Phi Mu Fraternity raises $700 for Children’s Miracle Network By KAYLEE DEE LONG

The organization funds over 170 member hospitals which provide nearly 32 million treatments per year. The closest benefactors of CMNH is Kentucky Children’s Hospital in Lexington, Ky. The chapter of Phi Mu at Georgetown, as well as the Phi Mu chapters at the University of Kentucky and Transylvania University, all work with this hospital directly, making visits to the children, raising funds through events and bringing gifts to the children. One of the favorites of the Phi Mu ladies here at GC is the annual canvas-painting social in which all ladies on campus are invited to paint canvases together in the Phi Mu house which are then taken to the Kentucky Children’s Hospital in order to help brighten up their hospital rooms. This year’s canvas-painting THE GEORGETONIAN / HAILEY BOWMAN event will be held The ladies of Phi Mu stand together with on Oct. 24 from 7 the men of Lambda Chi Alpha, the winp. m. to 9 p. m.. in ners of the volleyball tournament the Phi Mu house. Staff Writer Phi Mu hosted “Volley For The Kids” on Friday, Oct. 4. This was a philanthropic volleyball tournament, and the funds were donated to Phi Mu’s Philanthropy, Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals (CMNH). The winner of the tournament won $100 to be donated to the charity of their choice. Children’s Miracle Network is a non-profit organization in North America that raises awareness for various children’s illnesses and financially supports children’s hospitals and medical research.

Both canvases and paint will be provided along with refreshments. The philanthropy chair of Phi Mu, Hailey Bowman, said, “Phi Mu was able to bring so much awareness to CMNH. It was a night full of laughs, music and memories. Phi Mu would like to thank everyone who showed out and supported.” The event was hosted at the sand pit on campus, and there were several fun volleyball games, tasty smores, hot coffee and lots of comradery. The teams included Lamb #1, Lamb #2, Sigma Kappa, Phi Mu #1, Phi Mu #2 and Kappa Delta. The overall winner was Lamb #2. In an interview after the championship game, John Lowe of the winning team said, “We just really wanted to get out here and just have a good time. We really came out here and showed out for this one.” Ultimately, the hit event was #FTK (for the kids) and Over $700 has been raised, though more donations are expected from local businesses.

White House unclear on Ukraine situation

By ROBERT BIRD

Staff Writer On Sunday, President Trump’s acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney attempted to walk back several comments he had made regarding the allegations that the Trump White House used around $400 million to send to the Ukrainian government to investigate the 2020 presidential election. Mulvaney made these comments this past Thursday, and has since been attempting to rescind these comments, saying that the media had reconstructed his words and misconstrued his ideas. In a televised press conference on Thursday, Mulvaney spoke and said that Ukraine would be launching an investigation that could possibly politically benefit Trump, and in turn defense funding would be frozen if this demand was followed through. Mulvaney later told reporters that Congress had already appropriated military aid to Ukraine and that it is being used by Trump as leverage for Kyiv to investigate 2020 presidential candidate Joe Biden. Mulvaney spoke with Chris Wallace on Fox News Sunday, where he vehemently denied the remarks made during the press conference that aired on TV just days before. Mulvaney told

Wallace, “That’s not what I said. That’s what people said that I said. Can I see how people took that the wrong way? Absolutely. But I never said there was a quid pro quo, because there isn’t. Did he also mention to me in the past the corruption related to the DNC server? Absolutely. No question about that. But that’s it, and that’s why we held up the money. We do that all the time with foreign policy.” After Mulvaney made these statements, denouncement was felt from both sides of the aisle almost immediately. Adam Schiff, who is the Democratic House Intelligence Committee Chairman, said that, “Things have gone from very, very bad to much, much worse.” Several Republicans have also given condemnation toward Mulvaney’s shocking remarks, including Senator Lisa Murkowski from Alaska, who stated, “You don’t hold up foreign aid that we had previously appropriated for a political initiative, period.” Furthermore, Trump’s personal attorney, Mulvaney himself, and even the Justice Department have since tried to clean up the mess caused by his statements. Mulvaney later said on Sunday that he never used the exact words “quid pro quo,” and also put forth that the

“rapid fire” and “back and forth” White House press conference briefings added to the confusion of what he was attempting to convey in his words and remarks. He said that “there was never any connection between the flow of money and the server.” Mulvaney’s comments have Source:Flickr caused such a stir White House Chief of Staff, Mick Mulvaney, giving a press due to this argu- conference regarding the Ukraine situation ably being the central topic of the Trump impeach- Did I have the perfect press conference? ment inquiry and debate. This is a reflection of the massive amount of progress made for female equality in the space program, especially since women were not allowed into the astronaut program until 1978. GC Cross Country team travels to Hilton Head, SC

