Letter from the Head of School “ What happened last spring was as profound as it was unprecedented. We adapted so quickly because of the strength, resilience, and support of our community. Your commitment and respect for George School are constantly palpable.”
Friends, As we close the books on the 2019-2020 school year, I continue to be grateful and honored at the privilege of serving as the head of school. As this report will attest, George School is blessed with remarkably committed and thoughtful alumni, parents, faculty, staff, students, and friends, whose support makes possible the high quality of education we offer our students. This past year testified to the grit and adaptability of the community. The challenges we faced at times were daunting, especially ensuring that we could protect the health, safety, and well-being of our students, faculty, and staff. While it was heartbreaking to have to depart from the traditions so ingrained in a “Senior Spring,” as well as those for alumni planning to return for reunions, George School came together to support and love one another in remarkable and inspirational ways. We made a quick decision, with the endorsement of the George School Board, to move to online teaching while gladly providing a safe haven for our international students who were unable to travel home. Again, I am grateful that so many of you stood up to help. What happened last spring was as profound as it was unprecedented. We adapted so quickly because of the strength, resilience, and support of our community. Your commitment and respect for George School are constantly palpable, as evidenced by your voluntarism,
your expressions of support for our faculty and students, and a surge of giving, both to our George School Fund and for many other purposes—some specifically to support the changes we have had to make to be George School during a health emergency. As you will see highlighted in the report, new endowments have been created for faculty support, including two new distinguished faculty chairs and a summer sabbatical program. The world benefits from George School’s mission and work, and we all enjoy this beautiful campus thanks to the foresight of John M. George and the many other alumni and friends who have strengthened George School for succeeding generations. We are grateful stewards of their trust and strive now, as always, to be a school where students learn to let their lives speak—through academic exploration, spiritual development, and service to humanity. The challenges of this day are new, but our historic commitment as a Friends school is unchanged. Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions. In friendship,

Careful planning and spending discipline resulted in a strong fiscal year for George School. While the pandemic continues to present challenges, the George School Board and Head of School Sam Houser have remained steadfast in their commitment to the school’s most important resource—our students, faculty, and staff. As custodians of a remarkable legacy, including a spectacular campus and facilities made possible by generations of the George School family, we make sustaining these resources for the long term a critical consideration in every decision. A close look at the operating budget confirms the prudent and careful stewardship of school resources. George School’s tuition for the 2019-2020 school year was $61,250 for boarders and $40,950 for day students. With a student body of 555, tuition brought in $28 million, while approximately 58 percent of students received nearly $12 million in financial aid. Endowment income and gifts to the George School Fund brought in revenue of $8 million, together accounting for nearly 22 percent of our annual operating budget.

George School did operate with a structural deficit between expenses and income that we covered with a portion of the annual $5 million distribution from the Barbara Dodd Anderson Trust. During the trust’s 20-year lifespan, which ends in 2027, we have used annual distributions to fund endowments in support of financial aid and faculty salaries and, as we did in 2019-2020, the operating budget. With the end of trust distributions in sight, school leadership is working to bring the operating budget into balance while increasing philanthropy. We continue to benefit from strong financial markets over the past decade. With the careful guidance of the Investment Committee, the school’s investment pool realized a 7.5 percent annualized return during this period. Total assets as of June 30, 2020, are $176.5 million.

In early spring, the Board of Trustees made the tough decision to close campus and move all classes online. They also decided that student accounts would be credited with savings from services that we couldn’t provide, such as meals, housing, and athletic programs. George School applied for and received federal stimulus funds through the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP), which enabled us to cover four months of salaries and benefits. We continue to focus on maintaining the quality and utility of our campus and facilities. This past year we completed a three-year project to replace the roof on Main and we finished a renovation of the first-floor common areas. We also undertook a major project to re-engineer our stormwater management system. With the increased frequency and intensity of major storms, the old drainage system and piping were routinely overwhelmed, resulting in flooding and damage to buildings. In these uncertain times, George School’s financial condition remains strong. This allows us to maintain a robust financial aid budget, which makes our diverse enrollment possible, as well as the ability to attract and retain exceptional faculty and staff, who carry out our mission and keep George School treasured by our entire community.

