PRESENTING SPONSOR AN EVENING TO SUPPORT BREAST CANCER RESEARCH AND PROGRAMS AT
Dear Friends,
As we celebrate the 16th Annual Lombardi Women Event, we are in awe of its growth from a small gathering of women to one of the most dynamic and sought-after philanthropic events in the Washington, DC region. This year is particularly meaningful, as it marks our final year as co-chairs. We are so inspired by this journey and the amazing movement we have built. During our time leading this event, we have grown as individuals, as friends, and as professionals. And most importantly, we have made a difference—raising over $4.5 million in support of breast cancer research.
This event is about women supporting women and it is animated by the power of people and partnerships. We are so grateful for this community—your commitment to our mission continues to move us closer to a cure for breast cancer.
For over 50 years, the Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center has worked to push the needle on cancer research. Since its establishment, Georgetown Lombardi has transformed countless lives affected by cancer through compassionate patient care, meaningful community engagement, and innovative research and education.
With your help, Georgetown Lombardi continues to pioneer advances in breast cancer treatment. In our 16 years of partnership, Lombardi Women has played a critical role in enhancing the stature of the Nina Hyde Center for Breast Cancer Research. Our philanthropic funds have fueled impactful research discoveries and driven vital community engagement and awareness.
On behalf of the Lombardi Women Executive Committee and the patients and families that these funds benefit, we thank you for your support. Together, our efforts have had a remarkable impact. We are so proud of this amazing event, and all of the powerful women who make it possible. We look forward to seeing what is to come in the next chapter of Lombardi Women and will be cheering you on every step of the way.
Sincerely, Janet Davis Brooks

The Georgetown Lombardi Difference… A team of breast cancer physicians and scientists dedicated to the cure
The Nina Hyde Center for Breast Cancer Research promotes advanced breast cancer research at the Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center. The research done at the Nina Hyde Center makes Georgetown one of the world’s leading institutions for breast cancer research.
Founded by fashion designer Ralph Lauren and the late Washington Post Company president Katharine Graham, the Center was established in 1989 as a tribute to Nina Hyde, former fashion editor of The Washington Post
The Nina Hyde Center represents a long-standing, multidisciplinary strategy between Lombardi’s basic scientists, population researchers, and clinicians. Dedicated Lombardi scientists and physicians study breast cancer, striving to uncover the biological basis of the many faces of breast cancer, and to work towards its prevention and cure.
Breast cancer is one of the top two causes of cancer mortality in women, and the Washington, DC area suffers the highest incidence of breast cancer nationwide. As
the only National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated comprehensive cancer center in the metro area, Georgetown Lombardi works to address these problems locally and nationally through the Nina Hyde Center.
The renowned scientists and clinicians at the Nina Hyde Center work in collaboration with the team at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital’s Betty Lou Ourisman Breast Health Center to provide the most advanced, comprehensive cancer care available to the women of the Washington, DC region.
Philanthropic donations to the Nina Hyde Center support one of the world’s largest and most respected breast cancer research programs, empowering Lombardi scientists to pursue promising ideas still in their infancy. These gifts support the work that is most speculative and most likely to find a cure.

Thank You Barbara and Janet…
I am delighted to be with you as we gather again in-person for this evening’s celebration. The events of the past two and a half years have tested each of us, in both our personal and professional capacities. We have all faced challenges and setbacks as we navigated our way through the COVID-19 pandemic. At Georgetown Lombardi, we were driven by the knowledge that while the world may have paused in so many ways, cancer continued to affect our families, friends, and colleagues.
As we celebrate the 16th Annual Lombardi Women, I reflect upon the people and partnerships that make this event possible. I am so grateful for this community— your support animates our mission and brings us closer to a cure for cancer every day. I am particularly grateful to two very special women who have dedicated their time, talent, and resources to this event—Barbara Schaefer McDuffie and Janet Davis Brooks. We owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to Barbara and Janet for their leadership, vision, and dedication to growing this event and raising awareness of the Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center and our mission.
Since 2006, this event has raised over $4.5 million for breast cancer programs at Lombardi, helping fund research, clinical trials, community outreach, and patient care. So, it is with great sadness that we acknowledge that this will be the last Lombardi Women Event with Barbara and Janet at the helm. Thank you both so very much for being our fearless leaders. We will miss you and wish you all the best in your retirement.
While Barbara and Janet may not be our co-chairs going forward, I know they have put in place an incredible community of women who will help us continue this great event. Thank you to all the fabulous committee members, as well as our sponsors—some of whom have been supporting us since the very first event. It truly takes a village to continue moving the needle toward a cure for cancer and this village is incredible!
On behalf of the Georgetown Lombardi team and the patients and families that we serve, I thank you for your generosity toward our efforts to prevent, treat, and cure breast cancer. Together, we have made remarkable progress, and our future shows great promise.

