At Georgia College, this has involved engaging our students in voter registration efforts, candidate debates, public policy research, and forums with current and former members of Congress. In 2008, Georgia College became one of a handful of schools selected to participate in the Civic Agency Initiative, co-sponsored by the American Association of State Colleges & Universities and the Center for Democracy and Citizenship. Alice Friman and the Writers Series Alice Friman kicked off the literary calendar in August. She is author of eight collections of poetry, most recently The Book of the Rotten Daughter (BkMk Press, 2006) and Zoo (U of Arkansas Press, 1999). She is also winner of the Ezra Pound Poetry Award and the Sheila Margaret Motton Prize from the New England Poetry Club. Her poems have appeared in Poetry, The Georgia Review, Boulevard, The Southern Review, The Gettysburg Review, and Shenandoah. As Poet-in-Residence at Georgia College, students have both the opportunity to learn by taking her poetry class as well as hearing her read in larger settings like the Writers Series. Guests in the series include Scott Russell Sanders, ZZ Packer, and Michael Waters, among others.

On Stage Foreign Films on Friday For several years, foreign films have lit up the screen in the Arts & Sciences Auditorium on Friday evenings. The purpose is not solely entertainment. Each film is introduced by a faculty member, and the evening closes with discussion. The result is exposure to both artistic expression and global perspectives. Here is a list from our fall line up. Kukusha (Finland) Mandabi (Senegal) Xala (Senegal) Persepolis (France) Faat Kine (Senegal) Moolaade (Senegal) The Lives of Others (Germany)

The theatre season started with Eurydice, a magical, funny, and poignant off-Broadway hit The New York Times declared, "devastatingly lovely - and just plain devastating." Adapted by Sarah Ruhl, winner of the MacArthur “genius grant,” and based on the Orpheus myth, two young lovers are separated by the underworld. In November, Yours, Anne, will take the stage. It’s a powerful play with music based on Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl in which the themes of goodness overcoming oppression and discrimination still ring true. Look for The Rover, Baby with the Bathwater, The Lover, and other theatrical presentations in the spring.

Platonos & Collard Greens Georgia College and the historic Douglass Theatre in downtown Macon presented Platanos & Collard Greens in early October. The play tells the story of overcoming cultural and racial prejudices, "a simplistic morality tale rendered in cheerful tones, a look at the refraction of racial prejudice from one minority group to another, and a primer in how best to curtail pernicious stereotype," according to The New York Times. The play was presented free of charge for the community.

The School of Education Receives a National Award

Excuse Me... My Laundry Just Text-Messaged This is the likely response from students who live on campus. At the start of the fall semester Georgia College installed “high-tech” laundry machines that also are environmentally friendly. The new washers and dryers not only save water and energy but alert students via text messaging when the wash and dry cycles end. “Text messaging is the best way to communicate with our students,” says Cindy McClanahan, housing marketing coordinator. “That’s the way they all communicate now — all high tech, all instant information.” The high-efficiency washers use 77 percent less water than traditional top load washers, enough water to fill 7.9 million bottles of water. They are programmed to clean more clothes using less detergent and saving energy, enough to power 5,800 computers year round. This green effort is not an isolated one. Through the Georgia College Green Initiative, students and faculty are working on campus and in the community to clean rivers, conduct waste audits, explore alternate transportation, learn and instruct on ways to conserve energy, and collect recyclable waste from campus offices. Campus police are even getting in on the action with a newly formed bike patrol which is both environmentally friendly and fitting for the community persona of the university.

Bobcat Soccer Hits the Radio This fall soccer took to the airwaves. Fans were able to listen on the campus radio station (88.9 FM) and through the web (www.gcsuradio.com). The broadcast schedule included all home games and many on the road.

Dean of Education Linda Irwin-Devitis and nine faculty members traveled to New York last March to receive the prestigious 2008 Wisniewski Award during the annual AERA (American Educational Research Association) conference. The award is presented each year by the Society of Professors of Education. Named after Richard Wisniewski who worked to elevate teacher education and improve its rigor and responsiveness to a changing school landscape, the award recognizes one institution that has made "singularly significant contributions to the theory and practice of teacher education." “The John H. Lounsbury School of Education is honored to receive this award for our Architects of Change Model of educator preparation,” Irwin-DeVitis says. “The hard work and dedication of so many faculty and teacher candidates at Georgia College shaped the program. We prepare students to address the achievement gap and the changing needs in the classroom. Our graduates are making a difference. A teacher who graduates from Georgia College is twice as likely as the average graduate to remain in teaching after five years, and 91 percent of our graduates are still teaching three to eight years after graduation.”

