Geo-histories of our places and people: Montalvão It rises, but slightly, in a hill full of whitewashed houses. Its Medieval castle, rebuilt and dismantled several times, defends, though not much, the plains of the High Alentejo that here is penetrated by the Tagus river. From this combination of present, but not prevailing elements, was made Montalvão. It is a border land, wide, and flat until it falls in the Tagus and in Sever valleys, which confine it by north and east, respectively. The soils are poor, rocky and scorched, made of shales from Beiras. Remnants of fertile soil appear in the higher grounds, more than 320m high, where the pre-Tagus was once: it's the Feia, the Remédios or Montalvão hills. The region most sought sanctuary, Our Lady of Remedies, still rises here isolated from everything in a fertile soil, red by the conglomerates with argillaceous matrix. Isolated? There's no isolation in a land of shepherds, but the blue and the white facade are as a mark of joy in a melancholic landscape. In the beginning of September, the isolated chapel fills up with people who speak the two languages or speak their own language that the Alentejo and Castilian Chant are mixed so many times here. It's a border land, between Alentejo, Beira and Extremadura with its origins in this side of the border. The Tagus and the Sever are an oasis of Nature. In mid Rede Natura Site S. Mamede, the riverside areas became lush, in particular in Sever, which are a fundamental support in food and protection for the diversity of birdlife. In this river waters survive two rarities, the “Saramugo” (Anaecypris hispanica), the little warrior is critically in danger of extinction, and the Thick shelled river mussel (Unio crassus), a good pointer for this water quality. Deep down in the Tagus, rocks curl themselves, which were in past times pages of a symbolic writing, the most ancient in these parts. The Cachão de S. Simão and the Cachão do Algarve rapids are major chapters of a daily life epopee, materialized in dozens of figures hardly interpreted, others are anthropomorphic or zoomorphic, inspired in the fauna from then. Montalvão is made of two lands with timeless rusticity, that can be found in a wide area of 123,87km2: Salavessa, land of work where the Alentejo architecture is repeated in the typical chimneys, which seem that can topple of the houses, so big they are; and Montalvão, with stony streets and gothic portals, with numerous historical details of an important past. The may well be the truest Alentejo villages of Portugal! Salavessa smells of field work, has its origin carved with sickle in the valleys. Monuments to this way of life can be found in the magnificent hydraulic complex of Ribeira do Fivenro and in the legendary Fisga do Tejo, opened by hand though not known when, but possibly contemporary of this stream devices. Montalvão is dominated by its castle and mother church, monuments of public interest with medieval origin. If an excuse is needed to walk the streets of this land during the scorching summer afternoons, the Manueline style pillory, the Mercy church, the S. Peter and Holy Spirit chapels are a reason for look upon.

With a population of 442 inhabitants Montalvão still lives of the agriculture and forest. The rural tourism has a great potential yet to be discover due to the communication difficulties with Spain, which the Dam of Cedilho is entrusted to solve, but only during several hours in the weekend. Around the villages of Salavessa and Montalvão orbit three hiking trails that take the visitor to unknown places with great beauty. These trails have potential to unveil a territory rich in geodiversity, biodiversity, usages, habits and traditions. An already announced rock art interpretation center could serve as a starting point for the discovery of a landscape history. A much appreciated smuggling trail connects annually these lands to its neighbour, at times apart, Cedillo. These are family lands, since that the other side of Sever was founded in the 18th century by folks from here. With a popular architecture with incomparable character and beauty, Montalvão and Salavessa await for a more global disclosure of their heritage, so they can be discovered as bastions of a pure Alentejo.
