This past year, we have had a lot of fun, fellowship, and service in the Georgia District. None of it could have been possible without our wonderful members. We want to say thank you for making a difference this year—whether it was volunteering at the Special Olympics, making sandwiches for the homeless, visiting the nursing home, helping at your local animal, or raising money for the ELIMIATE Project. You guys made a huge difference this year, and we could not be prouder to serve as your 2012-2013 Georgia District Board. We wish each of you the best in this new upcoming CKI year. Keep living to serve and loving to serve!

Hello Georgia District, It is with sadness that I write to you for the last time in the occupation as your Georgia District Governor. Don’t worry though we have a strong board that was elected at DCON this year and they are ready to take the reins of the district starting April 1st. This year has been amazing and one of the best that the district has experienced in the past several years. Thank you to all of those that have worked together with the district board to make everything happen this year! This year at our District Convention we elected new leadership and I would like to put out a strong request that everyone in the district look up to their leadership and help them fulfill their positions. They are going to do their best to serve you and will make themselves 100% available to you when you are in need of assistance. Also at our convention we were able to raise $1,381.77 for the ELIMINATE project to help rid the world of the terrible disease of MNT. Thank you for all those that have contributed and please continue to fundraise in your clubs!

4

This year, we have grown several clubs and many members and still have to get this growth even higher before the end of the year on March 31st! Please make sure that you add your new Circle K club members to your

international rosters and pay the district dues for them. This gives them the many benefits of being a member of the organization and ensures that if there are any problems at service projects or other club/district related activities that they will be covered by the liability insurance of the organization. We are currently 80 members away from reaching our district goal of 350 members which would give us an amazing 15% membership growth over last year. In closing to my year as governor I would like to make a strong request that everyone in the district make one last effort to help the district fulfill our goals! We are so close to our service hour goal being only 587 hours shy of our goal of 4,500 services hours this year. Please encourage all members of your clubs to reach out to their local communities and make a difference so that we can not only meet our district goal, but also have an outstanding impact on our local communities. Thank you, each and every one of you, for making this year my most amazing while in Circle K. I hope to continue to serve by your side in the upcoming years and I hope to continue to see all of you at future events! If you ever want a friend to chat with or need help with anything please email me <stefanludlow@gatech.edu> or seek me out on Facebook.

Your Friend in Service with a Smile :)

Growth Update from

Christine Mayfield And the GA CKI Growth Committee In the beginning of the year, the Georgia District of Circle K made some strong goals. Of course, one of those goals was for the membership of the district to increase. Our goal was to reach 350 members in our district. We now have 330 members in our district and are only missing 20 members. That being said, there are two clubs that have reactivated and rechartered in our district that have helped to raise the member count. Georgia State University, located in Downtown Atlanta, has rechartered with 35 members in the Metro Division area. Oxford College at Emory University, located in Covington, Georgia, reactivated and established over 90 members. Both of these clubs have been through a battle to grow from small members; however, thanks to their club presidents, they have shown us that no matter what wall is in your way, you can always break it down to achieve your goals. Clubs in the Georgia District and, in fact, any club that is a part of Circle K should not be discouraged of decreasing club membership or a small membership base. In fact, take it has a challenge to overcome. Goals can help you to grasp an idea of how to increase your club membership. Club leaders should always keep your members’ interests in mind, as well as keep Georgia Circle K in the loop of your success. If you need some help, you can visit the Georgia Circle K District website online at http://ww.georgiacirclek.org. So why wait? Get a head start and find any information that you need today!

Georgia District Divisions The state of Georgia is broken up into smaller sections called “divisions.” Each division is elected a Lieutenant Governor (LTG) at Georgia’s District Convention (DCON), which is held every year. Though elections occur annually, it is not guaranteed that each division will be elected a Lieutenant Governor. Clubs that are in each division are overseen and advised by the elected Lieutenant Governor. Check out the 5 Divisions in Georgia!

This year, District Convention was held in the exciting city of Atlanta, GA! The weekend was packed with entertainment! Circle K'ers got to see the district board dressed up as pirates and were able to play Twister, Pin the Treasure on the Map, and several other games. Several members ran for the district board. They were all wonderful candidates, petitioning for their positions and answering questions with ease and dedication. Members also had an awesome time exploring the city and some even visited a classic 1950's themed diner with roller skating servers, The Varsity. With all this fun, Circle K'ers still made time for service projects. We made a huge pile of dog toys from old Tshirts and 150 sandwiches for the homeless! Saturday night, well deserved awards were handed out to various clubs and members (see next page). Everyone was dressed to impress and some club members amazed us with their talents of martial arts, singing, and acting.

12

We found an inspiring role model and speaker in the International Kiwanis President Tom DeJulio who attended our convention this year. It was a great honor to have him and several Kiwanians. Of course, the messiest and most entertaining part of the weekend was the Pie in the Face Fundraiser. There were many surprising and crazy betting wars over who will pie who and in the end, we were able to raise $1,381.77! Overall, District Convention was filled with memorable stories and a chance to meet some of the kindest people I know. I was impressed to see everyone's involvement in service, leadership, and fellowship. I will truly miss being a part of Circle K and working with my district board. However, I know the new district board will carry on the torch with matching effort and passion. Thank you to 2013-2014 Georgia District Board those who came to DCON, congratulations Governor: Brittany Horton Secretary: Elizabeth Ludlow to all, and good luck to the new board!  Georgia Circle K Hall of Fame Inductees: Anla Etheridge, Stacey Fountain, Dixita Patel, Bill and Alexia Lieber

At the 2013 District Convention, David Chang was awarded the Alice D. Stacey service award. He was given this award as recognition of the many service hours that he has completed as a member of the club. However, old man Chang was not publicly recognized as a graduating Circle K member and a member who has been in the club for more than four years so I will like to take this opportunity to do so. Since I joined the club in 2009, I have seen many members come and go. I have seen many people (including myself) get too busy to participate in service projects but David hasn’t been one of them. It has been great to see that even though he has been busy, he has made the time to help the community through Circle K. So, on behalf of Georgia Circle K, I will like to say thank you to Mr. Chang and also wish him good luck with his future plans.

