LETTER FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

“ Your gifts will be an inspiration to others. Thank you again for your belief and commitment.” Dear Friends, I write this letter having recently returned from a trip to Asia to visit George School graduates and families in Taiwan, Korea, and mainland China. The latter is a burgeoning group, most of them new to U.S. independent schools in general and to Friends education in particular. Perhaps for that reason, I found their perspectives and impressions of George School especially moving, and I want to begin this letter with a story that illustrates that point. One of our hosts in Shanghai was the father of a recent graduate, and on our last night he spoke about what he and his family have learned over the course of their son’s time at George School. “When I was growing up,” he said, “I couldn’t have imagined that in my lifetime I would be able to afford a house with a refrigerator and stove in the kitchen, much less be able to send my son to America to school. So many things are changing in China, many for the good, but I worry that this next generation will take these amenities for granted and that they won’t understand that many others in their own country and the world still live the way I used to live.” “George School’s focus on service, on community, and on living responsibly have been an inspiration to me,” he continued. “I sent my son to George School so that he would have experience of other cultures and to enable him to attend a good university in the U.S., but he, and we, have received so much more. While I can’t do as much as Barbara Anderson has done, I know that, like Barbara, I want to give back for all that George School has given to us. I know that the true significance of sending my son to the U.S. will be realized when he and his generation show a similar commitment to their society and to their school.” This parent’s experience led him to become a leadership donor to both the Mollie Dodd Anderson Library and the Annual Fund. He also has supported George School’s Global Service Program in China, which sends students and teachers to work with villages destroyed in the earthquakes of 2008. This past spring, this and another Chinese family joined together to form a foundation that will fund George School-China service programs for the next four
years. Several other Chinese families have shown their appreciation in similar ways. That George School and Barbara Dodd Anderson’s example have made such an impact on these families in such a short period of time both highlights and illustrates the importance of the gifts that we are celebrating in the pages of this Report of Gifts. You give because you appreciate the education that you or your children or grandchildren received at George School, because you understand that a strong spiritual and ethical foundation is as important as a strong intellectual foundation, and because you understand the importance of giving back. And your gifts, like Barbara’s and like the gifts of our new Chinese families, instruct and inspire others. Thank you. This year, your gifts resulted in tremendous accomplishment here at George School. We opened the new Mollie Dodd Anderson Library and Learning Commons, which was dedicated on Parents’ Visiting Day in October, with contributions from more than six hundred of you. Your gifts also helped us renovate the McFeely library into classroom space to accommodate our history department. Last year, gifts to scholarship funds made it possible for scores of students to attend George School who would otherwise not have been able to come. George School teachers also benefitted from your generosity this past year, through your contributions to endowed faculty chairs and professional development funds, and through your support of our Annual Fund. I also am thrilled to report that thanks to your help, we met our ambitious Annual Fund goal of $1.1 million. Over the next year, I know that your gifts will be an inspiration to others. On behalf of all of the current students, staff, and faculty of George School, I want to thank you again for your belief and commitment. Sincerely,
2
GIFTS FROM ALUMNI AND STUDENTS The generosity of alumni and students bears witness to the care, intellectual challenge, and love they experienced during their time here, and how that shaped their lives. It is also a mark of their care for current and future generations of George School students. We are very grateful for their support.

“ Just as it's important to give what you can now, it’s also important to give later.” Lam Hood ’55 John M. George Society Member*
How has your connection to George School changed? George School was more than a four-year educational experience for me. It was my life. I grew up on the campus. When I was nine, my father joined the staff, and I became a faculty brat. Dad was in charge of the farm, which supplied milk for the school. As a student, I had several teachers who encouraged and motivated me. I had a tremendous experience. I still go back for reunions and enjoy the beauty of the campus, which has special meaning for me. You have supported George School in other ways. Why have you included it in your estate plan? Just as it’s important to give what you can now, it’s also important to give “later.” If you feel strongly about something, you want to help it continue to flourish after you’re gone. George School had an enormous effect on my growth and development. I believe we have a responsibility to give back to places that have had an influence on our lives.
After George School, Lam continued a life on school campuses. He received three degrees and taught food science, conducted research, and served as an administrator, first at Cornell and then at Penn State. When he isn’t traveling with his wife, Liness, he lives in State College, Pennsylvania. * John M. George Society members have included George School in their estate plans and informed the school of their commitment.