Admission
Co-Directors Rohan Arjun ’05 and Kim Major
During 2019-2020, the Admission Office received more than 700 completed applications and admitted 44 percent of applicants. Despite the unexpected challenges of COVID-19, George School enrolled 140 new students in ninth through eleventh grades, for a total enrollment of 524 at the opening of school.
• 11 percent of new students identify as Quaker members or attenders. In addition, 22 percent of new students come from another Friends school. • 17 percent of new students have a sibling who attended George School, and 4 percent have a parent or grandparent who are George School alumni.
• 26 percent of new students come from 18 countries: Brazil, Canada, China, Colombia, Finland, France, Ghana, Hong Kong, India, Kenya, Mauritius, Nigeria, Poland, South Korea, Spain, Turks & Caicos, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The entire 2020-2021 student body comes from 42 countries. • 40 percent of new students identify as domestic students of color. • New students come from 10 states: Delaware, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. The entire 2020-2021 student body comes from 13 states.
While the admission cycle was different in many ways, one thing that has not changed is the quality and diversity of George School’s newest students. Among them is a top-100 US-ranked table tennis player, a National Spelling Bee participant, two junior Olympians, a business owner, and a chili war winner. One student taught their donkey to paint; another is a Harry Potter invisibility cloak designer.

No admission report would be complete without noting the impact of COVID-19. Just days after releasing our admission decisions, the office shifted from in-person to remote operations and activities—including admission yield and recruitment events. From virtual revisit days and online campus tours to video information sessions and accepted student hangouts, the entire Admission Office team, with the help of the campus community, moved our operations online while retaining the warmth, openness, and hospitality that have always been our hallmark. We have embraced the opportunities going virtual brings, enabling us to better reach families around the world, not just in our region. We are excited to continue and to expand new strategies for engaging with prospective families and look forward to seeing the impact of this wider reach.

