Renaissance Fair is a festival typically celebrating
the period of time during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I of England, though some other Renaissance fairs may celebrate different historical time periods. These fairs typically take place outside on a fair ground over the course of one or several weekends. The performers in a Renaissance Fair typically travel with the tour of the fair. These fairs are a place for musical acts, theatrical acts, jousting, games, food and the sale of arts and crafts
Renaissance fairs usually have a traveling troupe of costumed entertainers who perform historically-relevant tasks for event-goers. There is a wide assortment of characters, but usually there is a king and queen of the Renaissance fair, several knights, several peasants, wenches, jesters, and more. Many of these performers act out dangerous and skillful stunts like juggling, knife throwing and fire breathing. The fairs are known for their medieval qualities which feature games that involve throwing weaponry like axes or bows and arrows, scantily clad women and performers and medieval legends in the form of acts and games.
Features Renaissance fairs are known for their specific entertainment, games, food, and style of dress. A usual Renaissance fair features food like smoked turkey legs and other festival foods, often given medieval-themed titles. A big draw for many adults at these fairs is specialty beers and meads which are inspired by medieval times. Jousting events usually take place between rival fair organizations. Both the paid performers and fair-goers are encouraged to be outfitted in medieval-style dress.
Geography Renaissance fairs are a distinctly American phenomenon. While it is not uncommon for other cultures around the world to perform reenactments rooted in other historical time periods, the actual features of the modernday Renaissance fair are strictly an American presence. The uniting of the features of an amusement park and department store combined within the parameters of a historical time period is unlike the more traditional historical reenactments of other cultures. History of The practice of Renaissance fairs were borne out of a newfound American interest in Renaissance culture after World War II. Folk musician John Langstaff hosted an event called “A Christmas Masque of Traditional Revels in New York City in 1957. This spawned similar events on very small scales like within classrooms by teachers who were using the format to teach their students. Eventually, the idea caught on and organizations formed to present these fairs in locations around the country.
Significance Renaissance fairs are significant because they offer a different type of entertainment for fair-goers. Instead of a regular amusement park which simply features rides, games and food, these fairs offer all of these things as well as some historical relevance. They are also a great place for interested consumers to purchase handmade wares by traditional and traditional-inspired local and traveling artisans. These fairs are frequented by so many because they typically feature entertainment for the whole family. Renaissance Faire (Ren Faire or just Faire) is an amalgam of many things. It is partly a craft fair, partly historical reenactment and partly performance art. People working at Faire dress in costumes (garb) typical of the late Elizabethan period. Booths sell crafts and food. Parades wind their way through the crowds. Jugglers, musicians, magicians, and other entertainers perform through the day. Your day is spent wandering about, examining wares, sampling foods, watching plays and performers, and of course drinking fyne English Ale.
If you’ve never been to a Faire, then its hard to convey a sense of it. Many people when they go for the first time are overcome by the sheer hubub of it all. Hawkers in the streets, ribbons and flags waving in the wind, the sound of bells lutes and ocarinas in the air, the lilt of foreign accents, the smell of cooking foods and flowers, the warmth of sun on your face and the wind in your hair. Entertainers may want to talk to you as the character they’re playing and vendors may insist the item you’re looking at was carried on the backs of explorers from the wilds of the far off Indies. What is the SCA? The SCA is the Society for Creative Anachronism, a group dedicated to researching and recreating the Middle Ages in the present. While there is some crossover between Faires and members of the SCA, the SCA hold events specifically for their members (although often the public is welcome). You’ll sometimes find SCA encampments at your local Faire. More information about the SCA can be found on the Rialto, which is the newsgroup rec.org.sca or from the SCA website.
The Elizabethan period spans her coronation in 1558 through her death in 1602. Queen Elizabeth I was born in 1533, child of King Henry VIII and his second wife Anne Boleyn. King Henry had previously married Catherine of Aragon. While Catherine gave Henry a daughter, Mary, she did not give birth to a surviving male heir. In Catholic England, divorce was not permissible but because Catherine had briefly been married to Henry’s elder brother Arthur, a Papal dispensation had been granted to permit the marriage in the first place. Henry wanted this dispensation to be ruled invalid thus invalidating the marriage and permitting him to marry Anne. The Pope stalled on the King’s Great Matter until Henry broke England away from Rome: creating Protestant England, absorbing Papal property, and granting himself a divorce in the process. This made Elizabeth, the issue from this second marriage, a controversial claimant to the throne.
