Hollywood High recently welcomed new Assistant Principal Rosalina Cua Go, a former math teacher here at Hollywood. Overall, Cua Go has about 30 years of experience with high school students. She was Assistant Principal in charge of student counseling at Pacoima Middle School, as well as a math teacher and later the Student Information Services (SIS) coordinator at Van Nuys High. The Assistant Principal position requires tackling issues such as course requirements for graduation, state compliance, and time constraints. Cua Go’s keenness for education is what led her to the counseling position she is in today. She says she has “always loved to teach” and recalls tutoring and helping her friends in math as a 15-year-old girl. “My interest in people extended to counseling to have more impact on impact on student learning,” she says. “I’m happy to be back,” says Cua Go. She expects that our students will strive to learn more than they can in their classes so that they can have better job opportunities later in life. “High school is a great learning experience to get ready for the real world.” Cua Go has many good impressions of the school. She claims that the students impress her as good and respectful young people. However, while looking through students mark reports and state test results, Cua Go concluded that too many students perform at below proficiency level in both mathematics and English Language Arts. Cua Go considers this unacceptable since she expects students to decide to do their best at all times and manage their efforts and time in high school to learn and progress. She explains that it is prudent to develop good work habits for financial success later in life. Cua Go is happy to be back. Cua Go says, “I cannot afford to miss this opportunity to learn.”

BASEBALL ON TOP FOR FIRST PLACE by eduardo umana

For the first time in twelve years, the varsity baseball team is in first place after beating their archrivals Los Angeles High 15-10 on April 15. The mighty Sheiks fought well throughout the game and held on tightly for a well-deserved win in front of their home crowd that helped cheer for them the entire game. Coming into the game, the Hollywood Sheiks felt confident, knowing that this will be the game that they will have. The Sheiks needed to win this game because in the previous game on March 23, they were leading L.A. High throughout the entire

game. They were close to a win but towards the end, few errors cost them the game. Come time for the April 15 game, senior Robert Rodriguez put his game face on and pitched a good game. The Sheiks had a well comfortable lead coming to the fifth inning, leading the Romans 12-3. However, at the top of the fifth inning, the Romans tried fighting back and scored seven runs that inning, making the score 12-10. Coach Cauley said, “I felt nervous but I kept my head held up high because I knew my team can manage the lead,” and indeed

so they did. Senior Michael Bermudez contributed to the Sheik victory by scoring in three runs, freshman catcher Jose Chavez through out two base runners from behind the plate and also hot the ball for a double. This game would set the tone for the Sheiks, as this was a tiebreaker for them for first place. The Sheiks are now 7-1 after beating Miguel Contreras 20-4 and Santee 9-2. The Romans share the same record, but the Sheiks are up on top because they scored more runs against L.A High.

Hollywood students and supporters “take back the night” for assault victims bY YENORY CHAVES Chanting and cheering, students and adults marched, lighted candles in hands, for the event TAKE BACK THE NIGHT on Wednesday. The demonstration, presented by the Young Feminists Club and the National Organization for Women, took place to call attention to the shoddy street lighting for the normally darkened area of Selma Avenue. The event involved an hourlong walk starting from the school’s football field at 7:00 p.m and ended at the Blessed Sacrament parking lot at around 8:00p.m. The walk

commemorated the lives lost in the area, due to prostitution, murders, muggings, and violent attacks. The event also highlighted the backlog of 12,000 untested rape kits. Thousands of rape kits from different cases have failed to have been examined, and have gone unnoticed. This means that those responsible for raping young innocent women, will go on their lives and never rightfully pay for their crime. Unfortunately, there has been a lack of adequate and efficient staff, funding, and supplies to help put away accused rapists

and assailants,. The candles involved in the event are meant to signify the injustice served against the innocent who were raped and never got their fight. “Tell survivors of sexual violence that we are going to do better, that they deserve better,” Hollywood N.O.W. said in a letter to Los Angeles City Council members. When asked about the rape victims, President of the Young Feminists club Sandy Merida said, “they have to know they are not alone in the fight...we are here to support them.”

