A Message From Your New Student Body Officers “I hope to break down these SLCs, these barriers that were intended to better our school, but really secluded us and limited us to what we can achieve as a whole. I also want to boost up school spirit and increase student participation in our day-to-day activities here at Hollywood. I guarantee you that I will work hard day in and day out to fulfill the needs of the students.” Karl Resurreccion Student Body President

Network Upgrade to Ease Computer Problems
ADAM BRENNER EDITOR-IN-CHIEF
World famous Hollywood High has been known to produce famous actors and a vast number of notable alumni; however, it will now be famous in the age of technology with a network refresh provided by the federal government’s E-Rate project and LAUSD. The network refresh will consist of new network equipment in each classroom and office, campus wide WiFi access, and overall faster network connectivity. The network refresh will also include telecommunication giant, AT&T, closing down Highland and Sunset, to trench a dedicated path for a direct fiber line, offering the school a direct fiber connection.

kevin calenzani chronicle reporter “It feels great to know that I’m one step closer to helping out my school.” Those were first words that newly elected Associated Student Body President Karl Resurreccion said after winning the 2010-2011 ASB elections on May 7. The election itself was held on the morning of May 6 in the auditorium, where each candidate gave their speech in front of the entire school. This year included three presidential, two

vice-presidential, and two secretarial candidates. The Associated Student Body officers are representatives of the whole school. “ASB is the government of students within the school; they help regulate school activities… you have the president, vicepresident, and secretary,” said leadership adviser George Hayes. The most important role is the president, “who needs to be the connection between the students, administration, and the alumni,” he said.
Alongside Karl, will serve current juniors Kizzy Dayon as vice-president and Eina Del Castillo as secretary. The ASB president overlooks all student activities, represents the whole student body, and attends meetings regarding the school. The vice-president works as the “right hand man” to the decision making process of the president. The secretary helps manage the student body and the student activities. The new ASB administration will take effect next semester, as they will all serve as seniors.
They’ve already begun working on next year’s events, starting with Homecoming, which Kizzy says, “will be like no other… were doing something different this time.” All officers want to make the most of next year and set the bar for what’s to follow; change is what brought these three students together. “We all want to unite the school and lead it in the right direction,” said Karl. “We want to bring everyone together and make this a memorable year for everyone,” Eina said.
$25,000 to the school, in addition to paying for a permit from the Los Angeles Unified School District, according to Tadeo Climaco, assistant principal. The money from the permit will be split between the district and the school, with the district taking 38% and the school getting 62%, said Climaco. While much of the revenue will go toward covering costs such as custodians, it could amount to more than $100,000, according to Climaco. In addition, Disney has agreed to pay $40,000 for replacing the sod on the field after Toy Story 3
Experience ends on Sept. 3. The money from the permit will go toward athletics and performing arts, among other things, said Climaco. As for the $25,000 donation, where or what that money will go towards is still a question. In the past, money donated to the school has gone towards buying materials the school needs. “Where the money will go depends on the school’s need for next year,” said Climaco. Construction on the field began on May 24, and will occupy about three quarters of the field. The remaining quarter
will be used for sports practice and regular physical education classes. Toy Story 3 Experience will benefit Disney in terms of people watching the film and afterwards paying to be entertained by the several attractions. In addition, Disney has invited the Hollywood High School faculty and their families to a preview of Toy Story 3 at the El Capitan on June 10, followed by access to the “experience” on the field. The Toy Story 3 Experience opens to the public on Friday, June 18.

