The group had also taken to exploring creative techniques of learning the necessary information to proceed toward the competitions. “Last year, we learned mainly through reading material, but this year we’ve integrated different methods,” Youn said. The main concern last year revolved around the group failing to be driven, to desire involving themselves in the material provided to them. As opposed to last year, students this year integrated distinctive methods of grasping
the necessary information, and took into account the different styles of learning in order to fully engage all of the students. “I loved the feeling of representing my school those days, even though the only competition I’ve ever participated in before was the Spelling Bee,” said Melissa Stoute, an SAS senior. Many students also agreed that they enjoyed the experience of being in AcaDeca, which was welcoming environment.

Lorena Robelo, known for founding Debate Club and Latino Student Union on campus, is now also known for being a POSSE Scholar. POSSE will be paying Lorena’s full four year tuition at Hobart and William Smith Colleges in New York State. “I feel blessed because if it wasn’t for this scholarship I wouldn’t of had the opportunity to go to a private college,” said Robelo. Hobart and William Smith’s annual tuition is $52, 000. Robelo was nominated by her older brother, William Robelo, who was also granted the POSSE Scholarship in 2006 to attend Claremont McKenna College, a private school about an hour east of Los Angeles. Lorena had to go through three rounds to win the scholarship. In the first round, she was competing with 100 other students in the room. Games were played so the judges could see how the potential scholarship winners interacted with others and whether or not they showed leadership skills. The second round was an interview with the three judges so that they could get to know the students personally. The

The Black Student Union assembly will be taking place on Feb. 24 before the end of Black History Month. “We’ve been planning it since last semester,” said Black Student Union vice president Daisha Campbell, ”We want to establish black unity and black pride as well as incorporate different races to see the struggles and successes of black people.” The assembly is meant to teach the students about the history of black people. The
students want to share the stories of slavery and segregation that molded the black community. This is the second year that the club will put together and produce this presentation. Like last year, it is expected for many students to learn from the assembly and the students who create it. “I am proud of our school for allowing African Americans to share our history with the entire school,” said BSU member Cameron Haywood,
“The whole school will be there and we will learn about all that black people have done for America. I am glad that I have a chance to participate in the assembly.” This year will differ from last year in the sense that the assembly will be held during school for the entire school to see rather than after school. This has been done to give everyone the opportunity to witness the hard work of the club.
School report card shows split between students and staff JASMINE CORTEZ

The annual School Report Card, which tracks the school’s progress towards its goals, showed better than district average in graduation rates and passing classes, but students gave lower scores to school safety than parents or faculty did. The student body attended an assembly last month to bring attention to the statistics being reported through an LAUSD School Report Card. Every year, students take an online survey that includes questions relating to personal views of their time at Hollywood High School and academic statistics ranging from graduate percentage to attendance rates. The report card was handed out in little pamphlets, having the information separated into five goals: “100% Graduation,” “Proficiency For All,” “100% Attendance,” “Parent, Student,
and Community Engagement,” and “School Safety.” In the graduation category, Hollywood High had an 88% graduation rate, slightly lower than last year’s 89% and higher than the district average of 75%. In the category proficiency for all, HHS had a 55% passing A-G courses with a C or higher, as compared to last year’s 60% and the district average of 48%. A few examples from the report card were very low in standards. One question asked if teachers treated students fairly and only 48% agreed, not even reaching half of the student body. And when it comes to being involved, only 50% answered that they did feel like they are a part of the school. Only 69% of the student body is clear on how to behave on campus while the rest as unclear on
how to act on school property. It means that students behave in ways that breaks school rules because they aren not given a proper presentation of how to act in a way that they can understand. While 95% of staff and 92% of parents thought the school was safe, only 61% of students did. On the bright side, 75% of students plan on going to a four year college degree or higher, which is more than half the student body and it provides hope that the regular graduation rate of 88% will increase in upcoming years. So much could be told from the report card that can help the staff find ways to improve the standpoint of Hollywood High to continue raising the percentages for next year’s school report card.

