SEASON PREVIEW

The 2010 Georgia soccer season marked the debut of first-year head coach Steve Holeman.

2010 UGA STAT LEADERS

Holeman, who brought 15 years of experience from his days at Ole Miss, became the fourth head coach in program history and introduced the team to a 4-3-3 system and a renewed work ethic.

2010 marked the first season for assistant coach Dan Blank, who accompanied Holeman in the move after spending the previous three seasons on the staff in Oxford. It also marked the first season for Georgia’s highly touted 14-member freshman class, chock full of All-Americans, national team members, and state champions ready to make a difference.

The new-look Bulldogs finished the season with an overall record of 11-6-4 (5-3-3 SEC), advancing to a familiar place: the semifinals of the SEC Championships for the third time in four years. A couple of ties in the middle of the season proved costly as Georgia was narrowly left out of the NCAA Tournament field, but as the 2011 season waits just around the corner, the scene is no longer a new one for Holeman and the young nucleus. “While we do lose some key seniors we have a great group of young players coming back,” Holeman said at the conclusion of the 2010 season. “I think we relied heavily on our freshmen in the scoring output with our three leading scorers [Alexa Newfield, Meghan Gibbons, Nicole Locandro] all being freshmen.”

“They’re only going to be better in 2011. We may have been a little inconsistent because of how young we were, but it will be huge for this group to come back with experience. We’ll definitely be a more veteran team.” Among the highlights of the 2010 campaign for the Bulldogs was the play of first-year starting goalkeeper, redshirt sophomore Ashley Baker. Baker led the SEC in numerous statistical categories throughout the season, but perhaps her most impressive figure was her string of four straight shutouts and a total of over 561 minutes of scoreless soccer, good for the longest such streak in SEC play in school history. Baker earned SEC Defensive Player of the Week honors Oct. 11.

the Week in back-to-back announcements during the first two weeks of the season. The 2011 Georgia team will return 25 players, including eight regular starters and nine who made at least 10 starts.

It returns a keeper who stopped over eight of every 10 shots sent her way. It returns 89 percent of its scoring. Most importantly, it brings back the nucleus of a year ago – except that they are a year older, a year wiser. And refusing to be left on the outside looking in.

Steve Holeman Head Coach Second Season (18th Overall) • Wake Forest ‘90 Career Record: 176-130-35 (.567)

COACHES & STAFF

Steve Holeman made his debut as the head coach of Georgia soccer for the 2010 season. Holeman came to Athens after spending the previous 15 seasons as the head coach at Ole Miss. The dean of SEC soccer coaches, Holeman is the fourth head coach at Georgia since the program’s inception in 1995. The 2010 season saw Georgia compile a record of 11-6-4 (5-3-3 SEC) while reaching the SEC Championships semifinals for the third time in four seasons. Dating back to his time at Ole Miss, Holeman has now reached the SEC Tournament for 14 straight seasons. Four Bulldogs received All-SEC honors under Holeman’s direction while the team garnered its eighth consecutive NSCAA Team Academic Award for maintaining a cumulative 3.0 GPA. He now owns a career record of 176-130-35 (.567). Holeman started the women’s soccer program at Auburn in 1993, then moved to Oxford, Miss., where he began the soccer program for the Rebels in 1995. In addition to the four NCAA Tournament appearances under Holeman’s direction, Ole Miss won three SEC Western Division titles and made an appearance in the SEC Tournament Finals in 1999. The four NCAA Tournament appearances (2002, 2003, 2005, 2009) include a trip to the second round in 2003 when the Rebels defeated the Texas Longhorns. In 2005, Holeman led the Rebels to a 14-5-2 record including an 8-1-2 mark in league play. He was honored by Soccer Buzz as the 2005 Central Region Coach of the Year runner-up. Holeman ranks third all-time among league coaches with 176 victories, while his 17 years in the conference makes him the longest-tenured active SEC women’s soccer coach. He produced 29 All-SEC selections for the Rebels, and had at least one allleague player every year since 1996. Under Holeman, Ole Miss players were among the nation’s elite in the classroom with eight Academic/Scholar All-America honorees and 33 Academic AllRegion selections. Over his last five seasons in Oxford, the Rebels went 19-1-5 against SEC West foes. At Auburn, Holeman put together the Tigers’ first-ever women’s soccer program in only six weeks and led the team to winning record at 7-6-3 in its inaugural campaign. Holeman has served on the staff at the Region III Olympic Development Program (ODP). He was head coach of the South Region team at the U.S. Soccer Festival in 2001-02, and guided them to a gold medal finish at the 2001 event in Chicago. Holeman, who holds a United States Soccer Federation (USSF) “A” coaching license, began his coaching career while still a student-athlete at Wake Forest University. In 1991, Holeman guided the Huntsville (Ala.) under-17 boys select team to the Alabama state championship. From 1992-94, he served as coach

