Mayor's Message Contents

Welcome to the Autumn edition of Community magazine, we’ve had an excellent summer full of fun events, the delivery of transformative projects and opportunities to recognise important contributions to our community.

It’s been wonderful to see so many of our community throughout summer.

Our Magic of Christmas event in early December saw a record crowd of 22,000 at Carss Bush Park to enjoy the outstanding free program. Magic of Christmas was headlined by Chris Sebastian and supported by performances from family favourites such as The Beanies, Smurfs and SplashDance, as well as local entertainment groups.

On January 10, Council launched the first Sydney Metro e-scooter trial in Kogarah, which has been a wonderful success through the first few months. I encourage you to test it out yourself and give your feedback in our Your Say community consultation.

The annual Australia Day awards ceremony welcomed new local citizens and acknowledged three outstanding award winners who have enriched our community. A well-deserved congratulations to Vaughn Arambatzis, Michael Flanagan and Daniel Su.

Thank you to our 2024 Georges River Australia Day Ambassador, Amanda Rose,

the founder of Western Sydney Women. A passionate advocate for women in business, and keynote speaker, Amanda presented the Australia Day Award winners and delivered our Australia Day address. We also welcomed the Year of the Dragon with our 2024 Lunar New Year celebrations.

Over 50,000 community members and visitors joined for Sydney Metro’s biggest Council-led Lunar New Year celebration. 2024 marked the 21st year of the festival being celebrated in Hurstville, and it keeps getting bigger every year.

Early February also saw the popular In Good Taste festival showcase cuisines from around the globe and exciting cultural entertainment.

We also officially opened our new Olds Park Recreational and Sporting Hardscape Precinct, celebrating with a community skate competition.

I encourage you to look at our What’s On pages to see what else is coming up and to submit your feedback on our various Your Say community consultations.

I hope you enjoy reading our autumn edition.

Michael Flanagan Volunteer of the Year

From Riverwood residents experiencing hardship to flood victims in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales, Lugarno's Michael Flanagan has been a beacon of hope for many in times of crisis.

A longstanding St Vincent de Paul Society volunteer of more than two decades at the charity’s Peakhurst branch, the grandfatherof-six has provided support to hundreds of disadvantaged individuals and families in Georges River.

Each week for 21 years, Michael has delivered food, whitegoods, and other essential items donated by his fellow parishioners at Our Lady of Fatima at Peakhurst to people in need, including people who have suffered because of homelessness, disability, mental health, incarceration, and domestic violence.

Each Christmas, Michael coordinates food and gift donations to create hampers for families in need, which he and other volunteers personally deliver to provide some Christmas cheer to people doing it tough.

Michael’s altruism extends beyond Georges Rivers' borders. After the devastating floods that struck the Northern Rivers region on NSW in 2022, Michael travelled from Lugarno to Lismore with a team that delivered a donation of more than $10,000 to help flood victims impacted by the natural disaster.

Vaughn Arambatzis Young Citizens of the Year

During the 2020 pandemic lockdowns, a philanthropic 12-year-old in Connells Point turned a simple school project into an epic environmental initiative with only a bucket and a sign outside his home asking neighbours to drop off recyclable containers.

Now 15 years-old, he began his Purple Bins project by collecting the containers, cashing them in, and donating the proceeds to the Sydney Dogs and Cats Home.

In June 2022, Vaughn used funds from a Georges River Council Micro Grant to purchase signage and Purple Bins to place in locations around his neighbourhood to expand his recycling and fundraising efforts, ensuring his initiative could continue for years to come.

Since the first bucket placed outside his home, Vaughn has enlisted many members of the community to recycle with him and ensures that every single cent raised goes directly to help animals in need.

Daniel Su Young Citizens of the Year

Hurstville resident and Sydney Boys High School student Daniel Su, was also named one of Georges River’s Young Citizens of the Year for 2024 for his exceptional commitment to community service, leadership, and social activism.