Berumen, who teachers said was a very private person with his personal life did not want to comment on his situation of leaving the school, but students and staff said they wish him the best in this new chapter of his life. R.M. Briggs, the PAM lead teacher, hosted a small get together in celebration of Berumen’s new chapter in life during lunch a day before his departure. “He was a modest person, and I wanted to honor the service that he had provided throughout the years working in this school,” said Briggs. Leaving early in the second semester without any notice had students asking questions
if they were going to have a permanent teacher soon or continue the semester with different substitutes. Luckily, Barishman, who was working at a middle school earlier this year, was asked to transfer and take Berumen’s spot. He will now be teaching for the rest of the school year. Barishman is from South Africa and has been working for LAUSD since 2007. He has taught high school students before and is very familiar with the content students need to know to reach the standards of the curriculum. “Mr. Barishman definitely teaches differently compared to Mr. Berumen, but I am learning just as much now as I was with Mr. Berumen,” said Jennifer Valverde, PAM junior.

Valentine’s Day is a day full of love and excitement. It’s also a perfect day to show that special someone how much you adore them, maybe even marry them. The LGBT club had a fundraiser on Feb.14-15 during lunch in the quad. This fundraiser consisted the club selling merchandise such as buttons and bracelets. They are also marrying couples to get into the loveydovey feeling. The LGBT club created their own marriage booth. The marriage booth was an arc filled with flowers for decoration. There was even aisle that lead to the arc. The cost of getting married
was $5. The $5 package deal consisted of a Polaroid picture, a ring (Ring Pop), and a “marriage license.” There were many smiles and many laughs. Students really got into the Valentine’s Day spirit. The booth was such a success that film ran out for their Poloroid camera. The booth was extended for an extra third day for couples to come back for their photo that they were unable to obtain due to shortage of supplies. “It went so well. I can’t believe we sold out of Polaroids. It was a success for the club,” said Ryan Alba, president.

Importance of sexual awareness
Behind the flowers and chocolates of Valentine’s Day there are unseen issues and stories to be heard. Teens are constantly getting in and out of relationships, but sometimes all they need is some advice. There are many cases in which students may feel alone or confused, leading them to make poor decisions that might affect them permanently. Health education is important for students to grow
aware of the world around them. Programs such as Planned Parenthood are centers that are meant to better the health of teenagers and young adults who have nowhere else to go. At this point, the idea of teens having sex should no longer be taboo. Instead, there should be more support to advocate these problems in teen lives. Many health classes also lack in the sex education of LGBT teens. Most schools
Black man, bad man?
ANGELINE ANGULO CHRONICLE CONTRIBUTOR
The entertainment industry has been degrading and demeaning the black population for centuries. Black men are usually portrayed as thugs and criminals in movies and TV shows. Meanwhile, black women are viewed as angry, sassy, and with major attitude problems. There are three major stereotypes depicted by the media towards African Americans. The first is a “magical negro.” The magical negro role is when the character has no unique storyline. He is simply used as a support system to the white protagonist. In the movie “The Legend of Bagger Vance” released in 2000, Will Smith plays a role of a mystical caddy. He helps the main protagonist be the best golfer possible. Yet Will Smith’s character is mystical, or unreal to anybody else in the film. Morgan Freeman has also played similar roles in the past. Black male actors are playing drug dealers, pimps, and con-artists. In movies like ‘The Wire” and “Training Day” black men are being given roles that build a negative stereotype for themselves. An organization, called The Opportunity Agenda, wrote in a study, “African Americans playing criminals in Hollywood fuels the racial stereotype that black men are dangerous and
draw to illicit activities.” This is most common when it comes down to black males. Black women have to deal with something more severe. Not only do they have to deal with being overlooked and humiliated for being women, but they also deal with racial prejudice and stereotypes. They are looked upon as neck rolling harpies, violent, and promiscuous. TV shows including “Basketball Wives,” “Love & Hip Pop” and “The Bad Girls Club” all portray a negative view. These shows make a degrading impact in black women’s lives because society becomes influenced by these shows and begin to view black women in the “real world” similarly. For my senior project, I conducted a survey that reached out to the youngest and the oldest of people. My purpose was to get perspective from those who are elderly and have been through years of witnessing the bias in the media towards African Americans. I also wanted to get perspective from adolescents to figure out if this issue is improving, or has just been carved into American culture. One of the questions was “Do you believe that TV shows/ movies are being racist when they give the ‘bad guy role’ to a black man?” An astonishing 80% of people ages 55-82, said that it was racist. However, adolescents ages 11-14, only 43% said it was racist. This proved that this bias in the media has become “regular” or “normal” in American society.to see that 80% of the elderly people, ages 55-82, said that it was racist. teach “straight” sex and do not consider that some of their information might not apply to all their students. Teenagers should first know about the concept of consent. How are students supposed to know about consensual sex if they are taught to say no all the time? Consent also correlates with comfortability as well as protection. If one of your partners is not comfortable with the situation, it can lead to a dangerous ordeal. And with protection, there is less of a chance of contracting a disease, making it more safe
for yourself and your partner. Withholding information from students puts them in harm’s way rather than keep them safe. It is difficult to come to terms with the fact that students will have sex but it’s time to face the facts. In the end, teenagers and teachers must be aware that students need support when getting into relationships. There are questions everyone has and honest answers might be what keep them from making mistakes.
Gap between teachers and students
Gabriella Martinez CHRONICLE REPORTER
With the most recent edition of Hollywood High’s neglected Report Card, a few crucial details have come to light, peculiarities that have proved our school isn’t as fantastic as it advertises itself to be. There is a prominent rift between the majority of teachers and students, and enough of a distance so that it feels as if teachers are not truly present at school every day to guide their disciples toward success and are rather focused on gathering their paychecks and sending their kids on the road. If staff and administrators do not see the issues being presented to them, then this school will continue on the wrong track, where the complications that students have will serve as an invulnerable barrier, one that will not be aided by teachers. Many teachers may seem callous, perhaps even hard to approach, which is then detrimental to the student’s composure around them, making it difficult for students to get the help they so