In 2006, I was asked to join a small group of women for a dinner at The Palm restaurant in Tysons, VA to discuss the latest advances in breast cancer research and care. What started that evening as a small dinner of about 60 women has grown into one of the largest breast cancer fundraising events is the metro DC area—all due to the leadership of Barbara Schaefer McDuffie and Janet Davis Brooks. Every year since, I have returned to present a cancer briefing and share with more and more women the tremendous advances that are being made in breast cancer research and patient care. I am incredibly grateful for Barbara and Janet’s dedication, the enthusiasm with which they share our mission, and the genuine warmth and friendship they have given me over the years.
The funds provided by Lombardi Women have made a tremendous difference to myself and many others here at Georgetown Lombardi’s Nina Hyde Center for Breast Cancer Research. These funds have supported early career scientists and established researchers alike, allowing them
to conduct pilot projects and continue important work during periods between grants. While the impact of this funding has been unmeasurable in terms of discovery, it has quantifiably led to over $6M in additional funding from government and private foundations in the last few years alone.
Thank you so much, Barbara and Janet, for all you have done to advance breast cancer research and care. This effort you have built is an inspiration—not just to the women in the room tonight, but to all of us at Georgetown Lombardi. We will miss your leadership but look forward to continuing this wonderful event with the great team you have built, and the generous supporters who make it possible.

Professor of Medicine and Oncology Associate Director, Clinical Research Leader, Clinical Breast Cancer Program Co-Director, Fisher Center for Hereditary Cancer and Clinical Genomics Research
As co-leader of the Breast Cancer Program at Lombardi and Dean for Research at GUMC, I had the tremendous pleasure of working with both Barbara and Janet for several years. And what a pleasure it truly was… never a dull moment with those two—just keeping up with them was a job in itself—but also, what fun!
As a researcher, it is always wonderful to share your work with people who are interested and passionate about what you do. Barbara and Janet visited my lab on many occasions and brought many others along with them to see just how cancer research is done—how intricate and detailed it is along with how much support is needed. They really got it and they shared their understanding, passion, and enthusiasm with many. They are both advocates for Georgetown Lombardi par excellence.
Learning about what we researchers do and then educating others was so important to all of us at Georgetown Lombardi, helping us share our mission and vision, and helping us raise funds for the work we do to find a cure for cancer. Over the years, Barbara and Janet grew the Lombardi Women Event to spread the word about all of Lombardi to more and more women in the community. In doing so they raised awareness of the role philanthropy plays in cancer research and raised desperately needed support for our shared mission. At a time of reduced
funding and increased competition in research, the funds provided by Lombardi Women helped us to explore new research opportunities as well as grow our established programs. The funds raised transformed the careers of several of our investigators and helped to shape the landscape of research at Lombardi. They truly made a difference for us all.
Barbara and Janet, thank you for all the support you gave to the breast cancer research program at Lombardi, for the fun you brought to all that you did, and for your amazing ability to excite, engage, and educate others. I wish you both all the very best in your retirement from your roles, though I can’t imagine either of you sitting still for very long! Without question, you have left an important legacy for cancer research support at Georgetown Lombardi and I know each one of the researchers are truly grateful for all that you have done.
All the very best—you will be missed (I surely miss you two)!