War on Censorship
Antonio Lopez Chronicle Reporter
A couple of years ago, I believed the Internet was solely for research and games, but as I grew older I had an epiphany. The Internet is used for trivial, fascinating, and macabre topics such as, “How to build a submarine out of coconuts,” “Was Jesus really just an image contrived by UFO’s?” and, “Different uses for leftover toe nails and cockroaches.” There is, unquestionably, a much wider spectrum of subjects, but they may not be appropriate for this newspaper. The real question is whether any of the aforementioned topics (along with all others) should be censored. Essentially, if I lived in China, I would not be able to visit any website that pertains to freedom of speech and democracy. China believes that such a re-
striction merely exists for the safety of its people, but is it really a safeguard or more like an atmosphere of oppression? One thing the general public within the United States has learned to welcome is tolerance towards other’s beliefs. So how is this any different? Things work differently in China; it’s a different world with different statutes. Some people (especially our students) are under the impression that the First Amendment grants them the right to say whatever they want whenever they want. However, the fact still remains that different rules impose censorship in a way that civilians just accept it. Take the Internet filter at school, for example. Are we able to access Facebook or Youtube at school? We can’t, but is it something that’s constantly on our minds? No, because we have grown to accept it. The carelessness of over-
looking censorship can lead to inevitable ramifications. Honestly, reaching equilibrium or a “medium” will never happen, especially with a topic like censorship; it’s always a pick between two extremist points of views. Because of China’s laws, most people who are aware of it usually label China as a place of misery, but that’s judgmental. Sure, a lot of social networking sites (among others) are banned, but China is a completely different country built upon different values. If we cannot accept that, then maybe something is wrong with us instead of them. At the moment, the matter is being disputed , but will society reach a globally accepted conclusion? Will we become more concerned with what is posted for all to see, or will we become more tolerant? At the moment, with the confusion, it’s obviously unclear, but one thing is for sure – the Internet, although relatively new, will continue to cause controversy in the future.

Pro and Con: To Pray or not to Pray, that is the Question JAFET BUCARAM CHRONICLE REPORTER National Prayer Day is a day in which many people show their faith through prayer. For a long time now, many people have gathered and prayed and had a wonderful time together. Recently in our beloved school, there was a prayer said by Raven Leon that brought a whirlwind of controversy. The question on everyone’s mind is: have their rights been violated by being forced to listen to prayer? The answer is no. Everyone in high school is trying to find their way, whether it is finding their social circle, dress style, sexuality, or religion. Some people find it faster than others. Some spend years searching. This prayer shouldn’t be viewed as offensive or as a severe issue. It is a simple prayer that didn’t hurt anyone. It didn’t make anyone lose their legs, make their head explode, or bleed from their ears. Everyone in this school should be able to express what they feel in one particular way or another. Some people do it by drawing, some by music, some by writing, and some by prayer. Many programs in school sup-
port sex awareness, drug awareness and other things. All these things are far more explicit than someone’s beliefs. Why is it so unusual for a person to mention God’s name? Why did it start such a commotion? If a teacher is able to talk about STDs and STIs, why shouldn’t someone to be able to talk about God? Many critics will obviously say, if it was National Prayer Day, then why didn’t anyone of another religion pray to their god? It is because no one stepped up to the plate to bring awareness to what they believe in. We shouldn’t be criticizing Raven’s prayer, we should be applauding her for standing up for what she and many other students, including myself, believe in. Let me remind you that many inspiring people have fought for what they believe in like Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks. Our founding fathers came to this country because they were looking for religious freedom. Christians founded this country. There shouldn’t be any sense of anger or rage towards this. Many people might say that they come to school not to be preached but to learn. However, when someone has a discussion about a topic like this, you do learn, not just someone else’s opinion, but some important facts of life.
KARINA GALVAN CHRONICLE REPORTER It is Thursday at 8:15 A.M. and you are sitting in your advisory. As usual, you hear the announcements being made through the public address system. Your teacher asks you to quiet down. What is unusual this time is that you notice a girl on the speaker has just asked for people to join her in prayer. You suddenly think, “What is this? Is she even allowed to do that?” or “Okay, what is wrong with this school? They have got to be kidding me!” That is exactly what went on in every ones head on Thursday, May 6, otherwise known as National Prayer Day. That day after advisory, some students around campus wondered why certain students and teachers were so interested in the situation. They all thought we were “exaggerating” and that the situation did not require much commotion. Even now, many think that we
should not make a huge deal about something that did not physically harm us. In reality, the prayer that was recited by Lily Raven Leon stirred up controversy among students and staff. I believe that the prayer even reached an extent that it accompanied students home that day. That whole day, I could hear debates in classrooms over whether the announcement was appropriate or not. I felt that it
National Prayer Day is not a bad thing, but the announcement was limited to one religion.