“ I can’t imagine not giving.” Esther Stapler Hart ’52 Sticky Bun Society Member*
Why do you still feel connected to George School? When I go to George School, I feel that I’m going home. It’s been a big part of molding my life. I had terrific teachers, many family members connected to the school, and wonderful friends, whom I still see. You meet people from all over the world, and you realize they’re no different. They just live in different places. I go for reunions and to [daughter] Kathy’s English classes when her kids make speeches. I just love the school. As a Sticky Bun Society Member, why do you give every year? I can’t imagine not giving. My parents gave us the greatest legacy by sending us to George School. Now I want to give back. Each year, the school can only do what it does for students with help from the Annual Fund, so that’s why I keep giving. How do you feel George School benefits from annual giving? The school is able to include kids from around the world. They introduce them to different places and people and they travel to different countries on service trips. It wasn’t done when I was there. It’s important to meet people who are different from you. People who are different make a difference.
When Esther says, “The school was my whole life,” it’s not hyperbole. Her parents, aunts and uncles, sisters, daughters, a son-in-law, and two granddaughters are all graduates, and daughter Kathy and Kathy’s husband, Tom, work there. Like Kathy, Esther was an educator, teaching next door at Newtown Friends School, where she still volunteers−“like playing school without the reports and parent conferences.” She and husband Steve live at Pennswood Village−also right next door. * Sticky Bun Society members have made gifts to the Annual Fund since graduating or for ten or more consecutive years. For Esther, it’s definitely “or more.” The society takes its name from the long-standing tradition of serving sticky buns as a special Sunday breakfast treat and recognizes individuals who “stick” with George School.

Why do you come back for all your reunions? When I see my classmates, they all look 18 to me. I had a very good experience at George School, not only academically but in terms of promoting moral values. I look forward to my reunions and feel good when I return from them. I’ve watched the school change over the years. It’s a different place, but the fundamental ideals of the school remain constant. It provides a wonderful opportunity for kids to become really well grounded and encourages them to get involved in bettering their own communities. Why did you not only give a lead gift but also help with reunion fundraising? Reunions are about coming together with old friends, and we had the opportunity to come together to do something good for a school that means something to us. Working on the committee and making a gift were a pleasure for me. And co-chair Lee Kenworthy was instrumental−and very, very active. We would not have achieved our goal without him. How do you feel about the class gift? We tried to get everyone to come to the reunion and to give at some level. That we got 58 percent participation and raised over $76,000 was very rewarding. Over reunion weekend, we reviewed our options and decided to use the gift for the religion office and a study room in the new library, now named after the Class of 1960. I heard nothing but good things about the library from my classmates and was impressed myself. It’s a super space.
Larry is an attorney practicing in Pittsburgh. He has come to all of his George School reunions and is already looking forward to his fifty-fifth. * As Larry says, reunions are about coming together and reliving your George School days. It’s also a time to join classmates in honoring your experience with a special gift to the Annual Fund. The fiftieth reunion class usually commemorates this milestone with a capital gift, one whose impact extends beyond the current year.

Now that you’ve been out a while, how do you feel about George School? Susie: George School was an important part of my life and important to my growth. I met some great friends. Elizabeth: I miss it. It was small enough that everyone knew everyone but big enough that if you wanted to seek out different people with different interests, you could. It was a great experience to all grow up together. Why do you feel it’s important to give to George School? Elizabeth: George School encouraged “giving back” from the day we got there, through shift. Writing a check is certainly easier than shift. Susie: I was back for my tenth reunion. We hope to point our class reunion gift toward energy improvements. I’m really proud that George School is staying close to the cutting edge when it comes to environmental sustainability. Why do you enjoy being part of the Loyalty Challenge? Susie: It’s great that it doesn’t require a particular amount of money but just that you take part. Coming from Paul and Pam was added encouragement. I’ve known the Machemers since I was little. I had them both as teachers, and Kate was in my class. I love Pam, but clearly I want George School to win. Elizabeth: Actually, our brother and a lot of our extended family went to Westtown. We are the only two family members who went to George School. It’s a good-natured rivalry. Susie graduated from Boston College and now lives in Seattle Washington where she owns and runs a coworking space called Office Nomads, for independent workers and telecommuters. A University of Virginia alumna, Elizabeth lives in Washington DC, and works for the federal government. She loves yoga and hanging out with her two children, whom Aunt Susie describes as “the cutest kids on earth.” * The Loyalty Challenge, is modeled after the annual George School– Westtown athletic rivalry known as the Patterson Cup or “The Moose.” The Challenge is an annual-giving participation competition between recent graduating classes of the two schools. This competition was the brainchild of faculty members Paul (GS ’65) and Pam (Westtown ’64) Machemer and the winning school receives the coveted Machemer Cup each year.

