Message from the Dean 2013 has been an exciting year for the George Mason University community. Under the leadership of our new president, Ángel Cabrera, we developed a new university vision that included a new and memorable mission, a set of core institutional values, the signature characteristics of the Mason Graduate, and significant commitments that set the trajectory of the university for the next decade. As the chair of the steering committee for the new university vision, I had the opportunity to work with more than 4,000 members of the Mason family to capture the story of our great university in a meaningful way and describe how we will build on our

Gifts in Action In the spring of 2012, keeping with his history of supporting student scholarships at George Mason University, School of Management alumnus David Roe, BS Accounting ‘89 and MBA ‘96, pledged $112,000 in conjunction with a matching gift provided by the School of Management to solidify the Gunston Business Scholars program. “We are all here for the students,” Roe advocates. “We need to do everything we can to make sure that they leave here with the skills that employers want and need. The more we can have students interface with professional business leaders, the better.” In an effort to bring Roe’s vision to life, the program aims to support and nurture five students each year through mentoring relationships with members of the Dean’s Advisory Council and special invitations to School of Management events where the scholars have the ability to exercise their networking skills with professional men and women.

Participation in the event gave Tope the opportunity to spend meaningful time with Heizer and other senior-level women representing several well-known companies including Lockheed Martin, Booz Allen Hamilton, and Northrup Grumman.

Spotlight on our Champions FACULTYSPOTLIGHT Phillip G. Buchanan Professor of Accounting
Since joining the School of Management faculty in 1981, Buchanan has taught more than 6,000 students—leaving a lasting mark on their collegiate experiences. Having also served as the director of graduate programs in accounting and taxation, and director of the MBA program, Buchanan has impacted countless others during his time at Mason. Upon announcing his retirement, Buchanan spoke about a growing concern facing accounting programs. A study by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the American Accounting Association in 2009 stated that between 500 and 700 accounting faculty per year will retire over the next 10 years, while accounting PhD programs average about 140 graduates per year. A number of alumni have sought to address this concern in a way that would honor Buchanan’s legacy at Mason. They established the Phillip G. Buchanan Faculty Fellowship to help support the accounting program by attracting and retaining world-class accounting faculty to George Mason. STUDENTSPOTLIGHT Javier A. Perez Navarette BS Accounting & Finance
In order to complete his dual degree in accounting and finance and a minor in economics, Javier Perez Navarette, former captain of Mason’s Men’s Volleyball Team, had to find a way to fund his education after his athletic scholarship terminated with his NCAA eligibility in the spring of 2013. Perez Navarette learned of the Emerging Business Leader Award, a scholarship awarded to one graduate student and one undergraduate student each year by the School of Management Alumni Chapter, to which he promptly applied. Perez Navarette was honored with the Emerging Business Leader Award at The Annual Business Alumni Celebration this past October. Perez Navarette is set to graduate in the spring of 2014 at which time he will start full-time as an auditor at PwC, a position granted to him with the help of former accounting adjunct professor, Suzanne Hubbard, an assurance partner at PwC. Spotlight on our Champions ALUMNISPOTLIGHT Patricia H. Roberts BS Business Administration ‘77
It was a difficult job market when Patricia Roberts graduated in 1977. The job offers she received were not for the more coveted management training slots she deserved. Mason had provided her with, as she says, “a wonderful education,” so she looked back to the university for help by consulting her former finance professor, Robert Johnston. Johnston was able to set up an interview for her at General Reinsurance Corporation, a Berkshire Hathaway subsidiary. Roberts was promptly hired and dedicated the next 35 years of her career to the company. In 2001, she was named president and chief executive officer of two companies within the Berkshire Hathaway organization: General Star and Genesis. Roberts never forgot how she struggled to get there and how Mason and Johnston helped turn things around. In November 2012, upon the announcement of his retirement, Roberts and her husband established a $500,000 endowed professorship in honor of Johnston, who will retire from the university next year. FRIENDSPOTLIGHT Frank F. Islam CEO, FI Investment Group
Frank F. Islam is a well-known philanthropist whose private foundation supports educational, cultural, and artistic causes worldwide. He participates in a number of non-profit organizations as a board member, including the School of Management’s Dean’s Advisory Council, which he joined in 2012. Of his involvement on the Dean’s Council, Islam feels, “The administration provides a structured format for receiving our feedback, listens, and takes the action required to turn the Council’s advice into plans, programs, and policies. This stands in stark contrast to other bodies that I serve on where the members are told what is going on and are primarily passive recipients of information rather than collaborators in a creative process.” In May 2013, Islam delivering the keynote address at the School of Management’s Convocation ceremony. He indicated that he was not only humbled and honored to have been selected to give the convocation address, but left campus that afternoon feeling motivated and inspired by the conversations he had with several graduates following the ceremony.