Welcome Jud Damon Jud Damon joins Georgia College as athletics director, filling the void left by Stan Aldridge, who retired last March. Damon, a Massachusetts native, comes to Georgia College by way of Savannah College of Art and Design, where he served as athletics director for the past eight seasons. His athletic background began in baseball, first as a student-athlete at the University of Pennsylvania, a career that earned him induction to the school’s athletic hall of fame. He spent time as front office personnel in minor league baseball and as a collegiate coach and athletics director at Trinity International University before his tenure in Savannah. "Jud has not only been a sound leader and administrator in college athletics, he's been a program builder," says Bruce Harshbarger, vice president for student affairs. "He led SCAD through a transition from non-scholarship to scholarship athletics, expanded their program offerings, and initiated significant fundraising and community service programs. During his time there, SCAD's athletic teams not only posted winning records in the Florida Sun Conference, they led the conference in academic achievement and AllAcademic honors. The personal values and skills he brings to Georgia College are an excellent match."

Lincoln Turns 200 The Lincoln Presidential Library selected Georgia College to host “Abraham Lincoln: Self Made in America,” an exhibit that highlights Lincoln’s life and times in honor of his 200th birthday. The exhibit will be on display from Dec. 19 through Jan. 16 at the Old Governor’s Mansion. “This is the only exhibit of its type in the nation, and we are thrilled to be selected to host it as part of its tour across America,” says Jim Turner, director of the Old Governor’s Mansion. “It is particularly fitting that Milledgeville was chosen, as the city was Georgia’s capital during the Civil War, the most challenging time of Lincoln’s presidency.”

“Abraham Lincoln: Self Made in America” examines his life chronologically from poor beginnings to ascension as president and tragic assassination. The exhibit also focuses on Lincoln’s self-education and self-improvement using his personal notes and comments to interweave compelling texts with quotes, photographs and maps. In addition, the exhibit incorporates numerous artifacts and reproductions, including a copy of his Gettysburg Address, his famous stove pipe hat, and Mary Lincoln’s music box. The Old Governor’s Mansion will supplement the Lincoln exhibit with artifacts from its own Civil War collection, including letters and other items from Gov. Joseph Brown, who served as Georgia’s chief executive during the war years. For more information visit www.gcsu.edu/mansion.

Painting the Canvas: Liberal Arts and Civic Engagement By Zach Kincaid

“If a nation expects to be ignorant and free … it expects what never was and never will be.” –Thomas Jefferson

tudents at Georgia College are learning the importance of becoming actively involved with public policy issues and electoral politics at all levels. That’s part of the university’s commitment to an ideal of liberal arts education that reaches back to ancient Greece and the birth of democracy—an ideal that connects education with the skills needed for free inquiry and active citizenship. Centuries later, in our own country, Thomas Jefferson made a similar connection when he said, “If a nation expects to be ignorant and free..., it expects what never was and never will be.” “The purpose of a liberal arts education is the development of the person,” says Mike Digby, professor of political science and public administration. “Our role is to help the student become more informed, more analytical, more understanding, and more tolerant.” Digby points to rigorous academics and a supportive college experience as hallmarks of a good education, but he explains that there needs to be more. “If our intent is to develop a person who will be a good, informed, involved, and active citizen, than here needs to be involvement in the broader community in order to cultivate those habits of mind fully.” That’s why a cohort of faculty and students are delving deeper into the work of civic engagement, incorporating dynamic dialogue in the classroom with action in the public square.

One central emphasis is a partnership with the American Democracy Project. As one of 16 universities - and the only one in Georgia - Georgia College is working with the Civic Agency Initiative that began this fall. Its goal is to prepare students to be “agents and architects of thriving communities,” and to be “committed and effective stewards of place.” What better time than a highly charged political season. Gregg Kaufman, coordinator of civic engagement projects at Georgia College, says that the fall season encouraged students to participate in the political process, and, even more, it provided a rich discussion about the core issues and challenges that face both the local and wider community. “Students experienced the community as a learning laboratory,” Kaufman says. “We hosted candidate and citizen forums, worked alongside health and social agencies, and coordinated surveys and research to encourage better involvement in the future.” It’s not anywhere that you find congressional candidates agreeing to a forum that is completely student organized - from the stage to the time allotments, from the moderation to the questions being asked. But Georgia College hosted John Barrow and John Stone of District 12 in late October, , sieving questions from various classes and developing the framework for the event. Students also hosted a Baldwin County forum which provided the experience of local politics at work. “Students truly felt like they became involved in democracy,” adds Kaufman. “It’s this type of learning that is both substantive and practical.” Related to the American Democracy Project, the Times Talks is a weekly

