As newly elected Mayor, I’d like to welcome you to the Summer edition of our Community Magazine! It’s hard to believe we’re already at the end of the year, but as the weather heats up, so will our muchloved Summer Events program. Our events team has been working tirelessly to arrange a brilliant line up of events including Magic of Christmas and Lunar New Year for our whole community to enjoy.
In what is an exciting chapter for Council, six new Councillors were elected following the NSW Local Government Elections which were held on Saturday 14 September 2024. I look forward to working closely with the new team to bring a positive impact to the community. I’d also like to thank the outgoing Councillors for their service to our community.
Battle of the Bridges made its return for its second year! Hosted by Georges River and Sutherland Shire Councils with 3Bridges Youth, it showcased some of the spectacular music talent of our local area. While Sutherland Shire Council were the victors this year, the bands representing Georges River Council really did do us proud.
October saw the launch of a new campaign to tackle the growing issue of illegal dumping, targeting hotspot areas across Georges River. I encourage residents to report incidents of illegal dumping through Council’s online request form and together we can keep Georges River beautiful.
We also saw the opening of Hurstville Museum & Gallery’s exhibition, Makers & Manufacturers. Running until 11 May 2025, the exhibition sheds light on the local social, economic and business history of our region.
We were lucky enough to have an opportunity to work with Sydney Weekender to showcase some gems in our local area! Keep an eye out for the program where you’ll spot some familiar locations.
The community favourite Magic of Christmas is making its return on Saturday 7 December at Carss Bush Park. Head on down with the kids and a picnic blanket. I look forward to seeing you there!
The Year of the Snake will be celebrated at our upcoming Lunar New Year Festival, now locked in for Saturday 1 February 2025. In what is Sydney Metro’s biggest Council-led Lunar New Year celebration, you won’t want to miss out on the celebrations.
With the summer school holidays fast approaching, I encourage you to visit Council’s What’s On page to find out more about the activities and programs happening at our libraries, Hurstville Entertainment Centre and Hurstville Museum & Gallery.
Have a lovely and safe Summer, and I hope to rub shoulders with you at the next community event.

Culture in Colour Art Competition: Diwali/Deepavali
In November, Georges River Council extended warm wishes to everyone celebrating Diwali/Deepavali this year. Also known as the "Festival of Lights," Diwali is a time to rejoice in the victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and good over evil. It’s a cherished festival that brings families and friends together to light diyas (lamps), share delicious sweets, and enjoy colourful fireworks.
As part of our Diwali celebrations, Council announced the winner of our Culture in Colour Competition. Congratulations to Ria, a year three student from Sans Souci Public School. Ria shared a beautiful reflection on why Diwali/Deepavali is special to her, saying, "My dad is Indian, and it’s fun to celebrate!". Her joyful artwork captured the spirit of the festival, showcasing the vibrant colours and traditions that make Diwali such a meaningful celebration.
Georges River Council takes action against Illegal Dumping
Georges River Council is committed to maintaining a clean, safe, and healthy environment for all residents. As part of this ongoing effort, the Council is stepping up its actions to crack down on illegal dumping across the local government area.
Illegal dumping is a growing concern that not only damages the local environment but also creates an eyesore in our beautiful neighbourhoods. Whether it's unwanted furniture, household waste, or construction materials, illegal dumping poses a serious threat to both our surroundings and our community wellbeing.
To address this, Council is targeting hotspot areas across the region and encourages residents to report any illegal dumping they may witness.
The campaign also encourages waste disposal through education and accessible services. The Council’s free bulky waste collection service is available to all residents, ensuring that large or unwanted items can be disposed of responsibly and legally.
Illegal dumping is not only unacceptable but avoidable. Residents are encouraged to report any instances of illegal dumping they witness to Council through the online reporting system or by calling Customer Service.
By working together, we can help keep the Georges River area clean, safe, and free from the impact of illegal dumping. Council thanks the community for its ongoing cooperation and support in maintaining the local environment.

Battle of the Bridges
The second Battle of the Bridges came back with a bang, living up to the hype and then some.
Hosted by Georges River and Sutherland Shire Councils, in partnership with 3Bridges Youth, this year’s showdown turned the spotlight on the raw talent emerging from Sydney South’s music scene.
Six acts stepped up—three representing each council. These young musicians didn’t just bring their talent, they brought an energy that electrified the crowd and demonstrated why these events are so vital to the local music scene.
Representing Georges River were TBD, Overboard, and Zephyr, while Jonathon Eid, Scub Bucket, and Beanstalk carried the Sutherland Shire banner. Every act brought something different to the table, whether it was gutsy vocals, innovative sounds, or simply owning the stage.
As the competition ended, it was Sutherland Shire Council who took home the title, with their talented young musicians delivering an unforgettable performance that wowed the judges and audience alike.
If this year’s Battle of the Bridges was any indication, Sydney South’s music scene is just getting started, and next year’s competition can’t come soon enough.