desperately need. This is also a serious problem for students that are already dealing with social anxiety, and some teachers don’t make it any easier for them when they come to school and act as if being there and educating the following generation is the worst job in the world. There are also few cases where teachers state things that students find damaging to their self-esteem and their drive to pursue their education. They are treated cruelly in front of the rest of their pupils, and are treated like imbeciles when they do not understand a certain subject and cannot master it. This attitude towards students is entirely unacceptable. In order to ensure the development of a well-rounded and educated student body that strives for success, schools must be areas in which positivity is a given on all ends, and motivation coupled with curiosity lace the very foundations of the academy as well. New discipline rewards posers
ESTEBAN GARCIA CHRONICLE REPORTER
As many of the students at Hollywood High School know, a new program has been established in our school grounds. In fact, they have terminated all suspensions. Now suspension is not an option for dealing with students. This new program is called Restorative Justice and it will supposedly “help” the students have a better attitude. Their rewards are child’s play.
It could help but it would take more than a coupon to reform the student discipline on the school. Restorative Justice is another approach to conflict resolution. It advocates righting wrongs through understanding, healing, and social engagement. It seems as if the school staff is treating us like elementary kids with their program. I think that the school is doing poorly to enforce their rules, even though they may take drastic measures. I have seen how teachers treat students with a slight outburst in the class, and then starts ranting to the child outside the of the class. This shows how some teachers don’t know how to treat students without making much commotion outside of class where everyone can see. I would just talk to the student after class and make
an agreement of what caused the outburst. If teachers want students to respect them and other fellow classmates, they must teach them to respect. Treating them without respect will never get through them, it will just cause more problems in class. This is no way to teach a class about discipline. This new “student discipline” program still has a long way to go to have a huge impact on the school and students. If they want discipline from us, then the staff and teachers are the ones who are suppose to have the discipline in the first place so it can be even with everyone. This new policy could probably be the satisfaction of the district, or was it to satisfy us, the students.
amazement of some, they were not eligible for FAFSA or the Cal Grant. And with the new president in office, there is no guarantee that there will always be federal aid as President Donald Trump has made clear that financial aid is one of the services he will get rid of first. A lot of people are also told that there are plenty of scholarships to apply to, but most people do not know where to start. There are multiple websites to go on like FastWeb or UniGo but many of those scholarships are small, petty ones that require an essay or a video, or just a simple lottery drawing that are nearly impossible to get. There are also those few fortunate people that receive a full-tuition scholarship either directly from the school or from prestigious foundations like Questbridge or Posse. Although what some students tend to forget is that one can still apply for scholarships even when they’re at-
tending college. Their schools also offer scholarships, especially new schools like UC Merced that have new money and a small population. Do not give up on scholarships regardless of how tedious it is to apply. The main reason students do not get scholarships is because they never apply in the first place. There have been cases where students receive unexpected scholarships because others do not apply. For example, a Black student won an Asian scholarship because no one applied. What is the harm that can be done when applying for scholarships? It is free money that is being given away to anyone who applies. Don’t be lazy and work on getting that money.
Esteban Garcia runs distance in track.