6

of the Auburn men’s club team. At the same time he was beginning his coaching career, Holeman also played soccer at Wake Forest. A four-year letterman at midfield, he helped lead the Demon Deacons to the NCAA Tournament in 1988, 1989 and 1990. In 1989, he was a member of the Wake Forest team that clinched the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament second round. During that 1989 season, Wake Forest was ranked as high as No. 3 in the nation. Holeman played professional soccer as a member of the Montgomery Capitals, a semi-pro team based in Montgomery, Ala., in 1993 and 1994. He also played on the Alabama Men’s All-Star Indoor Team in 1992. His knowledge and respect throughout college soccer recently earned him the position of chairman for the NCAA men’s and women’s soccer rules committee, a position he held in 2004-05. A native of West Long Branch, N.J., Holeman graduated from Wake Forest University in 1990 with a bachelor’s degree in health and sports science. In 1993, he received his master’s degree in exercise physiology from Auburn, maintaining a 4.0 GPA throughout his graduate studies. Holeman has also successfully completed coursework toward a doctorate degree in exercise physiology. Holeman was named the Georgia head coach on April 16, 2010. Born Dec. 21, 1967, Holeman is married to the former Julie Newton of Goodman, Miss., and they have a daughter, six-year old Anna Mae, and a son, two-year old Robert (Bo) Stephen.

COACHES & STAFF

Dan Blank’s first season with Georgia soccer was 2010 after he spent the previous three seasons at Ole Miss under Steve Holeman. Blank was a volunteer coach for the Rebels in 2007 and 2008 before he was promoted to a full-time assistant in 2009. In his first year in charge of the Ole Miss defense, Blank helped lead the Rebels to the best goalsagainst average in the SEC. On that note, Blank became the first coach in SEC history to lead his defense to the best goals-against average in consecutive years at different universities in 2010. In 2009 with the Rebels, Blank’s defense put up a conference-best 0.68 GAA in SEC games. A year later at UGA, Blank led the Bulldogs to a GAA of 0.60 in league games to top the SEC. Guiding the Georgia defenders, Blank helped the Bulldog backs post a 0.85 goals against average overall, allowing just 19 goals all season and coming away with nine shutouts on the year. Defenders Rebekah Perry and Torri Allen were named second-team All-SEC and SEC All-Freshman, respectively, under Blank’s leadership in 2010. Blank boasts a wealth of coaching experience and success at many levels of soccer. Prior to joining the Rebel staff in 2007, he spent nine years as the head women’s coach at Embry-Riddle University after building the program from scratch in 1998. A three-time Florida Sun Conference Coach of the Year and NAIA Region 14 Coach of the Year, Blank compiled a 98-61-8 record and guided the Eagles to three conference titles, three NAIA Region XIV titles and three NAIA national tournament appearances. Before his time at Embry-Riddle, Blank spent three seasons as head coach of the nationally ranked Brewton-Parker College women’s program where he amassed a 47-13-3 record. He led the Barons to two NAIA tournament berths and three league titles, earning Georgia Athletic Conference Coach of the Year plaudits each season. The Barons were ranked as high as fourth nationally all three years. Prior to his tenure at Brewton-Parker, Blank served for three years as assistant coach for Wheeling Jesuit College, helping that program to three national tournament berths and three regional and district titles. Blank has also had success on the semi-pro level, having

Robin Confer Assistant Coach/Recruiting Coordinator Seventh Season • University of North Carolina ‘98