Associate Head of School Scott Spence The Critter Chronicles by Kate Levesque ’20 and Hana Sparks-Woodford ’20 and illustrated by Celeste Huang-Menders ’22 was one of the stories created in a newly designed Children’s Literature project, a collaboration between IB HL English, Painting and Drawing, and Global Politics students.
Before showcasing the many accolades heaped on students, teachers, and the school in 2019-2020, it’s worth noting the remarkable creativity and flexibility of the George School faculty, who transitioned seamlessly from their usual innovative and challenging on-campus courses to the online learning necessitated in the spring. Polly Lodge’s Intensive Biology class conducted a flower dissection “lab” at home. Brian Patton and Chris Odom shipped robots, microcontrollers, motherboards, sensors, and actuators to their robotics students to use with new virtual tools. And with the cancellation of IB exams, English teacher Kim McGlynn, Arts teacher Jō Adachi, and Global Politics teacher Meredith Baldi ’01 kept their classes engaged through an interdisciplinary project on children’s literature. School Honors George School was named the Best Private High School, Best Private High School for STEM, and the Most Diverse Private High School in Bucks County, according to the
6 | G E O R G E S C HOOL
2020 Niche.com rankings. The school also ranked among the top five boarding schools in Pennsylvania and the top ten college-prep high schools in the Philadelphia region. George School again recorded a 95 percent IB Diploma completion rate (compared to 85 percent globally) and graduated its largest IB Diploma class—52 students— despite the cancellation of final IB exams. AP exams had an alternate, shortened online format. “It is actually remarkable that we had a record number of students sit for a record number of exams,” explained Associate Head of School Scott Spence. “In some cases, students were taking exams at 3:00 a.m. depending where in the world they were.” In total, 330 George School students sat for 521 tests in twenty-three subject areas, with the highest scores in calculus, physics, and 2-D art and design. Forty-six students were named AP Scholars, 17 were named AP Scholars with Honors, 32 were AP Scholars with Distinction, and two were AP National Scholars (with high scores on eight or more exams).
Student Honors Will Carson ’20 and Praveen Rodrigo ’20 were named National Merit Semifinalists, and Will was named a finalist and awarded a $2,500 scholarship by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, among 2,500 scholarship winners nationwide. He now attends the University of Chicago. The George School Math Team performed brilliantly as a squad and individually. Competing twice a week in fall, the team closed out the Philadelphia Math League Challenge as the top-ranked team. It also took first place in the Pennsylvania High School 1-1200 category at the Purple Comet Math Meet (outscoring Episcopal Academy, Haverford School, Hill, Pingry, Princeton High School, and Westtown) and tied for sixth place worldwide in the HS 1-1200 competition. For the sixth year, the team competed in Math Madness, making the elite, Division I bracket every year. They ended the 2019 season ranked 17th of more than 700 schools. Last, but also a first, the team added the Who Wants to be a Mathematician contest, sponsored by the American Mathematical Society, to their busy schedule. With more than 5,000 students
competing, three George School team members—Justin Liu ’21, Pasit Jindanuwat ’20, and Thana Somsirivattana ’20—qualified to the second round. Still math related but not team related, more than 115 George School students sat for the American Mathematics Competition (AMC) in January. Eight students— Will Carson ’20, Forest Ho-Chen ’22, Pasit, Jason Liu ’22, Justin, Thana, Tommy Wang ’21, and Ellen Zhang ’21— advanced to the American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME), with Forest, Thana, Justin, and Ellen among the top 2.5 percent of test takers and Pasit earning distinction among the top 1.0 percent. Writing and arts students were similarly lauded. A record 12 George School students were awarded 13 Gold Keys in the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards for their vision, ingenuity, and talent. (Only 5 percent of entries received Gold Keys.) Writing Award winners Ryan Bencivengo ’21, Miranda Dobkin ’21, Carol Lu ’21, Jiayi Luo ’20 (2), Divya Papaiya ’21, Finn Pollard ’21, Diana Savchyn ’21, Zachary Somogyi ’20, and Aqua Withers Carello ’21 joined Arts Award winners Morris Chang ’21, Phoebe Day ’20, and Ethan Hidalgo ’20. Members of the Curious George newspaper staff visited the Yale Daily News for the newspaper’s annual Journalism Symposium in February and came away with Best Culture Feature for “Tropicalia: The Revolution that swung its hips to the terrors of Brazil,” by Annika Crawford ’22. Jiayi Luo ’20, from Hangzhou China, wrote and published her first book, Flames in Amber: Cautionary Tales of Action and Inaction, entirely in English. It is a collection of eight parallel short stories. Miranda Dobkin ’21 received a National Silver Medal for her short story “The Death of the Mind.” Rhianna Searle ’23 was named first runner-up in the Bucks County High School Poet of the Year contest. She was the only freshman among the, otherwise senior, finalists. Students spoke on global issues in several forums. Celeste Huang-Menders ’22 gave two TEDx talks: “Global Refugee Crisis: It’s Now Our Generation’s Time for Action” at TEDxFarmingdale and “Art and Advocacy: Putting a Face on the Global Refugee Crisis” at TEDxNJIT. Ellie Halstrick ’23 presented her study on mass transit systems in Costa Rica at the World Food Prize Pennsylvania Youth Institute in July 2020. Ellie, David Shields ’23, and Stoney Xu ’23 qualified to participate in the conference by submitting their AP Human Geography capstone projects. 8 | G E O R G E S C HOOL
Student activist Shelby Williams ’21 spoke as a My School Votes Student Ambassador at The United State of Young Women. Faculty Honors Not to be outdone, teachers also got noticed. Geography teacher Kevin Fox received the 2019 Distinguished Teaching Award from the National Council for Geographic Education (NCGE) in recognition of excellence in geography teaching at the primary and secondary levels. This came on the heels of being a 2019 National Geographic Grosvenor Teacher Fellow last year. In January, Chris Odom, Brian Patton, and Academic Technology Integrationist Howard M. Glasser shared their robotics curriculum at the EDUCon Conference, focusing on how to create a thriving, expandable, realworld, and affordable robotics program. Summer Programs Expanded George School expanded its summer academic (for George School credit) and enrichment offerings in 2020, adding courses on marine sciences, landmark Supreme Court cases, journalism, and robotics. Summer classes have proved increasingly popular in recent years.
ARTS The George School Arts Department has always been a powerhouse. Its commitment to visual arts education was recognized with its designation as an Outstanding Visual Arts Community 2019 by the Pennsylvania Art Education Association. The school’s rigorous and inclusive, highly accessible, and highly visible programs were particularly noted. In the performing arts, the 2019-2020 theme was communication. Fall brought Michael Frayn’s comedy Noises Off, which chronicles the hilarious escapades of a touring cast putting on a fictitious play. “This play is perhaps the funniest one I have ever read about miscommunication,” explained Director and Arts Department Head Mo West. It was followed by the winter musical theater production Children of Eden, in which student-actors brought tales from the Book of Genesis to life. “The musical gives us the opportunity to enjoy the beauty of the art of storytelling,” said Mo. George School was one of 20 schools worldwide to take part in a pilot project for the International Baccalaureate (IB) Organization, testing a new curriculum in
global theater arts. Among students’ tasks was to create a collaborative seven- to ten-minute performance project. Each student both acted in and contributed to the project in another major way, including dynamic lighting, sound and music modulation, and movement. With the new IB curriculum in effect in fall 2020, these performances can serve as exemplars for other students. Naturally, arts department courses were hard hit by the spring switch to remote learning. Without the use of George School studios, teachers had to get creative to keep students equally creative at home. Danielle PicardSheehan had students shoot photo essays about life during the pandemic, while Scott Seraydarian ’90 assigned a short film that could be completed with limited access to cast, crew, and equipment. Meanwhile, Owen Buxton ’20 drew dozens of his George School friends, encouraged by studio art teacher Jō Adachi. Without access to clay or wheels, ceramics students used everyday objects to design and create vessels. Teacher Amedeo Salamoni then re-created the class-chosen design in clay.