LAUSD assuages swine flu fear BY LESLIE OROZCO Tuesday, April 28th, Los Angeles Unified School District sent out a bulletin regarding the recent outbreak of swine flu. There have been no confirmed cases of the swine flue in LAUSD and schools will remain open and the district is working to ensure the safety and health of students and staff. The contagious disease has everyone in a pandemonium. Some cases of the swine flu have been confirmed in Mexico, other countries, and the United States, including California The swine flu virus causes symptoms that are similar to seasonal influenza. These symptoms include: fever, cough, sore throat, muscle aches and sometimes a runny nose and

sneezing. Many precautions can be taken to avoid getting infected or spreading the swine flu virus. If you feel sick or have any flu-like symptoms, stay home. Wash your hands frequently with soap and water for 20 seconds, especially before eating and after using the restroom. If you cough or sneeze, cover your mouth with a tissue and throw it in the trash after you’re done then wash your hands. Don’t touch your eyes, nose or mouth because doing so spreads germs. If possible, stay at least 3 feet away from an infected person and avoid any close contact with them. Although the sixty-seven confirmed cases of swine flu

in the United States have all been mild with the exception of one death in Texas, some 150 people in Mexico have died of the virus, according to reports. Although there have been swine flu outbreaks in the past, this particular strain proves peculiar since the individuals it infected fatally were, for the most part, healthy adults with uncompromised immune systems. Health officials are worried that the swine flu might spread and cause a worldwide flu outbreak. Practice these safety precautions and lower your risk of infection. Tell others about them and help keep your friends, family and community safe.

WASC gives Hollywood a good review; final decision is still to come Accreditation team members praise Hollywood High for its challenging shift to an almost “completely new school,” but the school will not get its official “report card” until later this year. BY KIARA HURTADO After visiting classrooms and talking to students for three days, the members of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges accreditation team praised Hollywood High as a “caring, connected and focused school,” but said advisories need “minimal standards for the new advisory classes.” The members said that advanced classes have a “stimulating and rich environment”, but “all students should receive a stimulating and rich environment regardless of their perceived achievement.” A decision has not been made on how long the school will be accredited for. The team turns in its report to the state, which will make a decision in the next several months. The school could get a sixyear accreditation, which is the highest, or it could get a three, two, or one-year accreditation.

According to the WASC website, “Accreditation is important to schools as it impacts students’ access to colleges and universities and career opportunities in a variety of ways. An effective WASC self-study review is a powerful tool for schools to improve the quality of education and more effectively serve staff and students.” With all these changes that this school has had this year the school has become a “less crowded, cleaner, and safer campus,” according to the exit report of the Western Accreditation of Schools and Colleges. The school becoming traditional and the beginning of small learning communities have transformed Hollywood High for the better. The WASC members were impressed with Senior Projects and felt that “students and staff feel that counselors are accessible.”

Seniors Steven Hernandez and Byron Ruiz and junior Jonathan Sosa will be attending the cooking competition preliminaries at Los Angeles Trade Technical College on May 8th, and finals at The Art Institute of Santa Monica on May 22nd. Hernandez, Ruiz, and Sosa, who are part of the Health and Nutrition Small Learning Community, will be observed by professional, citywide judges, famous chefs, and chefs from different colleges. The preliminaries consist of a mold salad, knife cuts, and a French omelet. The finals, according to cooking teacher David Papa, consist of a dish by the name of “Hunter’s Chicken,” and crepes with chocolate sauce and pastry cream. Hunter’s Chicken involves an extensive recipe and ingredients

that have to be added in sequence, according to Papa. He says that finals are all about organization, memorization and neatness. Since the competitors are not allowed to bring the recipes, recipes have to be committed to memory and competitors need to know how to manage their time. To really test the students, the competition’s hosts sometimes throw a curve ball, tossing out an unexpected recipe at the competitors. Papa believes that Hernandez, Ruiz, and Sosa have a very good chance of winning and has high hopes for their performances in the competition. “I am sure both seniors will win scholarships,” he said. It all depends on their grade point average and skill level, which will determine which scholarship they might win, he said.