series where faculty and staff host sixtyminute discussions with students about current New York Times articles, panning international and domestic topics. The structure includes both presentation and questions. Students sit in the round and work out a better understanding about the subject at hand, as they think it through with each other. “So, this civic engagement is not something we do because it's neat and interesting --even though it is,” says Digby. “It's necessary for our students to develop into truly educated persons.” Jerry Herbel agrees. He’s a professor of political science and says that, in fact, this is the very thing that students are excited about and why they’ve come to college - to not simply learn but to attribute that learning into something tangible, something that’s a change-agent. “The ‘educated’ have a particular responsibility for stewardship,” Herbel says, “and the tremendous thing is that students come to Georgia College wanting to expound on this. They want to be involved. They come here because they know this is a place where they can learn and experience ways to change the world. They want to change it, and we want to give them the tools to do it.” Georgia College is providing a frame. It’s the students, faculty and staff who are painting inside it with the vibrant colors of new ideas, fresh participation and a renewed excitement to engage their community. ■

What if students became engaged in an organized effort to respond to a social problem?

What if professors harnessed ideas formulated in the classroom and found avenues to engage the surrounding community?

What if a college graduated students who effectively balanced their interests with the promotion of the public good?

Cultivating a Legacy For Education The Life of Miss Myrtice Lynch

By Judy Bailey

mily Myrtice Lynch was a genteel, Southern woman and a born schoolteacher. She spent her life teaching math across Georgia. And after her passing at the age of 97 in April 2007, the Georgia State College for Women alumna and retired schoolteacher paved the way for students to follow her lead with a $735,000 estate gift to Georgia College & State University to fund scholarships. Miss Lynch’s gift was a surprise to both Georgia College and her family. Her nephew discovered her generous gift to the university at the reading of her will. “She very quietly decided to leave a major part of her estate to future students at Georgia College & State University,” said nephew Larry Lynch, a Monticello lawyer who contacted Georgia College about his aunt’s gift. “Our family is very pleased with her decision to support students who want to further their education. She really loved that school.” Lynch described his aunt as “the matriarch of our family.” “She traveled the state to teach math, but her heart remained at home,” Lynch said. “This was her life, her heart was right here and the draw to our family home never left her. She was born here, came home when she retired, and died here.” The “Homeplace” is the Lynch family farm in rural Apollo in Putnam County. The lawns and majestic hardwoods lead visitors to the picturesque, two-story Southern-style home enlarged from a four-room structure by her parents in the early 1900s. Miss Lynch reserved the remainder of her estate for the upkeep of the Homeplace and gifts to Providence Baptist Church, Shady Dale United Methodist Church and Mt. Gilead Baptist Church. On the desk inside the family home is the scrapbook Miss Lynch kept during her stay at

Her parents, Robert Emmett Lynch and his wife, Emma Adra Lynch, farmed in the 1800s and 1900s, at one time supporting about 100 families on the farm. Larry Lynch’s son, Jim Lynch, carries on the family tradition and farms today in Jasper and Putnam Counties, Georgia. The chicken coop, red barn, privy, buggy house, corn crib and smokehouse still stand in pristine condition on the Lynch farm. A two-mule wagon stands ready under an overhang. And to the right of the home stands the log cabin that belonged to Emma Adra Lynch’s parents. She moved north after receiving a bachelor’s degree in 1930 to complete a master’s degree at Columbia University in New York City. Her first teaching job was in rural Lincoln County, Georgia, where she received room and board in lieu of pay. She taught in Atlanta high schools, and during her teaching career, she earned a Ford Foundation Grant that allowed her to study how other teachers taught math in schools around the world. Miss Lynch served as the math coordinator for Atlanta City Schools. honor Honor Roll

Fall Phonathon n September, we kicked off our annual Fall Phonathon for the Heritage Fund. The Heritage Fund provides critical support for student scholarships, student research, library resources and advanced technology. We have an outstanding group of callers including students from throughout the Southeast, as well as international students from Nigeria, Kenya, Jamaica, Romania, and China. There are so many exciting things happening on campus they would love to talk to you about, and they would enjoy hearing your memories and experiences at Georgia College. We hope you will be able to speak with one of our students; they are very eager to speak with you!