In the event, Henry sired a son of his third wife Jane Seymore. Edward VI would take the throne upon Henry’s death. A sickly child, Edward died at 15, producing a small scuffle in the 9 day reign of Lady Jane Grey. Mary was the subsequent Queen and upon her death Elizabeth took the throne.
The biggest direct threat to the throne was Mary (Stuart), Queen of Scots. Mary was the great-granddaughter of Henry VII and niece of Henry VIII. Margaret Tudor, Henry VIII’s older sister, married James IV of Scotland. The Catholic interpretation of events held that (protestant) Elizabeth was illigitimate and as her (catholic) half-sister Mary I was dead, the next in line was Mary Stuart. Mary was briefly the Queen of France, but Francis II died very young and Mary returned to Scotland. She was forced to abdicate as Queen of Scotland in favor of her son James following her second husband’s murder. She fled to England, where she was again imprisoned, this time by Elizabeth. In the 20 years of Mary’s imprisonment, she was the convenient focal point of many plots. One was to marry her to Thomas Howard, the Duke of Norfolk -this led to Norfolk’s execution. Elizabeth is believed to have considered marrying her off to Robert Dudley (bringing the Scots under English rule). Mary was executed for treason after being set up (Babbington Plot). After Elizabeth’s death, Mary’s son, James VI of Scotland became James I of England.
Food Food in the Renaissance was very similar to what we eat today. People ate roasted meats, fish, and bread. They had carrots, beets, melons, apples and a variety of legumes. They drank beer and ale (typically a weak watery small beer), wine and cider. The wealthy could afford any variety of imported goods: spices, citrus, sweet sherry or madeira.
How Do I Find A Faire? Interested in going to Faire? Check the Faire Site Directory and contact the faire closest to you. Try contacting your local branch of the SCA. You can also check out the website: http://www.renfaire.com/Sites/index.html
What Do I Wear? As a patron you can wear whatever you please: there are no dress codes. That said, you may find yourself getting more into the mood if you dress up. Once at Faire you’ll find Pirates, Nobles, and even the occasional Klingon -- so don’t worry about standing out. Clothes that you may have that generally pass as faire-like include: Natural leather shoes, boots, and sandles Blowsy shirts in natural colors Natural leather vests Blowsy dresses in natural colors Snug fitting pants Straw hats
Larger faires often have clothing boothes where you can rent clothing for the day. Prices vary depending on the quality of the clothing, and changing in front of other people into unfamiliar clothing is always lots of fun! You can make your own clothing, or you can buy clothing at faire. Many many people go to faire, purchase outfits, and show up the following weekend wearing them.
Unlike today, there was no refrigeration save that of a cold root cellar. This meant that produce needed to be consumed as it came available or preserved by drying, pickling, salting or smoking. This made for a long hard winter until the spring harvest came in. Typically for the poor peasant this would mean eating whatever was just going rotten, and holding back the rest against the possibility of a late spring. All households kept a garden, even in the City proper, although the City suburbs provided the majority of its produce.
Ale! Here’s good luck to the Barley Mow! Ale had been made for centuries using only water, yeast, and roasted-malted (sprouted) barley. There are no small number of songs which celebrate the barley harvest and rightly so. Water being thought unsafe to drink (and sanitation being poor), the low alcohol of Ale made it a safe drink. Only the very poor drank water. Records suggest a gallon of ale a day was not an unusual consumption for the well-off. Ale would spoil and needed to be drunk quickly. Large houses brewed ale once a week.