NEWS BRIEFS Teachers Retiring This will be the last year for three of our Hollywood High School teachers. Jeff Alpert has been here for 42 years, Joseph Grande for 33 and David Loera for 35. They will all be retiring this year after long careers. A retirement and end of the year banquet will be held to celebrate their time at Hollywood High. Penny Drive Hollywood High School held its annual Penny Drive to help cancer patients. This year the school helped a boy named Ramon who was diagnosed with leukemia. An award was given to Mr. Burciaga’s advisory for raising $246.24. Colker’s, Grande’s, and Lange’s advisory came in second. EMINENT DOMAIN The Performing Arts School will be performing “Eminent Domain” on May 8 and 9 at 7 p.m. in the Hollywood High School auditorium. General admissions are $9, Student admissions are $7 and $ 5 for

children and seniors. The show is directed by Keny Long and Lisa Gold and will be featuring “Equinox” Youth Dance Co. and The Gold Dancers. New Website Hollywood High School’s website got a makeover! The new website has a new design which allows visitors to navigate and find things more easily. “We had a successful training session for the media technology small learning community” said Mr. Benainous. SAS orientation Hollywood High School will be holding a School for Advanced Studies Prospective Student orientation on Saturday May 2nd at 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. Those who attend will have a chance to tour the campus and hear a presentation from our teachers and school counselor. The event will be held in the cafeteria. News Briefs written by Leslie Orozco.

Student restrooms are a disgrace to campus Hollywood High’s student bathrooms are notoriously unclean. Here, one disappointed Sheik calls for peers to put an end to the filth and grime. BY ADRIEL VIOLA

A typical scene in the bathroom. Toilet paper: the latest way to decorate?

Advanced placement, or advanced pressure? BY LUCY BLAGG Have any sleepless nights recently? Any sudden nervous breakdowns, debilitating anxiety attacks? Yes, peers, the Advanced Placement exams are two weeks away, and with many students juggling two, three and even four AP classes, the stress has been mounting here at Hollywood High. Guidance counselors, school administration, and college admissions faculty alike regularly expound upon the benefits of AP classes. With the college

application process more competitive than ever, students are taking on multiple APs to give them that extra edge over their competitors and hopefully impress their first choice universities. But as many top-of-the-line private colleges, including CalTech and Ivy Leagues, have become inundated with applicants taking APs and thus decided to stop giving credit for the courses. “[Not all] colleges can give out credit for passing the AP exams... otherwise their entire student body would be graduating in two years,”

says Hollywood High’s College Counselor Judy Campbell. This situation has caused outrage and disappointment in many students, who feel that all their hard work in and dedication to their AP classes has amounted to nothing. The original promise of the AP class was to provide precocious students with a chance to challenge themselves by getting involved with college curriculum, nabbing college credits in the mean time. However, APs have seemingly shifted from their once-prestigious rank to the status of a mere Honors class. Colleges urging students to take AP classes yet refusing to give out credit for them justify their practices by commenting that they want their students to push themselves to take the most challenging classes possible; apparently, regular and Honors classes aren’t good enough for Stanford. Which is bad, because the standards of regular and Honors classes have been sufficiently lowered. While Honors used to be rigorous, difficult classes, they are rapidly taking the place of regular courses; many students have no regular classes at all, but instead take exclusively Honors and AP classes. While this may look good for colleges, it is actually detrimental to both students and schools. Academic rigor should be maintained in all classes, not just those deemed Honors; a regular class should still be able to prove challenging and beneficial to the majority of students. Otherwise, what’s the point of even having regular classes? Why fund and hire teachers for courses that don’t stimulate and fully engage students?