“ When you’re passionate about something, and other people are too, asking for help is easy. I can’t wait for my next opportunity to give back.” Shelley Bitzer p’06, ’10, ’11 Parent Volunteer and Donor*
What prompted you to take on a fundraising campaign? I wanted to give back to a school that so beautifully and graciously embraced our family, not just our children. Our daughter Hannah ’11 is an avid rider and while cheering her on, I noticed that the two riding rings needed to be resurfaced. I decided to raise money to resurface the rings and purchase a dedicated tractor to maintain them. How did you get it done? With George School’s blessing, I worked with Michele Peruto, mother of DeAnna Meckling ’12, and we contacted every family involved in the equestrian program, whether in a PE class or on developmental, junior varsity, or varsity equestrian teams. Enthusiasm and support for the project were tremendous. We raised most of the $30,000 we needed in two weeks, and every gift made a difference. Even parents of seniors took part, despite the fact that their children had just one term left in school. How do new rings benefit George School students? The excitement of the new rings has generated an elevated level of attention and support and awareness toward the equestrian program. On Alumni Weekend, after an equestrian show, my daughter said, “I have never seen so many people here.” Another rider described the new rings as “amazing…it’s like falling on a pillow.” With the new rings we have an environment where students can learn and explore—where they aren’t afraid to fall, pick themselves up, and try again. It’s just like the rest of their high school journey at George School.
Shelley Bitzer is the mother of four children, three of whom have attended George School, as did her mother-in-law, Mimi Bitzer ’55. * Seeing a need and wanting to leave George School a little better than when her children arrived, Shelley Bitzer reached out to other parents to improve George School’s equestrian facilities. Both Shelley and the school are delighted by the terrific response and results.

Gifts from the families of students and alumni play a special role in the life of their children. Because tuition covers less than 74 percent of the cost of educating each student, parents and grandparents help make George School’s unique environment possible through their contributions. “ As parents, we want to become a giving model for our son, so that he can learn to give back to others.” Qi Gao and Nannan Xia p’10 Parent Annual Fund Donors*
What impresses you about George School? We have been very impressed by how our son Tony ’10 has changed, both in his academic study skills and his personality. In China, academics are most important. Service and growing as a person are not considered as important as they are at George School. Last year, Tony went on the Global Service Program (GSP), and this year, he was a leader for the program. We appreciate all the opportunities George School gave to Tony and to the whole family. As parents, why do you give to the Annual Fund? We learned a lot from Barbara Dodd Anderson’s gift. It motivated us to give to George School. As parents, we want to become a giving model for our son, so that he can learn to give back to others. With Tony in college, will your relationship with George School continue? Absolutely. We were very happy to join the George School community, to make friends, and to learn about the U.S. We will continue to give and to share what we learned with the China Parents Association. And we hope that GSP will keep growing and that it—and our role in it—will continue for the next ten or twenty years.
The Gao Family lives in Shanghai and Tony plans to attend New York University next year. Following the 2008 Sichuan earthquake, they became involved in service projects there and worked with George School to launch the inaugural Global Service Program (GSP) to China in 2009. (More than a service trip, the GSP trains educators in how to lead international service trips.) The family also was instrumental in starting George School’s China Parents Association, which provides information, a website, and fellowship for Chinese families with children at or considering George School. * Tuition covers less than 74 percent of the full cost of a George School education. The generosity of the Gao Family—and others who give to the Annual Fund—helps fill the gap, making the kinds of experiences Tony enjoyed available to countless students.

“ Our kids wanted to establish a lasting scholarship so that others can always benefit from a George School education.” Kit and Gerry Laybourne p’89, ’93 Scholarship Endowment Fund*
How has George School impacted your family? George School is a community where it’s cool to care about the world, it’s cool to be smart, and it’s cool to be creative. Our children thrived there. As they raise their children, they want to provide an education for them that is as nourishing and substantive as their George School education. How did your family’s scholarship come to be? As both kids went through George School, we were impressed with former Head of School David Bourns. We approached him about making a donation to do innovative things. He asked if we had talked with our kids about what’s important to them. So we did, and they were clear that they wanted to establish a scholarship so that there would always be a deserving kid benefiting from a George School education. Why did you recently add to your scholarship endowment? We love George School and current Head of School Nancy Starmer’s leadership. We wanted our endowment to keep on giving. The market didn’t treat endowments kindly and tuition has gone up. In order to have a fully-funded scholarship fund, we needed to add to it. We considered contributing to the school for a different purpose, but our kids feel consistently strong about this scholarship. To get a daughter-in-law we love who also is a George School graduate adds to our commitment, and including the kids in the process makes it even more meaningful.
Parents Lawrence (Kit) and Geraldine (Gerry), both educators, were thrilled with the George School experiences of daughter Emmy ’89 and son Sam ’93. At his tenth reunion, Sam reconnected with classmate Herran Bekele ’93, and they married and had baby Skender. Emmy has two children, Elinor and Rex. Gerry hopes that when it’s time, the next generation will consider attending George School. * The Laybourne Family Scholarship Fund was endowed in 1993. Endowments support George School’s future and provide lasting funds for financial aid, faculty support, facility enhancements, and special programs.
