The defensive players, however must stay in their designated area which is the defensive zone, while the offensive players from the opposite team come into their territory. The only players who are allowed to run across the entire field without restriction are the midfielders. Official games will be played during the spring season, along with the track, swim, softball, and boys volleyball season. If there are any questions regarding the sport it is suggested that Posner be contacted. There are 13 schools in the Los Angeles City section with

Lacrosse as a sport, including Beverly Hills and Palisades High School, which are not part of Hollywood’s division in any sports. The official staff of the new team remains unknown, but this should not discourage anyone from joining the new team and form part of school history.

Just two days after the United States chose Donald Trump as its president, students all across the district of LAUSD decided to protest by staging walk-out to showcase their displeasure with the results of the election. Many of the students from schools in areas surrounding Hollywood, including Bernstein and Marshall, joined the tumult and marched to Hollywood High, urging students to participate in the walkouts. The plan apparently was to gather students at Hollywood to then head off to Fairfax and continue the peaceful demonstration there. Despite being obstructed by the school’s faculty, a small band of students (25) managed to walk off the premises and join the protests, though they

were accompanied by Essick Allen and Kristine Tserunyan, two of the administrators. A wide array of students who did not participate in the walkouts had varied views on whether or not they were necessary and thought-provoking. “I understand why they’re doing it, but it’s not really promoting change,” Leah Jackson, an SAS junior said. “It’s promoting anger and frustration and drawing attention to it, which isn’t terrible, but there has to be organization.” Views varied from favoring the walkouts to viewing them with a sense of neutrality and even opposition to them. “It’s a good start, really. We’re kids, we don’t have much political power until we put our heads together, ya know? We do have to do something,

though, and this is definitely a way to start,” said Grace Lyde, an SAS sophomore. The next day, Principal Alejandra Sanchez encouraged teachers to “create a space for students to talk about what has happened as an outlet for them to release their emotions, fears, or thoughts.” As a follow-up to the walkouts, on Wednesday, Nov. 16, the LGBT club and Leadership banded together and resolved to host a sit-in as a means of allowing students to express their thoughts regarding the election, ensuring there was a way besides leaving school to enunciate their feelings. “We want students to feel comfortable talking about their fears, we want to give help and get closer to the students so that they can deal with those fears,” Sanchez said. The sit-in was marked by a multitude of students who were brave enough to stand before their peers and convey their thoughts, including a poem from the beloved poet Langston Hughes and an original rap by Tai Jones, alongside many other students who projected their reassurances to those who might have feared the election’s conclusion.

Once again, the Performing Arts Magnet program succeeded in putting on a fantastic and enjoyable performance. Thursday, Dec. 1, was opening night for Peter and the Starcatcher. The performance and the vibe given off by the cast members was intoxicatingly enjoyable, according to audience members. The plot of the play is fun and is easy to follow. The play has its funny moments along side some sentimental ones. The cast, which fulfilled both funny and sentimental mo-

ments included: Royer Perez as Peter, Chynna Tumalad as Molly and Anton BharmaniBurman as Black Stache, and that’s just to name a few of the fantastic cast members. Peter and the Starcatcher is the prequel to the Peter Pan story that we are all too familiar with. It shows the adventure that Peter, a poor little orphan boy from England, and his friends embark on to keep their treasure safe from mean ol’ Captain Hook and eventually shows how they reach Neverland. It shows how Peter is given his name and how he

became the forever young boy we all know and love. The cast did an amazing job with their performance and transforming their audience to a place far more magical than the Hollywood High School auditorium. From the way the actors spoke their lines to the lighting on the backdrop, the performance that was given was just as magical as the story line.

College Fair set for Jan. 28 Those who are planning on going to college or thinking of a career are in luck because the College/Career fair is coming on Jan. 28, 2017. The College/Career fair is a workshop in which many colleges will be coming onto the campus quad to inform students about graduation requirements, funding for college and the college application workshop to show students how to apply. The fair will be available for students in 9th-11th grade, however, middle school students are welcome as well and gain some knowledge as well. It will take place on a Saturday from 1 to 3 p.m. Don’t miss out on this chance to get informed about careers and colleges.

