Airport: A Crossroad of Civilizations. diploma Thesis Project, Technical University of Crete work team: A. Tralo & G. Voradaki
An airport is a place where people from all around the world, with different cultures, traditions, notions, memories and experiences meet. However, they hardly ever interact with each other. Passengers come and go and no kind of communication takes place among them, resulting in losing the chance of getting knowledge from other passengers’ experience, with completely different background. In other words, the accumulation of so many people is equivalent to the accumulation of abundant knowledge, which is not utilized in 4 . Airport: A Crossroad of Civilizations
the case of the airport. The exchange of information, even in the simplest way (e.g. chatting), could be considered a valuable contribution to the broadening of an individual’s mental horizon and this can be easily achieved in a place such as the airport, where there are so many different people, each one of them carrying his own history. Any personal history includes and carries pure knowledge, which as unique as the human fingerprint. Georgia Voradaki . Portfolio
Diagram of intent
In the new airport, all passengers will be part of a small community, which is being changed continually, when a passenger enters or leaves the terminal. Spatial stimuli (colors, specific geometries etc.) will make people feel closer to one onother and create the grounds for discussion. In addition, passengers will communicate and exchange experiences through a digital platform.

About the form of the airport, 3 curved surfaces will be folded to create the new building. The 1st curve is coming from the North, the 2nd from the East and the 3rd from the South, signifying the key location of Crete, the crossroad of Europe, Asia and Africa. Each one of them will have a different kind of use. The 1st one will include the entrance and the processing activities (check-in, security, departure lounges). The 2nd will include the non-public spaces: administration offices, maintenance room etc.The 3rd one will include the discretionary activities of the passengers (shops, money exchange).

Location: The structure is located in the center of the city with the greatest people accumulation. Its wide public accessibility makes the square ideal to create an information pavilion. Goal: The goal is to create an informational downtown core that will enhance the pulse of the international event.
The initial idea was the unification of two spheres, the football ball and the globe. The first one creates a Concept:
geodesic dome that encloses the main spaces of the pavilion. This form gives the possibility of creating a pavilion without columns; with a

parametrical accessibility. The second one is unfolded into a spiral. The spiral creates a platform on which facilities and administration spaces are located, and a ramp that brings visitors upstairs lying in the watch game loft. Construction: The construction consists of a metal geodesic dome with the hexagon as a basic unit. The hexagons have flexi fillings (screens, solar panels and metal sheets) while others remain empty for ventilation and lighting purposes. In the exterior space desi by the building visitors can interact with the screens whether to be informed or to watch the matches.

The shell offers a changeable facade. Each hexagon can operate independently or in group with the rest, creating, thus, various-size screens. These screens can display live events or remind visitors of old FIFA events.

Studio Residence. project for the “Interior Design course Technical University of Crete work team: A. Tomara & G. Voradaki
The 85 m2 interior of an abondoned tannery in the coastal area of Chania, is transformed into a studio residence for a single person, keeping the stone building intact. The main intention was to create an open space house allowing visibility in all areas. The residence is unfolded in three levels avoiding any vertical seperations; in the main floor are placed the living room and the kitchen area, in the 2nd level is the office area, and in the 3rd one is the bedroom. While ascending through the wooden stairs that are attached to the stone shell, one may have access to the bookshelves that are hanging through a metallic structure from the ceiling, creating a book filter.

Complete the Myth. project on the “Hohen - Medien” course Bauhaus University of Weimar
Purpose of the „Complete the Myth“ project is to urge people to communicate or exchange experiences and opinions through the act of writing stories. Narrating stories is something that excites us all. Every human being, independently of his age or general background, is interrested in telling or hearing narrations. It is in the human nature to invent unbelievable stories that keep the attention of the others awake. In the case of Kyffhaueser, there is already a myth about Barbarossa, the Emperor who is sleeping in the Kyffhaueser mountain until Germany needs his help again. But how is it going to be ended?

Concept
Visitors that are coming to Kyffhaueser will have the chance to read about Barbarossa or read stories that other visitors have written and then write their aspects, which will also be read by future visitors. In addition, narration is always a great medium for immersing an individual in another reality, the reality of Kyffhaueser. For realizing this concept, 9 „writing booths“ have been placed in central points all over the mountain, where visitors can have access to information about the myth - pictures, videos, poems - the region, the monument etc. After getting inspired, the individual would be able to give his feedback on the touch screen which is in the booth and connected via WiFi to a central computer that collects the information and at the same time publishes them to the rest of the booths. Thus, a continuous flow of new data will be constantly available to those who would like to be part of it. Regarding the design of this space, it has been taken into consideration the fact that each person feels comfortable to concentrate and write in a different body position. Thus, 3 different positions have been combined to create the structure. Furthermore, it has been designed to fit one adult or an adult and a child and it is two-axis rotatable, so anyone can choose the part of the view which inspires them the most.

The AirPOTition Prototype. research funded by the Technical University of Crete work team: A. Klothakis, K. Oungrinis, I. Paterakis, A. Tralo & G. Voradaki
The Airpotition project suggests a way of saving electric energy, water and money, and at the same time, offers a friendly and healthier environment to the habitants. It is based on the air-conditioning system that it is installed on the faรงade of almost every single building in the contemporary cities. 28 . The AirPOTition Prototype
AirPOTition proposes an alternative use of the useless outputs of external units in order to gain the amount of wasted energy, which comes from the water, as well as, the light which the external unit of the airconditioning system is exposed to.
More specifically, it collects the solar energy and converts it to electrical energy in order to be used by inhabitants and it utilizes the useless water for growing vertical gardens in cities which would contribute to a purified environment.