Students making the transfer from middle school to Hollywood High expect to be surrounded by mature students and a clean environment in their last four years of school. But as freshman students start their first day, they notice that Hollywood High’s restroom facilities were not what they hoped for. For quite some time now, using the campus restrooms during lunch and nutrition has been prohibited, and some restrooms are temporarily closed. There are over 2,100 students in the school and there are a total of two out of ten restrooms that are open during break. But take one peek inside the students’ restrooms on campus and even an “emergency” can wait until you get home. The stalls are always dirty; toilet paper is scattered on the floor, urine is soaked on toilet seats. and faucets are in worst condition. This environment creates disgust in even the sloppiest of students. It also seems that more than a few students are confusing their bathroom breaks with their art class. Students have yet to walk into a stall free of drawings on the door and gang affiliated acronyms all over the walls,

followed by the profanity linked to them. These gang activities make students feel like they are in juvenile hall, not a bathroom stall. Although vandalizing school bathrooms may seem like a petty issue, it actually affects people on a very wide scale. Perpetrators probably think they’re showing up school administration, but their actions have consequences greater than an annoyed administrator. Not only are you forcing students to use dirty restrooms day after day, but you’re making the jobs of school janitors harder, too. A way for students to make Hollywood High a better place -- not just for others but also for themselves -- is to at least refrain from throwing dirtied toilet paper and paper towel all over the bathroom floors. We are all adults or on our way to being adults, and it’s about time we act like our respective ages. We should be aware of the results are of these actions and how it would affect the future Hollywood students. It would also be nice if students could resist the urge to tag and draw all over the stalls. There should be no reason for students to “hold it in” until they get home.

Don’t look like a fool at your prom A few tips on how to avoid looking absolutely ridiculous on one of the most memorable nights of your high school career. BY ADRIEL VIOLA

for GIRLS

for GUYS

Don’t go overboard on the makeup, because you’ll just sweat it off from all the dancing anyway.

Tell your date she looks beautiful, even if you’re lying through your teeth.

Try to avoid fixing yourself too much -- guys hate watching girls fix themselves. It wouldn’t hurt to carry your own purse. Guys are not your pet dogs. Don’t flirt with other guys in front of your date, even if he’s just a friend -- it’s rude! Wear comfortable shoes! You don’t want to be the only one not dancing, nor do you want to be dancing barefoot on a dirty floor.

Learn how to properly pin a corsage; a bloody date is going to earn you a slap. Make sure your date knows that you’re courteous: open doors for her, even if it’s out of your way. Introduce yourself to your date’s parents. Make a good impression! Bring breath mints because no girl thinks dog breath is attractive. Bring a camera, because one of your friends will be doing something stupid.

For the first time in Hollywood High School’s history, not only will there be the traditional yearbook, but there will be a digital yearbook, and it will be available to the entire student body rather than just the graduating class. The digital yearbook will include a variety of fun activities that have transpired throughout the school year and it will extend its focus to all students, not just seniors. It will include small segments featuring a diverse group of students. The digital yearbook will reportedly include sports highlights of the entire year; homecoming game; class favorites; senior activities; “Teacher Idol;” as well as coverage of food sales and clubs, according to staff members. The digital yearbook staff also encourages any student to purchase “Shout Outs,” in which they can send greetings to friends and loved ones. Just like the yearbook, the digital yearbook needs a large amount of students working on it and a large amount of time and dedication. Many groups of students have come together to ensure that the

best possible work is done for this new advancement Despite the fact that all this work sounds expensive, the digital yearbook is actually expected to cost less than the traditional yearbook, which is typically sold for upwards of $70. It is said that the digital yearbook is estimated to cost around $20 and the production team believes it will be released sometime this month. Antonio Manriquez, Hollywood’s Video Production Industry teacher, is of course the overseer of the digital yearbook. An Apple Certificated Instructor, Manriquez came to Hollywood High School during the summer and since then has worked nonstop, recruiting students who want a future in the Video Production Industry as well as those who have not considered it before. Little by little he has managed to enlighten students and convince them to take part in something new and productive not just for their SLC, but for the entire school. If the yearbook becomes as successful as planned, it will be a beginning to a more expansive use of modern technology here at Hollywood.

