And break rules, he did. Introducing the Godfather of Grunge - a representative of a generation that was “not for anything, but against everything”. David Carson began his career in Graphic Design after attending a creative workshop at the age of 26 in 1980. At the time he was a teacher in sociology, and by 1984 he was the art director for Transworld Skateboarding. Working for as a graphic designer for a number of other magazines, including Transworld Snowboarding, Beach Culture, Surfer Magazine and Surfers Journal, Carson went on to design Ray Gun, where his most famous work was done. His work was messy, with hard, jarring type and used the photographs most art directors would not look twice at. His original and striking take on design has led him to be called ‘the most famous graphic designer in the world’, and has gone on to work with a myriad of corporate corporate companies and designed am album cover for the band, Nine Inch Nails.