Live Your Fantasy
K~nig~hit Khronicles It’s a beautiful warm evening as I take a seat with Drizzt on his patio. He’s enjoying some earl grey and I have my beloved coffee. We are going to delve into his history with Rennasance Faires and find out a little more about him. Vivi: Good evening Drizz, thank you for taking the time out for this interview Drizzt: it is my pleasure. i always enjoy talking about the Fairs Vivi: laughs. Yes you do. Why dont you tell us , how you got introduced to Renn Faires? Drizzt: well then i was about 10 my family moved out to Texas, and we always found interesting things like that to attend. my mother won tickets from a local radio station for Scarbough Fair which is just south of Dallas. the first time we went was the spring of 87 so i was 11 at the time. i had always been really big into the medievil times so it was a wonderland for me. to see the guys jousting and sword fighting, to watch the belly dancers.. my parents had to drag me out of there or i would have stayed forever Vivi: That would seem very magical to a rambuncious kid. So through a family outing you found the faire. Would you reccomend parents to take there kids to the faire in this day and time? Drizzt: oh Yes... it is very much a family oriented place. many of the items are made Just for the children. there are special events every day just for the kids. like having their pictures taken with the king and queen. many fairs will pull kids up to sit with the royal court at different events. i know that my home fair (scarbough) during the live chess match, they will normally pull several children up onto the board to “fight” the actors., and many times have at least one young girl to stand with the queen. most of the games and rides are designed for kids. there are shops that do nothing but make items for the little princes and princesses
Vivi: aww , it does sound like a great place to take your kids. Let’s move forward a bit. Through your younger years you attended the faires and ended up actually working at them. Would you tell us a bit about that transition? Drizzt: well my first year working at one was when i was 16 or 17.. i can’t really rememebr i just know my folks had to sign a waver to allow me to stay out there on the weekends. it was great time for me. though it took a while for me to build up my outfits. my first one was kinda pathetic in all honesty. but it got the job done for that first few weekends. all in all my job out there paid for me being there and that was about it Vivi: I bet you had to do alot of research so you could be historicly accurate correct? Drizzt: not at first.. most of the young ones were couched there at the fairs. as an employee they have you attend a class on how to talk, how to dress, and such. i think the first year i went there was a weekend event for the employee’s just to learn all this Vivi: Interesting. So should we brush up on our Shakespeare before going to a Faire? Drizzt: oh no.. the people attending the fair can act like they always do.. that is part of the fun. You go as yourself and get to see and hear everything. It’s fun to dress up for some but it’s not needed, 90% of the people who attend do not dress up. You just go and enjoy the experience Vivi: Yes , its always amazing to see the detail some people put into costumes. Though one thing plagues me. How do they make those turkey legs taste like ham? Any idea?
Drizzt: it’s the spices and the roasting process.. i can’t go into all the details cause then i would have to kill you .. trade secret and all that Vivi: ahhh I understand. I was this close to learning. So usually these faires take place during what we know as the Elizabethan Times. What do you think is the attraction to this time frame with the Renn Faires? Drizzt: Well the ones that do it in the time of Tudors would probably more accurate and I think that is mainly because that was some of the most notorious times. You ha King Henry VIII and all the scandles he brought to light. Then there was Mary, who made the streets run with blood during her purge, and then of couse Elizabeth, who reigned over one of the most prosperous times in medevial England. The style of the time is still popular today and there are many things that just appeal to folks.
Vivi: Excellent points. How do you think something like Medevial Times fares against the circuit of Renn Faires? Drizzt: oh Medievil Times is Great. they have more time to put into it. with rehersals and such. they can turn it into a very enjoyable experience. and because they are not traveling and working 10-12 hours straight then it’s a lot less stressful on the actors Vivi: I know alot of people greatly enjoy jousting at the renn faires. Tell us a little about jousting and how modern jousting would compare to the ways of old. Drizzt: ~chuckles~ well for one thing.. if you are speaking in a strictly historical sense... most knights were dirt poor. what armor they had was normally mixed and matched from what they could salvage off battle fields. they were very tough and determined people. only the very wealthy would have the bright shining armor you see at fairs, so you would have the modern area guys better armed and armored, but the originals would be a lot tougher and a lot more determined Vivi: Granted that yes. What we wanna know is... do they really whack each other with the lances or is spun sugar like in the Knights Tale movie? Drizzt: depends on the fair and the jousting company they hire. there are some it’s really pathetic. you have the “knights” slowing up and barely tapping each other .. then one flopps around like a fish and folls from his horse. and then there are other ones that i’ve seen where the guys are shattering lances and being throne from horses. those are the good ones. Vivi: Very Nice indeed. What lessons have you applied to your life that you learned from your experiences at Renn Faires?
Drizzt: ~chuckles~ shameless promoting. it’s kinda hard to be sublte when you are trying to attracked the attention of ppl 300 yards away.. acrross a field of people as 50 other people are screaming trying to get their attention. that and when i’m working.. i dont meet a stranger. no customer is a “customer” they are all friends. i learned to treat those that were paying me with respect. no matter what. working at the ren fair was my first real job. it set the tone for most of my work sense. Vivi: You are the king of shamless promoting and we can thank the Renn Faire for that. Is there anything else you would like to tell the readers about Renn Faires or why they should defintily go to one? Drizzt: they need to go to at least one. it’s something that you really dont get to see or experience normally. every state has a ren fair.. even if they are small and not very historically set up or just one weekend fairs that take place in a state park. the small ones wont of course have all the big shows and wont have all the food and such. so if you get a chance to go to a large one.. do it. and take plenty of free cash.. because youa re going to find 100’s of things to buy Vivi: Thank you so much for the information and the interview tonite. I learned quite a bit..not that I had to be convinced to go to one. ~laughs~ Drizzt: ~chuckles~ you are very welcome. i spent many many years working at fairs and love them. i would love to see more people spending time at them Vivi: You heard the man guys...go check out a Faire near you!

