A MESSAGE

FROM THE CHAIR OF THE BOARD OF ADVISORS

DEAR BOARD OF ADVISORS AND PARENTS ADVISORY COUNCIL MEMBERS, We will gather in Washington, D.C., for our fall meeting to discuss the peak moments that define the student experience at the McDonough School of Business. The strength and rigor of our curriculum is paramount, but it’s also within the peak moments – the Executive Challenge, the Ethics Project, the First Year Seminar, global immersions and consulting projects, and more – that we breathe life into coursework, demonstrate concepts through real-world contexts, and allow students to apply their lessons in meaningful ways. At our meeting, we will hear from Deans Prashant Malaviya and Patricia Grant to learn more about how we orchestrate these transformative moments, both big and small, throughout the student experience. We also will have the opportunity to experience some of these moments firsthand with Professor Jason Brennan, creator of the Ethics Project, and Professor Mario Ramirez, managing director of the Dikran Izmirlian Business and Global Affairs Program. This is an exciting time to be at Georgetown McDonough, and I look forward to welcoming our new and current members to the Hilltop to discuss how we can leverage these teaching innovations and experiences to prepare students for careers of the future. Sincerely,

Robert H. Steers (B’75, P’06, P’08, P’10) Chair Board of Advisors

A MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN

DEAR COLLEAGUES, It has been a whirlwind start to the semester. Just in the past few weeks, we traveled abroad to celebrate the launch of our Executive MBA program in Dubai, we discussed sustainability and decarbonization at the Leadership and Innovation Summit, and we convened with leading policymakers and executives to address the future of globalization. These are extraordinary milestones, and I look forward to sharing these updates with you during the fall board meeting. We continue to find new ways to build our capabilities and leverage our differentiators as we shape the future of business: • Through our growing list of faculty-led centers and initiatives, we advance faculty thought leadership, address important issues in society, and inform the way we teach, learn, and practice business. • With a focus on student success, we offer innovative new programs such as the M.S. in Global Real Assets to help prepare students to positively impact business and society, we have introduced transformative diversity and inclusion efforts in our student organizations, we have elevated our career offerings across all levels, and we remain committed to preparing our students to become leaders for tomorrow. • Steeped in the Jesuit tradition of global discovery, we continue to expand our global mission with the official launch of the Baratta Center for Global Business, as well as through our new global programs such as the Executive MBA in Dubai and other immersive experiences abroad. • With the ever-growing complexity of business, we deepen our understanding of the fields of the future with new events, research, and programs stemming from our AI, Analytics, and Future of Work and our Business of Sustainability Initiatives. • And finally, with our Jesuit values as a compass, we continue to explore new ways to care for our community in mind, body, and spirit through wellness and whole-person programming. As we innovate and push forward, I am grateful to all of you for shaping and transforming big ideas that will benefit the future of business. Each effort toward these goals, big or small, contributes to our combined legacy of impact. Thank you for all you do to continue to elevate Georgetown McDonough’s reputation for being the best in the world and the best for the world. Best,

Paul Almeida Dean and William R. Berkley Chair Professor of Strategy

LEADING AT THE INTERSECTION OF BUSINESS AND GLOBAL AFFAIRS Joseph (B’93) and Abigail (SFS’96) Baratta have made an $11 million gift to the McDonough School of Business, building on the foundation of previous gifts by the Baratta family and the success of the Georgetown McDonough Global Business Initiative. This multifaceted gift comprises three parts: to endow, enhance, and enlarge the Global Business Fellows program; to name, endow, and support the Baratta Center for Global Business; and to establish the Baratta International Business Curriculum Endowed Innovation Fund.

The newly renamed Baratta Center hosted its inaugural Future of Global Business Conference, bringing together senior executives from the international business community, policymakers, and Georgetown faculty, students, and alumni for a far-reaching discussion on the future of global business. The conference focused on global value chains, cross-border investing, artificial intelligence, and the future of globalization. The event featured speakers from across industries, including U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo, Moisés Naím, distinguished fellow of the Carnegie Endowment and former minister of trade and industry for Venezuela, and Joseph Baratta (B’93), global head of private equity at Blackstone.

INVESTING IN FIELDS OF THE FUTURE AI, Analytics, and the Future of Work Alberto Rossi, professor and director of the AI, Analytics, and Future of Work Initiative, convened leaders from across industries to assess how ChatGPT and AI-powered technologies will impact the world of work. The Future of Work Initiative hosted a panel with the Brookings Institution on the impact of AI on labor market outcomes, as well as conversations with QuantumBlack-McKinsey on the future of consulting and Edelman Smithfield on the future of finance. Rossi also organized a virtual event with Status Money on how AI language models will influence the evolution of robo-advisors and FinTech.