was forced upon an audience of students in what is supposed to be a secular school. It is understood that the announcement was made in honor of National Prayer Day, but we as students should not have been obligated to take part in the event. By “obligated to take part in the event,” I do not necessarily mean forced to pray, but that
we were required to listen and to stand for the injustice being committed against others’ beliefs. National Prayer Day is not a bad thing, but the announcement was limited to one religion. The prayer would have been appropriate if it had not have specified Christianity by mentioning Jesus Christ at the end, because not every religion worships Jesus Christ. Two words, two words were all it took for basically everyone, other than the speaker and possibly followers of that religion, to be offended. Yes, even those who do not believe in a certain God or follow a certain religion were offended. I, myself, was offended. Now imagine those who actually do come from a different religious background. They must have felt discriminated against for not being able to share their beliefs with the school as well., because focusing on one religion makes the other religions appear insignificant. Lastly, I suggest the school, as a secular school, should just stay away from religious biases. It should not involve itself with any type of activity that causes others to believe that the school singles out one religion over any other religion
Pro and Con: Arizona’s Senate Bill 1070, the Right Move? ADAM BRENNER EDITOR-IN-CHIEF Those who call Arizona’s SB1070 bill racist, unconstitutional, unfair and anti-immigration are flat out wrong. SB-1070 is not against immigration, but against illegal immigration. Not to mention California already has a law similar to that of Arizona’s, California Penal Code 834b, which enables law enforcement to notify immigration and customs to investigate a person’s citizenship status. An ABC report filed last year stated that Phoenix, Arizona is the kidnapping capital of the U.S. with an average of one kidnapping per day. Most of the kidnappings are due to the Mexican drug war and cartels that are spilling over the USMexico border. NBC continued to say, “Kidnappings and other crimes connected to the Mexican drug cartels are quickly spreading across the border ... The majority of the victims are either illegal aliens or connected to the drug trade. An ABC News’ investigation uncovered horrific
cases of chopped-off hands, legs and heads when a victim’s family doesn’t pay up fast enough.” Luckily, California does not have as big of a concern as kidnap capital of the U.S., Arizona does. However, both states do share the same responsibility of providing social services, such as education, health care, police, fire and other important services to all residents, regardless of citizenship at the tax payers’ cost. Illegal aliens do not pay taxes, such as income and property tax, which is where the states get funding to offer social services to all residents regardless of citizenship status. The issue everyone is missing is not with Arizona, but as to why people would risk their lives to cross the border over to the U.S. What makes Mexico so bad, and why are people not demanding change from the Mexican government? When the British imposed tariffs to the colonies that they did not agree with, no one fled to another country. Instead, the settlers fought against the British and created what is now United States, the land of the free and home of the brave. Hopefully Mexico and its citizens will do the same – for their sake.

César Chávez once said, “Once social change begins, it cannot be reversed. You cannot uneducate the person who has learned to read. You cannot humiliate the person who feels pride. You cannot oppress the people who are not afraid anymore. We have seen the future, and the future is ours.” If he had looked into the future, would he have said this statement? Immigrants are an integral part of the United States, regardless of what anyone assumes or tries to say. When a person hears the phrase “melting pot,” it is rational to associate it with the United States. The demographic speaks for itself. This country is based on the mass emigration from European nations and mass colonization of the Americas (as well as the forced slavery of the Africans). Who was here first? Why the Native Americans. What a surprise. In the year of 2010, immigrants are facing the beginning
of something that has the potential to destroy the future of this country. Senate Bill 1070 is an unconstitutional bill that was created in Arizona in order to enforce immigration laws to the fullest extent. The law explicitly states that officers can, without a warrant, arrest a person if “reasonable suspicion exists that the person is an alien.” (§2) However, there are countless loopholes in this statement, as proven by people like Sheriff Joe Arpaio of Maricopa County, Arizona. Arpaio has been known to use minor driving infractions in order to check whether the person is an illegal alien or not. This can fall under the category of “reasonable suspicion” and can lead to the immediate expulsion of the immigrant. People who have more faith in the justice system staunchly claim that the immigrant in question was obviously violating a law and that they deserve the deportation. However, this relies on the belief that all law enforcement officials are not transgressing their boundaries and are not simply picking out anyone who has the immigrant “look.” No matter how much every-
one tries to deny it, racial profiling does exist. This is not an attempt at pulling the “race card,” but “immigrant” is almost synonymous with “Latino.” No one understands just how hard life is for immigrants. Countless immigrants have squandered their talents by settling in a job that is beneath them, but they do it out of necessity. Maybe it is the unsanitary living conditions, the lack of potable water, terrorism, or state of deep penury. Maybe they needed money in order to not let their children starve to death. The officers in Arizona never ask these questions and just ship them back to the poverty they came from. Immigrants seek the “American dream.” They want the simpler comforts: food, clean water, a job, and stability. This is not available in their countries of origin. Maybe, just maybe, that is what needs to be fixed. (P.S. If anyone over in Arizona is reading this, yes, I am a legally born citizen, and no, I would not like to be deported). Muchas gracias.