The Patron’s Guide to Renaissance Fairs by DRlZZT
Imagine having a time machine and going back to the court of King Henry VIII. This is not a science fantasy, but a trip to your local renaissance fair. The Renaissance Fair (or Ren Fair) is a wonderful place where you can find some of the best arts and crafts and clothing. Most made by hand. Swords and armor down to puzzles and games, jewelry and clothing, all to be found there As well as some of the best comedy acts you will see. There are so many sights and sounds around you that you will be over whelmed with the experience. Here are a few things to know about the Ren fairs before you go to one. Many times the first time Patron is overwhelmed with all the sights and sounds. The people hawking their wears and the way every one is speaking in that old English accent is sometimes confusing for most. You have to get use to the use of thee and thou that are being spoken. Just relax and let the fair envelope you. This is a place to let the environment take over. Do not be shy about trying everything. There are games that you will make a fool of yourself on but so does everyone else. Enjoy the food that is available. It’s expensive but it’s good and you won’t see some of it anywhere else. What ever you do, do not forget to tip. Every show passes a hat at the end of the performance. These people live and die by what they make on the weekends. This is their Job, their livelihood. Every dime they make goes into getting them from fair to fair and the fee’s involved with that. These people put a lot of time and energy into creating a wonderful place for you to visit, respect that and you will be well rewarded with a great time.

More than just a photo... The NOH8 Campaign is a charitable organization whose mission is to promote marriage, gender and human equality through education, advocacy, social media, and visual protest. On November 4, 2008 Proposition 8 passed in California, amending the state Constitution to ban same-sex marriage. The defeat provoked a groundswell of initiative within the GLBT community at a grassroots level, with many new political and protest organizations being formed in response. In 2009, a worldwide integration and development campaign was formed. The NOH8 Campaign was created as a result of the amendment of Proposition 8. NOH8’s main goal is to promote marriage, gender and human equality, regardless of the cultural group an individual associates him or herself to. Through education, advocacy, social media, visual protest, and the use of fame and celebrities, this campaign has raised awareness of marriage equality and anti-discrimination on a global level by incorporating almost 30 000 faces while continuing to grow. The NOH8 Campaign is a photographic silent protest created by celebrity photographer Adam Bouska and partner Jeff Parshley in direct response to the passage of Proposition 8. Photos feature subjects with duct tape over their mouths, symbolizing their voices being silenced by Prop 8 and similar legislation around the world, with “NOH8” painted on one cheek in protest. The phrase refers to “H8”, short for “Proposition H8” (pronounced “proposition hate”), a nickname used by critics of Proposition 8. The photos are featured on the campaign’s website, Facebook, Flickr, Twitter, MySpace, as well as a virtual world campaign in Second Life and IMVU. Nearly four years since its inception, the NOH8 Campaign has grown at an exponential rate with more than 33,000 photos taken at 120 open photo shoots in 43 US states. The campaign began with portraits of everyday Californians from all walks of life and soon rose to include politicians, military personnel, newlyweds, law enforcement, artists, celebrities, and many more.
While inspired by Prop 8, the scope of the NOH8 Campaign has developed to fight discrimination and bullying of all kinds. The message of ‘No Hate’ can be interpreted and applied broadly, and it speaks to each person in their own way. Cultural imperialism took on the form of an attitude and a silent protest, implementing a cultural hegemony that states that a given society should stand against the additional inequalities that the GLBT have to face in response to the amendment of Proposition 8.[4] The NOH8 Campaign encouraged the dominance of an equal society by altering the society’s culture in terms of perceptions, values, and beliefs when it comes to the GLBT community. Consequently, the meaning of this protest becomes a worldview accepted as a cultural norm and as universally valid. Everyone participating in the photograph and the protest identify him or herself with the hegemonic position and receive the dominant message delivered through this campaign. The NOH8 Campaign has received overwhelming support from around the world, and has appeared in various local and national news programs and publications.