Business Spotlight
Georges River Council is committed to being future-focused and ambitious, continuously delivering initiatives that make businesses in our region more accessible, sustainable, and innovative. Between 2020 and 2023, Georges River saw an overall business growth of 5.2%, largely driven by a surge in small businesses.
Small local businesses are pillars of the Georges River community, creating jobs, fostering a sense of belonging, and contributing to the unique character of our neighbourhoods through local employment, personalised services, and active community engagement.
Recognising the power of partnerships, Georges River Council collaborates with key organisations like Business Chamber South, Spark Festival, Realise Business, and Service NSW Business Bureau. These partnerships expand Council’s resources and networks, allowing for a broader range of support for local businesses.
Throughout the year, Council has hosted a series of information sessions aimed at helping local businesses navigate Council processes, covering topics from development applications and event hosting to WHS requirements.
“We’re looking forward to opening the lines of communication with our local business community. We believe that by working together, we can create a supportive environment that encourages growth and innovation in the Georges River area,” said Council General Manager David Tuxford. Council’s Economic Development Team, in partnership with Service NSW, conducted business walks in Hurstville and Mortdale to promote the Business Bureau and Business Concierge Service. These programs
provide businesses with 1:1 tailored advice, resources, and grants to support growth at every stage.
Local events have become essential touchpoints for small business owners and supporters, offering affordable opportunities to network, learn, and gain insights from industry experts. As the startup landscape evolves, these gatherings provide a space where entrepreneurs can connect, exchange ideas, and explore industry trends with other leaders and innovators. Engaging in these discussions often sparks fresh perspectives that both seasoned and aspiring entrepreneurs can apply within their own businesses.
In June 2024, Spark Sydney South brought together the region’s innovators, entrepreneurs, and SMEs at Netstrata
Jubilee Stadium. This event, organised by Spark Festival, Georges River Council, St George Business Chamber, and ANSTO, was a celebration of entrepreneurship in South Sydney.
More recently, Council partnered with Business Chamber South and Spark Sydney South to host AI & Robotics: The Future of Business is Here, featuring keynote speaker Adrian Tyson, founder of Neuranext. An AI pioneer, Adrian shared his expertise on how AI and robotics can fuel innovation in small businesses.
“By bringing together industry experts, entrepreneurs, and businesses of all sizes, these events create a dynamic environment where knowledge is shared, partnerships are formed, and innovation is sparked. The success of events like the AI & Robotics presentation highlights the power of such initiatives in driving innovation and strengthening the local business community,” said Tony Baddour from Business Chamber South.
Georges River Council’s Economic Leadership Group, made up of local business and industry representatives, regularly meets with Council to provide strategic advice on economic opportunities and challenges. We are now seeking new members for 2025. This group values diversity and strong connections with industry bodies, small businesses, major employers, and stakeholders, offering perspectives on the nighttime economy, tourism, manufacturing, creative industries, innovation, and precinct development.

How have you positively impacted your community?
Through my passion for music, dance and drama, I’ve been able to connect with my community in meaningful ways. Performing at local events, community centres, and charity gatherings, I’ve used my voice and songs to bring people together. My goal has always been to uplift and inspire those around me, especially younger kids who might be starting out or looking for their own path in music.
I’ve also represented my schools in singing and dancing competitions, obtained overseas scholarships, and been honoured with several Commonwealth Parliamentarian’s Merit Awards. Each of these experiences has strengthened my commitment to sharing my love for music and bringing positive energy to our community. Music has a unique way of breaking down barriers and creating a shared experience, and I’m grateful to contribute to that in my own way within our community.
What do you love about Georges River LGA?
I was born and raised in Georges River, and I love how much our area has to offer. We have great schools, hospitals, and parks, along with beautiful bushwalks to explore and an amazing river right at our doorstep.
I also look forward to the community events that Georges River Council organisesthere’s always something happening within our LGA. It’s wonderful to see how Council is consistently upgrading our parks and facilities to make our community an even better place.
Do you have any tips or advice to share with the community?
My advice would be to find something you’re truly passionate about and pursue it with everything you have. Whether it’s music, sports, art, or something else, having a passion can really give you direction and a sense of purpose. Also, be open to new opportunities, like school competitions or community events, because they can open doors you might never expect. Most importantly, believe in yourself and enjoy the journey!
What are you working on now and what's coming up for you?
Right now, I’m dedicating a lot of time to my songwriting. Over the past year, I’ve been recording and producing my own original music, and I hope to release my original songs soon. I’m also looking forward to potential collaborations with other artists and have a few gigs lined up. In 2025, I aim to study music in the USA, which I’m really excited about!
Are you our next Community Champion? We’re on the hunt to feature our next community hero, someone who has positively impacted the Georges River community. If this sounds like you or someone you know, please complete the submission form online here.