Student Honors George School’s student-artists received many accolades: Jacob Bright’s ’21 digital image “Bright Black Swan” was featured at the Pennsylvania Center for Photography in fall 2019. Seven students were selected to exhibit at the 2020 Phillips’ Mill Youth Art Exhibition: Nicolas Sun ’21, Hung Hoang ’20, Bob Zhang ’20, Justin Liu ’23, Neha Thumu ’20, Celeste Huang-Menders ’22, and Catherine Tatum ’20, who received an Honorable Mention for her side table. Among 16 George School student artworks selected for the 25th Annual High School Exhibition and Congressional Art Competition, Annika Crawford ’22 received first prize for her oil on canvas painting titled “Don’t Call on Me!” It will hang in the Cannon Tunnel Gallery of the US Capitol for a year and be entered in the National Congressional Art Competition.

AT H L E T I C S The first year for new Director of Athletics Kurt Ruch was a memorable one. The spring athletic season was canceled along with on-campus instruction, but not before exciting fall and winter seasons, which saw teams compete for league titles in many sports and students earn all-league and all-state awards. The Athletics Department focused on physical fitness and training for the spring term.
During an exciting winter 2020 basketball season, the varsity boys’ team finished the regular season 7-1 with their only league loss to rival Westtown. The varsity girls’ team won the Quaker Cup. Swim team captains Sara Matson ’20 and Francisco Correia ’20 earned all-league honors and helped set new pool and school records during the league championships held at George School.
Cougar Success In fall 2019, both the varsity field hockey and varsity boys’ soccer teams won the Quaker Cup. Culminating the fall and winter seasons, eleven riders and four horses on the equestrian team made it to the IEA Regional Finals in what turned out to be the largest ever such event. Finishing third overall, the team garnered fifteen ribbons, with two students qualifying to the Zone 11 Finals, which were subsequently canceled. George School was also awarded Best Home Show of the season.
Student Honors Alexandra Long ’20 and Will Rampe ’20 were awarded the 2020 Kiwanis-Herald Scholar-Athlete Award and received Dick Dougherty Scholarships. Between the two, they earned 21 (Alexandra 12 and Will 9) varsity letters during their time at George School. Bennett Lichstein ’20 won the Mini Max Award, which honors Delaware Valley high school football players. He rushed for 509 yards and scored six touchdowns in seven games, while making three interceptions and 39 tackles.