Hollywood’s Network to Be a Whole Lot Faster
Network Upgrade from page 1 “Work has already begun on the network refresh,” stated Michael Gurasich, Communications Engineering for Vector Resources, a LAUSD contractor assigned to refresh Hollywood’s network.
Gurasich started his work for Hollywood back in February by inspecting Hollywood’s current network configuration, modifying and creating technical drawings, and performing visual inspections of each network
ready room, campus wide. Gurasich is hoping to have the network refresh completed by the start of the next school year, 2010-2011. Due to the size of the campus, the amount of equipment, configuration of network devices, testing, and unforeseen circumstances, the project may not be 100% completed by the start of the new school year. In addition, AT&T may not be finished with working on permits with The City of Los Angeles on closing down Highland Blvd. to add a dedicated fiber line for the school. The biggest challenge, according to Gurasich, is the personnel. Gurasich has been working for Vector Resources and on the LAUSD project for the past two years. Gurasich noted that the personnel on campus, such as Frank Muniz, Plant Manager IV, Jaime Morales, Principal, and the HHS-IT staff, were amongst the nicest people he has ever worked with. Gurasich further mentioned that the willingness of the personnel on campus to

during the school year for the incoming 9th graders that are not meeting math standards. The hours of use have not been established but according to Principal Jaime Morales there is a possibility that it can be used all day. As to who will be running the lab, Principal Morales stated, “We are still looking into
that. The district gave us extra money to hire teachers and there are two teachers that are interested in running the lab.” Because Hollywood High is considered a program improvement school, they received a grant of half a million dollars from the state to use before the new school year. A certain
a kiosk, it is still selling tobacco products and is affected by this law. The law prohibits the sale of tobacco products “within 600 square feet of a school” and states that those tobacco businesses near schools are allowed to stay; however, if they sell to minors, they will suffer higher penalties and will be prosecuted more heavily than others. However, it is being debated. Furthermore, the law states that those businesses that are near a school already must close or remain closed before school and after school. The main concern with the selling of tobacco products is that the proximity of stores to schools may influence some students to begin smoking. Katheryn Brow, Media Relations Director for the American Cancer Society, said, “We support that bill because the tobacco industry has to recruit large numbers of new smokers every day to balance
out the smokers who die or quit smoking and kids are their best possibility for doing that because they think kids are vulnerable to everything. They either want to try new things so they see it as peer pressure.” Such an issue branches out to other health concerns at school, such as why no TUPE (Tobacco Use Prevention Education) counselor, who is essentially a tobacco monitor for the school, is present. No counselor has been hired ever since the previous TUPE counselor, Dan Binetti, retired. Another notable dilemma is that Sabrina Valle, the only health teacher in Hollywood High School, has been displaced due to budget cuts. Speculation as to whether or not a health class would be offered within the school arose, but according to Assistant Principal Marco Tolj, another health teacher with more seniority will be hired.