Hollywood High’s track team takes victory BY ADRIEL VIOLA

As the battle of the Track and Field Southern League continues, Hollywood High’s boy’s track team was victorious against Los Angeles High by one/third of a point. Hollywood High’s undefeated streak continues with five consecutive victories. During April 17 competitions, Los Angeles High placed in 1st and 2nd in the high jump event. Hollywood High’s high jumpers Earl Tan and Y’shua Ortiz were tied with one of Los Angeles High’s athletes for 3rd place. Therefore, the three athletes divided a point, which gave Hollywood two/thirds of a point. During the four-by-one relay, Los Angeles High was disquali-

fied for stepping out the lane, allowing Hollywood to be only behind by eight and two/third points. During the last event, junior Earl Tan and Arthur Papazyan and sophomore Willie Feldman were victorious on the triple jump. Therefore, Hollywood High was given nine points, which allowed them to squeak to victory. As for the Hollywood High’s girl’s track team, Betty Bosch placed in first place and Flor Cardenas placed on second. Hollywood High took the victory and won eighty-one to forty six against Los Angeles High.

Softball team wins their way to League Championship by dora chavez Monday, April 16, softball players won in a home game against Annenberg High School with the astonishing score of 17--0 and are now on their way to League Champions, as they currently hold first place. It was another sunny California day. The sun was out and the winds were still blowing from the previous day, it was perfect Sheik weather. As the Hollywood Softball team began warming up, their faces demonstrated determination and hunger for victory. . The starting lineup was made up of team captain Jessica Castanon, Constance Caldwell and Gloria Fuentes. They took the time to set up the list of starters giving the rookies the opportunity to start, and pump up the game. The starters were Jessica Catanon, Constance Caldwell, Gloria Fuentes, Paola and Jasmine

Martinez, Kathy Aragon, Katherine Reyes, Cristina Ortiz, and Diana Hernandez. This startng strategy helped and motivated the rest of the team to continue moving forward. As the game began, the Sheiks took no time in proving to the Annenberg team that it was their field and they were not ready to surrender their winning streak. The lady Sheiks have managed to keep a trajectory 5-0 winning in their league. Captain Jessica Castanon, also pitcher managed to strike out the Annenberg team in less than five minutes and almost allowing no walks to base. As the game slowly moved for the Annenberg team, the Sheiks had total control of the field and as they all took their place at bases, they did not let getting struck out be an option. It seems that the lady Sheiks are on the right path to even more success for the following games.

***** special feature: top five games of all time *****

T

BY ANTONIO LOPEZ hroughout the years, playing video games has been a favorite pastime of adults and children alike. It is used as a method to communicate with someone, spend time with someone, or to just simply have fun and show off how much better you are. Before we go over the Top Five Games of All Time, let us just add that constructing this deal was no walk in a park. Tough decisions have to be made, but nevertheless an agreement was been reached. 5. Mario Kart 64 If you lived your childhood without ever hearing “Mario Kart,” you probably live under a rock: even if you’re a gamer or not. Mario Kart was a game originally released in the SNES, and when it came out it was on top of the food chain. Just a handful of games have the capability to be as great as this game was, and Mario Kart 64 is one of them. This game is often regarded as “what defined multiplayer racing and having fun for the sake of it.” It is a classic, indeed. Its newer counterparts may not be as great,

