Η πρώτη ιδέα για µια ∆ιεθνή Έκθεση Υδατογραφίας στην Ελλάδα συνελήφθη το 2009 στον Καναδά, στο πλαίσιο ενός Συµποσίου Υδατογραφίας κατά την εκεί συµµετοχή µου. Τρία χρόνια αργότερα, η πρώτη έκθεση µε τίτλο Watercolor International φιλοξενήθηκε στη Γκαλερί Myro στη Θεσσαλονίκη το Νοέµβριο 2012 µε τη συµµετοχή 30 καλλιτεχνών. Το επόµενο βήµα ήταν να συνεχίσουµε µε µια Μπιενάλε Υδατογραφίας στη Θεσσαλονίκη. Και έτσι, µετά από δύο χρόνια, στην ιδιαίτερα σηµαντική Πινακοθήκη της Εταιρείας Μακεδονικών Σπουδών, φιλοξενείται η Watercolor International II, µε τη συµµετοχή εκατό καλλιτέχνών από όλον τον κόσµο. Η παρουσία τόσο πολλών εξεχόντων υδατογράφων, πολύ γνωστών τόσο στις χώρες τους, όσο και παγκόσµια, είναι µεγάλη τιµή για την πόλη µας. Στην έκθεση συµµετέχουν εικαστικοί από την Ελλάδα, Αγγλία, ΗΠΑ, Κίνα, Ινδία, Σουηδία, Νορβηγία, Ολλανδία, Ιαπωνία, Γαλλία, Βέλγιο, Ιταλία, Σερβία, Γερµανία, Ισπανία, Πορτογαλία, Ρωσία, Λιθουανία, Τουρκία, Καναδά, Μαλαισία, Ταϋλάνδη, Σιγκαπούρη, Ισηµερινό και Πακιστάν. Πρόκειται για καλλιτέχνες που προσκλήθηκαν και επιλέχθηκαν µε στόχο να αναδειχθεί η σύγχρονη υδατογραφία, µέσα από τις διάφορες εκφράσεις της. Έτσι εκτίθενται έργα µε ποικιλία τεχνοτροπιών και στυλ, καθώς η σύγχρονη υδατογραφία περικλείει τα ευρύτερα «υδατο-µέσα», µε τη χρήση ακρυλικών, µελανιών, τέµπερας, αυγοτέµπερας και κολάζ. Οι συµµετέχοντες καλλιτέχνες έρχονται από χώρες µε µακραίωνη παράδοση στην υδατογραφία και µε αυτόν τον τρόπο δηµιουργούνται οι κατάλληλες συνθήκες για ανταλλαγή απόψεων και γνωριµία µε διαφορετικές εικαστικές προσεγγίσεις. Μια τέτοια έκθεση πραγµατοποιείται για πρώτη φορά στη Θεσσαλονίκη, αλλά και στην Ελλάδα. Η υδατογραφία στη χώρα µας δεν έχει την πρέπουσα αναγνώριση, καθώς θεωρείται – κακώς – ως απλό ή εύκολο µέσο ζωγραφικής. Η Watercolor International II θα δώσει την ευκαιρία στο φιλότεχνο κοινό της πόλης µας να γνωρίσει την υδατογραφία, τις διάφορες τεχνικές, τις τάσεις που αναπτύσσονται παγκόσµια και µερικούς από τους πιο σηµαντικούς καλλιτέχνες. Ελπίζουµε στα επόµενα χρόνια η έκθεση αυτή να εξελιχθεί ακόµη περισσότερο, να αποτελέσει θεσµό και να γίνει µια από τις πιο σηµαντικές εκθέσεις υδατογραφίας στον κόσµο. The first idea of an international watercolor exhibition in Greece was conceived in 2009 in Canada, in a watercolor Symposium where I was participating. Three years later, the first edition of Watercolor International was realized in Thessaloniki. Myro Gallery hosted it and 30 artists participated. The next step would be to use this as a starting point in order to have a watercolor biennial in Greece. And thus, we are now here, two years later, in the prestigious Gallery of Macedonian Studies in Thessaloniki with one hundred participating watercolorists from all over the world. I have to say that the presence of so many prominent watercolor painters, well known in their countries and all over the world, is a great honor for us. Painters from Greece, England, USA, China, India, Sweden, Norway, Netherlands, Japan, France, Belgium, Italy, Russia, Serbia, Spain, Germany, Portugal, Lithuania, Canada, Turkey, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Pakistan and Ecuador. These artists were invited and selected so that this exhibition focuses in contemporary watercolor / watermedia through its diversity. One can find different styles and techniques in watercolors, as watercolor today includes fluid acrylics, inks, tempera, egg tempera, collage and mixed watermedia. The