So, that time of the year filled with events and chocolates and poems have come to date on your calendar again. The worst part is that everyone has dates and plans on that day except you and it’s all because you’re single. Well guess what? This is probably the best thing you’re going to be reading during Valentine’s Day month since this would be your special guidance to surviving 24 hours of Valentine’s Day being single. One thing’s for sure on a Valentine’s Day when you’re single: there’s no need to get up so early and stress over numerous amounts of things that you’re going to need to accomplish as the perfect date that day. Rather than that perfectly set hair with an amazing outfit that will make you need to suck at least 50 percent of the oxygen out from your body, love yourself more and keep those sweats and comfy shirt on with your hair in any kind of bush that you usually enjoy without caring in the world whether folks at your home are judging. If you want to survive for a longer period of time, it’s best suggested you stay away from the “braggers” or the ones that are actually couples. The only things that they’ll ever cause you to feel would be your acknowledgement of how lonely you are and a major headache from their little talks of stressing you over their stress on what they are going to be doing for Valentine’s Day. Avoiding couples will most definitely help you in a sense that you don’t need to see those moments of smooching or a couple looking into their eyes while talking in these “love languages”
that you would most definitely think isn’t real. And the funny thing about it is that this would be the specific date that everyone swears their love to their other half and it technically “saves” a relationship that was on the verge of ending the day before, simply because it’s Valentine’s Day, so why not? It’s the only right day to prove you’re that perfect girl/ boyfriend on social media or for the people around. Men, listen up. This is the time of the year for chocolates with events that consists of big bear dolls and sweet little cupcakes and candles that cost you a fortune. Who and why would anyone do that when you could be saving up for that Resident Evil 7 on your PS4? Which can you possibly survive on the longest, a date that’ll end in a couple hours or that fresh new game that can last you couple days? And to say the wrong things that seemed so right just before you said anything can be prevented with the convenience of being single. To survive as a single man during Valentine’s Day is to keep that wallet full and stuffed just the way you liked it and go on a stress free day doing the usual things you like and enjoy. Overall, Valentine’s Day is pretty much a stressful time of the month with so much to think and plan, but being the single person, there isn’t much to worry about. Treat yourself out and this can be the perfect day to really know more about yourself of who you are rather than to focus on your partner. Watch your favorite shows, take a nice warm bubble bath or simply a soothing shower and just enjoy the holiday with some chocolates randomly placed around the house. Be your own idealistic cat lady or couch potato during the 24 hours of surviving Valentine’s Day being single. Jin Lee is a senior graduating in white.

and don’t be afraid to make the move, there’s no shame in it. She even said “I love you” first. Right before their Halloween show together, “Masque of the Red Death,” Chynna told Dale she loved him before the curtains opened up and the first scene began. Now that’s romantic. Today, they’re in their senior year, are stronger than ever and, nowhere near the end, the couple continues to work through the good and
bad. “Always try to empathize with each other, you can’t get mad at everything,” said Dale, “What makes a good couple is if the good moments outweigh the bad. Be each other’s best friends and just love each other.” Friendship should always come first, according to the two. Put your friendship before your relationship,” Chynna said. They both agree it is important to understand that relationships aren’t the entire world. For some people this is their time to build a relationship with themselves rather than looking for someone else. A fun hobby they even have is quizzing each other on random facts about each other. Chynna and Dale Rush” is what they call the game, sometimes they ask what they wore on first dates or other random questions. This is one fun trick they put together that shows
that before their relationship, they’re best friends, too. To wrap this love story all up, here’s a cheesy ending, their favorite things about each other: “You’re a natural born leader, you have a way with words, with people, and you always empathize with people and you love me somehow,” said Dale. And of course here’s what his lady had in mind, “There’s too many,” said Chynna, “the way you just naturally empathize with people and I really love your eyebrows. I love the way you hold me. Before I didn’t really know what love songs really meant but now I do. You make love songs make sense.”