Business of Sustainability Over 400 students, business leaders, policymakers, and sustainability experts gathered at Georgetown McDonough to discuss critical issues related to decarbonization strategies during the inaugural Leadership and Innovation Summit. The summit was hosted by the Business of Sustainability Initiative to convene experts from across industries and discuss topics such as carbon offsets, renewable energy, and the supply chain and circular economy. Attendees engaged in conversations with internationally recognized leaders in sustainability, including Hayes Barnard, chairman and CEO, GoodLeap and GivePower, Lauren Riley, chief sustainability officer, United Airlines, M. Sanjayan, CEO of Conservation

International, and Nicole Steele, workforce and equitable access lead, U.S. Department of Energy, senior advisor, Environmental Protection Agency. Students in the inaugural Master of Science in Environment and Sustainability Management cohort completed their capstone projects to culminate their experience in the 11-month program – delivering solutions to different types of organizations on a current sustainable business issue. The projects included large corporations such as Amazon, Starbucks, and Blommer Chocolate; solar energy firms such as Nexus Power Group; startups such as Splight; and environmental institutions such as the Department of Energy and the National Institute of Standards and Technology. In a remarkable stride towards fostering positive change and societal impact, Georgetown McDonough’s Net Impact Club has been awarded for the second consecutive year the

prestigious Gold Status by the national Net Impact, a global organization dedicated to mobilizing the next generation of leaders for creating a better world. Over the last year, the club has orchestrated nine curated events aimed at providing networking and career pathing opportunities across impact-related industries, including education, nonprofit, government, corporate sustainability, renewable energy, and more. The club also successfully raised over $65,000 for the McDonough Social Impact Internship Fund.

Entrepreneurship and Innovation Georgetown Entrepreneurship hosted its annual Spring 2023 Rocket Pitch Competition, a classic “elevator-style” pitch competition where Georgetown students present a two-minute pitch in front of an esteemed judging panel and an audience of peers and professionals. Of the 40 teams that participated, the grand prize winner of $1,500 and the winner of the People’s Choice Award of $250 was Georgetown

Business and Public Policy 11 undergraduate students in the McDonough School of Business and Walsh School of Foreign Service recently traveled to meet with legislators, policymakers, regulators, and market participants in Washington, D.C., and New York City to learn about current issues at the intersection of finance and public policy through the inaugural FinPolicy Trek, hosted by the Psaros Center for Financial Markets and Policy.

SUPPORTING FACULTY SCHOLARSHIP

REUSE, founded by Stephane Granato (SFS’24), Brooke Hodge (SFS’24), and Molly Austin (SFS’25). Georgetown REUSE focuses on reducing waste and increasing access to affordable clothes, school supplies, and dorm materials within the Georgetown community. Georgetown students competed in the annual Georgetown Entrepreneurship Challenge Finals, winning thousands of dollars in prizes. Enna Health won the graduate division first place and Orbit won the undergraduate division first place grand prizes, amounting to $10,000 for each team to support their business ideas. Georgetown Entrepreneurship also handed out annual Georgetown Entrepreneurial Excellence awards to students, mentors, and faculty during the event.

13 | 2023 FALL LEADERSHIP MEETING

Undergraduate students from the McDonough School of Business and the Walsh School of Foreign Service convened renowned leaders at the intersection of venture capital, entrepreneurship, and public policy for the first student-led Venture in the Capital Summit. In an effort to provide Georgetown undergraduate students with greater access to the global startup community, Georgetown Entrepreneurship matched students with startups in Mexico City through its inaugural Global Startup Interns program to provide an immersive internship experience abroad. Students traveled to Mexico over the summer to network with fellow Hoyas, learn about entrepreneurship, and explore the culture in Mexico City.

Thanks to a $4 million gift, McDonough has established the Annette N. Shelby Endowed Chair in Business & Leadership Communication with the appointment of Jeanine Turner, joint professor in the Georgetown McDonough School of Business and the Communication, Culture, and Technology program. Georgetown McDonough students, alumni, and community members came together to recognize the two decades of growth and innovation in the Undergraduate Program’s Operations and Analytics Major (formerly known as Operations and Information Management).