assist him not only helped him, but helped the school achieve a network that would meet the specialized needs of Hollywood. Antonio Manriquez, Video Production Teacher, will get a Gigabit LAN for his media lab, improving transfer speeds amongst computers in the lab that process high definition audio and video files. Manriquez’s will also have direct fiber connection to the backbone of the school from his lab. George Benainous, Computer Teacher, will get additional network drops which will improve network connectivity and transfer speeds within the lab. Vector Resources will also rebuild old computer labs, Room 224 and Room 126 as part of the network refresh. See story below for more information. In addition, each classroom and office will be getting new fiber switches with properly working fans to keep network equipment at proper operating temperature. Some of the technical chal-
lenges that Gurasich faced was designing and implementing wireless signals in the gym. The gym, a three story multifunction building housing both indoor and outdoor basketball courts, an indoor swimming pool, tennis court, weight room, multiple dance rooms, multiple locker rooms and outdoor bleachers, was constructed with massive amounts of concrete and steel and was built after the 1950’s, which weakens the range of wireless devices. Gurasich will be using power over Ethernet (PoE) devices campus wide, but also in the gym, to increase wireless connectivity. The new network equipment, such as PoE wireless devices, managed Cisco fiber switches and Cisco Routers, are more efficient, quieter and cooler then current equipment in place, making it a “greener choice” for Hollywood and the District. The bottom line, Hollywood’s network will not only be faster, but will meet the needs for future technological growth.
percentage has been used on building these labs. The labs will have new Macintosh and PC computers. The grant was given to certain schools that need improving and Hollywood High was one of them. During the summer, these rooms will be used for an orientation camp (Sheik Camp) for
the incoming 9th graders. They will receive a total of 10 credits for attending this orientation. The Sheik camp will be like a “college orientation” according to Assistant Principal, Joseph Cruz Nacorda. Assistant Principal Tadeo Climaco stated that the labs will serve the students highest needs.
Renovations Take Hollywood to the Next Level Hollywood High School will be turning room 126 back into a computer lab and filling room 224 with new equipment. One lab room will be used for the EL students and the other lab room will be used as a math lab
Law Threatens to Protect the Health of Students ANTONIO LOPEZ CHRONICLE REPORTER
A proposed city law prohibiting tobacco sales near schools has received some attention. If it passes, it threatens to possibly shut down the kiosk Highland Cigarettes, which is located across the street from Hollywood High School. The code was proposed by Councilmember Bernard Parks and seconded by Council member Tom LaBonge. The law looks like it’s in good shape to be passed since a vote of 11-0-4 was made to propose it leaving it uncontested. Based on the way Highland Cigarettes is currently operating, it would be in violation of the law if it the law were to pass. According to Isaac Burks, clerk for Tom LaBonge, if the tobacco shop has advertisements that can be seen if one walks right in, it is in violation of the law. Sergeant First Class Adams was also awarded the Bronze Instructor Award. This award is only given to commanders who have aided their students in such a way that they have impacted their lives and perception of the world. Such an award is highly prestigious. The afternoon ended in the cafeteria where all guests were invited for food and refreshments. This year, over 70% of cadets showed up with their parents, which beats last year. applicants will be hired for this summer, and he owes this major need of employees to the attendance improvement of customers and the new King Kong 360 3D attraction. Despite the increasing amount of white collar workers applying to jobs that are below their level of expertise, teens still stand a chance against the major competition. In reality, theme park employers are looking for people that are friendly, perky, and are capable of multitasking, and teens are more likely to be just that compared to an adult who is accustomed to being seated in an office where the last trait needed is perkiness,
said Selph. Teens are not necessarily at an advantage, yet they are not at a disadvantage either. The fact that they are more likely to take a seasonal job than an older
person that needs to maintain a family, and the fact that the pay is usually minimum wage, are what make teens perfect candidates for summer jobs. Yet, there are also competent adult workers facing a desperate situation and their only way out
is taking a desperate measure. Whether the applicant is a teen or an adult, employers are more likely to chose employees based on their qualifications, not on their age. Of course, there is now more competition, but if the teen applicant presents his/her self in the sought for manner, he/she will have a good chance of being employed. Teens need not worry about the surplus of competition because according to Selph, Universal Studios Hollywood reserves 150-200 positions in the food service, retail service, parking lot section, and park services, just for teens. “We are just waiting for
school to be out in order to begin accepting applications from minors ages 16-17,” said Selph. What teens need to do is look for a job that they feel best suits them. They need a positive attitude in order to achieve a positive outcome. The last thing teens should do is allow themselves to become intimidated by the 12.4% unemployment rate because they should take into account that employers just want somebody that will get the job done, regardless of their age. Self confidence helps. If all else fails, students should consider volunteering, which looks good on a resume, according to Dave Snyder, work experience coordinator.