College Counseling
After submitting 1,344 applications, the 148 members of the Class of 2020, George School’s largest senior class in recent history, will impact the classrooms and campuses of 98 colleges in the United States, United Kingdom, France, and Canada. This accomplished group was admitted to such distinctive programs as the Vagelos Scholars Program in the Molecular Life Sciences at Penn, the IDEAS (Integrated Degree in Engineering, Arts, and Sciences) Program at Lehigh, and NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts for acting and directing. For many in this class, the process of discerning where to matriculate was different. In lieu of attending on-campus admitted student days, students engaged in virtual visits, connected with George School alumni, and evaluated financial aid packages with help from the college counseling office. Their final choices included small liberal arts colleges like Bates, Grinnell, Guilford, and Reed; national research universities like Johns Hopkins, MIT, Stanford, and Vanderbilt; public flagship institutions like Penn State and the Universities of Colorado, Vermont, and Virginia; historically Black colleges and universities like Hampton University, Howard, and North Carolina A&T; such international universities as Ecole d’Ingénieurs ParisLa Défense (France), University of British Columbia

(Canada), and University of St. Andrews (Scotland); and portfolio-driven art programs at Rhode Island School of Design and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. The Class of 2020 plans to study everything from astrophysics to sports management, linguistics to environmental engineering, creative writing to international affairs. Having faced many challenges, these students showed their strength and resilience, qualities that will serve them well in their journey after George School. Juniors, who began their college research in earnest in January 2020, were also impacted by changes brought by the pandemic. Unfortunately, we were unable to host our spring, in-person college fair (in partnership with Solebury School), which normally allows us to exchange information with the admission officers who read George School applications and to introduce students to schools they may wish to pursue. Instead, our office partnered with CIALFO, our college list-building tool, to host our first virtual college fair, offered to guests from Solebury and Episcopal Academy as well as our own students. The event was a great success. Global test dates were also canceled. Because we knew this might cause stress for our families, in April we held an informative virtual session on the changing landscape, and we continue to provide them with the most up-todate information. One thing that has not changed is our ability to offer equal access to SAT/ACT test prep, thanks to a generous grant from an anonymous donor. Since August 2019, college counseling has partnered with a highly regarded local company to provide test prep for interested students (currently virtual). Through the grant, students may receive assistance for the prep course at the same percentage they receive in George School financial aid. Not only have students gained confidence in their ability to take the test, but they have also increased their scores, strengthening their college applications. We will continue to adapt quickly while we help each student think about how and where they will let their lives speak after George School.

Advancement
The 2019-2020 year was extremely successful philanthropically. Not only did George School raise $15,119,603 in total commitments, but we saw increases in numbers of donors, parent participation, and gifts for the Great Green Give as well as significant new gifts for faculty support and to the Educational Improvement Tax Credit and Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit. Development The foundation of giving is the George School Fund. In many ways, this annual fund acts as our living endowment, as gifts from alumni, past and current parents, grandparents, and friends underwrite our current operations and new educational initiatives. Both unrestricted and restricted funds, directed to financial aid, faculty support, and a variety of educational programs, assist in maintaining the high quality of the George School experience. The highlight of the past winter was the Great Green Give, the annual day of giving at George School. The spirit demonstrated that day by the trustee, parent, 1 6 | G E O R G E S C HOOL
Interim Director of Development Mike Perry
alumni, and student volunteers—not to mention generous donors—was palpable, as more than 1,000 gifts flowed into the school for a total of $257,133. Participation in the Educational Improvement and Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit programs also rose to $182,956. These important, tax-wise vehicles enable alumni and friends who live in Pennsylvania to make gifts to George School (as businesses and individuals) in exchange for tax credits. Planned gifts are playing an increasingly significant role, too. Through realized bequests, we received $807,148, which was added to the endowment to benefit the school for years to come. We also heard from numerous individuals that they have included George School in their estate plans. One particularly generous donor designated George School as the beneficiary of their 401(k) to establish a series of distinguished faculty chairs. In addition to underwriting a significant part of a chairholder’s salary, the endowment will provide a $5,000 stipend. What a thoughtful commitment of support that recognizes our faculty in perpetuity.
Gifts to endowment, including the Barbara Dodd Anderson Trust, totaled $5,024,663. Like the value of the endowment itself, the impact of these gifts continues to grow. Board-approved spending from the endowment is approximately 5 percent. Combined with what is raised by the George School Fund, this represents 22 percent of the operating budget, a remarkable testimony to the loyalty and devotion of the George School family and an important countermeasure to tuition growth. Alumni and Parent Relations The Advancement Office does far more than fundraise, however. With the move to distance learning this spring, Alumni Relations had to adjust programming, postponing Alumni Weekend while connecting reunion classes through Zoom. Some classes have enjoyed their online meetings so much that they have continued them. Open mics and coffeehouses streamed online through the George School Alumni and Friends Facebook page also proved popular. We continue to look for new and creative ways to engage with alumni, and we welcome suggestions.
Perhaps the strongest endorsement of the school is the significant increase in parent participation in the George School Fund. Parents—in the form of the Parents Association (PA)—also played a critical role in keeping their fellow parents connected to evolving events, especially when classes shifted online. Thanks to the phenomenal work of the PA, parents were kept informed and engaged during spring 2020 and on into the 2020-2021 school year. Indeed, George School has a lot to be grateful for this year. Alumni, parents, and friends rallied in support of the school, often asking, “What can I do to help?” For all you have done and continue to do for George School, we remain very grateful.