Throughout 2023, Daniel served as the Chairperson of the Community Services Committee (CSC) at Sydney Boys High School, leading a student executive committee and organising numerous fundraising events, including BBQs, bake sales, movie nights, and donation collections in the Sydney CBD.

Under Daniel’s leadership, the CSC raised nearly $40,000 for 13 charities, demonstrating his ability to drive positive change.

Daniel’s commitment to civic service extends beyond the school walls. In 2023, he founded Help Elevate Youth (HEY), a youth-led not-for-profit organisation that supports people experiencing homelessness in Sydney.

Until recently, he also served as the Chief Financial Officer for Dear Asian Youth, an organisation dedicated to intersectional activism, equality, and equity. He was also recently selected to join the Youth Advisory Committee for Georges River Council.

Kogarah e-scooter trial rolling smoothly in first month

The first shared e-scooter trial in the Sydney-metro area has successfully reached the one-month milestone.

Georges River Council launched the trial on 10 January with 60 Beam e-scooters strategically placed in Kogarah’s town centre for users 16 years and above.

Council’s e-scooter trial Local Working Group, including Transport for NSW, Beam, NSW Police, NSW Health, St George Business Chamber, bus operators and Council staff, recently discussed the trial results captured after one-month of operation.

The initial stage has proved popular with residents and visitors, with 2,023 rides in the first month, averaging more than one kilometre per ride. Results also showed high parking compliance. Beam have received two requests to relocate e-scooters that were not returned to the correct designated parking areas, showing high rider compliance with the riding rules.

The Kogarah trial has seen 1,071 unique e-scooter users, of which 137 were new visitors from outside the local council area. According to Beam data, popular routes include Jubilee Avenue, Bellevue Street, Kensington Street and Belgrave Street.

Data shows strong support of first-mile/last-mile travel in Kogarah, with approximately 20 percent of trips taken starting at a train station, and approximately 15 percent ending at a train station.

Businesses are also embracing the new transport technology, requesting parking stations outside their shops as an added convenience for customers.

Celebrating a Century of Carss Bush Park: An Outdoor Exhibition

We celebrated the 100th birthday of the beloved public reserve, Carss Bush Park, with an engaging outdoor exhibition showcasing its rich history.

From January 22nd until the end of February, park visitors had the opportunity to immerse themselves in the captivating journey of Carss Bush Park, from its humble beginnings to the vibrant community space it has become.

The exhibition, nestled within the picturesque surroundings of Carss Bush Park, featured large historical photographs displayed on three striking cubes. These installations not only paid homage to the park's evolution over the past century but also honoured the enduring connection of the Bidjigal People to the land.

The origins of Carss Bush Park date back to 1863 when Scottish cabinet-maker William Carss purchased the land and built a sandstone cottage for his family. In 1924, following a successful negotiation led by the Blakehurst Progress Association, the land was dedicated as Carss Bush Park, marking the beginning of its esteemed status as one of the finest reserves in the Sydney region.

Throughout its illustrious history, Carss Bush Park had remained a cherished oasis for the community, offering a tranquil retreat amidst urban life. Visitors could explore notable features such as the William Carss Vault, a rare Sydney burial vault, and the historic Carss Cottage, now a museum managed by the Kogarah Historical Society.

Statue of trailblazer feminist author Miles Franklin returned home to Hurstville

A piece of Hurstville’s literary heritage found her way home with the statue of renowned Australian author Miles Franklin returned to MacMahon Street Courtyard as part of larger streetscape upgrade works.

The statue – created 20 years ago in 2003 by sculptor Jacek Luszczyk – was placed onto its new plinth on a bench facing the heritage Ritz Hotel, rumoured to have been the early 20th Century Australian author and feminist’s favourite drinking spot.

“Miles Franklin was a trailblazer of her time who had deep roots in Georges River and is an important part of our cultural heritage – not just in Hurstville, but for Australia as a whole,” said Georges River Mayor Sam Elmir.

Her return symbolises a commitment to safeguarding the rich history embedded in the heart of Hurstville and is a tribute to Australia’s social and literary past.

