the Islamic State/ISIS, Syria and the other challenges today. He asked many rhetorical questions that reflected what he felt Christians should be doing, such as, “Where are our modern–day Abraham’s bargaining for souls of Sodom and Gomorrah?” and “Are we giving those who are captured [in lives full of hatred and without knowledge of God’s love] a choice?” He says Christians need to go out into the world and tell people what the “response of love” is. He emphasized that Christians are supposed to love their neighbors as they love themselves. The hardest task seems to be going out to engage with the world as missionaries, instead of staying at home talking to other Christians about problems, but he says that Christians need to remember that the hardest thing is really sending people out into the “wolves” until change is made. According to Dr. Ripken, Christians are sent out as “sheep among the wolves,” which is a biblical reference because God “is always a sending God.”

May Primary Elections are fast approaching By ALEX CAUDILL Staff Writer Barely three months out of the 2014 election cycle, Kentuckians are preparing to head to the ballot box again— this time to elect State Constitutional Officers. Kentucky is one of only three states, along with Louisiana and Mississippi, to hold statewide elections this year. The May Primary election will be held on Tuesday, May 19. At this time, registered Republicans and Democrats will head to the ballot box to select their nominees for the offices of Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, Secretary of State, Auditor of Public Accounts, Treasurer and Agriculture Commissioner. Though many of these races only have one candidate for each party, some have several high profile contenders. After the filing deadline to run for statewide office passed on Jan. 27, only one high profile Democratic candidate

had filed to run for Governor: Jack Conway. Conway has served as Attorney General for the Commonwealth since his election in 2007. He unsuccessfully ran to be Kentucky’s United States Senator in 2010, losing to Republican Rand Paul. Many other notable Democrats, such as State Auditor Adam Edelen and Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes, were rumored to be potential candidates for Governor but ultimately decided against it. Both have decided to seek reelection to their current offices. Attorney General Conway chose State House of Representatives Democratic Caucus Chairwoman Sannie Overly of Paris, Ky. to be his running mate as Lieutenant Governor. A little known engineer of Lexington, Ky., Geoffrey Young has also filed to be the Democratic nominee for Governor. Young sought the Democratic nomination for the U.S. House of Representatives in Kentucky’s sixth Congressional District last year but lost

by 20 percent to Elisabeth Jensen (elect. ky.gov). This is the first time in many years that only one high profile Democrat has run for the office of Governor in Kentucky. Kentucky Republicans, on the other hand, have a historically crowded primary for the offices of Governor and Lieutenant Governor. In recent memory, Republicans in Kentucky have had to work extremely hard to find even one notable candidate. This year former Kentucky Supreme Court Justice Will T. Scott is running for Governor with Rodney Coffey as his running mate. Agriculture Commissioner James Comer and State Senator Chris McDaniel have also formed a ticket. Former Louisville Metro Councilman Hal Heiner joined with former Lexington Metro Councilwoman K.C. Crosbie to form a slate. The last entry into the crowded field was Matt Bevin, who unsuccessfully ran against Senator Mitch McConnell last year, along with Jenean Hampton who is the first black

Bevin, Comer and Heiner are all within striking distance of each other in recent polls and all stay extremely competitive with Conway in hypothetical general election polling (www.realclearpolitics.com). In short, the next few months have the potential to be another exciting election season as candidates jockey to get the votes of their party faithfuls.

Cholesterol is no longer a big concern

By ANDREA BELLEW News Editor

The Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee is in the process of writing their report on their dietary health discoveries; this report will include their decision to take out the warning against the consumption of high cholesterol foods. The Washington Post reports that the committee’s discovery that cholesterol is not a nutrient to worry about anymore goes against the committee’s discoveries five years ago, which is the last time it assembled. For the past 40 years the committee has been saying high cholesterol consumption is a national health concern.