By CHARITY STOLTZ Staff Writer

This past weekend on Saturday, Oct. 19, the Georgetown College Cross Country team went head to head with hurricane Nestor in Hilton Head, South Carolina. They overcame the weather and set new personal bests and high team scores. Though Nestor did not relent its downpour on the teams present at the Sand Shark Invitational, many used these less than ideal conditions to push themselves. Both the men and women’s teams placed in the Top 10 finishes with both teams finishing 8th out of 19 schools. On the women’s side, there were many runners achieved personal records. Freshman Anna Wells led the female team with a finishing time of 19 minutes 38 seconds placing 23rd out of 150 racers. Anna’s time ranks her as the 11th fastest female in Georgetown College history. Manny Stovik, Tori Hafner, Katerina Reese and Jessica Smith also set new per-

sonal bests while many other females came within seconds of doing so. The men’s team did not have any personal records set, but the scoring runners ran in a tight pack having the best split time in six years. This is good for the male Cross Country team who have come out stronger than ever this season with a young and fresh team who are out to move Georgetown College up on the finishing list. The hard work of all runners was well rewarded with an afternoon to relax on the beach and wander the streets and local stores. Junior Sarah Wiseman said, “It was a great time regardless of tropical storm Nestor.” Runner Courtney Lee bought a very relevant shirt that said, “A bad day at the beach is better than a good day at work.” Next weekend the team will be at Asbury University. Head Coach Luke Garnett is hoping that the performances this weekend will set the stage for a better performance at conference.

Georgetown College Tigers overcome Bethel University Wildcats in Tennessee By DYLAN PRUITT S&R Editor

Despite suffering a loss at the Homecoming game on Oct. 12, the Georgetown College football team scored a victory over Bethel University in an away game last Saturday, with a final score of 28-7. The Tigers travelled to McKenzie, Tenn. to face off against the Bethel Wildcats. For those superstitious sports fans, the only times Georgetown has been defeated by Bethel is at home games, and have always won against the Wildcats at away games. The Tigers and Wildcats have been competing in football since 1995 (gcathletics.com). Georgetown led from the beginning, thanks mostly to

the teamwork of Zach Dampier and JJ Ogbogu. The pair of Dampier and Ogbogu scored two touchdown passes within the first nine minutes, and this helped secure Georgetown’s place on the scoreboard. Such an impressive start from the Tigers almost guaranteed a victory and no chance for a comeback from Bethel. The first quarter saw offense from both sides, however, as Bethel pushed desperately to score. Sophomore Christian Arrambide of Bethel executed a 69-yard drive that helped cut the lead in half, and gave the Wildcats their only score for the day. From the first quarter on, both teams attempted to focus

on a defensive strategy, something that epitomized both the second and third quarters. The third successful play from the Tigers came in the second quarter, when Santana Jones intercepted a pass and made a 95-yard dash to bring the score to 21-7 by halftime. For Georgetown’s final score, Dampier and Ogbogu teamed up again with a mere three minutes left. The two executed a pass play covering 14-yards for the final score, again solidifying themselves as key players in the game. After the Homecoming loss, this was a much-needed win for GC football. Though the game far from Georgetown’s campus, the Tiger Pride remains strong here at GC.

Packers’ wins dominate Raiders

By ROBERT BIRD Staff Writer

During week seven of this NFL season, the Green Bay Packers continued their winning streak, beating the Oakland Raiders by a score of 42-24. The Packers climb to a record of 6-1 on the season behind a dominant performance by Aaron Rodgers, who had one of the best performances of his career on Sunday. Under new Head Coach Matt LaFleur, the Packers have shocked many in the NFL, including both analysts and fans alike. After a disappointing 2018 season, that was marred by injuries to Aaron Rodgers and the firing of coach Mike McCarthy, many Packers fans were left grasping for straws as to what to expect with the new season. Adding on to that was the hiring of LaFleur, who had never previously been the head coach of a NFL team and who is himself only five years older than Aaron Rodgers. Furthermore, several were questioning the leadership abilities of Rodgers and if his approach to the game could create a winning atmosphere in Green Bay. So far this season, these critics of the Packers have been silenced as the team has continued to dominate their

