NAIDOC Week 2019

Georges River Council invites the community to join us in celebrating NAIDOC Week 2019. NAIDOC Week is a time to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, history and the achievements of local people. Many activities for children, youth and adults have been organised to continue promoting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander language, culture and heritage across the Georges River area.

NAIDOC Official Opening Ceremony Monday 8 July | 12.00pm-2.00pm Kogarah Town Square, Belgrave Street, Kogarah Learn about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture through stories, song, dance and fun activities for children and enjoy bush tucker. Aboriginal cultural tour Wednesday 10 July | 10.00am-12.30pm Lime Kiln Bay Bush Walk, Oatley Park Explore the beautiful natural and built environment of Lime Kiln Bay in Oatley Park, and learn about the significance of the land and Dreamtime stories to Aboriginal people and their way of life. Cultural awareness training sessions Thursday 11 July | 10.00am-12.00pm Georges River Civic Centre, MacMahon Street, Hurstville Thursday 11 July | 2.00pm-4.00pm SGCH Hurstville 38 Humphreys Lane, Hurstville Led by Local Aboriginal educator Ms Shannon Foster. These workshops are designed for community workers, community leaders and local government officers, with the aim of enhancing your ability to communicate and connect with Aboriginal people and culture.

Voice. Treaty. Truth Panel discussion Thursday 11 July | 7.00pm-8.00pm Kogarah Library and Service Centre Kogarah Town Square, Belgrave Street, Kogarah Exploring the NAIDOC Week theme of Voice. Treaty. Truth, the panellists will discuss what we as a nation need to do to support a meaningful shared future with our First Peoples. This discussion will be led by Teela Reid, Wiradjuri and Wailwan solicitor with Legal Aid NSW and Alison Whittaker, award winning Gomeroi poet and legal researcher with Jumbunna Institute, UTS. Join the Boandik Kids for singing, dancing and movement activities, that help kids develop a greater appreciation and understanding of Aboriginal culture, language and identity. This program will be delivered by Aunty Michelle Jacquelin-Furr and Boandik Woman and Aboriginal Cultural Language Advisor, Brooke O’Donnell.

Speak-up Paste-up Friday 12 July | 1.00pm-4.00pm Hurstville Museum & Gallery Age: 14 years and over

Join Wiradjuri street artist Merindah Funnell from Kurranulla Aboriginal Corporation for a 3-hour workshop on how to ‘Paste-up’ a style of street poster art around the theme of NAIDOC week ‘Voice. Treaty. Truth. Let’s work together’.

Family Fun Open Day Saturday 13 July Hurstville Museum & Gallery, 14 MacMahon Street, Hurstville To farewell the kanalaritja: an unbroken string exhibition, Hurstville Museum & Gallery will be holding an open day for the whole family. Join us for guided tours, storytelling and live artistic demonstrations. Guest artist: Peta-Joy Williams is a Wiradjuri woman, born in Sydney. Peta-Joy currently teaches Wiradjuri at Eora College, facilitating art workshops and mural projects. Exhibitions kanalaritja: an unbroken string 3 May-14 July 2019 An exhibition celebrating the unique practice of Tasmanian Aboriginal shell stringing – past, present and future.

This project has been assisted by the Australian Government’s Visions of Australia program.

A Tasmanian Museum & Gallery (TMAG) touring exhibition.

Kurranulla Aboriginal Corporation 6-28 July 2019 With Brush without fame Kurranulla Aboriginal Corporation brings together a collection of contemporary and traditional Aboriginal art and craft, showcasing work of established and emerging local Aboriginal artists.