Monday

but they’re always fun to play. Haven’t played this game? Go out and buy it, now. 4. Resident Evil 4 Ever wondered what you would do if you were ever in a “zombie apocalypse” situation? Well, we highly suggest you play this game. The game play is based on fast-paced gunplay, quick controls, and shootouts involving massive crowds of zombies in large areas. This game makes you use your imagination, and it keeps you on your toes at all times. The games sequel, “Resident Evil 5” was not even considered. It only goes to show you how great number four was. With this out in stores, the Resident Evil series and legacy has been engraved in the gaming world rightfully where it belongs: among the greatest games of all time. 3. Gears of War 2 Gears of War 2 is a third person shooter much like Resident Evil 4 but with a completely different plot. This game also has online play, and despite its limiting, “ten players per online game” it’s still something you have to experience. Just in its

Tuesday

first opening week, the game sold two million units and it’s always thought of when the word, “X-box” comes to mind. The instant you see this game on your television screen, your jaw will drop. The graphics are so amazing; it almost makes you forget that it’s a clone of the first Gears Of War. 2. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare This game has been able to sell ten million copies worldwide. Call us crazy, but that’s a lot. Call of Duty 4 is a first person shooter, which has received considerable amounts of positive feedback from both gaming magazines, and gamers themselves. It is similar to 1,2 and 3 except it takes place in the present time: hence the name, “Modern Warfare”. You’re basically in the army, and you’re against the Soviet Union. The game, scarily, can be closely tied to real life modern warfare and it gives its players just a taste of what being in the army would be like. Sure, you can argue that everybody hasn’t played this game, but if it were, we would all be playing it. There are literally millions of players

online playing it every day. There are some games that you place in a small bag, under your bed, or somewhere in your room when you are done playing them, but this is not one of them. If you have this game, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t be playing it daily. A decade from now, it will be regarded as a classic; that’s almost guaranteed. 1. Zelda: Ocarina Of Time This game is the mother of all action games. This is an action-game, which incorporates puzzles and role-playing into its story. The plot is simple and almost Mario-esque: save the princess. When the game first came out in November 23, 1998 it was immediately given universal critical acclaim, and was a success when it came to sales. Ocarina of Time is a legendary game that we all had as little kids. Even if we look at it now, place it in the Nintendo 64 game slot and begin to play it. It is evident why it is so famous: Look at the graphics! They’re extremely advanced for the Nintendo 64, and are better than most (if not all) Gamecube graphics and could easily compete with the Wii. The game

is loads of fun. There is almost nothing wrong with this game: The graphics are some of the best you will find, the plot makes perfect sense and you just cannot wait to see what happens next. This game puts your intelligence to the test, expecting you to solve puzzles while you are stuck in a room with enemies with one sole mission: to eliminate you. Having this game at #1 is very controversial, but it deserves it believe it or not. This game has been reviewed so many times; it’s not even funny. Several online websites have rated it, several magazines have rated it, and even gamers have decided to rate the game and one common score was, “10/10.” Some magazines never gave a game a ten until this game came outs. This is a game for everyone: girl or boy, teenager or forty-yearold. This game deserves all of the critical acclaim it gets, and if is ever remade, the world won’t hesitate to buy it.

STUDENT POETRY White seems as if it has such popularity With some, that they even wrote down its history.

Black, White, or Gray? by steven martinez

Black has been brought up with supposed Evidence; evidence that sometimes is quite believable. Could there be a Gray? Can it be not Understanding, but an ultimatum, not the “truths” of the White and Black Groups? What if an architect set the foundations for a space, and released an explosive function, And let the waves of repercussion bounce Purposeful ripples in the expanse. The Whites and Blacks might not see that They both are in existence because of each other. Maybe the text of the White explains the Gray in its own manner –somewhat like poetry-that cannot be understood literally. Maybe the Black only explains the already known In the text of is cousin White.

White and Black might mix in their Respective ways to form Gray, but only one Being can profess the validity of Gray. Maybe this being will let us know, Maybe he will not. Maybe White is White. Maybe Black is wrong. Or maybe White is fiction. And Black truth MAYBE NOT … The immense design of things is known By so few people, because they never Once involved themselves in the Creation of the foundation. Note: White = religion Black = science