ADAM ’91 AND STEPHANIE BAREA P ’21 “ George School presents its students with diverse opportunities to blossom into their best selves, academically, socially, and spiritually.” Adam Barea came to George School in 1987 through A Better Chance, a program that helps academically talented students of color access better educational opportunities. A member of the Class of 1991, Adam thrived at George School. As he reflects on his own experience and that of his son, Ben ’21, Adam states, “George School presents its students with diverse opportunities to blossom into their best selves, academically, socially, and spiritually. As a Friends school, it is a place where nonviolence is practiced and upheld as a virtue, and where loving thy neighbor is a core tenet of what is being taught, the importance of which cannot be overstated. It is a community that regularly challenges and inspires an incredibly diverse student body to take intellectual and spiritual risks, and more importantly, one that expects and rewards their engagement in the broader world community. This is how you build empathy, and a better world for yourself and for others.” Adam and his wife, Stephanie, are both graduates of enriching boarding school communities (Adam—GS ’91; Stephanie—St. George’s
School ’93), and in the nearly 30 years since, they continue to benefit immensely from those high school experiences, as compared to contemporaries who did not attend boarding schools. They enrolled their son with the hope that he and all future George School graduates would reap the same rewards of a positive boarding school experience, specifically at a Friends school, where selfreliance, academic excellence, and connection with the human spirit are viewed as critical to becoming a successful citizen of the world. The Bareas support George School because of the mission and the promise of what the school can do for other graduates. They also look at the question of support practically, if not them, then whom? If not now, then when? Adam states, “Irrespective of political ideology, economic class, race, gender, or anything else used to divide us in 2020, I think we can all agree that it’s our young adults who will soon be the custodians of our collective futures. Investing in George School is an investment in that future, and we can’t think of a more worthwhile investment than that.”

ABRA AND BRUCE GORBY P ’23, ’23 “ If we want the world to change, we need to feed the young with ideas and philosophy. We need to inspire. Students can change the future by learning from the past.” Last year as parents of twin freshmen, Abra and Bruce Gorby jumped right into George School. They were keen to get involved and wanted to meet other parents and students. In addition to attending Parent Association meetings, Abra volunteered for the cookie and candy drop and they hosted two international students during spring break. Abra and Bruce also supported the School by making a gift to the George School Fund. They embrace the concept of joyful philanthropy and encouraged their children, Charlie ’23 and Sam ’23, to begin to establish their own tradition of giving to George School. Charlie and Sam each made a gift last February during the Great Green Give, the day of giving at George School. “Giving is a joyful act. It makes us feel closer to those around us and that we are part of something bigger,” said the Gorbys. “By giving to George School, we believe we are having a lasting impact. If we want the world to change, we need to feed the young with

ideas and philosophy. We need to inspire. Students can change the future by learning from the past. By embracing the Quaker values of social justice, they can enact change where needed. “As parents, we give a gift to George School in addition to the two tuitions because we want to be certain George School has what they need when they need it. Tuition pays for expenses; donations help enhance the experience for all students.” Their keen sense of philanthropy is vital. Abra and Bruce have come to understand that every culture has a concept of doing for others (i.e. the golden rule Tikkun olam, tithing, volunteering, or just listening and helping) and want Charlie and Sam to do the same. “We lead by example, and now our children give freely of themselves to make the George School community stronger.” The Gorby family reminds us of the power of philanthropy and that you can give and get involved at any age. We are grateful for their leadership and commitment to George School.