The Way of the Shaman
Shamanism is a practice that involves a practitioner reaching altered states of consciousness in order to encounter and interact with the spirit world. A shaman is a person regarded as having access to, and influence in, the world of benevolent and malevolent spirits, who typically enters into a trance state during a ritual, and practices divination and healing. Shamanism is not a Belief System Shamanism is the about being connected with nature, understanding that we are earth-based, the real and living knowledge which is then used for balance, health, relationship as well as success in all that is that we do. By understanding the word “shamanism we would know that it is one of the oldest tribal healing traditions of indigenous people, which can be found in many different cultures worldwide. As well as many other methods, the one thing they have in common is communication and interaction with the spirit world. It is the oldest way in which human race has sought connection with Creation.
Shamanism is the path to knowledge which is gained through experience of many aspects of life, such as rituals, ceremonies, prayer and meditation, trials and tests. It is the practise, or discipline of interconnectedness and unlimited potential; which can create a total transformation of self. Healing is the most important function in shamanism along with prophecy as well as addressing the condition of the Soul for healing to occur in the first place. There are places all over the world where the spirit world merges with the physical world. These two worlds are in close contact with each other. Some of them are personal, some are secretive and some are very well known ‘power spots’. Stonehenge - England Skellig Islands - off the Irish Coast Serpent Mount - Southern Ohio The Black Hills - South Dakota Whether ancient or modern, human spirit, ordinary people, we are attracted to locations where we notice energy, greater power and spiritual force. And as we are all aware, we feel the longing, wanting to be back to experience them again and again, the physical sensations of transformative, energising presence of magical, invisible powers. These realms where eternity meets with the temporal world. The place where we know there to be more to the universe than we perceive with our physical senses. The late Mircea Eliade defined Shamanism itself, as a technique of ecstasy.

“Escape from Reality” DRlZZT sits down with long time roleplayer, Alissa Freewind, to get her thoughts and feelings on the roleplay world. DRlZZT: hello Alissa.. thank you for having me into your home. we are here today to discuss your views on the current state of affair in the general role playing community on IMVU AlissaFreewind: My pleasure and honor Drizzt. ~slides the tea over to you~ DRlZZT: let’s start off with a little back ground on You. how long have you been into role play and what got you into it originally? AlissaFreewind: Are we speaking in general or just here upon IMVU? DRlZZT: oo tea. thank you. ~makes a small cut and sips at it slowly between questions~ In general. AlissaFreewind: ~smiles~ Well I am what I call one of the original geek girls. I first got into gaming in 1973. I think what got me to that is the idea of trying to live out those sci fi and fantasy novels. I have always been a great fan of the Lord of the Rings. So when my younger brother talked about playing D and d with some friends and I scrolled through the paperback books, you know the original tan or white covers, my curiosity hit. DRlZZT: so you were one of those running around with the “Frodo Lives” buttons
AlissaFreewind: LOL Frodo and I can read this ring can you? yes I had them. DRlZZT: and sadly 99% of the people reading this have no idea about those buttons.. AlissaFreewind: Well I still have mine somewhere maybe scan or picture them and post them up. ~smiles~ DRlZZT: oh I have one.. I was little when LotR was a big hit. I have one of the rare fully illustrated “The Hobbit books. it was my bed time story AlissaFreewind: ~smiles~ Nice. We turned that into reading for my children later also the bedtime story. DRlZZT: yes.. that book was also read to my children. so you got into Role Playing because of your brother. what Kept you playing? AlissaFreewind: So through JR High and High school to the present I have played almost any imaginable game historical to RP and even did the Star trek on the school mainframe, only one of two girls taking computer science in my high school in the late 70s. Oh kept me playing, I love the thrill, the idea of being someplace else at some place in time. Or going what if this happened this way instead of the way it did. And as I got older that thrill is still there, but I add to it the ability for a few hours to forget about everything screwy going on in the world.
DRlZZT: so it’s your escape from reality. DRlZZT: and what was your the ability to take the story into your own introduction to the Role Play hands community here? AlissaFreewind: Mmmm would not say an escape from reality. I think reality is my escape from my fantasy. As much as I would like to stay away from the real world, and who does not, we have to return to it for the mundane fact of living. DRlZZT: ~nods~ so you look at more as an extension to Your reality? AlissaFreewind: yes. It is a distraction for my mind that runs far too much. Without it, I think I would become burned out and dull on my quite normal and everyday life. I have to keep my mind busy. So I work, have the hubby and home, the kids all grown, take online course, read, watch anime and RP. All to keep my over active mind busy.