The committee is not withdrawing cautions about large amounts of “bad” cholesterol, which are connected to heart disease (washingtonpost.com). Furthermore, people with particular health problems, like diabetes, should still continue to avoid high cholesterol consumption. This report provides the scientific basis of important “Dietary Guidelines” (washingtonpost.com). The Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of Agriculture are due to put these guidelines out later this year. Experts say that Dietary Guidelines can differ from the report, but alterations are not typical. The Dietary Guidelines help outline what school lunches should consist of,

influences how food producers market their products, and usually provide the basis for much of the diet counsel that

people espouse. (washingtonpost.com)

Excessive exercise can be harmful

By CASSIDY CLAYTON Copy Editor

“TIME” magazine writer Alice Park published an article for the latest edition on Feb. 2. This article is titled “When Exercise Does More Harm Than Good.” Quite an interesting title! It is a popular belief that the more exercise you do, the healthier you are. Park is quick to point out here that that is not the case. Research is being done that may prove doing too much exercise will undo any beneficial effects. The main article discussed by

Park is by Marott and others published in the “Journal of the American College of Cardiology” earlier this month. The study was conducted over a 12 year period, adjusting for participant’s age, sex and other factors. Not exercising enough might have the same longterm effects as those who train to the extreme. These effects deal mostly with the cardiac muscles. Because the function of the heart depends on the structure, excessive exercising may change the way the heart moves and, consequently, functions. Other effects are

previously mentioned in other health studies, such as running outside too much without sun block may lead to an increased chance of skin cancer. What is excessive exercise? In the study mentioned by Park, it is jogging more than two and a half hours to four hours at an average pace less than three times a week. In other words, this would be maxing out exercises to last multiple hours for a couple days a week. You would think it is common sense to have more of an even workout schedule, but for dedicated

athletes and fitness enthusiasts, stopping a workout too soon is a horrible idea. So what is a good amount of exercise? At least for cardio, you should run less than three times a week, for one to 2.4 hours, at a slow to moderate pace. Tabata workouts are becoming a hit among fitness enthusiasts because you are being constantly pushed for six minutes a workout at thirty second intervals. Although this does not help for endurance, tabata workouts target just the right amount of effort to burn calories, maintain

heart health and maintain a healthy lifestyle. More research needs to be conducted before all health programs are changed, however, it would be beneficial for those training in extreme environments for extended periods of time to rethink what they are actually doing to their bodies in the long term. h t t p : / / t i m e . com/3692668/when-exercisedoes-more-harm-than-good/

KHS Club: Workout alternatives

By SEAN KRATCHMAN Staff Writer At Georgetown, there are many different ways to be physically active. In last week’s KHS Club Column, I wrote about the dangers of physical inactivity and how it affects people globally. Even if you didn’t read it, you most likely know that staying physically active is vital for your health. But what if you don’t like traditional exercise? The weight room can be very intimidating to some, and a lot of people don’t know where to start once they’re in there. How are you supposed to be physically active then? Green tea provides health benefits

By KAYLA BOSWELL Staff Writer

Green tea originated from China and dates back more than 4,000 years. It was said that green tea was first brewed in 2737 BC. From this, there are many types of Chinese green tea such as Dragon Mountain, Jasmine tea, Japanese Green tea called Sencha (there are many types of this), Matcha tea (a fine green tea powder) and Monkey tea. Each type of tea is grown in different areas of China or Japan. Today, there are other places of the world where green tea is grown such as Gorreana, Azores Islands and Portugal. With different areas that green tea is grown, comes a

variety of flavors. There can be a strong or light aroma. Some green teas have flowers mixed with them. Fruits can be added to green tea for different flavors. Green tea is actually the most popular and harvested tea among the world (this is between black, red and white teas). In many types of research, green tea has been shown to improve blood flow and lower cholesterol. It also helps prevent high blood pressure and congestive heart failure. Research has also shown that it helps block the formation of plaques that are linked to Alzheimer’s disease. In one study, there were MRI scans of people who drank green tea and those that did not. The people who

drank green tea had higher activity in the memory area of their brains. Green tea contains catechins, which are antioxidants that fight and prevent cell damage. It also contains flavonoids, which help prevent the loss of taste as you age (dark chocolate works for this as well). Also, in cholesterol, green tea decreases the LDL cholesterol while having no effect on the HDL cholesterol (this is based on a 2011 and 2013 meta–analysis). There are many studies out there that state that green tea aids in weight loss, but nothing provides conclusive evidence. Normally, when studies talk about green tea aiding in weight loss, they may mean