Stella Maria Sarah Miles Franklin was born on 14 October 1879 on a family homestead in the Monaro region of New South Wales and later moved to Sydney, with a stint in London before returning to live and work in the Georges River area. Her local ties include her former residence at Grey Street, Carlton, and an office in the Jolley’s building at Forest Road, Hurstville.

The statue was temporarily removed in 2021 during the recent rejuvenation of MacMahon Street courtyard and has been returned to its place in its 20th birthday year.

Council’s new partnership with St George Business Chamber

In October 2023 Georges River Council became a gold sponsor of the St George Business Chamber. A thriving business chamber is vitally important to local economic development.

The St George Business Chamber, under the leadership of President Tony Baddour, has developed a ‘Four-Pillar Strategy’, which aligns strongly with Council’s economic development program. The Chamber has four focus areas: collaboration, economic development, infrastructure and beautification & activation of public spaces.

Since becoming a gold sponsor, Council has delivered several events in partnership with the Chamber. These events have provided local businesses with knowledge and resources on topics such as cybersecurity and artificial intelligence.

Georges River Council's Community Grants Round 1

Georges River Council's Community Grants Program 2023-2024 has already awarded over $130,000 during Round one to 19 community organisations for 20 projects. These organisations span various sectors such as arts, culture, and environmental conservation. Mayor Sam Elmir praised the commitment of local organisations, emphasising their role in enhancing community life. The funded projects include efforts to foster digital inclusion, provide mentoring for at-risk men, offer DJ workshops for youth, and promote social inclusion and job readiness for individuals with autism and ADHD.

Successful applications were chosen based on their alignment with Council's Community Strategic Plan and other relevant strategies. These initiatives represent Council’s commitment to fostering a thriving, interconnected, and inclusive community.

Guide Dogs NSW/ACT Access Training for Industry Program

Guide Dogs NSW/ACT was awarded funding through the Georges River Community Grant Program 2021-2022 Round 2. This funding is providing Access Training for Industry (ATI) sessions, free of charge, to service providers in the Georges River area to enhance the accessibility of spaces, places and services for people living with low vision or blindness. ATI sessions are co-presented with Guide Dogs NSW/ACT staff, as well as speakers with lived experience of low vision or blindness, and provide an opportunity to learn about:

• various types of vision loss and how it can impact the individual

• different mobility aids that are available, and how to use them, for example: long canes, types of magnifiers and MiniGuides (an echo-location detector)

• common accessibility issues in the community, and how that impacts an individual living with low vision or blindness to confidently travel and interact with the community

• ways to implement sustainable changes for people with low vision or blindness who may experience exclusion and difficulty navigating environments

These sessions are beneficial for all service providers, especially those with frontline customer service staff who may interact with members of the public living with low vision or blindness.

Guide Dogs NSW/ACT recently provided ATI sessions to Allied Health Professionals (Physiotherapists, and Occupational Therapists) at a local aged care facility in Georges River. Coming sessions with Georges River Libraries staff and a local care provider will enable them to better support and respond to the needs of their diverse clients.

Georges River Council is proud to support Guide Dogs NSW/ACT to create an accessible community for those living with low vision or blindness.

If your business is interested in participating in free Access Training from Guide Dogs NSW/ACT, please email stleonards@guidedogs.com.au to speak to one of their staff.

The Museum & Gallery on MacMahon Street

20 January – 5 May 2024

Celebrating 20 Years of Artistic Legacy At Hurstville Museum & Gallery

The Museum & Gallery on MacMahon Street explores and celebrates the 20th anniversary of Hurstville Museum & Gallery. It has provided an important cultural service to the community now for 20 years, dedicated to preserving the unique history of the region and supporting local artists.

The idea of a museum and gallery for the region began with the Hurstville Historical Society. Formed in November 1967, the Society developed a museum display in the basement of the Hurstville Civic Centre which opened in March 1970. By 1985 the Society had received over 2,500 donations of local history objects and were successful in receiving a grant for the restoration of the historic Centennial Bakery building, corner of Forest Road and Bridge Street, in conjunction with Hurstville Council. The Centennial Bakery Museum opened in 1994. The museum then relocated to 14 MacMahon Street, Hurstville, under the auspices of Hurstville City Council, becoming the St George Regional Museum in 2004.