AlissaFreewind: My introduction was coming on and asking about Role Playing. ~laughs and offers more tea~ Of course in the welcome room imvu had at the time that was the exact WRONG thing to ask. I got a hundred offers for BDSM, gorean, yiffing and the entire gamut of nurse and schoolgirl suggestions. DRlZZT: ~takes the tea~
AlissaFreewind: And the first group of RP I came across was strangely enough, vampires. Since you know I have this thing about undead. ~twirls the stakes and silver in her hands~ But what had me there for awhile was the leader DRlZZT: how did you first get into the was another lady from Scotland IMVU community and we got along famously. And then one day after she got AlissaFreewind: Hmmm first get into destroyed well off wandering IMVU.....To be quite honest it was not as through the woods I found a little if I was invited or told I stumbled across it pub with the bar tended by a gold in I think early or mid 2006. I fiddled with dragon. it and liked it but it got set aside for we sold our home and moved by mid 2007 DRlZZT: I’m guessing that didn’t all the kids were gone and we wanted to go to well get away from the fast encroaching urban environment. So then in 2007 I could AlissaFreewind: Oh no it went not remember my original Lissa account well, NO ONE was allowed to even words and imvu customer service has not dream of feeding off me. improved since I made the present one we all know today.
DRlZZT: ~chuckles~ was the Role play at that point on the client as a whole “good” or was it still finding its feet in your eyes? AlissaFreewind: it was still finding its feet at that time. Combat rules were the most contentious thing and I think it was still then mostly 3d fighting. Which required a lot of interpretation and witnesses. I mean we all weaved these wonderful stories and the fighting always fell short...almost anticlimactic and like a bad 8 bit video game.
the good little elf. Especially since my best friend was a gold dragon. I mean if I turned into a drow she may eat me, and getting killed back then was expensive, remember name changing every time? DRlZZT: I never actually followed that “rule” I always named my chara as a separate entity.. AlissaFreewind: ~smiles~ well I am still old school in that regard I guess. ~smirks and slides you some more tea and sips hers~ DRlZZT: I’m good on tea thank you dear. please go on with the tale
AlissaFreewind: Now I found the DRlZZT: yes I remember the 3d drow when I had had a big break up with my significant other at that time. rules.. sadly I just picked a fantasy themed room AlissaFreewind: ~smiles~ well and went there. And what did my eyes fall upon? A goddess dancing on you old too you know. However a table against a pole...dark velvety it was not there the seeds were skin...piercing violet eyes... ~shakes there in fact they were growing. her head~ needless to say I had found the drow. DRlZZT: ~chuckles~ when did you find the Drow and how was the DRlZZT: ~smirks~ that would mentality at the time definitly catch your eye AlissaFreewind: ~smiles~ Oh that is a story of course. I had always been such. This character is an extension of my RL paper D&D character. She is old going back to 1985. Yet I had not seen another drow on imvu so I was playing
AlissaFreewind: MMmmm she and I stayed together as friends then mates for years after that meeting. However I still had one problem even amongst my own kind. I think at the time I was like the only one who knew of the Dark Maiden, well openly of course.’ DRlZZT: you have been here a long time.. what changes have you seen in the RP community in general and how do you feel about the “open circuit” vs. the closed genre specific circuit? AlissaFreewind: I think it is changing and there are good and bad changes. From the good there are more and more who wish to RP. And the wide variety and expanse of possibilities makes the experience that much better. I think the rules for combat and interaction have gotten more defined and give people if not a set rule a guideline to work off of. Which is better than when we were feeling along in a new medium. As for the bad, well I see people who are trying to think of rp as an FPS, and sadly this cannot be. You cannot be an invincible bad ass in every room you stroll into. And the attitude that comes with that, crude boorish and arrogant turn a lot of people off. it is like modern... callousness. being an ass all the time does not work. As for the closed and open rp/cross over’s. I can enjoy both. Because sufficiently advanced technology will seem like magic makes for an interesting thing and cross over’s. DRlZZT: do you think this comes from people not reading and following .. shall we say racial traits of the characters they play and the mass mixing of racial types? AlissaFreewind: Ahh sadly yes. As you know I am drow. Drow were elves that got cursed after the wars. Now since I was around before the wars....technically I am an elf no? as for the mass mixing of racial types.... it is all a bid for power they would not otherwise have it seems at times. For others it is just a way of being able to fit into many genres. DRlZZT: ~nods~ you are probably one of 4 people I consider a “peer” when it comes to Drow history and such