I Class of ‘56 celebrates their 50th anniversary.

Peabody Endowed Scholarship he Peabody School goes back to the early days of Georgia College, known then as Georgia Normal and Industrial College when plans for a model school accompanied the college’s founding in 1899. The model school served as a preparatory school where student teachers would gain experience as they practiced their skills. The school became the Peabody School and it added grades in the years that followed. 1918 marked the year of its first senior class. The school was in session until after the 1970s but it transitioned from offering high school classes in 1956 with the completion of Baldwin High School. That year’s senior class celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2006 and with the momentous occasion the class committed to an endowment in honor of the Peabody School and their past teachers. “It’s important for the Peabody legacy to continue,” says Mrs. Faye Johnson, a member of the 1956 class. “Establishing an endowed scholarship would ensure the legacy continues and most importantly would impact future generations of educators.” With that in mind, the endowment will be dedicated to students who are majoring in the field of education with a first preference to relatives of Peabody School attendees. “The plan is to continue raising funds for the scholarship to see it grow and benefit many students in the years ahead,” says Mrs. Johnson. To date over $12,000 has been raised towards the Peabody Endowed Scholarship. A committee of Peabody alumni was created to work alongside the staff of University Advancement. This committee includes Betty Pettigrew Smith (’56), Frances (Deedie) Binion Sibley (’50),Cecile Hattaway Parker (’56), Faye Teague Johnson (’56), Polly Farr Echols (’50). We are pleased to report that a commemorative marker has been established on the site of the Peabody School thanks to the generosity of Rick and Donna Williams at Williams Funeral Home. The marker stands next to what is today Georgia College’s library.

Chasing Passions,

Following Dreams By Judy Bailey

At the tender age of 19, Kathryn Telford realized the importance of giving. hile attending education classes at Georgia College, the coed established an endowment to fund scholarships for deserving students in her home of Franklin County, Ga. With the encouragement of her father, Gordon Telford, Jr., Telford established the Kathryn Telford Scholarship with a $20,000 gift to the university. The first scholarship will be awarded in February 2009 to an incoming Fall 2009 freshman. The senior majoring in middle school education said giving back is the right thing to do. “I want to support this school that offers me an opportunity to excel,” she says. “I could not have asked for a better experience than I have had at Georgia College.” Attending classes on the Hope Scholarship, Telford says her educational costs have been minimal. “My dad had been saving money for years to send me to college, and I had all this money leftover,” she says. “I wanted to give other students a chance to get an education, chase their passions and follow their dreams. Telford is one of a kind, according to Georgia College Director of Development Elizabeth Hines. “This is fantastic,” Hines says. “Kathryn is truly an example and role model for the Georgia College family.” Telford is wise beyond her years. She believes in proactive, positive thinking. While attending classes, she also has given her time and energy to the university and the Milledgeville community as a member of Delta Zeta sorority working with children with auditory problems. She has fine-tuned her leadership skills and spread her positive energy to classmates, sorority sisters and friends. She also turned family tragedies into triumphs for herself and others. When Telford was a kindergartner, she lost her mother in a tragic automobile accident. And her older brother suffered life-altering injuries while Telford was in middle school. “I could have felt sorry for myself, but I chose to think and act positively,” she says. “My middle school teachers really helped me through the hard times. I want to become an example and role model for the students I plan to teach.” Telford admits she lacked focus on her studies in high school and was more interested in her friends than books. She credits the one-onone relationships with her professors and the encouragement of her teaching cohort for a successful experience at Georgia College. “I wouldn’t be the student I am if I had attended a larger university,” she says. “Georgia College is a perfect fit for me. And I’ve learned to balance my life.” Telford will graduate in May 2009 and plans to pursue a master’s degree out of state. But her heart will remain at Georgia College. Her goal is to encourage other students and families to support Georgia College for the next generations of students. “You don’t have to wait to give back, no matter what your capability,” she says. “Not everyone has the ability to give the way I did, but anyone can offer positive thoughts and energy. The more positive thoughts you have, the more positive things will happen.”