opponents, improving so far to 6-1. Rodgers in particular had a great game yesterday against the Raiders, rolling in a total of five passing touchdowns and one rushing. Rodgers also accounted for a perfect passer rating of 158.3, which was surprisingly the first time in Rodgers’ career that he had accomplished that feat, considering he is a Super Bowl champion, Super Bowl MVP and two time NFL MVP. Rodgers passed touchdowns to five different receivers on Sunday including Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Jimmy Graham, Jake Kumerow, Aaron Jones and Jamaal Williams. Geronimo Allison would have also reeled in a touchdown, if not for stepping out of bounds at the five yard line after catching a pass from Rodgers. On the defensive side of the ball, the Packers defense was really eaten up for most of the game, but they did produce three goal line stands that kept the Raiders from inching closer in the box score. The most notable statistic from the game came from defensive end Blake Martinez, who tallied 16 tackles total. The Packers will look to build on their winning streak, facing the Kansas City Chiefs next Sunday night.

Weekly wrestling history: the Undertaker’s undefeated streak

By DYLAN PRUITT S&R Editor

After only four months as a performer for the World Wrestling Federation, Mark Calaway, known to wrestling fans as the Undertaker, took on wrestling legend Jimmy Snuka at WrestleMania VII. No one at the time knew it would become the beginning of the one of the most illustrious career accomplishments wrestling has ever seen. The Undertaker is a name that wrestling fans know like the back of their hands, akin to Hulk Hogan, Shawn Michaels, the Ultimate Warrior or John Cena. He is a performer known for a plethora of accomplishments, including his seven World Heavyweight and WWE Championship reigns. Undertaker is best known, however, for his undefeated streak at WrestleMania. For decades, it has played such a prominent role in wrestling history that it even featured as one of the main playmodes in one of WWE’s recent videogames. The mode allows players to fight either as an opponent against “The Deadman” or as the Undertaker himself to break or defend the streak, respectively. Although the streak came to define the Undertaker, and quite possibly wrestling itself, the match that started it all was not intended to be so important. Undertaker’s WrestleMania VII match against Jimmy Snuka was nothing more than a slot-filler, and

only had the goal of establishing Undertaker as a new and upcoming star in the business. Years later, the streak still had not even become a talking point in the wrestling circles. It was merely coincidence that by WrestleMania XVI he had gone 8-0 at “The Grandest Stage of Them All.” At Undertaker’s next WrestleMania match against Triple H, he was actually scheduled to lose. Triple H was set to defeat Undertaker and win the match, but backstage drama involving his long-time friend Shawn Michaels led to him being booked to lose as punishment. For those who read last week’s wrestling history, you’ll recall that Triple H screwed himself over via backstage shenanigans before. After this coincidental booking, people in the crowd and backstage began to notice that Undertaker had somehow built up a 9-0 streak that had gone unmentioned. At the next ‘Mania, Undertaker defeated Ric Flair and then held up his hands to motion the number ten, signifying his now 10-0 streak at the big show. The streak would still never be brought up in a storyline, though, until WrestleMania XXI. It was in the build-up to this show that Randy Orton, a young superstar with the gimmick of being a “Legend Killer,” continously announced that he would be the first to defeat Undertaker at WrestleMania. Despite this hype surrounding Orton and his sky-

rocketing career, Undertaker stood tall by the end of the match, bringing him to 13-0. Many more matches followed, all centering on a basic formula that had formed based on the Undertaker’s streak. Each year, as it got closer to WrestleMania time, a new superstar would step up and challenge the Undertaker. He would claim that although no one else had been able to do it, he would be the one to defeat the streak for good. Each year one would step up, and each year one would fall. Perhaps the most memorable challenge came in the form of Shawn Michaels, who, after already failing to break the streak once at WrestleMania XXV, put his career on the line for another chance. At WrestleMania XXVI, Michaels and the Undertaker went head-to-head once more, with ‘Taker winning to become 18-0. Finally, at WrestleMania XXX, Brock Lesnar stepped up as the next challenger for the Undertaker. Despite the legend’s old age and decreasing appearances in WWE programming, few saw Lesnar as a real threat to the streak due to storyline purposes. Regardless of personal opinions about what should have happened, the match between Lesnar and Undertaker ended with Lesnar standing tall. The legendary phenomena that sparked some of the most well-known stories in WWE, the undefeated streak of the Undertaker, ended at 21-1.