Nominated by Simi Oludare

Last fall, the Georgia State club renewed its charter and rejoined our Circle K family, and I am personally glad that they did it. I have had the opportunity to visit their club a couple of times and they are some of the most enthusiastic Circle K members that I have ever met. They enjoy one another’s company and are genuinely happy to be helping their community through the service projects that they perform. I see the club getting bigger and doing greater things in the community and I am grateful that I have the opportunity to serve as their Lieutenant governor for one more year.

Pie-in-the-Face How much would you pay to pie the Kiwanis International President?

By Brittany Horton

As Georgia Circle K tradition, Saturday night holds many great surprises including: a talent show, an awards banquet, and our annual ELIMINATE Pie-in-the-Face Auction! Each year, the Georgia District auctions off its district board members to be pied for a cause. After auctioning off 12 amazing board members, including our own Georgia CKI Governor Stefan Ludlow, the Georgia District had the pleasure of welcoming two new victims to our annual charity—Georgia Kiwanis Governor Chuck Hood and Kiwanis International President Tom DeJulio! President Tom DeJulio was sold to his wife, Dr. Rosemary DeJulio, and Governor Chuck Hood was sold to the CKI Clubs Georgia Southern University, Young Harris College, and University of West Georgia. After many laughs, smiles, and pies flew, we were able to raise $1,381.77 in one night! Thanks to all of our hard-working clubs who raised for ELIMINATE this year, and a special thanks to our wonderful K-Family for coming out to support us. Thank you for a fantastic Circle K year, and we look forward to next year’s auction and a future without maternal/neonatal tetanus!

Do you love bowling? Club Socials? Your K-Family? Time to ELIMINATE! Georgia Southern University Circle K joined forces with local sponsoring Statesboro Kiwanis Club on Wednesday night, March 6, 2013, to have some fun and raise some money at the same time. Members came out for a night of bowling shoes, ELIMINATE bracelets, and some good ’ol family time. By the end of the night, the club had raised $12 and inspired their local Kiwanis club to also sell ELIMINATE bracelets at their upcoming club meetings.

How many of you have a club project that could use some extra funding? Every year several clubs receive a grant from Circle K International to help them fulfill projects that are specific to their areas. Click here to see projects and clubs that were awarded funds this year and remember to apply next year by the December 1st deadline! Please contact me at governor@georgiacirclek.org if you would like more information.—2012-2013 GA CKI Governor Stefan Ludlow

The March of Dimes is the leading nonprofit organization for pregnancy and baby health. March of Dimes was founded in 1938 by Franklin D. Roosevelt, but was originally known as the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis. The March of Dimes Mission is "To improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth, and infant mortality." There are so many things that you can do to raise money for this great organization, so get creative and do your part! - 2012-2013 Service Chair Victoria Byrd An excellent way to support the March of Dimes is by participating in our largest annual fundraiser, March for Babies. Sign up at marchforbabies.org/ kiwanis to join or start a new Circle K team! Choose “Circle K” as your division, and if you can’t locate your team on that page, simply enter your school name with “Circle K” included as your team name in the bottom in the “Enter as much as you know” box. You can find the date and location of your March for Babies at that site also! For more information on getting started, check out our School & Youth Team Tips: March for Babies – Getting Started video. There are tons of fun ways to get involved with March for Babies. Your club can host coin collections, dances, and in-school challenges to raise funds. Then join with your community in March for Babies to walk to give every baby a healthy start. You can find even more fundraising ideas in our School & Youth Team Tips: March for Babies – Fundraising video. And this year, take the challenge to Be Your Best for Babies and become a Top Team. For more resources and best practices to help your team be successful this year, check out the 2013 March for Babies Youth Toolkit. You can also utilize the March for Babies Facebook App and iPhone App & Android App. Once you register online, we give you all the fundraising tools you need! And keep up with the latest tools on the March for Babies blog. - Christopher Martz, CKI Director

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) was created after World War II to provide emergency aid to children in Europe and Asia. Today, UNICEF works in more than 150 countries and territories, supported entirely with voluntary contributions. Across the globe, wherever vulnerable children are struggling to survive, UNICEF is there with medicine, vaccines, clean water, and nutrition. Whatever vital help struggling children need, UNICEF will supply. Over the years, UNICEF has saved more children’s lives than any other humanitarian organization in the world. The U.S. Fund for UNICEF supports UNICEF’s mission through education, advocacy, and fundraising in the United States. One way your club can help this organization is to participate in Trick or Treat for UNICEF during October.

Every CKI club should save Saturday, April 6, 2013, for the annual Kiwanis service initiative observed worldwide – Kiwanis One Day. On Kiwanis One Day, every club is urged to join with the rest of the Kiwanis family--K-Kids, Builders, Circle K, Aktion Club, and Kiwanis--for a day of united service. Called Kiwanis One Day, the event is inspired by Past International President Nelson Tucker’s initiative to create a day that unites the entire Kiwanis family in service. Kiwanis One Day provides an opportunity to showcase the Kiwanis family and our commitment to service in each community. Think of the impact of more than 600,000 Kiwanis family members can make in one day of united service. Every club is invited to take part in this momentous event. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at kfamily@georgiacirclek.org.