JROTC is preparing to go head to head against other schools for competition. As the December competition approaches, the staff and cadets continue to practice and thoroughly prepare for the event. They have established a rigorous practice plan to guarantee that everyone is practicing everything they need to know. Mondays and Wednesdays are set out for company, squad and platoon practice and Tuesdays and Thursdays are for unarmed and armed practice. Practice starts right after school until 4:30 p.m.. Some days, the cadets and officers are required to come before school at 7a.m. Not many people know the way that JROTC works and is divided into. Squad is a group of eight of the best people in the program who do a series of 58 commands led by Mika Bonus. Company has two

platoons of five by four groups led by the company commanders Jose Florez and Harris Kim. Armed and unarmed are a group of people who exhibit a drill that may consist of intricate precision marching, along with various hand movements as seen at the Pep Rally. Platoon is a smaller version of Company. Benedict Jhu, the Battalion Commander leads both platoons. Color guard carries the National Color and other flags appropriate to its position in the chain of command just like at football games and assemblies. JROTC’s S4 Anayeli Perez said, “Waiting for competition is nerve-wracking. We’re ready and can’t wait to compete. We’re all confident in everything we are competing for.” At last year’s competition, the program ranked top five in several events causing every-

one to be proud of their work. Harris Kim, the executive officer, said, “Color guard got fifth place last year which was really good because they made a major mistake but still made top five.” The stakes are high with around 40 different schools participating from all over the district. The events they will be competing in are: squad, company, platoon, unarmed and armed, and color guard.

Voters pass bilingual ed, tobacco tax, plastic bag ban

Voters weighed in on California’s 17 propositions on Nov. 9, approving 12 of them, including the legalization of marijuana, increased gun control and higher taxes on tobacco. The propositions that were passed included: 51 (school bonds), 52 (funding Medical), 54 (posting proposed legislation online), 55 (tax on the richest 1.5% of people), 56 (tobacco tax), 57 (parole eligibility), 58 (bilingual education), 59 (advisory measure on money in politics), 63 (background checks for ammunition), 64 (marijuana legalization), 66 (speed up executions) and 67 (ban on plastic bags). Proposition 64, which legalized recreational use of marijuana, now allows Californians

of age 21 and older to possess, transport, buy and use an ounce of marijuana. This also allows the possession of up to six plants by an individual. Only licensed people will be allowed to sell non-medical marijuana beginning Jan. 1, 2018. However, unlike the approval of the proposition, there are still many oppositions to the legalization of selling marijuana regarding on concerns of public health and safety issues (see side bar). Another major issue, Proposition 63, makes stricter requirements for the purchase or sale of ammunition- individuals and businesses both are required to obtain a one-year license from the California Department of Justice. The people who buy ammunition are to go through

a background check from both the sellers and the Department of Justice. Anyone who fails to place in a report of lost or stolen guns will be faced with criminal charges as well the proposition allowing the processing of taking guns away from people upon their conviction or for their felony. Voters also voted to raise the state’s tobacco taxes to $2 a pack. According to the nonpartisan Legislative Analyst’s Office, an estimated $1.3 billion could be raised a year by Prop 56. This can help fund the state’s Medi-Cal health care program for low-income residents. This has been one of the most expensive campaigns, the opposing side raising up to $71.2 million to have the regular tax prices remain.