AlissaFreewind: ~blushes~ Why thank you. There are not many of us to be sure. Now for the closed and crossing genres. Correct? DRlZZT: yes. there are a lot of those who want to cross genres such as Gor and Drow, star trek with star wars, ect AlissaFreewind: There is a old sci-fi rule that any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. So I am not against crossing over genres, in fact rifts is quite fun and as I said in my reference coming back it can be handy. However before let’s say groups cross that line they should have some guidelines and rules in place. We both remember the gor and drow conflict caused by one or two gorean men trying to force collar drow women. DRlZZT: oh yes.. AlissaFreewind: And there is nothing really in gorean or d and d that restricts this as time travel and portals both play parts in the stories. I will work on the gorean drow idea here. Say two groups wished to do that. feasible yes. even doable. I mean breaking a drow woman especially a noble woman would be a great prize for a gorean. Also for male drow of lolthian persuasion it would be a way out of their servitude. On the flip side, for the drow, it would be another place to garner slaves and riches and power. So something would have to be worked out for the interaction and how to fix disputes. yet it is doable. As is going to phase world or other worlds. spells and even the old spell jammers in d and d can do that. Whereas the technology end opening a rift or portal or a failed experiment can create opportunities. yes it could and could give much new meaning and fun to both rp’s. and I can also understand and deal with a closed setting. Some in the group may not wish to do so or do not like another genre. So the closed group is an option.
DRlZZT: ~nods~ so in your opinion, as long as a set of agreements were worked out before hand {and provided the people involved in it actually knew what they were doing} any crossover could be worked out and on another touchy subject.. what about those who choose to play as “gods” AlissaFreewind: Now as for “gods” godmodding etc.
DRlZZT: so to kill you set in a special lock so you can’t teleport out of the area either physically nor mentally.. and such ~ponders & chuckles~ AlissaFreewind: perhaps or a special weapon which there is one and is in the possession of someone I trust implicitly since I too have been prone to fits of madness after so long
DRlZZT: yes.. those who claim they are .. say Lolth, or another well known god DRlZZT: well you know.. old or goddess age does bring on insanity.. AlissaFreewind: Playing a god is well stupid imho. DRlZZT: ~chuckles~ AlissaFreewind: it is a method to wrap the player in a safe cloak of invulnerability that is not normally present in sci-fi or fantasy settings. I will use myself for an example and this will give some of my history. I am old I came to Faerûn when the elves first did. I am so old I have amassed power and abilities to make myself seem almost godlike. yet that comes from experience and playing. Do I seem invulnerable? Yes, because I am one who has my contingencies set for when I die. You can kill me but unless you take care of my plans for death you will have an angry Dancer looking for you. yet I can die permanently and there are several methods yet they still have to deal with contingencies.
AlissaFreewind: of course. And since I have had several curse removed of late, more things can affect me now, so yes my death is quite possible and easily done if someone does their research. Know thy enemy and know thyself and you will win every time. Sun Tzu DRlZZT: do you see anywhere that the general population could improve on the Role play in general.. or any advice to those coming into the scene. AlissaFreewind: How to improve upon it....well I say this, I have many who wish to learn rp and learn about drow. I say that the community should be more welcoming, more open to some who want to come and watch and learn.
AlissaFreewind: let them watch let them ask questions. Pool our resources and go hey this group does drow you got rp basics down now let’s ask them if they can teach you about drow or this one does dragons Do not be afraid to use what we have and make it work for everyone. I think that is it really mentor the new people. DRlZZT: where would you suggest for people who are new to go to get the introduction to the Role Play? AlissaFreewind: Introduction? I really do not see any place that does a general rp course so to speak. I see fantasy I see medieval I see rifts and gor and each has like a gloss over of how to rp, from the quick talk to the lengthy detailed typing. But always set to their standard. I think we need more a place to point to we all can go, this is the basics to know. then go to your desired group for advanced specific learning. DRlZZT: what would You personally like to see come along with the Role play in the future? AlissaFreewind: ~smiles~ Well being what I am I would like to eventually see all drow leave the Spider goddess, but I am realistic, not going to happen. ~laughs~ RP wise though I think a more standardized way of crossovers and better cooperation between the various rp’s. And that the attitudes will change from confrontational to one a bit more
amiable to all. Though I still have some problems but that is more of an imvu thing to fix, which they are slow to fix if ever and always go the wrong way. DRlZZT: would you be supportive of an RP council? there are a couple that have claimed to have the backing of IMVU.. even though they do not, who have been trying to do a council. would you be supportive of one if they were honest old school RP’s who could respect the different variations and different styles AlissaFreewind: Of course I would be in favor of such. And claiming to have the backing of IMVU is good but it would have to be straight up confirmed by a representative many of us know. DRlZZT: well IMVU has stated several times their policy of RP here. in essence it’s a “chat client” and they will not make any “rules” nor enforce any rules of role play unless they violate TOS AlissaFreewind: Well ye sit is a chat client, yet that client performs quite well for rp. if they backed an initiative such as that and the group came up with rules, it would be a subset or add on to the TOS for problems involving RP. And seriously this
also leads into the AP arguments. Since most RP tends to deal with adult situations, death, fighting etc technically we all violate tos by doing rp. Even though we are AP. yet since AP is not as it used to be and kids seem to get it, people tend to stay in the little cliques where they know who is who and is the age they say. Which brings us back to welcoming people who want to learn. DRlZZT: ~chuckles~ most RP’s I’ve noticed strongly encourage people to get AP and their Age verified.