participating artists come from countries that sometimes have a long tradition in watercolor. Thus, we have the opportunity to exchange ideas and learn from each other. It is the first time that such a watercolor exhibition is organized in Thessaloniki and in Greece. Watercolor is not appreciated the way it should in Greece, as it is considered to be a “simple” or “easy” way of painting. Watercolor International II will give the opportunity to people to learn and appreciate watercolor, its techniques and styles and meet some of the most important watercolor painters from all over the world. We hope and expect this biennial to expand, flourish and become one of the most important watercolor events in the world. Καλώς ήρθατε σε αυτή την έκθεση σύγχρονης υδατογραφίας. Η υδατογραφία είναι ίσως η παλαιότερη µορφή ζωγραφικής, αλλά ενώ αρχικά χρησιµοποιήθηκε σε χειρόγραφα και χάρτες, άρχισε να κινείται αυτόνοµα µε τα έργα του Albrecht Durer και των συνεχιστών του έργου του κατά τη διάρκεια της Αναγέννησης στο Βορρά στο 16ο αιώνα. Ακόµα κι έτσι συνέχισε να χρησιµοποιείται απλώς συχνά στο σχέδιο, σε σκίτσα ή σε χρήση απεικόνισης θεµάτων σχετικών µε βοτανική ή ζωολογία. Μετά το δέκατο όγδοο αιώνα, το έργο τριών σηµαντικών Άγγλων ζωγράφων: Paul Sandby, Thomas Girtin και Joseph Mallord William Turner ώθησε την ακουαρέλα σε πιο ώριµες µορφές και σε ένα ανεξάρτητο µέσο, τέχνης, όπως τη γνωρίζουµε σήµερα. Το πρωτοπόρο έργο τους ενέπνευσε το ενδιαφέρον σε πολλούς καλλιτέχνες για τη χρήση της ακουαρέλας (όπως οι John Sell Cotman, William Blake, David Cox και Richard Parkes Bonnington). Ιδιαίτερα η δουλειά του Bonnington αποδείχθηκε πολύ δηµοφιλής και άσκησε ισχυρή επιρροή στην Αγγλία και τη Γαλλία γύρω στο 1820. Ταυτόχρονα, υπήρξαν σηµαντικές εξελίξεις στην κατασκευή των υλικών για την υδατογραφία, συγκεκριµένα στη µαζική παραγωγή των χρωµάτων µέσα από σωληνάρια, που βοήθησε στην ταχεία αύξηση της απήχησης του µέσου. Στα µέσα του 19ου αιώνα, το ενδιαφέρον για την υδατογραφία αυξήθηκε στις ΗΠΑ, µέσα από τη χρήση του κυρίως από τα µέλη του Hudson River School και µέσα από την επιρροή του Άγγλου κριτικού τέχνης John Ruskin. Σηµαντικοί υδατογράφοι του δέκατου ένατου αιώνα στην Αµερική ήταν οι Thomas Eakins, John Singer Sargent και Winslow Homer. Στις αρχές του εικοστού αιώνα η ακουαρέλα συνέχισε να είναι δηµοφιλής στο έργο πολλών καλλιτεχνών, όπως Wassily Kandinsky, Egon Schiele, Edward Hopper, Georgia O'Keefe, Paul Nash, Eric Ravillious και Edward Burra. Προς το τέλος του 20ου αιώνα, καλλιτέχνες όπως ο Andrew Wyeth, David Hockney και Dong Kingman συνέχισαν να εργάζονται στην ακουαρέλα παρά τη γενική έλλειψη ενδιαφέροντος για το µέσο. Πράγµατι, προς το τέλος του αιώνα, φαινόταν ότι η ακουαρέλα, είχε αποµακρυνθεί από την εξέλιξη της σύγχρονης τέχνης και ήταν σε κίνδυνο να υποσκελιστεί ως ντεµοντέ και ίσως περιττή. Ωστόσο, οι υδατογράφοι συνέχισαν να ζωγραφίζουν παρά το γεγονός ότι η τεχνική της ακουαρέλας θεωρείτο ξεπερασµένη. Τελικά επιµονή τους απέδωσε, επειδή τώρα, στο εικοστό πρώτο αιώνα, µαζί µε την αναγέννηση του ενδιαφέροντος του κόσµου για τη ζωγραφική, υπάρχει µια ανανέωση του ευρύτερου ενδιαφέροντος στο συγκεκριµένο µέσο. Η υδατογραφία χαρακτηρίζεται από ζωντανά χρώµατα, ενθουσιώδη τόλµη και απλότητα, αλλά και από την ελευθερία της έκφρασης των καλλιτεχνών του Νέου Κόσµου, όπως επίσης και από τη συνεισφορά των ανερχόµενων καλλιτεχνών από την Άπω Ανατολή. Υδατογράφοι παρουσιάζονται και ενθουσιάζουν το κοινό για άλλη µια