Pros and cons of Prop 64 STEPHANIE STARK

On Election Day, Prop 64 was passed with a 56.14% majority and many Californians rejoiced. Prop 64 legalized the recreational use and the personal production of marijuana for people 21 and older that also owned a permit. It takes effect on Jan. 1, 2018. Here are pros and cons to the much anticipated law: Pros: -This can free up space in cells and make room for people with more serious crimes to be imprisoned. -Marijuana, which has fewer health risks than tobacco, and

overall does more good than harm and (according to Robert Melamede, a noted cannabis researcher), can be an “anti-cancer” plant and show ”a protective effect against pro-carcinogens. Cons: -Because of the law, the prices per gram have risen considerably. This can pave the way for cities and counties to tax the plant, too, making it way more expensive than it was before. -Unlike cigarettes, it cannot be smoked publicly. If an adult lives within 1,000 feet of a school, they cant smoke marijuana.

The theme for Winter Formal is Snowball. To keep the winter theme going, it’ll be a greatly decorated place to be. Instead of going with the popular winter wonderland theme, Snowball was the way to go. Every year Hollywood High School hosts Winter Formal and preparations for this event have already begun. The gym will be transformed into a land of snow where students will be able to hang out with their friends and have a good time. The event will be held Jan. 28 of next year and leadership is going to do their best

Some input will be needed from the students. Every dance needs music, which means that the playlist for winter formal will need to suit the students’ taste. Coming back from winter break, leadership will have different DJs in the quad to choose which one will play at winter formal. Winter Formal can’t be special without a theme to re-

Vine star Cameron Dallas left the app to pursue a series on Netflix. By July of 2016 half of Vine’s top 9,725 accounts stopped posting or deleted their account. The money for Vine also rapidly declined with marketers who stopped

Vine users posted on other social media apps their support for vine and how unique it was. People have also tried to get Twitter to sell Vine but some attempts to do this were unsuccessful. OPINION/EDITORIAL

STAFF EDITORIAL:

Year of flops to 2017, year of hope

Let’s face it. 2016 has not been the year we hoped for with all the conflict and random tragedies. It started out with the continuation of the Black Lives Matter movement and the unexpected celebrity deaths, like David Bowie and Alan Rickman. The election results were unexpected with 15,000 votes going to Harambe and president elect, Donald Trump, purportedly having a rape baby on the way. 2016 is not a year one wants to remember, but the bright side is that once you have hit rock bottom, the only way to go is up. 2017 is going to be the year of hope and optimism. There is more to focus on and

there’s nothing left to stop us. Rather than sulking on the fact that we will be going into a year without Brangelina, we should focus on the fact that marijuana is legal (for 21 and over), and that pandas are no longer an endangered species!

worth the wait. And then next thing one knows, graduation is right around the corner and all one has worked for has paid off. Yes, 2016 was a year of major decisions, but now we get to sit back and witness the consequences. But don’t forget, with every tragedy comes memes.

There’s so much to look forward to with a new year. The “new year new me” cliche may be mainstream, but why not try it out? It’s time to get loose after such an uptight year, let go of Arthur’s grip and

move forward. Cutting off five inches of your hair may be one of the many ways to get the ball rolling, or perhaps finally getting that diet going. And good news to all the seniors, you have so much to look forward to. 2016 is where all the stress is, but next semester in 2017 awaits all the fun with all the senior activities taking place like Senior Breakfast and Prom. Although waiting to hear from colleges is tedious, getting that acceptance letter is

Many students from John Marshall High School and Helen Bernstein High School walked out of their classes and headed to the streets to advocate their rights against the president elect. Along the way, they stopped by Hollywood High and chanted to the staff to let the students out. Although there were several students that joined the protesters, there were some that were

Imagine if no one protested against segregation, but said, “Hey, give me rights please, if you want,” nothing would get done. Imagine if women did not protest for their rights, they would still be second hand beings (they still kind of are) and would still have to comply to the standards of the perfect housewife in the 50s.

ing out of school to protest and putting your education at risk is not commendable. For example: in the most recent protests, many people are opposing the election results and are trying to fight off the president elect. So as a result, students are walking out of their schools to protest against him. But as a consequence, they are missing out on their education and are basically proving to Trump that those protesting are uneducated, although, some sacrifices have to be done for the sake of making things right. So protest if you like but if you are opposed to it, cool, do not protest. But you also do not have the right to tell people that it is “worthless” and “extreme” to protest for what they believe in.

