SCUBA Our instructor, Scott Stefano, is a 1993 graduate of Georgia College. While enrolled at Georgia College, Scott enrolled in his first SCUBA course. After his initial certification, he has continued his SCUBA training, earning more than 40 additional certifications in all areas of recreational SCUBA, including PADI Master Scuba Diver Trainer, SDI Open Water Scuba Instructor and technical expertise as a Full Cave Diver with the NSS-CDS and a Technical Cave Diver with IANTD. Scott began teaching in 1994 and has issued almost 1,000 certifications through four certifying agencies. Scott enjoys all facets of diving – but especially enjoys underwater photography (as shown in some of the photos on this page), training new students and making new friends! Scott has been married to his wife Shannon (a certified diver) for 15 years, and they have two beautiful daughters – Blair and Brooke (both of whom are also divers!)
Have you ever dreamed about taking exotic vacations filled with underwater adventures, coral reefs or sunken treasures? Well, now you can make this dream a reality! Take the first step by getting Open Water SCUBA certified. This course provides all scuba gear and materials including a crew pack, which contains the manual, log book, dive tables or computer use guide, and student record folder. (The manual contains homework that must be completed prior to the first class, so please register early to allow ample time to complete the assignments.) Also included are classroom instruction and practice pool dives. Once you successfully complete this indoor training, you can achieve certification by taking an open water diving trip with the instructor. The cost for the certification dive is not part of the course and amounts to an additional $275-$300 paid directly to the instructor, which will include lodging, equipment and passes to the the dive site. Please note that signed waivers of liability are required and must be completed at least one week prior to the course start date before registration is considered complete. You must be 18 years of age or older, be able to complete a 200 yard swim, and tread water for 10 minutes in order to participate in the course. You must register before April 11, as there will be required reading before the first class. Dog Training Through Positive Leadership Among the many important responsibilities dog owners have, training a dog in a positive way is among the most important. Positive training focuses on the entire relationship with your dog based on trust, respect and joy. Research shows dogs descended from wolves and are pack animals so hierarchy is a large part of their world. In order for your dog to know its place and feel secure, you must be the pack leader which will allow your dog to relax and simply learn to please you. A well-trained dog is easier to care for and love, causes less damage to your home (and theirs) and lives a happier life. A calm, under control dog makes for good relationships with people and other pets. Training your dog is a wonderful way to bond with your pet while teaching him how to behave so everybody wins in the long run! Dogs must be six months or older and current on all vaccinations. Register early to get a list of supplies you will need to bring. A signed waiver of liability is required. All owners/handlers of small and large breeds will meet on the first night at 6 p.m. in Room 105 in Chappell Hall. Please do not bring your dog to the first night of class. Please do bring proof of vaccinations.

CPR is an emergency procedure used to revive an adult, child or infant who has stopped breathing and/or whose heart isn’t beating. Such incidences can occur following drowning, heart attacks or strokes, severe allergic reactions and electrocutions, or may be due to Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA). SCA is caused by problems with the heart's electrical system causing irregular heartbeats resulting in the heart stopping. If SCA is the emergency, once CPR has been performed and the heart is beating again, the use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) can restore a normal beat to a heart. These portable AED devices are often found in public places, such as shopping malls, golf courses, businesses, airports, airplanes, casinos, convention centers, hotels, sports venues and schools. This OSHA approved Red Cross course gives you, wherever you are, the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize and care for such injuries and sudden illnesses. Instruction includes Adult, Child and Infant CPR and AED training. Upon successful completion, you will receive a 2-year certification from the American Red Cross. You must be at least 15 years old to take the course. Course #14340201 Monday • Jan. 27 • 5:30-9:30 p.m. 102 Chappell Hall • Fee: $69 • 1 Session Instructor: Ed Smith

There are no educational prerequisites for most courses, and applicants are not required to send high school transcripts or take the college entrance exam to participate. Certificate or professional programs may require certain professional competency for entrance. ENROLLMENT: Enrollment in all classes will be limited to a manageable number; therefore, early registration is desirable. When payments for a course exceed the number who can enroll, applicants will be placed on a waiting list in the order they are received. CANCELED COURSES: The university reserves the right to cancel any program because of insufficient enrollment or for other administrative reasons. Should a situation develop which necessitates cancellation, a full fee refund will be made. CONTINUING EDUCATION UNITS: The University System of Georgia has established the use of the Continuing Education Unit (CEU) as a measuring device for non-credit programs offered by System institutions. The Department of Continuing Education administers the implementation of the CEU. The CEU is defined as follows: ”One Continuing Education Unit is ten contact hours of participation in an organized continuing education experience under responsible sponsorship, capable direction and qualified instruction.” The CEU attests to an individual’s effort to continue learning regardless of age or previous educational accomplishments. Generally, Continuing Education Units are awarded only for programs that are oriented toward occupational skills and knowledge or significant social issues. CEUs are accumulated for each student on a permanent transcript which may be obtained from the Department of Continuing Education. The CEU is not transferable for academic credit. With this growing opportunity, however, has also come increased responsibility, and this increased responsibility has made certification an important issue for many industry employers and some state legislatures. This program will prepare you for entry-level pharmacy technician positions by teaching you medical and pharmaceutical terminology, basic anatomy related to the pharmacology of medications and pharmaceutical calculations. The Pharmacy Technician Program will give you hands-on practice in retail pharmacy procedures through an online lab module. You'll learn what information is necessary to process prescriptions and physician orders and apply that knowledge to fill mock prescriptions. The curriculum also includes the ethics of pharmacy practice and education about prescription medications, patient care and interaction and charges and reimbursement. Upon completion of this program, you’ll be prepared to pass the National Certification Exam offered by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board.

Save a life! Drive defensively! More than 34,600 people lose their lives in motor vehicle crashes annually, and over two million more suffered disabling injuries, according to the National Safety Council. For teenagers, cars are still the leading cause of death. “Death by driving” is the third highest preventable cause of death. The triple threat of high speeds, impaired or careless driving and not using occupant restraints threatens every driver, regardless of how careful or how skilled. Driving defensively means not only taking responsibility for yourself and your actions, but also keeping an eye on "the other guy." GC is proud to be your partner in striving to prevent automobile accidents. In addition, you can save money on your auto insurance (or, parents can save money on your teenager’s insurance!) by successfully completing this National Safety Council Defensive Driving course. Georgia Senate Bill 433 requires insurance companies in Georgia to give families with good driving experience a 10 percent discount on portions of their auto insurance upon completion of this course. Eligibility for the discount will continue for three years, provided that no driver commits a moving traffic offense or has a claim against the policy based on an at-fault accident. Consult with your insurance agent to determine exactly how completion of this program will affect your insurance rates. Please bring paper and pencils to class. This course is not for points reduction.