KARINA GALVAN CHRONICLE REPOTER Every year, the American Legion Boys State and American Legion Auxiliary Girls State teach how a government works to the students who attend and help them gain leadership and social skills. This year, the four boys chosen to attend the Boys State program are from SAS and are: Boston Alba, Chris Del Cid, Arlo Insigne, and Eric Sedrakyan. They were chosen through an interview after being picked as the top junior male students in
the school. Boston said, “I hope to learn a lot … I’ll be prepared for the real world.” Arlo said, “Yes, I’m excited for the chance to meet other people from the state and make new friends as well as learn new things from them.” At first, Arlo was an alternate but a candidate decided not to attend anymore, leaving Arlo the opportunity to attend. Unlike Boys State, for Girls State, only the top junior girl of the school is chosen. This year, Afsana Afzal will be attending.
Like her fellow peers who are attending Boys State, she also expects to meet a lot of new people. Before her interview for the program, she talked to Elise Jackson, who told her a little about her experience there. “Because of what I was told by Elise, I am very excited for the trip.” She expects to learn how Girls State operates. She also hopes the experience is very organized, and somewhat like going to a camp. Good luck to all the participants.
Hope Still Lies For Job-Searching Teenagers LISSETTE MORALES OP/ED EDITOR
Even though California’s unemployment rate is currently remarkably high, teens will still have plenty of job opportunities this summer. According to Joe Selph, Manager of Staffing and Training at Universal Studios Hollywood, the renowned theme park receives about 200300 job applications each day, and 1,655 applications have not yet been reviewed. According to Selph, their job flow is doing as well as it was doing three to four years ago. “Last year, we were lucky to receive 20-30 applications a day,” he said. Selph said that over a thousand

Hollywood High Seniors Laissez Les Bons Temps Rouler
ANA BARRON CHRONICLE REPORTER
The seniors celebrated what will be their last dance as Hollywood High students. They ate, danced, and enjoyed unexpected performances by some of their classmates on May 29 at the Universal Sheraton Hotel. Many seniors were dressed extravagantly while others just dressed in simple attire, but no one was wearing plain attire. Upon entering the hotel, the
seniors walked through a red carpet that led to the banquet room. The banquet room was decorated with round tables and chandeliers. The tables had roses in the center and were set for the seniors to come and enjoy their salads. Prom night started out with a cool sophisticated atmosphere while the seniors and some Hollywood High staff members enjoyed their meal. Waiters served the seniors their meals and unlimited beverages. The
seniors ate salad, followed by bread rolls with butter and chicken breasts in chive sauce. To top it all off, vanilla ice cream cake was served as dessert. While savoring their meal, the DJ made a shout out to the Los Angeles Lakers for their triumph. Performing Arts Magnet senior Robert Halliwell started off the dance. He began dancing solo and was later accompanied by other dancers. The lights were later dimmed and the DJ began playing techno and pop
to start the seniors dancing. The dance floor was heavily occupied. PAM senior Bella Jui said, “It’s exciting and thrilling. It’s our last year! Ah!” Once the DJ played the “Cha Cha Slide,” all the seniors raced to the dance floor. John Roque and Jaime Hernandez won prom king and queen. They were given a sash and crown. They danced to “No One” by Alicia Keyes. When asked if he expected his win, Roque responded, “Yes.” After leaving the dance floor,
the seniors continued dancing. Many demonstrated their ability to shuffle. College Counselor Judy Campbell, who retires this year, was surrounded by dancing students on the dance floor. Principal Jaime Morales, Marco Tolj, Tadeo Climaco are just some of Hollywood High’s staff members that accompanied the seniors on their prom night. Hollywood High’s seniors ended their night with wonderful memories that will accompany them forever. Congratulations class of 2010.