The building that today houses Hurstville Museum & Gallery was built in 1929 by Dr John Crakanthorp as his medical practice and family home.

The Domestic Domain was the first permanent exhibition at the Museum & Gallery, highlighting women's unpaid work in the home.

In February 2009, Hurstville Museum & Gallery (formerly St George Regional Museum) opened a new permanent exhibition, Living on the Water’s Edge: Stories of St George, in three rooms, exploring stories related to the history of the St George region. By November 2015 this exhibition had been refreshed to become St George Stories: People - Places - Community.

Hurstville Museum & Gallery has been acknowledged at the Museums & Galleries National Awards (MAGNA) five times through Winner and Highly Commended awards between 2016 and 2021.

Most recently Artbomb: connect + create, an exhibition that brought creativity back to the Museum & Gallery after COVID-19, through visual art, writing and performance, won a Highly Commended award.

Aside from major exhibitions, the Dragon’s Lair Gallery is a dedicated space within Hurstville Museum & Gallery for emerging and established artists and community groups with a connection to the Georges River area to show their works.

Since 2004 nearly 200 shows have been exhibited in this space, reflecting the creative and innovative diversity that exists in the area.

Did you know that Hurstville Museum & Gallery's collection contains over 40 cakes?

The cakes were donated by the former Australian Cake and Sugar Art Gallery Museum and date back to the 1980s. A selection of mini cakes is included in The Museum & Gallery on MacMahon Street exhibition.

Hurstville Museum & Gallery is proud to present ZOONOSES, a major touring exhibition showcasing artworks by Dr Nicola Hooper, who has taken the darker side of nature and turned it into exquisite, thought-provoking art.

Through drawing and lithography, Nicola uses fairy-tale iconology and rhymes to explore concepts surrounding zoonoses (animal diseases that can infect humans) and how we perceive certain animals in the context of fear and disease.

Speaking about her work, Nicola said, “These works use fairy tales, myths and rhymes as a metaphor to discuss zoonotic outbreaks in a non-threatening and restrained manner. I have carefully studied animal specimens in museum collections and applied them to archival and current newspaper stories of zoonotic diseases that have had devastating effects on human life.”

The ZOONOSES exhibition stems from Nicola’s doctoral research and provides insightful observations into our contradictory perceptions of animals in relation to fear of disease.

Nicola says she aims to generate greater understanding of the natural world through her artwork. She explained, “It is interesting how we humans both despise animals for their role in spreading disease across species, yet also revere them as they provide us with the means of vaccination through scientific testing and discovery.”

ZOONOSES will be displayed at Hurstville Museum & Gallery from 4 May to 28 July 2024, as a part of its national tour to regional and metropolitan centres in Queensland, New South Wales, South Australia, Tasmania and Victoria.

Join us for the Official Opening of ZOONOSES on Friday 3 May 2024, 6.00pm at Hurstville Museum & Gallery. RSVP online at georgesriver.nsw.gov.au/HMG

“Every single person involved has been absolutely phenomenal. I'm extending extra special thanks to the AFL community of St George and Georges River Council contributors like Luke from the Georges River Council Premium Facilities team who helped make this happen.” - Elder

Ed Sheeran music video directed in the heart of Georges River

Georges River-raised artist and filmmaker Chris Elder, known professionally as Elder, had the honour of directing a music video for global superstar and singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran.

In November last year, Elder, 36, who grew up in Carss Park and attended school at Blakehurst Primary School won the opportunity after entering an international competition to produce a music video for Sheeran’s single, Amazing.

Majority of the filming occurred across locations in Georges River, with Elder also weaving personal history and his place of birth into the project. Some familiar scenes

in the video include Jubilee Stadium, Olds Park and Carss Park. All interior scenes were shot in Elder’s childhood home on Bunyala Street in Carss Park, where his parents still reside. His personal history and link to the Georges River area adds a nostalgic and authentic feeling to the video.

