George Green’s School
Principal’s Welcome Girl Power! This week in George Green’s we have had some fantastic events which show just how well organised, resourceful and skilled our girls are. On Monday evening, I had the pleasure of going to Stratford Circus with a group of Year 9 pupils for the final of a competition run by the Olympic legacy organisation. The project was carers linked and sought to develop knowledge and skills such as team building, creative thinking, financial awareness, environmental and sustainability awareness and confidence building. Each group had to come up with a business idea for how to use the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park for community use in a financially efficient and sustainable way. Not easy! The competition started in school with the winning team going forward to the final in Stratford with all the other school finalists. Our team of girls were very well prepared with an interesting PowerPoint presentation and speeches for all of them to showcase a section of the plan. Although very nervous, the girls pulled off an amazing performance – they were confident, assertive and sounded just like an experienced business team. Unfortunately they didn’t win: the winning team from St Angela’s in Newham pipped them at the post. However, I was very proud of their attitude after the event: they recognised that they needed to practise more so that their performance on the night was more polished. They had learned something rather than being upset by the defeat. Well done girls! An event on Wednesday after school for girls and young women demonstrated another very positive aspect of our girls. Some Year 11 girls wanted to have a club after school just for girls. So they organised the whole event from advertising to catering. It was such a lovely event! I had my hand hennaed by a Year 13 student and chatted to girls and women staff. Thanks go to the CEEP team for supporting the girls. I hope this becomes a regular feature after school as it was such a great event! These young women have such great potential; they have great careers ahead of them!

MAT CORNER The Brilliant Club has been a huge success for Year 7 and 8 MAT students this half term. They have all worked diligently to access ideas and information which they would normally not be introduced to until they were at university. I have been particularly impressed by their independence and the way in which they have taken responsibility for their own learning. I felt real pride in the students when I received the following feedback from one of their tutors: ‘I was very impressed with the effort and open-mindedness with which pupils at George Green’s engaged with this complex and challenging course. During the tutorials they applied new ideas to stories they already knew with creativity, good humour and questioning intelligence. Class discussions were frequently so interesting that I wished the tutorials could have been twice as long!’ Students will be submitting their final essays at the beginning of January, with the hope of graduating in February from Warwick University. Well done Brilliant Clubbers! If you have any questions about any issues to do with More Able and Talented provision at George Green’s please contact Miriam Wright on mwright@georgegreens.com

Foundation Learning Money Management lessons All term students from FL1 have been practicing their money management skills by going shopping every Monday. Students use their shopping list to choose the items and then will pay and collect the change. We have been to a range of places and shops; Asdas, Tesco’s at Canary Wharf, Sainsbury’s in Lewisham, Co-op at Chrisp Street and even Marks and Spencers at Jubilee Place! FL1 really enjoy learning about money as well as spending it! After all the shopping students will then choose and buy a healthy snack to eat. A big thank you goes to Lisa and Kerrin who work so hard to make sure the shopping trips are possible. Miss Moore
George Green’s 2013 Winter Concert
KS3 VOCAL DAY
The Music department would like to thank all of the pupils who gave fantastic performances at the 2013 Winter Concert. The concert featured pupils from all years showing off all of their hard work and practice over the last half term. The programme featured a balanced mix of styles and genres, including classic and contemporary songs. Well done and thanks go out to the Vocal Group, George Green’s guitarists and the GCSE pupils for providing a great night of music! Also, thanks to all of the pupils, family members and staff who turned out to support the performers.
On Tuesday, year 7 and 8 singers took part in the inaugural 2013 THAMES Music KS3 Vocal Day at York Hall in Bethnal Green. Singers from 11 different secondary schools all across Tower Hamlets took part in a day of singing that included the premiere of a new piece called ‘Crowd Out’ by American songwriter David Lang, a piece inspired by his first visit to an Arsenal football match. Mr. Finch would like to thank all of the year 7 and 8 singers who took part in the event as well as Mrs. Green and Mr. Ward for facilitating the trip.
Mr. Finch would also like to thank Mrs. Green, Mr. Ward, our instrumental and vocal teachers, Tommy, Tim and Benji as well as the premises staff for all of their hard work on and off the stage.

ITGS Big Hitters Trip On Friday the 29th of November, year 12 and 13 pupils in ITGS visited the Big Hitters Conference in the Institute of London. We had different industry speakers highlighting key developments in IT that will give us more practical experience and knowledge whilst studying ITGS. Speakers included Paul Young and Nick Bletzer from IBM, debating whether the government control of the internet was a good thing. We enjoyed listening to the debate and found this informative. When listening to the digital eyes and ears for the protection of the wildlife we really enjoyed seeing first hand technology being used for real time information. This included camera in the wild being used to automatically transfer images via the satellite using real time, and we really enjoyed watching the helicopters and it was the best bit for Muksood and Craig. The presentation about innovation in payments given by the head of strategic innovations James McDonald made us really think about the journey technology will take over the next decade. This was a fun and informative experience overall. Written by Muksood, Craig, Eric and Ali (ITGS IB) All different, all equal, learn today, succeed tomorrow

Great Girls Night Event!
Over 70 girls attended the Girls’ and Young Women’s Consultation Event in the Lansbury Room on Wednesday evening. There was lots going on, fun and games, surveys, snacks, henna painting and music. Most importantly, everyone gave fantastic ideas for things they’d like to see happen in the new Girls’ and Young Women’s group which will be starting up in the New Year. Ideas ranged from quad biking to holding charity events; kick-boxing to having inspirational talks from influential women. The Girls’ and Young Women will read all the questionnaires and ideas and get planning, so watch this space! Thanks to all the staff and girls who came along and very special thanks to the girls who worked so hard to make it such a terrific event: Zahra Al-Aza, Lutfa Begum, Jaheeda Khatun, Hafiza Begum, Fulmodina Saleh, Samia Mohammed, Patrice Riley, Humaira Hussain, Awa Jatta, and Katrina Kavallierou. And thanks to Khadija from sixth form who did some extra special henna. Everyone did a wonderful job!