Young artists shine in ‘Yellow’ Exhibition
In September, Hurstville Museum & Gallery proudly presented Yellow, a vibrant exhibition showcasing the creative talents of young artists from Art Wonderland Studio in Peakhurst.
The stellar display featured artwork from students aged 5 to 16, exploring the theme of yellow through a range of techniques and mediums.
Founded in 2016 by Sydney illustrator Heli Yang, Art Wonderland Studio was born from the vision to create a supportive environment for young artists to nurture, explore and develop their creative skills. Today, the studio proudly teaches over 200 students, fostering an environment where artistic expression is encouraged and celebrated.
The Yellow exhibition brought together a diverse collection of pieces, each reflecting the students' personal interpretations of the colour yellow. The students used yellow as a unifying theme, creating a cohesive and visually engaging experience for visitors. The exhibition also highlighted the variety of techniques employed by these budding artists, showcasing their growing confidence and skill.
Exhibitions like Yellow are an important way to not only celebrate young talent but also help students build confidence and connect with the broader community. The opportunity to have their work displayed in a public gallery is a significant milestone for these young artists and a testament to their hard work and creativity.
A heartfelt congratulations goes to all the students who had the chance to showcase their beautiful work. Their passion and imagination were on full display, and the exhibition was a true celebration of the next generation of artists in our community!

These initiatives focused on building a greater sense of community, improving mental health awareness, and offering practical tools for managing stress and promoting emotional wellbeing.
In addition, the Clive James Library, Kogarah created a dedicated Wellness Zone, offering a peaceful space for residents to unwind, reflect, and practice mindfulness. This tranquil area became a welcoming retreat for individuals seeking respite from the busy pace of everyday life.
Throughout the month, Georges River Libraries also provided a self-care bingo card, filled with helpful prompts for practicing mindful activities such as journaling, breathing exercises, and other forms of relaxation. Grey-headed Flying-fox
The Grey-headed Flying-fox (Pteropus poliocephalus) are large fruit bats that are listed as a vulnerable species due to habitat loss and impacts from heat waves associated with climate change.
Despite the Grey-headed Flying-fox having a reputation for being loud and messy, they play a crucial role in the local ecosystem, pollinating a variety of flowering plants, dispersing seeds, controlling insect populations, and contributing to biodiversity in the local government area. This is why Council developed the Oatley Flying-Fox Management Plan in 2021 to protect the Flying-fox population and assist with the ongoing management of the colony located in Oatley.
Over the summer period, walking tracks at Myles Dunphy Reserve may be temporarily closed on days of extreme heat (around 40 degrees Celsius) to reduce stress to the Greyheaded Flying-fox colony. During these periods, signage will be installed on site and notification of the track closure will occur on Council’s website.
If you see any sick or injured flying-foxes in the area, please call WIRES on 1300 094 737.
To learn more about this fascinating species, visit Council’s website.

Oatley Junior Rugby Union’s contribution to the community
Congratulations to Oatley Rugby Club who recently had the honour of hosting the U10 State Development Carnival on behalf of NSW Junior Rugby Union.
The Carnival saw teams descend on Riverwood from all over NSW for their first experience of representative Rugby. The carnival was a huge success with over 2000 players, coaches, managers and spectators attending over the weekend.
Oatley Club President Ana Moala said, “It was encouraging to see so many young boys and girls showcasing their passion for Rugby, having our community come together and pitch in to make the carnival such a success.”
Vice President Suzie Tohme coordinated the event along with the help of committee and community members.
“The weekend was a huge success as it put Riverwood on the map as a location for Rugby Union.
“We are thankful to Council for their approval and flexibility which allowed us to overcome weather challenges we faced at the time and were able to showcase the location and what was on offer both within the park and within our surroundings.
“Club Rivers were our major sponsor but without Something Nice Foods, Global Quality Foods and other local suppliers our success in catering for this event would not have been possible in raising funds for our Rugby Community.
“Oatley is proud to be the largest club in the district and south of Sydney, a testament to our commitment to fostering growth and support within the local rugby community.”