“Connate” now showing in Wilson Gallery By KAYLA BOSWELL Staff Writer In the Anne Wright Wilson Gallery, there is an exhibit called “Connate” by Isadora Stowe. Upon walking into the gallery, one would expect there to be painting or sculptures, something to fill up the giant one room gallery. Instead, you are greeted with purple walls with small paintings on wooden blocks that are sprinkled throughout the gallery on the walls. On these walls, there are giant black drawings of various things. Sitting against the wall nearest to the door, there is a giant flower, bridge and an airplane tangled up in a tree with bows tied around it, there are some moths and a giant daisy. These are the most noticeable things that draw you closer. You see various shapes with different hues that upon closer inspection have random things on them. These random things hold meaning to each individual person, though. Some blocks have ribbon candies on them, some of them have birds on them, others have houses. Each block is an individual. This exhibit takes on a childhood perspective. It reminds someone of simpler times of candy and houses,

These things could include memories such as ribbon candy that was delicious and exciting to get or the birds that greeted you in the morning. Guild Game of the Week: Dragons! By KAYLA BOSWELL Staff Writer Recently, it has been noted that I should write about Dragon Age. Multiple students have asked me to write about this popular role–playing video game. “Dragon Age” is a video game series that BioWare created. It can be played on Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3 and 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One and OS X. The first part of this series is called “Dragon Age: Origins,” and it is followed by the sequel “Dragon Age II.” In November 2014, “Dragon Age: Inquisition” was released. Along with these games comes one expansion pack called “Dragon Age: Origins- Awakening” and many DLC’s (Downloadable Content). Along with the game, there are five novels that are set in the “Dragon Age”

Source: Wikimedia.org/EA Games

“Dragon Age” is very popular. universe, the first being released in early 2009 and the last being released in late 2014. There is an anime film

that was released in Japanese theaters in 2012 called “Dragon Age: Dawn of the Seeker.” On top of that, there are various webcomics about “Dragon Age: Origins” by Penny Arcade. The timeline to this webcomic is set before the game. A few graphic novels and comic books have been released about “Dragon Age” as well. Considering that there are so many things published about it, “Dragon Age” is a very popular game series. The question that has yet to be answered is what is “Dragon Age” all about? Well, to start, it is not just “Dragon Age” (according to the student who informed me about the game). Just to give a brief overlook, “Dragon Age: Origins’” story shall be told in a very gerbil-like view. The game starts off with choosing the character’s sex, race (between human, elf or dwarf) and class (between warrior, rogue or mage). The decisions

that you make in this stage determine where you begin the game. The gerbil-version of the plot is basically this: After about 400 years since the last blight, a new Archdemon is seeking out to destroy the land of Ferelden. As one of the remaining legendary Grey Wardens, it is left to your character to unite the armies that were divided in Ferelden to save humanity. There you go. The best gerbil-like version I can give. Many more things go on in the game, but there is so much that it would be hard to make it fit. The game is quite a long one, but as mentioned before, a popular and well-loved game. According to GameStop ratings, “Dragon Age: Origins” (if you include the expansion) gets a rating of 9 out of 10. So I would say it is a pretty awesome game to try out.