Q: Do you have any memorable moments/events during your years of teaching? A: When I was teaching at [an] alternative school in the 1970s, the teachers and students were very free and easy. Q: What are you going to miss the most about teaching? What won’t you miss? A: My good students and teaching. I will not miss the students that don’t want to learn. Q: Are you happy about retiring? Why? A: Yes, because I need a break after teaching for 20 years. Q: What will you do after you leave? A: I will travel and do more work with translation.
Q: What is your reason for retiring? A: I’ve been teaching a long time, and I need to take it easy. Q: Do you want to retire? Why or why not? A: Yes, because I need a break.

Dear Leah, There is this boy I like, but he likes someone else. Should I move on or still have hope? -Anonymous
Q: What are you going to miss the most about teaching? What won’t you miss? A: Dealing with my subject matter; won’t have people to teach glorious literature. (Points to class) Q: Are you happy about retiring? Why? A: Yes, because I’m old.
Q: What will you do after you leave? A: Do stuff with my garden, read books, watch the news, history and science channel. Q: What is your reason for retiring? A: My age and medical problems.
Dear Bad News Bearer, I agree with the fact that she has the right to know. I think that you should tell her because then she has a reason to kick that guy’s butt! What he did is horrible, and yeah it might cause her some pain (and it won’t be your fault so don’t blame yourself), but think of how she would feel finding out you kept that from her. Tell her as nicely as you can and just be there for her if she needs support. Just be careful with what you say because there is a fine line you do not want to cross. One more thing, don’t think of yourself as a bad news bearer, but as a good friend because anyone would be honored to have you as a friend. I know I would be. On the other hand, this could all be a big mix up! What you heard could be made up, or it could be a rumor to make him look bad. Also I think you may have waited too long to say so, and it could make you look bad saying so now. Good luck! Sincerely, Lena
Robert Melling
Q: What are you going to miss the most about teaching? What wont you miss? A: Won’t miss the large classes, will miss the designing and building. Q: Are you happy about retiring? Why? A: I won’t have to wake up at five a.m.
Q: What will you do after you leave? A: I will work around the house and work on pipe organs. Q: What is your reason for retiring? A: I’ve been with the district for 32 years.
Q: Do you have any memorable moments/events during your years of Francis Sele teaching? A: Last week, someone tried to drill a hole with the drill press without putting a drill. First year I was here, I got a note from the principal, saying that there was graffiti on aisle three, seat 11, and to immediately clean it. Q: What are you going to miss the most about teaching? And what wont you miss? A: Being with all the kids and fellow teachers.
Hey there, If this boy doesn’t like you now, then maybe in the future he will, but for now you should just move on and try to find someone that likes you back. Also, telling him how you feel can straighten things out, but only if he is not completely in love with the other girl. If you feel you still have hope, then go for it. You sure don’t want to make things awkward though. Sometimes having a guy’s friendship can be better than being his girlfriend. So if you think you don’t have a chance with him, then you should just move on and be friends. With love, Leah. Dear Lena, My friend is very promiscuous and he thinks because he is a guy, he can get away with it. This is such a double- standard and it makes him seem bad. How do I tell him to stop? -Confused friend Dear confused friend, Haha, one of my close friends is like that as well. Let him know that there is a certain line he can’t cross. If he keeps on being promiscuous, advise him that it makes him look bad and it’s a huge turn off to girls. Sincerely, Lena
Do you have a problem you can’t deal with, and need someone to talk to? Well you can submit a letter to Leah (lee-uh) or Lena (lee-nuh) and we will help you find a solution. You have the option of signing your Q: What will you do after you leave? letter anonymously, or you can sign your real name. A: I plan to move to Palm Springs and relax. Subliminal Side-Effects of the Internet KARLA SAMAYOA COPY EDITOR
Social networking
It all began when your friend told you to make an account. An account on what? A few years ago, it was only Myspace. It dominated any form of communication and began to change everyone’s speech patterns. Whereas before people talked to each other like normal people are wont to do, they began to express a whole day’s thoughts in monosyllabic messages such as “watz up.” Fast-forward to 2010. The Facebook and Twitter movement began to gain momentum and speeded up to what is now categorized as a full time trend. From Big Ben the Clock to a 104-year-old woman, Twitter is home to the most random of stars. Facebook, on the other hand, is home to the biggest time-wasters of the Internet. Welcome to Farmville. This little game won an insane amount of popularity with over 80 million users clicking away at their crops and willing themselves to remember to harvest their precious vegetables in time. However, this is barely touching the depth of Internet addiction, so let’s go deeper…
Youtube
So, you probably have noticed one of the many possible features on your social networking site of choice: videos. And of course you need to go out there and make your own. You decide to feature a day of your life proudly on your account, probably without realizing the whole world can see it. By ‘whole world,’ I mean all 6.8 billion people who can now see just how spastic you really are. Those people include your family, teachers, and possibly even future employers. What’s this? A video of you singing Justin Bieber’s song “Baby” is going to be playing even twenty years from now? You don’t say? Your teacher just failed you after finding the video you made complaining about her? Oh well, you didn’t want to go to college anyway, right?