The new year new me cliche may be mainstream, but why not try it out.

Walkouts have been a part of protests since the civil rights movement. Children in the 50s in Birmingham, Alabama walked out of school because Martin Luther King Jr. was conducting a protest for their civil rights. When no adult stepped up to protest, children did what everybody, including their parents wouldn’t do. Those brave children were the foundation of the civil rights movement. So why are there people saying that these current walkouts are not effective or are worthless? After the result of the current election, many people

Proposition 64 has been passed with 55% of the voters saying yes and 44% saying no. Marijuana is legal- now what? It is now legal, but it does not mean anyone can smoke it whenever or wherever they want. Users have to be of 21 years or older in order to

Medicinal and recreational marijuana are now both legal. Medicinal marijuana users can buy it at medical marijuana shops. Happy to say goodbye to a disappointing 2016

Gabriella Martinez COPY EDITOR

This year wasn’t the best year, a devastation, perhaps, according to many who have been disappointed with the outcome now that 2016 is coming to a close. Countless instances this year have amounted to be less than savory, and many of them have ravaged us as Americans, as human beings connected with the world at our fingertips.

We’ve lost many we held dear, have watched other countries grapple with violent insurrections as opposed to peaceful opposition, have felt fear of terrorism loom at the back of our minds. This country showed us that racism, sexism and homophobia remain an increasingly prevalent part of our culture with the election of Donald Trump. Many are suffering in this world in remote areas we are rarely taught about in schools and we stand idly by and do nothing, can do nothing, about it. Problems in our country remain: a lack of knowledge of the cultures and ethnicities that surround us, problems that plague the education system and a culture that regards even the worst sexual assault as locker room talk. But even in times of dark-

ness, it helps to look at the light, consider the good. Movies this year offered a new vision regarding our flawed systems. Zootopia broached and tackled the issue of racism and presented the idea that even the smallest and feeblest prey or largest and fiercest predator deserve to be treated equally and given the same opportunities. Moana has given us another heroine that is tied into an equally diverse culture such as a our own, has given us insight into a world beyond the one we have become so used to seeing. Finding Dory showed us that having a disability doesn’t make us different, and instead inspired us to realize that anyone, anywhere, can do anything they set their minds to. Pokemon Go, the app that caused such a tumultuous out-

burst among youth and adults both, showed the world that good could be accomplished even through a game on one’s phone when players placed lures near hospitals for sick children. Tiger numbers are growing. So are manatees, and pandas. Child mortality throughout the world has decreased and continues to decrease. 800,000 volunteers in India have managed to plant over 50 million trees in just 24 hours. The ozone layer is repairing itself due to the fact that we have managed to lessen the use of aerosol chemicals. Strides have been made in securing cures for radiation sickness, precision treatments for cancer have been implemented and are working and strides have been made in Alzheimer’s prevention.

Leonardo DiCaprio won an Oscar! People have survived cancer, overcome depression, families have grown and people continue to strive to do good in a world that isn’t as bad as you may think. Any kind of victory is such, even if it’s the smallest achievement. This may have been a horrible year. Problems remain but many are doing their best to amend them, and the world keeps growing and maturing a bit at a time. This year was not the best but that suggests that we should work harder than ever before to improve it and ensure change to secure a better world. Tai Jones, a senior at Hollywood High School (PAM), is sky rocketing in the music industry as a young female rapper. Now Tai can sing, rap and dance, she can do just about everything, but the real question is how she was introduced to the music industry, whether her mind revolved around music or if it was just a hobby that became something to focus on. “I’m not going to lie, it started off as a hobby and wasn’t serious until two years after I began, when I started to realize I am not only good and talented, but my music is inspiring others around my age and my music was creating its own lane in the Rap Game,” said Jones. It’s obvious that hobby