“50 Shades” of better things to do By KAYLA BOSWELL and KAYLA BROWN Staff Writers Once upon a time, there was a book that was written. A book that caused readers to ask themselves “Why am I reading this?” Then, said book was made into a movie and you decided to go see it with your sweetheart, who sat next to you wondering “Why are we watching this when we could be cuddling?” What movie are we talking about? “50 Shades of Grey,” that’s what. Yeah, I know. It is now a movie. So, instead of watching some R rated movie based on a fanfic in the cinemas with your sweetheart and thanking your stars that your relationship isn’t like the one in the movie, here is

what you should try instead. On Valentine’s Day you could watch “Kingsman,” which is an action packed spy movie that has explosions and British snarkiness. Alfred from Batman is in it as well, so it’s great for a couple. There is also lovey-dovey music on Pandora that two lovebirds could listen while cuddling somewhere. A letter filled with love and adorableness that flows out of it like glitter could be sent to your sweetheart. And chocolates. If you are a male, never forget the chocolates. Women love chocolates… Except for the rare ones that despise such a treat. Do not buy those women chocolate. You will regret it. Flowers are also a given. Roses, tulips or lilies are popular. Get some of those if you really want to. Or perhaps

you sweetheart loves adorable things like puppies and kittens. There are giant stuffed animals at stores that can be given. Buy them all of the stuffed animals with hearts. Shower them with the love of adorable fluffy non-living animals that can be given to children too. Need a movie to watch? An older movie called “Bed of Roses” is about a woman who isn’t searching for love and a man falls for her quickly. He owns a flower shop and sends dozens of the woman’s favorite rose to her every day, trying to get her to fall in love with him. Another movie, “My Fair Lady,” is about a British linguist who takes a lower class British girl, teaches her how to speak well, and falls in love with her in the process.

Pandora not doing well for that romantic mood? Try some Frank Sinatra or Andrea Bocelli. Both are Italian singers, but Frank sings in English and Andrea sings in romantic opera Italian. The Italians not doing well for you? Why not try some French singers? We don’t know any French singers, but we both are sure it is a thing. So, before you somehow decide to watch “50 Shades of Grey,” try some of these things first. It will be a better use of your time, since you can be more romantic with all of the love-filled Valentine’s things. Also, you could be original with something romantic. That works too.

tine’s Day, it seems that way. If a guy just simply forgets to get his girl a gift on Valentine’s Day, it is a terrible thing and she dislikes him. She could simply just let it pass, but many girls really take a liking to this day. Does anyone remember being in elementary school and having to make their own Valentine box from a shoe box? Apparently, now there are small mailboxes that you can buy for that. It takes the fun out of making the box, but the mailboxes are pretty cool and some things can be bought to make your own Valentine’s box for those cards. Still, the glitter and glue and searching for a shoe box was awesome. The best part of Valentine’s Day is the day after. Everything goes on sale, the adorable stuffed animals, the beautiful potted flowers and, yes, the chocolate. It all goes quickly within that day, just like Halloween. Everything is cheap because the stores want to make room for Easter things, so sales go to about 50 percent off, which are good deals for those who want good, quality chocolate. In part of this sweet and love–filled holiday, try not to let anyone feel unloved. Just because you have a sweetheart, doesn’t mean you should let your friends feel unloved. It is important to know that even if you don’t have a significant other, you still have friends that love you. Also, chocolate. Beware of all that chocolate.

Opinion Why “Turn Down For What” is better than “CoCo”

Issue 3

By EVAN MOORE Opinion Editor There is a new song circling around the Interwebs entitled “CoCo” wherein the chorus says, “I’m in love with the coco.” CoCo, in this sense, is a euphamism for cocaine. This song includes phrases such as “I got the baking soda,” “Need a brick, miss my free throw” and “water whip like I’m Nemo.” Coupling these with some of the least creative chord progressions since twentieth century classical music makes one of the worst overplayed songs of our lives. It’s not even funny. On the other hand, 2014 produced one of the best songs since “Baby Got Back:” “Turn Down For What.” “Turn Down For What,” a classic released in the former

to slow down and turn down. One cannot ignore the sheer hilarity of the abrupt lyrics, music or video. An Asian college–age man stands atop the roof of an apartment complex, and wreaks havoc amongst the residents as he crashes through the ceiling of each story. Passing an Indian girl and a Latino family, he inevitably ends up in the basement at a huge, raging party. His demolition is led by his innate sense to throw down, which can only be assumed to be birthed from the music playing in the background. The climaxes of each chorus are synchronized to match the Asian man’s plunges to the subsequent floors beneath. It is truly one

of the funniest videos I’ve ever seen. “Turn Down For What” is a fast–paced tune made perfect for outrageous dancing and yelling, “Turn down for what?” as loud as possible with no judgement. “CoCo,” however, only praises the lifestyle provided by an addiction to cocaine. There is little to no truly deeper meaning to what O. T. Genasis is saying. I am not saying that it is a bad song, and by no means would I judge someone poorly for any music preference; however, I simply don’t see the hype. It’s slow, has a mediocre—if not uncreative— melody and has a sadly boring music video. “Turn Down For What” is for what I turn down.