COACHES & STAFF

Robin Confer completed her sixth season as Georgia’s assistant coach and recruiting coordinator after serving as the Bulldogs’ interim head coach in the spring of 2010. As the recruiting coordinator, Confer has played an integral role in bringing the three highest-ranked signing classes in UGA history to Athens. The 2006 class was ranked No. 8, the 2007 group was rated No. 14 and the 2008 class earned a No. 15 ranking. The Georgia program has been successful in keeping the best in-state talent at UGA, as six of the 14 members of the 2010 freshman class hail from the Peach State while 21 players since 2006 have come from Georgia. Confer’s work with the Georgia attack helped the Bulldogs outscore the opposition by a tally of 37-19 in 2010, while rookie Alexa Newfield earned first-team All-SEC honors and was ranked in the top-5 in several SEC offensive categories. As a former forward for the U.S. National Team, Confer pays special attention to Georgia’s attacking players. In 2007 she helped coach sophomore Carrie Patterson to NSCAA Second-Team All-American accolades, as she became just the second Bulldog ever to earn that award. In 2006, Patterson earned SoccerBuzz Freshman All-America, SEC Freshman of the Year, First-Team All-SEC and Second-team All-Southeast Region honors, and left Georgia as the school’s all-time leader in goals, assists, points, and multi-goal games under Confer’s direction. Patterson was ultimately drafted 40th overall in the 2010 Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS) draft. Confer also assisted with the transition of senior Ali Williams from defender to forward in 2005, a move which sent Williams on to earn SEC Offensive Player of the Year recognition. Confer joined the staff at Florida State after a stellar career in the ACC and successful coaching stints in the Atlantic Coast Conference, Big 12 and Southeastern Conference. The former 1997 National Player of the Year and three-time national champion at North Carolina is embarking on her 10th year in the collegiate coaching ranks. Under Confer’s watch in Tallahassee, the Seminoles posted a 29-13-4 overall record, a 9-5-2 mark in the ACC and advanced to the program’s first College Cup in 2003. But Confer is no stranger to life in the SEC, as she was an assistant coach at Mississippi State for one season under head coach Neil McGuire before joining the Seminole staff. Before her stint in Starkville, Miss., Confer served as a second assistant at one of the top women’s soccer programs in the nation at Texas A&M. While working with Aggie head coach G. Guerrieri, Confer and Texas A&M advanced to the Sweet 16 in back-toback NCAA Tournaments. In addition to her UGA coaching responsibilities, Confer is a

8

2011 Georgia soccer

Southeast Region III ODP staff coach and is also involved with ODP in the state of Georgia. Confer’s first coaching experience came at her alma mater as she served as a volunteer assistant under coaching legend Anson Dorrance at North Carolina. A four-year starter at North Carolina from 1994-1997, Confer helped the Tar Heels to three national championships (1994, 1996-1997). During her senior season, Confer was named the National Player of the Year by both the Soccer News and SoccerBuzz. In North Carolina’s run to the 1997 National Championship, Confer was named the Most Valuable Offensive Player of the NCAA Final Four, as well as being named a first-team All-American. She was also a finalist for the Hermann Award, which recognizes the nation’s top collegiate soccer athlete, and a semifinalist for the Missouri Athletic Club Sports Foundation Player of the Year award in 1998. Confer currently ranks fourth on UNC’s career point-scoring list behind such great names as Mia Hamm and April Heinrichs. She is the fifth-leading goal scorer in Tar Heel history with 77 tallies, and her 55 career assists are the sixth most in North Carolina soccer history. Confer never missed a game in her Carolina career and holds the NCAA record with most games played at 107. She is one of just 11 former North Carolina players to have had their jersey retired. She was also named to The Atlantic Coast Conference 50th Anniversary Women’s Soccer team which recognized the top 50 players in the conference since 1987. COACHES & STAFF

Jonathan Harvey joined the Georgia soccer staff in February 2011 as a volunteer coach. He will work primarily with the goalkeepers. Harvey returns home to Athens after five successful seasons as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at NCAA Division II North Georgia College and State University in Dahlonega, Ga. Harvey helped the Lady Saints to a 48-34-8 record in his five seasons, a stint that culminated in 2010 with the program’s first ever NSCAA Top-25 ranking and finish as the Peachbelt Conference Tournament runnerup. As the assistant at North Georgia, Harvey was instrumental in lowering the Saints’ goals-against average from 1.79 in 2005 to 1.03 in 2010, a program-best. While at NGCSU, Harvey recruited and trained 13 PBC All-Conference performers, five NSCAA All-Southeast Region selections, and one NSCAA All-American and PBC Freshman of the Year. Harvey worked closely with head coach Chris Adams on day-today operations, practice planning, fundraising, travel, and recruiting. Harvey is no stranger to youth soccer in Georgia having served as

ACADEMICS As the Georgia Soccer players exit their locker room, the first thing they see across the hall is a display promoting Georgia’s commitment to Academic Excellence. The Bulldogs have been awarded the NSCAA Team Academic Award eight straight years and in nine of the last 10. The award is given annually to collegiate teams that maintain a team GPA over a 3.0 The display also recognizes the individual player who finishes the year with the highest GPA, an award established in 2005. In 2010, that accolade went to senior Marah Falle.