worked out for the best for Jones. “I used to attend the Boys & Girls Club of Venice and a friend took me into the studio. A band was just working and thought it would be dope to have a rapper so I came ready the next day and the rest was history.” Isn’t she just amazing? She has music to handle, AP classes to study for and also new routines for the Hollywood Dance Guard because she is the captain of the group. Being a student itself is difficult but she tackles the challenges that come her way every day and still stays on top of everything. Three words to explain her style of music would be, “Original, Empowering and Hip Hop.” She wants her music

to take her far enough to the point where it opens doors for different opportunities such as acting, hosting radio

television, modeling, writing/ directing and possibly owning her own television show brand. She’s very determined to become the best individual

that she can be, one may start to wonder if she is satisfied, whether or not she believes she has accomplished enough. “Honestly, you can never accomplish enough. Yes, I accomplished a lot but not enough, I still could’ve done way more.” Her music represents her personality as a person. She has show coming January 7th at Kennedy Duran Slay’s 16th birthday party, so it would be best for everyone to keep an eye out. The biggest question remains whether or not she will remain true to her family and friends that remained by her side and supported her the entire way after she reaches her ultimate high. “I pray that I do because my main friends are very sup-

portive and always have been. As long as they remain true to themselves they will always remain true to me.” Tai Jones is an upcoming artist with a heart of gold and the determination of no other. with new and creative ways to sell them. The designs on ugly sweaters vary from popular Hollywood blockbusters to cheesy puns. Some sweaters even include lights or jingle bells on them. One of the best things about these sweaters is that they’re unisex, so you don’t have to worry about whether you’re buying a guy’s or girl’s sweater. Despite this,

most of the time, these sweaters don’t come cheap, ranging from $30-$50. Thanks to stores like H&M, Forever 21, Kohl’s and Target, finding them no longer means digging through a thrift shop trying to find the perfect sweater for an affordable price.

Trends that shook 2016: Pokemon Go, mannequin challenge KATHERINE QUEZADA CHRONICLE REPORTER

In the digital world, new trends go viral everyday, including fashion trends, aesthetic feeds and new apps. Every year there are new trends and challenges: 2013 had the Harlem Shake, 2014 Alex from Target and 2015 had the Don’t Judge Me Challenge. As the year wraps up, here are the biggest trends to date of 2016. Acapella: an app that allowed people to record videos of them singing and creating multi-part harmonies was an easy way to become musically creative, and a funny way of making parodies of the greatest hits to date. Damn Daniel: a regular teenage guy messing around with his friends and being recorded on snapchat

went viral after his friend continued saying “Damn Daniel” when he was wearing a good outfit. This was a trend that other people started making parodies of and had Daniel and his friend were taken to the Ellen show, where they gave the pair a lifetime supplies of Vans Off the Wall. Flipping bottle: people of all ages started flipping half empty bottles, attempting to get them to stand upright. Pokemon Go: The game of the year that had people spending time outdoors searching for imaginary Pokemon, which were located in a wide range of areas. People became

obsessed with the idea of “catching them all,” causing an uproar that affected millions of people. So Gone challenge: This challenge dared people to freestyle their own verse of rap over the instrumental version of Monica’s 2003 hit “So

Gone.” Rapping about love or anything in particular had tons of rappers giving it a try for fun. 100 Layers challenge: 100 layers of lipstick, shirts, mascara and even tape, alongside other things, was a weird trending challenge that started off as only makeup layered onto people’s faces but was then extended into other things as well. Juju on that beat: A dance craze with easy and fun choreographical moves that were paired to the song

titled the same by Zayion McCall and Zay Hilfiger. Mannequin challenge: IT involved staying still throughout almost a whole song while being recorded in “mid action” was pretty cool and made many people try it out themselves. Andy’s Coming: If you’ve ever watched Toy Story you’d know that when Andy was on his way to his room every toy would go back to their places or drop and lie still in the spot they were in. This inspired a trend to act normal while playing a song until a person in the background yelled out “Andy’s Coming” and everyone dropped dead on the spot.
