately, and the amounts of data accessible, changed the way we operate in the ocean. Looking back at day one, Oi18 is living up to its promise as the leading destination for the global marine technology and ocean community, and there is still a lot more in store – two further days packed with more conference content, new technology and networking opportunities, and that’s just for starters!

ASV Global Working on Containerised Autonomous Marine Laboratory for Developing Countries Stand G401 ASV Global is working with the National Oceanography Centre (NOC) to develop a containerised autonomous marine laboratory for use in developing countries. The project is part of the Commonwealth Marine Economies (CME) programme, a UK government-funded programme which aims to support Commonwealth Small Island Developing States (SIDS) develop and sustain marine economies by ensuring the marine resources that belong to them are better understood and managed. One output of this programme is the development of a containerised autonomous marine environmental laboratory (CAMEL) that will be utilised by the CME delivery partners – namely the NOC, the UK Hydrographic Office and the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (Cefas) – to map and monitor hydrographic, oceanographic and geophysical parameters as part of a range of high-quality marine science datasets and providing valuable training as part of capacity-building efforts.
The system, housed in a pair of 20-foot containers, will provide a complete autonomous survey and data collection solution to SIDS. The CAMEL system will comprise an ASV ‘C-Worker 4’ autonomous vessel complete with a range of hydrographic, geophysical and oceanographic sensors. A built-in mission control facility will enable users to operate the ASV and its sensors over a radio communications link as well as review and process the data gathered.
The diesel-powered C-Worker 4 will be capable of being launched from a beach trailer to collect coastal data. Its water-jet propulsion makes it an ideal solution for shallow-water surveys. The vessel will be able to operate continuously for periods of up to 48 hours. Upon delivery of the CAMEL system, the SIDS marine community will receive full training by specialist ASV Global autonomous vessel operators and NOC scientists.

Planet Ocean Delivers RADAC WaveGuide Onboard System to Fugro at Oi18
Stand K100
Planet Ocean Ltd. is handing over its most recent RADAC system to global geointelligence provider Fugro at Oi18, as part of a framework agreement to provide WaveGuide Onboard systems for selected Fugro vessels. The handover is the fourth system to be delivered under the agreement. A modified WaveGuide radar wave sensor is installed on the bow of the ship. The sensor uses radar to measure distance to the water surface. A motion sensor is incorporated into the radar unit to compensate for the vertical motions of the radar itself so it measures the waves the ship is actually experiencing.
Thereafter Fugro can also derive freeboard/air gap and draft parameters.
RADAC WaveGuide.
Mr Michael Quinnell, manager of Fugro’s Offshore Systems department, comments: “The data provided is used both onshore and offshore in a number of ways, but providing unambiguous wave measurements for assessment of operational safety limits is key for Fugro. Other uses include aiding the deployment and recovery of ROV and AUV technology as well as providing useful survey data without the need to deploy wave measuring buoys.” RADAC WaveGuide sensors are maintenance free, easy to install, low power and available in explosion-proof certified versions for use in hazardous environments.

R2Sonic Introduces Integrated Sediment Profiler (ISP)
Integrated Sediment Profiler (ISP).
R2Sonic has introduced the new Integrated Sediment Profiler (ISP), based on a one-system-fits-all-applications concept. The same unit can be installed and operated on AUVs, ROVs and/or surface vessels, which provides flexibility and versatility of use. In all cases, the ISP only requires connection to a sonar interface module (SIM), SIM stack or ROV Mux for power and communication. The ISP is a standalone product designed to integrate and synchronise seamlessly with any R2Sonic wideband multibeam echosounder system (MBES). It meets the needs of survey professionals who are looking for a cost-effective and easy way to acquire both multibeam and sediment profile data simultaneously, without interference and in a single survey.
Stand J100
The ISP is a parametric system operating at frequencies between 5kHz and 20kHz and the beam width is ±1.5°. The combination of low frequency and small footprint ensures incomparable resolution and excellent sediment penetration as deep as 40m. Additional technical characteristics: • 4,000m depth rated (will be extended to 6,000m) • Low power consumption: 60W • Sediment penetration: up to 40m • Three-year warranty
Rockland and Alseamar Partnership Pays Off At Oi16, Rockland Scientific and Alseamar agreed on a joint R&D programme to develop a turbulence sensor payload for the Alseamar SeaExplorer glider. The first customer conducted the first successful deployments with the sensor payload, the MicroRider-SE, on the SeaExplorer in June 2017 and the following winter. At Oi18, the two companies are presenting the results of their partnership including a demonstration model of the glider and sensor payload on display at the Alseamar stand. In June 2017, a research team from the Atmosphere & Ocean Research Institute (AORI) of the University of Tokyo successfully deployed a SeaExplorer in the Kuroshio current, collecting microstructure turbulence data, amongst other parameters. The SeaExplorer was able to smoothly navigate in one of the strongest currents on Earth, with surface velocities sometimes up to four knots, with a large sensor payload. In addition to the
flight dynamics, the SeaExplorer’s one-litre buoyancy engine proved helpful when facing strong density gradients.
Stand E500 AORI’s SeaExplorer is fitted with the MicroRider-SE payload (for turbulence), a Nortek Signature ADCP (for currents), a WetLabs Triplet (for chlorophyll-a, turbidity and CDOM), as well as a CT sensor and a Rinko optical DO sensor (from JFE Advantech, for temperature, salinity and oxygen). Major innovations for the SeaExplorer MicroRider-SE turbulence package are the low footprint integration of the microstructure probes in the front nose cone of the glider and the addition of an EM current sensor (velocimeter) to directly measure the axial speed of the glider.
The AORI SeaExplorer’s path along the Kuroshio current (red pins are waypoints the glider was asked to follow; white pins are actual glider surfacings).
The collected data is now being processed by AORI team with Rockland support, forming part of a wider study on turbulent mixing generated by the Kuroshio current.

Tomorrow: Training Workshop on Interoperability Technologies for Sharing Ocean Instruments and Real-time Data On Thursday 15 March, a training workshop on the interoperability technologies for sharing ocean instruments and real-time data will be organised at Oi18. This workshop will demonstrate, in the field, new interoperability tools that have been developed and field-tested for ocean sensor and real-time data sharing. These software and firmware tools have been implemented on different platforms and sensors. They are available open-source and now require substantially less engineering time than in the past.
The training will also help those interested in participating in an interoperability experiment in the field, with the Atlantic Ocean as a region of interest and deployment, in the framework of AtlantOS. The workshop is open to ocean scientists, engineers and technicians from academia or industry who are dealing with in-situ sensor and observing systems. Participants will benefit from direct experience with the latest interoperability technologies.