AlissaFreewind: I mean seriously, look at drow children no love lost nor given in the Underdark. Aye D I agree and it does say so in the TOS. Yet the example I gave is it a child or is it the 300 year old vampire? See the fuzzy area. DRlZZT: right.. AlissaFreewind: That is where RP and RL cross and sometimes not to the better for either. DRlZZT: ~Nods~
AlissaFreewind: Agreed and it should be a requirement period for RP ANY rp
AlissaFreewind: So in general I think a child should not be allowed.
DRlZZT: well what are your views on the “child” chara’s
DRlZZT: I would like to thank you for taking the time to sit and talk with me today
AlissaFreewind: well....as you probably know I have more than one thought one that as I try to see many perspectives. Personally, to me it is creepy. I mean sure say the child was turned into a vampire. Nice all well and good and can be fun. But then to say see that child also doing cyber seems to cross a moral and legal line in my mind somewhere. So I think if done in a proper context, within TOS and rp guidelines fine. DRlZZT: well it does cross a legal line.. there are provisions in tos about portraying a child or minor in a sexually explicit way

Hey, Hey! Welcome back...so you been stompin around the Fair and worked up an appetite? Have I got the meal for you! Pull up a stool and let me show you how the Italians feast! The main course of our meal is Porchetta. Now you are probably asking what in the world is that? Fageddabout it! It’s simply a pork roast, and here’s a little recipe my grandma passed down...Once you taste it, you’ll love it!
Preparation: 1.Preheat the oven to 350°F. Porchetta is a wonderful Italian invention of a rolled roasted ham with herbs and spices and tons of flavor! Porchetta is incredible sliced up and served as sandwiches (a common street food in Italy) or served as a main course at dinner with a side of bitter greens such as arugula or dandelion greens. Prep Time: 30 minutes Cook Time: 1 hour, 30 minutes Total Time: 2 hours Yield: Serves 12 to 15 Ingredients: •8 ounces pancetta, finely chopped •10 garlic cloves, minced •Grated zest of 3 lemons •Grated zest of 1 orange •1/2 cup chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley •Leaves from 4 sprigs fresh rosemary, chopped •2 tablespoons red pepper flakes •2 tablespoons rinsed capers, chopped •Kosher salt •1 (10- to 12-pound) skin-on boneless fresh ham, butterflied
2. Put the pancetta in the bowl of a food processor and pulse until it forms a paste. Transfer to a bowl and mix in by hand the garlic, citrus zests, parsley, rosemary, red pepper flakes, and capers and 2 tablespoons salt until thoroughly blended. 3. Put the ham flesh-side-up on a cutting board and score the meat with the tip of a sharp knife every inch or so in a cross-hatch pattern. Rub the pancetta paste into the meat, making sure to get it into the score marks. Flip the ham over and cross the skin with the knife as you did the flesh. Roll the ham up skin-sideout, and secure with kitchen twine. Season the skin lightly with salt. 4.Put the pork in a roasting pan and transfer to the oven to roast for 2 hours. 5.Increase the oven temperature to 400°F and roast until the pork reaches an internal temperature of 170°F and the skin is nice and crisp, about 1½ hours. 6. Remove from the oven and let rest for 30 minutes. Thinly slice the Porchetta before serving. Don’t worry if there are leftovers, as porchetta makes awesome sandwiches!