Claydon Reserve Bus Shelter public art project - Joel Cameron

Georges River Council received funding through the NSW Government’s Graffiti Management Grant (Western Sydney) program which has led to two colourful public art projects. Public art has the ability to contribute to the vibrancy of the local area’s public spaces for the enjoyment of residents and visitors and has been proven to deter graffiti.

Joel Cameron is a Sydney-based artist who completed a mural on a bus shelter located at Claydon Reserve, Ramsgate Road. This was a competitive project as 33 submissions were received with Joel’s design being selected as the winning concept.

The Claydon Reserve Bus Shelter public art project aims to improve the amenity of the site, reduce the incidence of graffiti, and increase the public art offering within the local area.

Joel’s design features native flora and fauna such as a Bottle Brush, Banksia, Wattle, Kookaburra, Lorikeet, and a Glossy Black Cockatoo. The playful use of birds and sports equipment reflects on the sports that are primarily played in Claydon Reserve such as football, cricket, and netball, and highlights the importance of being active, having fun, and looking after our communities’ beautiful natural spaces.

Joel has over 15 years’ experience and has exhibited domestically and internationally as well as leading many community-based art workshops. Joel is inspired by exploring relationships between people, place, and environment. A major motivation for him is enriching and celebrating communities through art.

Thanks to funding from the NSW Government and Georges River Council's joint effort under the Greater Cities Sport Facility Fund, this project has given the community a delightful space to stretch their legs and soak up the sun.

At the new and improved Olds Park Recreational and Sporting hardscape, you’ll find a street-style skate park, shady nooks for a little rest and recreation, and not one, not two, but three netball courts.

Additionally, there are repair stations for cyclists and skateboarders to keep their wheels spinning smoothly!

Aligning with the 2020 Master Plan for the site, Council recognises the importance of inclusivity, making sure everyone, regardless of their fitness level or ability, could join in the fun. The precinct is a place everyone can play safely, creating a welcoming space where locals can get active and enjoy some quality time outdoors.

To kick off the grand opening, a Skating Competition, hosted by Skateology skate school, added a touch of excitement to the

day, giving residents a chance to showcase their skills and get the party started.

With the Olds Park Recreational and Sporting Hardscape precinct now open, residents have a fantastic new spot to hang out, have some fun, and make memories.

Grab your gear, round up your friends, and head on over for some good old-fashioned outdoor fun!

Knucker at Olds Park - Dillon MacEwan

Georges River Council aspires for public art to be an everyday experience, and frequently incorporates art into new parks and facilities as a way of telling local stories and building sense of place and community identity.

The most recent addition to Council’s public art collection is a dragon sculpture titled Knucker which was unveiled at the site of the newly constructed skatepark and netball court precinct at Olds Park, Penshurst.

Knucker was designed and created by Dillon MacEwan. He is a master robotics and mechatronics engineer, who specialises in large-scale installation, kinetic sculpture, pyrotechnics, and special effects for the film industry. He has worked with and created works for the legendary Mutoid Waste Company, Arcadia, Walking with Dinosaurs, Sculpture by the Sea, Stalker Theatre Co., and most recently for Mad Max: Furiosa. His works have been described as being the product of creative and construction genius.

Dillon’s skills are demonstrated in his latest work, which incorporates parts of skateboards and bicycles, as well as the metal from the original 1970s skate ramps from the skate park. The sculpture references the history of the park while also linking in with the skateboards and bikes that riders will be using today.

The urban landscape of the precinct as well as the dragon sculpture was inspired by the logo of Georges River Council. The dragon has several meanings as it represents both the future and past of the area, it references the legend of Saint George, as well as being a Chinese cultural symbol that represents prosperity, good luck and a rain deity that fosters harmony. The dragon symbolism is referenced throughout the park with the sculpture as well as spines features dotted throughout the park.

Dillon has said that “Knucker is for the grommets, the geezers, the rippers, and the thrashers; for those who have gone before, and those that left too soon”.