Love is a wonderful thing unless you’re single, but that doesn’t mean you can’t admire the love that surrounds you. Here at school we see people holding hands, kissing before the bell rings (as if that would be the last time they’d see each other), and, of course, the constant crush posts every Monday and Wednesday. That’s not all there is to these relationships- take this stunning PAM duo for example. Maybe you know Dale Bockelman as the kid with wicked curls or Chynna Tumalad as the girl up on stage in every play. Perhaps once you finish reading their story you’ll have a new “OTP,” and instead of cringing at all couples you’ll smile their way. So how did it all start for the Homecoming King and Queen, anyway? It started for them second semester of their sophomore year when Chynna had just moved into PAM. She was in Fred Auriemmo’s class
when she first tried to approach Dale, but he was more focused on something else. “He didn’t want to talk to me because he had earphones on, but I later manipulated him into asking me out,” said Chynna. Noteworthy albums turning ten in 2017 JASMINE CORTEZ

There are many artists who are popular today because of their music. However, sometimes people are so focused on the popular singles that they forget about music that had came out awhile back and were hits in their prime time and still are today. Many artists, past and present, have created hit albums that have grown to be popular. There are always new albums to listen to, but now in the growing age of technology, there is no need to buy vinyl records when you can easily stream the music from your phone. This makes the feeling of listening to a good album less significant because people now stream music from popular artists, such as Twenty One Pilots, Shawn Mendes, Sia, The
1975, and Panic! At The Disco. Rewind back to 2007 when music was not as accessible as it was today and music was truly enjoyed among the masses. During that time, music was still in a place where artist were discovering their do’s and don’ts for their music. Many albums that were released that year are being remembered as they celebrate their 10 year anniversary. The Alternative Press website mentioned a variety of artists with 10 year anniversary
albums. One of those albums was “RIOT!” by Paramore, which was popularized by their songs “Misery Business” and “We Are Broken.” Many of the albums turning 10 in 2017 are more alternative and edgy styled music, but it doesn’t mean people were not familiar with their music. Take Fall Out Boy for example, their album “Infinity On High” was a hit and is still being remembered as one of Fall Out Boy’s successful albums. The songs that were well known are “Thnks fr th Mmrs” and “This Ain’t A Scene, It’s An Arms Race” which were some of their best hits.
Radiohead celebrates a ten year album as well, their album titled “In Rainbows.” Radiohead, in today’s generation, would be considered not to be “mainstream”, which would make them an unlikely choice of interest, but it makes the experience of such music better. This brings up the band, We The Kings, and their first, selftitled album “We The Kings.” Their album is well known for the popular song “Check
Yes Juliet,” becoming a classic for the hopeless romantic and scene community. Other great albums that turn ten this year are “A Flair For The Dramatic” by Pierce The Veil. Popular songs from the album are “The Balcony Scene” and “Wonderless.” All Time Low’s “So Wrong, It’s Right” album with hit singles such as “Dear Maria, Count Me In” and “Remembering Sunday.” Music will always be varying and changing, making catchy rhythms and deep lyrical songs, but there’s always music that really sticks that will always be a hit even after ten years of coming out.
have also been other critics that have been very strict in their reviews as stated earlier. Rotten Tomatoes rating it 9% with the average count of 3.3 out of 10. It seems the movie has not been recieved by the audience the way the ones working on the film expected, but it all depends on who is watching it and if it piqued their interest. A critic that wrote from the Los Angeles
Times says, “The darkest thing about this...are the black looks of audience members wondering where even the slight charms of the first picture have gone to.” Overall, the sequel to “Fifty Shades of Grey” was a miss with critics, but could be a must watch for people who are into the storyline of Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele.