φορά µε τις απεριόριστες (όπως αποδεικνύεται) δυνατότητες του µέσου. Η υδατογραφία επανέρχεται και διεκδικεί το χώρο της στη σύγχρονη τέχνη. Αυτή η υπέροχη έκθεση σύγχρονων δεξιοτεχνών αλλά και νέων ταλέντων από όλο τον κόσµο είναι µια εξαιρετική παρουσίαση των δυνατοτήτων της σύγχρονης υδατογραφίας στην παγκόσµια σκηνή. Welcome to this exhibition of contemporary watercolours. Watercolour is probably the oldest form of painting medium but only began to move away from its primary use in Europe for manuscript illumination, and secondary use in colouring drawings and maps, with the watercolours of Albrecht D端rer and his followers during the Northern Renaissance of the Sixteenth Century. Even so it continued to be used merely as a sketching medium or for botanical and wildlife illustrations until the Eighteenth Century when the work of three English painters: Paul Sandby, Thomas Girtin and Joseph Mallord William Turner transformed watercolour painting into the mature and independent, fine art medium that we recognise today. Their pioneering work inspired a great flowering of interest in the use of watercolour by many major painters including John Sell Cotman, William Blake, David Cox and Richard Parkes Bonnington. Bonnington's work in particular proved very popular and was a strong influence on the fashion for watercolour painting in both England and France in the 1820s. At the same time there were major developments in the manufacture of art materials specifically the mass production of ready made paints in easy to use tubes which helped to encourage the rapid growth in the popularity of the medium. By the mid Nineteenth Century interest in watercolours in the USA was increasing, aided particularly by its use by members of the Hudson River School and through the popular influence of the English art critic John Ruskin. Major Nineteenth Century American watercolourists include Thomas Eakins, John Singer Sargent and Winslow Homer. In the early Twentieth Century watercolour continued its international popularity in the work of artists such as Wassily Kandinsky, Egon Schiele, Edward Hopper, Georgia O'Keefe, Paul Nash, Eric Ravillious and Edward Burra. While in the latter part of the century artists such as Andrew Wyeth, David Hockney and Dong Kingman continued working with the medium despite a general lack of interest from the art establishment which seemed entirely focussed on the paint free zone of conceptual art. Indeed towards the end of the century it seemed as if painting, and particularly watercolour painting, had been eased out of the mainstream of modern art and was in danger of being sidelined as old fashioned and redundant. Even so watercolour painters continued to paint despite being told that painting was dead. Eventually their tenacity paid off because now, in the Twenty-First Century, along with the rebirth of the art world's interest in painting pictures, there is a renewal of popular interest in the medium. Powered by the vibrant high colour; enthusiastic boldness and freedom of expression of New World painters and emerging artists from the Far East, watercolourists are coming out of hiding and enthusing the public once again with the seemingly limitless possibilities of the medium. Watercolour is back with a vengeance and this wonderful exhibition of modern masters and burgeoning new talent from around the world is an excellent showcase of the rapidly growing new contemporary watercolour scene.