LEONARD MAJZLIN ’57 “ Leonard’s gift was so valuable to our faculty....His gift encouraged everyone to full-heartedly put their time and energy into a collaborative learning program.” Sixty-three reunions have passed since Leonard Majzlin ’57 graduated from George School. Over the course of that time, however, one question has continued to occur to him every year: “Is there something this year I can give back to George School in return for the gift it gave me?” As a long-time professor at New York University’s Steinhardt School where he continues to teach in a graduate program of Educational Communications and Technology, Leonard clearly understood the challenges facing George School faculty with the onset of the pandemic. This past spring, he and his colleagues swiftly converted to online teaching to finish out the semester. He too faced the same challenge that awaited George School in the fall. When he heard that George School needed support to help faculty develop their online skills this past summer, Leonard responded. His significant gift underwrote the stipends that faculty received for professional development. According to Meredith Baldi ’01, Director of Professional Development, “Leonard’s gift was so valuable to our faculty.

They felt such appreciation for the institutional support for their work and development over the summer. While many wanted to rest and recover from the stress of the spring, this gift encouraged everyone to full-heartedly put their time and energy into a collaborative learning program.” The work invested by the faculty has made a world of difference. It provided a level of comfort and assurance that their knowledge and understanding of their online skills prepared them to confidently welcome students in the fall and offer them the best possible academic experience. During the pandemic, we have seen many gestures of school support in all areas of endeavor, but when this new and unique challenge suddenly presented itself, we are extremely appreciative that one alum heard and understood the call and responded immediately in such a positive manner. We are grateful that Leonard Majzlin ’57 has continued to keep the needs of George School on his mind for over six decades.

JULIE SPEARS ’97 “ Julie’s gift supports financial aid because she valued her experience of learning among a range of people from different walks of life and the inclusive and open nature of George School.” For Julie Spears ’97, giving back to George School is personal. When reflecting on her time on campus, Julie feels that it was her positive experience and opportunity to grow that calls her to give back each year and support the institution that supported her. She believes giving back is her responsibility. Her support creates opportunities for others and access to the same formative experience she had, regardless of the means they were born into. George School is the place that shaped the foundation of Julie’s adult years. She strongly believes that the adolescent years are a crossroads that define the trajectory of early adulthood. “They are the years that can make or break you.” The workload, challenge, rigor, friendships, Quaker values, outdoor beauty, and the community all played a huge role in Julie’s life on campus and influenced the direction of her life after George School. For these reasons, Julie embraced the annual tradition of giving to George School soon after her college graduation. She loved getting sticky buns in the mail for the first time upon joining the Sticky Bun Society and has worked with her husband to make giving back a regular family pursuit.

Julie learned philanthropy from her father who instilled the importance of giving by encouraging Julie and her siblings to think about what is important to them and follow that as a philanthropic guide. Julie’s gift supports financial aid because she valued her experience of learning among a range of people from different walks of life and the inclusive and open nature of George School. Philanthropy opens access to those who may not be able to afford tuition at George School. Julie said, “selfishly, it makes me feel good to be helpful.” To her fellow alumni Julie offers this, “If you feel George School helped shape you in a positive way and if you feel it was a meaningful experience for you to have been a student there—if your George School experience still resonates with you as a you reflect back on your life—then consider it as a place to give back.”

Geo rg e S ch ool C la ss of 2020 On Sunday, May 24, George School celebrated its 126th commencement and its first virtual one. The ceremony merged time-honored traditions, such as an opening to “Appalachian Spring” and the head of school’s address, with new features, such as the “presentation” of diplomas (received previously and opened on the day). Several members of the Class of 2020 spoke and performed: Michael Clark (invocation), Katie Kendrick (“For the Class of 2020,” an original poem), Vee Rachakarakij (“She Was Mine”), Emily Matson (a speech titled “Reflection”), Jada Wooten (“Conqueror,” original

FRONT COVER: More than just a game, Four Square is a long-standing campus tradition, played on The Class of 1937 Student Plaza, called Red Square. The devotees cite inherent George School values—equality, playfulness, flexibility, community, creativity, inclusiveness, responsibility, tolerance, kindness, and humor—as integral to the game. BACK COVER: George School students told tales from the Book of Genesis in the musical Children of Eden in February 2020. The two-act performance moved from the narrative of Adam and Eve, through the legend of Cain and Abel, to the parable of Noah’s Ark.