Horror movie reboots are only getting better By ASHLYN REED Staff Writer At times, horror movie reboots can be considered annoying and the idea of remaking everything can seem redundant. However, I think everyone should look on the bright side: horror movie reboots can sometimes improve the franchise. While all of that is a matter of opinion, I would like to note some of the best changes made when it comes to reboots. “IT Chapter[s] 1 and 2” are the most notable. With graphics getting better and budgets getting bigger, we are met with more scares and better acting. I don’t mean the newer franchises that are growing and spreading out into other spinoffs like “The Conjuring” turning into “The Nun” and “Anna-

belle.” I am talking about the originals like “Friday the 13th” and “Poltergeist.” While the originals are absolute classics, this new wave of reboots really makes the audience appreciate the work that went into them so many years ago. What makes them so much fun to watch is the fact that you expect the scares, but are surprised by the new stories and writing. I could break them down into their bits and pieces, how much grittier and unsettling these movies are now; rather than talk about the jump scares and gore, I’ll talk about how the writing is most important. When someone thinks of “Candyman,” they are thinking of saying his name 5 times, Chicago, the hook hand, the horrifying twist at the end and the

Flickr.com

“Halloween” movie poster

darn bees. With a reboot of “Candyman” coming up in the near future (thank goodness for Jordan Peele), I

am wholeheartedly expecting to see all those things. If these aspects aren’t in the movie, then what is the point of the reboot? With reboots, however, the writers are able to see the classics, acknowledge them and get the most crucial details. In other words, they are able to correct what was done wrong the first time around. As a horror movie purist, I love watching the remakes to pick them apart, but some actually propel the story forward. This fall, you can watch many reboots. The best ones, in my opinion: “IT” (1990, 2017/2019), “Halloween” (1978, 2007), “Child’s Play” (1988, 2019), and “Friday the 13th” (1980, 2009, and maybe add in “Jason Takes Manhattan” from 1989).

These are the best horror movies on Netflix By TYLER EVANS Staff Writer It is that time of the year and with Halloween coming right around the corner you may be asking yourself “What can I do to get into the spirit of Halloween?” Well as always there are a wide array of movies and TV shows that are tailor made for this situation, and most of them can be found on Netflix. A majority of the movies that are on Netflix are well known and very cinematic such as the “Scream” franchise, “The Conjuring” franchise and any Stephen King horror movie. There are also many movies that are not very well known such as “Hush,” a movie

about a deaf writer who retreated into the woods to live a solitary life and must now fight for her life in silence when a masked killer appears in her window. So obviously, slasher and haunted movies are a way to get into the spirit, but what about psychological movies? Movies that test your will and your stomach like “Would You Rather,” “The Golem” and “He Never Died,” a movie about a reclusive immortal who needs human flesh but tries to stay clean and now finds himself cast into society by a gang of thugs and his estranged daughter. But if you don’t have the patience to sit down and watch movies for hours on end, then maybe you would like to

Syria: A huge mistake By SANTINO MANISCALCHI Staff Writer The military incursion of Turkish armed forces in Kurdish held Syria has now commenced with Turkish fighters raining bombs on specified targets and ground troops sweeping up any opposition on the rear. Prior to this, the Turkish government proposed a boundary of where their forces will stop. The land captured would be a 30 km deep, 200-mile-long “safe zone” for Turkey. However, just because one says something doesn’t mean that they will follow it. The Kurdish groups that are in control of Northeastern Syria is the YPG and the PPK. Both are considered terrorist organizations by the Turkish government, who is determined to destroy both when given the opportunity. Turkey’s land forces will capture the proposed occupation of land with support of aerial bombardment, artillery strikes and precision-guided missiles. The Turkish military will most likely push beyond

the “safe zone” and capture any strategic positions that will allow them to conduct future operations like capturing the Kurds’ major cities Hassakeh or Raqqa. The Kurds will be on the defensive for they do not have the capability or resources to match against a regional powerhouse with modern weapons, tactics and technology. The question is what will the United States do? Currently, the U.S. has approximately 300-400 soldiers in Northeastern Syria mostly comprising of special forces and support units with military advisors for the Kurds. The Turkish government has shown that they will use military force to remove the Americans from Syria. Even though Turkey is a member of NATO and has American military bases in its country. The U.S. will most certainly move their troops away from the Turks’ invasion force. After that the Department of Defense has two choices to make. The first one is removing all their

units out of Syria which will leave the Kurds defenseless against the might of the Turkish war machine. An obvious response is the Kurds will look to other nations for assistance. The second is deploy more soldiers to Syria as a deterrent to the invading Turks. The Department of Defense needs to send enough to show that America will not back down to the aggressive actions of an ally but, not too many that it will give Turkey the excuse that America is going to use military action against them and will possibly attack our forces in response. Either way, a decision like this will affect the geopolitics of the Middle East for years to come. Personally, I believe the United States should place troops in Kurdish Syria. Since, submitting to the actions of the Turkish government makes America look weak and indecisive in an already complicated war theatre. America in the past has stood by their allies and must uphold their legacy. For if the Kurds fall then America will suffer.