Gaming
Soon, your Farmville obsession is not enough. You need your gaming fix, and you need it now. So you search around the net. Hmm, World of Warcraft? What’s that? A game you can play for only $15 a month?
Free for the first month? Oh, and don’t forget the $20 fee for installation disks. Plus bonus packs that will cost you more money, and what’s this, your soul? Soon you find yourself wandering into the abyss, never to surface again. You find yourself buying the best weapons, stealing your parents’ credit card in order to buy illegal goods, trying to get to level 60. Soon you even forget the basic necessities. Sleep? What’s that? I need to level up! Food? Who needs it when I have The Twin Blades of Azzinoth? The house is burning down? I better go grab my laptop instead of dragging my little brother out of the flames.
Forums
Nobody understands just how far the addiction can go. Maybe you’re a Trekkie, or a
Twi-hard, a Harry Potter freak, a gamer, or just predisposed to obsession. So you go to where you’ve always found true acceptance: the Internet. Here, you find understanding people who share your addiction or compulsion. Maybe you’ve been stalking around Twitter to find out where that one celebrity
have dinner. Or perhaps you’ve been sending Stephanie Meyer or J.K. Rowling death threats. It doesn’t matter, they’ll accept you and show you how to bring extreme to a whole other level.
Chatroulette
While skulking around the forums, an interesting topic came up: Chatroulette. It sounds like fun, you have a webcam, you’re bored, so why not? I mean, Southpark made an episode about it, so it can’t be that bad, right? Within the hour, you will be regretting the decision and wishing that brain bleach existed. In the annals of such a website, it is no surprise to see gratuitous flashing (most commonly of the male variety), requests for flashing, and general chaos and debauchery. Yes, it is permissible to rock back and forth. No, you cannot repress your memory of the last hour. PHOTO CREDIT: BOINGBOING.NET Yes, this will scar you for life. A modern, haute-dinercuisine restaurant on Sunset Plaza, Ketchup is a crystallization of Hollywood youth. Its striking view of Sunset strip, the modern design, the turned up American cuisine and the ambiance that boasts cool sophistication makes it a hotspot for Angelenos—much like the rest of WeHo’s nightlife. Apart from the seldom paparazzi mobs that crowd the area (not as vexing as those at Boa or Mr. Chow’s), Ketchup is the place to be for an L.A. based young metropolitan. With dishes ranging from $8 to $26, Executive chef Christo-
pher Tunnell crafted a menu well aware of seasonality. The menu includes a pistachio-crusted chicken breast called Shake ‘n’ Bake and a Mac n’ Cheese with white truffle. Current additions to the menu include Truffle Fries—a favorite side for my friends and I—and The Grand Daddy, a 12oz burger with smoked applewood bacon. The lunch menu consists of sandwiches, wraps, and burgers. Ketchup
sure is not your typical burger shop; this trendy spot houses amazing food and a hip atmosphere that attracts the town’s it crowd. The usual white leather booth by the ketchup painting, warm accommodation, and luscious food are the motives for my incessant revisits to this fine establishment.

Seniors Break the curse For the first time in three years, senior girls defeat juniors 18-12