Oxford Honors and just knew I was getting a spot. I wrote a list of all the things I wanted to do, how I was going to do all those things and the time frame I had to do it all. I was in a not–so–great relationship with a jerk from high school, and I was trying to adjust to everything that it brought on. My parents had never spent so much time away from me, and we were all freaking out. I made some new friends who helped me through all that. Fast forward a semester. I was single, involved in Greek life and having the best time of

With sophomore year started many events that have ultimately brought me here: wearing sweats, eating cereal out of the box, watching Netflix in bed as I write this. My friends don’t hang out with me as often. I work more hours than sleep. My grades are back on track. And I’m still happy. I’m sure no one on campus is entirely unaffected by college. So many things have happened to me in just the course of two years, and the semester isn’t close to being over. I’ve done a couple of 180s in my life already, and I’m still young.

Our brains are still changing noticeably, and won’t stop until way after we graduate. Because of this constant change, there are still several questions hanging in the balance. What could my next few years bring? Who will I be when I graduate? When will I get my first job, and what will it be? When will I move into my own house? Who will you be when you grow up?

College is a time of beneficial change

By CASSIDY CLAYTON Copy Editor We all arrived here at different points in our lives. Whether we came here as freshman, transferred from another school, or just found ourselves here on our walks of life (how did you do that?). We all started college at a different point in our lives than we are in now. It changes us. When I started college, I wanted to be the best at everything. I had graduated at the top of my class with a perfect GPA. I was accepted into

my life. I was also getting C’s. My hopes of the Dean’s List and all academic honors were squandered. I couldn’t even get my GPA back up enough to apply to Oxford. I was happy, though! I just started to find out how real social groups work (I was raised in a small town with the same 40 people in my classes). I tried some new things, said goodbye to the seniors and went home. My family immediately saw the difference between high school me and college me. They liked college me better, and I did too.

Letters to Georgetonia part 3: Villainy for Dummies

By FicElrath BackPage Editor Greetings Georgetonia! As the weeks wear on, they wear on the citizens and students of Georgetonia as well. The papers, the quizzes, the tests—it is a constant battle to maintain that grade point average. The bouts of plague come and go, and as the nostalgia of seeing our contemporaries again after three weeks away wears off, the veil over our eyes is lifted. We see our fellow Georgetonians in the dim light of a winter’s day, as they “truly” are: obnoxious, annoying, loud. You dream up ways to do away with them, to rid yourself of this constant annoyance and obstruction of school work, but none of your plans seem to be feasible. That, my dearest Georgetonia, is where I come in. As an expert in all things super villain, I have put together this guide to end your enemies in the most humane way possible. I call it, ‘Villainy for Dummies’. 1. Rule number one: Create your

I personally enjoy the color purple because it says, “I’m fun!” and “Too Royal for you.” Much like the coat–of–arms worn by knights in medieval times, this color will be your signature, the perfect thing to distinguish your minions from everyone else’s minions. 2. of kittens, puppies, goats and other such annoyingly cute animals with equally annoying captions. And that, my dear Georgetonia, is how to become a villain in seven easy steps. There is no need to start big with assassinations of nemeses (ninjas are expensive!) or taking out that building that blocks the view from your window. Nothing is worse than amateur villains trying to take over the world on their first go. All that accomplishes is to attract the eye of some un– awoken superhero and that is the end of that. Start simple. Kill your enemies with kindness. Why, how do you think I got to where I am today? Yours Truly, FicElrath