Art: a good escape for college students By TYLER EVANS Staff Writer College can be a stressful time for many of us and a lot of the time we can see how it affects us personally. Usually we find ways to handle our stress, but other times we can find it difficult to express ourselves sometimes. For everyone who has a difficult time finding a stress relief that doesn’t result in physical harm to an individual or someone else, this article may be a good read for you to

get an idea or two. I didn’t have a way to relieve stress until this semester, I just let it build up inside of me until it came out in an unhealthy way like me exploding in a pent up rage or random bursts of sadness. I had finally had enough of feeling this way, and I decided to do something about it. I decided that maybe exercise would work for me, but it only resulted in me being out of breath and being too tired to care about anything, and I still felt the stress I had. So, obvi-

ously, the exercise route didn’t work for me. The next week during my history class a random thought popped into my head, “I should write some poetry to get rid of my stress” and right after that class that is exactly what I did. I sat down in my room with no one around put a pencil in my hand grabbed a notebook and started writing; one right after another I just wrote out four different poems. Within one hour I felt so much better. I never gave it a second thought before, but

for some reason poetry spoke to me and it has worked wonders. I have been hoping for something to take away the stress of this semester away and for me, that answer is poetry. Art in any form is a great release of stress, because all art is, is just a form of expression; art takes the stress you have and puts it on display for everyone to relate to or to empathize with. I know that everyone has a different way of expressing themselves, but I recommend

that you try expressing yourself in a form of art. Even if you are not really a big fan of generalized art like painting, drawing or sculpting, there are so many types of art that don’t involve crafting materials. Music is also a form of art that people use on a daily basis; singing, playing an instrument or just simply listening to music can relieve stress. The same goes for writing, poems, stories or even telling a creative story can help you out and it gets your story out and in the open.

into account. While I certainly am comfortable in my own body, I’m certain there are men who see these mannequins and feel bad about themselves or feel like they have to change something about themselves in order to be desirable in society. It’s not just Target mannequins that display unrealistic “ideal” body standards; advertisements, movies, television and social media all promote unrealistic goals that men should be in order to be “perfect” standards for men. The reason these “ideal” and “perfect” bodies are promoted is to sell products. Women buy the products they’re selling because there’s an attractive model associated with the product, and men buy these products because they want to

be more like the model in the advertisements. In movies and television, these “ideal” men are the stars of the screen. They will draw the biggest crowds, which makes more money for the movie companies and thus more money for the stars themselves, only continuing the cycle. Women are used in the same way to make a profit. The objectification of women is largely being addressed after rising criticism in the past decade. More accurate portrayals of women; their bodies, their feelings and their wants are now in the forefront of most depictions of women in the media. However, the portrayals of men haven’t changed at all. The outcry on social media every single time a woman is portrayed inaccurately or

unrealistically is mute when men are portrayed just as inaccurately and unrealistically. Personally, I’m happy I’m not the same as the male mannequin at Target. I’m glad I actually have a face, and while it might not be the “ideal” one, it serves its function (besides the fact that I have to wear glasses to see, the Target Mannequin has me beat on that aspect). I’m glad I don’t have the same sickly and pale skin tone as him, and speaking of that, let’s have mannequins in all skin tones, just like us humans are, and not some vampiric white. Plus, I’m a real living human, which the mannequin will never be. On the flipside, the more realistic these mannequins become, the more terrifying they will be. Once you give these mannequins realistic

bodies and skin tones, it’s a slippery slope that could lead to them having realistic faces and who knows what else. Mannequins creep me out enough already, and making them more real-looking is only going to make things worse. Creepy mannequins aside, the portrayal of men in media is unrealistic and harmful to men. If setting unrealistic standards for women is unhealthy and offensive, doing the same to men should be just as repulsive. They are just mannequins, but what they represent says a lot about our society and the consumerist society we live in. These should accurately display the types of people who are going to buy the products, not just what the so-called “ideal” male body is.

Make male mannequins realistic, too

By COOPER ADKINS Opinion Editor

The media’s portrayal of women’s bodies sets unrealistic standards for women all around the globe. However, one thing rarely, if ever, discussed is how the media portrays men. Last weekend, I went to Target and noticed something about the mannequins that really stood out to me. The female mannequins all had realistic body types, from smaller to larger. But the male mannequins only had one size: small and sort of muscular. The female mannequins are in response to outcry by women about how unrealistic the “one-size” mannequins are, but Target and many other places don’t take men’s feelings towards the mannequins
